Re: [slim] Slimserver is woeful on Windows

2007-03-03 Thread Paul_B

The other issue on speed is how MySQL is configured on Linux and
Windows. I guess at that point you may want to look at a single album
and see if it really is the NAS or some other component.

A direct file copy under the two OS may also give an indicative result
of OS perfromance.

I have a vague idea why you installed them - I kind of remember what MH is
standing for ;-).

Ah! I wondered what MH stood for!

I'd be interested to know whether MHCPAN is causing the problems. Could
you please just put it back into the plugins folder and see, what happens?
If it crashes again, I'll have to think about another solution. Thanks!

Do I need to restore one of the plugins that will use MHCPAN, or will it simply

Re: [slim] Vista 64 Bit ACC encoded files

2007-03-03 Thread beesoft

Hi,
I have the same problem on Vista 32-bit Ultimate as well. I have MP3
encoded files but a lot AAC (unprotected, of course) as well.
Everything is working fine on WinXP SP2 with SlimServer 6.5.x.

I could manage to get SlimServer 6.5.1 running on my Windows Vista
system by adding the ports 3483/tcp/udp and 9000/tcp to the Windows
Firewall exceptions. MP3 files are just working fine but not the AAC
files.

It looks like the programs e. g. mov123.exe (located at C:\Program
Files\SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread) doing the
transcoding do not work on Windows Vista.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Pat,

The issue is resistance of the wire run, not current-carrying capacity.
Roger Russell states that the resistance of the wire run should be no
more than 5% of the nominal speaker impedance to have no audible
effect. For an 8-ohm speaker, a 50' run of 16-gauge wire is
acceptable. For a 2-ohm speaker, a 12' run of 16-gauge wire is the
limit.

See Russell's article (http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm) for
a table of maximum wire lengths vs. wire gauge and speaker impedance.

Re: [slim] Gapless playback not working?

2007-03-03 Thread teppic

I'm not getting reliable gapless playback with MP3s. I've tried the
latest 6.5.2 daily builds and the stable 6.5.1. Sometimes there's no
gap at all, sometimes a tiny click, sometimes a small gap.

The MP3s are encoded with lame 3.97 (-V2 --vbr-new) from Flac files
directly ripped from CD. The Flac files play gaplessly perfectly, as do
transcoded Ogg Vorbis files. Also these same MP3s play gaplessly without
any problems in iTunes 7.

The latest official release of SaverSwitcher definitely has some known
bugs -- mainly for cases where someone has chosen SaverSwitcher as a
screensaver but hasn't made the appropriate 1/9 saver active. The
bugs related to that tend to be CPU-hogging bugs, though, not crashing
bugs (to the best of my knowledge). I think I've fixed those bugs, but
haven't done enough testing to feel comfortable with a new release.
Anyway, as I said, I'm not aware of any fatal/crashing bugs since

If you find anything wrong that looks like SaverSwitcher, please let me
know and I'll do my best to fix the problem ASAP.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox vs Sonos

2007-03-03 Thread utowana

I've owned a SB for over a year and, after my wife and daughter, it
would be the next thing I grab in a house fire. Having said that, my
bro in law recently asked for my help setting up a complete home audio
system. He has a designer home and wanted clean, sexy and easy to use.
After a lot of soul searching, I helped him purchase and install a
frightfully expensive SONOS system that included multiple controllers
and base units. It was effortless to set up and sounds fine. He
loves it. It gave me a lot of time to play with the system directly.
I found the controller to be cute, but surprisingly choppy in its
response. One of the controllers needed to be reset several times a
day...and I recommended he send it back. I hated the software
installed on his host computer. Despite the occasional oddities of
SS, I'll take it any day over what Sonos is passing off. After playing
with the Sonos for a day, my brother in law asked how to create a custom
play list. Well, just try doing some creative searching on the Sonos
software. It can barely be done from the controller. I was forced to
install Media Center on his computer, taught him how to really search
his database of music, create an interesting playlist, export it, and
save it in a folder that the Sonos would search (oh yeah, and then have
Sonos rescan the library). I could go on, but my sense was that the
Sonos was for music listeners and the SS/SB is for music lovers.
Sometimes a prix fix meal is fun, but generally I like to order a la
carte.

[slim] i-Tunes - irritated old geezer needs advice

2007-03-03 Thread frumjohnno

I've had an iPod, and of consequently i-Tunes for a few years. For a
long time they just worked, lacking nothing that I needed. Now there
have been many improvements... but the application is so buggy that
it's almost unuseable.
I'm currently running 7.02.16 on an XP Pro, SP2 box (all patches up to
date except WGA) with heaps of disc space and 2Gb RAM. AMD 3500
processor, Gigabyte GAK8NF m/b nVidia chipset.
I have ripped CDs and MP3s from various sources.
Problems are:
1) Skipping within tracks. I recall setting a QT switch which was
supposed to solve the worst of the problem, which it did at the time
(the app was also jumping wildly when scrolling the window!) but now
I'm getting a lesser version of the same problem - tracks just skip
the occasional second. The tracks that exhibit the problem play fine in
Windows Media Player.
2) When double clicking on a track to start it, tracks frequently
refuse to play, despite being selected and displaying in the track
status window. Only restarting the app will restore their function.

Absolute crap. As someone who bought his first Mac (two of them!) in
1986, at enormous cost, I have now reached the point where I HATE
anything connected with this company and it's grossly overpriced
products. Not keen on MS for that matter, but...

Anyone know a quick fix for the above problems? I have no ambitious use
for this stuff, just playing few bits of music to provide background
noise for my weary old age... Assuming I last longer than the iPod I
certainly won't be replacing it with another CrApple device.

All help gratefully received!

Yes, for the potentially critical code to be called you'll have to have

Well, I uninstalled 5.8.8.819, and noticed that it left some html folder

No perl.exe crash when I use web UI. I have also used Album Review from web UI.

So, must have been the junk that got left behind from 5.8.8.819.

[slim] Can't get 6.5.1 to fly

2007-03-03 Thread MadScientist

This is first time I’ve had a problem with a Slimserver update, but I
just can’t get version 6.5.1 to run. I’m running Slimserver on a
dedicated PC running XP Pro (with no anti-virus software running).

About a week ago, I tried to install 6.5.1 over 6.5.0 and I got an
error message (unfortunately details of this have got lost). I then
tried a clean install of 6.5.1 but the software wouldn’t run. The
Slimserver icon appeared in the tray but I can’t get it to boot up from
the shortcut (and I left it for 15min+). My Squeezebox was also non-
functional. At this point I gave up and reverted back to 6.5.0 with
no problems after a clean install.

Today, I had a go with 6.5 v2007-03-02 and initially tried an install
over 6.5.0. I got the following error message:

Error: can’t locate perl58.dll
Make sure the active bin directory is in your PATH

(This was different to the error message obtained with 6.5.1)

The software was functional initially but then failed to start after a
computer reboot.

I then tried a clean install of 6.5 v2007-03-02 which failed to start
and behaved the same as the 6.5.1 clean install.

I’m not back with 6.5.0 – at least it works.

Any suggestions as to how I can a version of 6.5.1 to fly?

MS

Re: [slim] Squeezebox vs Sonos

2007-03-03 Thread tamanaco

I also considered the Sonos before buying my SB3. It has been said many
times before that people choose the Sonos based on the its sexiness and
on the two way functionality of its remote. Folks also buy it because of
its ease-of-installation reputation. These are similar to the reason
why people buy iPods. The iPod and the Sonos are close systems whose
components are made by the same company. Because of this, there aren't
many issues of integration and therefore they are easier to install.
BUT, with a close systems there is very little flexibility. If Sonos
does not enhance the system it is very difficult for anyone else to do
so. You won't catch me dead holding an iPod or a Sonos remote. I
rather have the freedom of open components like the SB3. This is the
reason that I have owned portable DAPs like the Nex II (Flash based)
and a Rio Karma (hard drive-based) and more recently a Cowon D2 4GB. I
bought these portable DAPs and the SB3 because they don't tie me to
their software platform, because they provide support for many media
file formats and because they don't tie me to a single online services
provider like the iPod. Btw, I know that there is pain associated with
open systems, but thoroughly reading the components manuals and
having friends or family members with a little tech savvy... helps.

About the two way remote... Now that Logitech owns Slim Devices, maybe
the Harmony division would consider making a Universal IR/RF remote
with two way WiFi capabilities. This would be a better remote than the
Sonos as it would take only one remote to control your whole A/V
system. I've been dreaming of this remote for quite some time. It
should be an open remote and support other popular media servers not
just the Slimserver. The battery and docking stations are issues that
can be addressed. There better batteries technologies in the market and
there many ways to save power like putting the remote to sleep and
waking it up with a motion sensor like the Harmony 880. A high
resolution color LCD and a navigation wheel would be icing on the cake.
Of course, I'm assuming that this would be an optional (expensive)
remote made so that Logitech can sell it in other market segments not
just in the SB-Slimserver market.

Those are all fine suggestions about running netstat before and after,
MySQL configuration, and timing direct file copies. But someone else is
going to have to answer them. Sorry, but as I usually run slimserver on
my NAS (and occasionally under Ubuntu), the Linux/Windows scanning
questions just don't have enough personal interest for me to spend more
time re-booting, timing, etc. Especially because doing the Windows bit
means sitting at the server itself, which is in a cramped space in the
basement.

Now, if someone wanted to give me 10k - 40k new tracks (legally and
compatible with my musical tastes, of course) I'd be happy to test
whether the difference in scanning times is linear ;o)

I tried setting Slim Server to NOT automatically start with Windows,

The browser window that usually opens returns an odd message -

The blank above is intentional - no program name is displayed. I'm

appreciated.

Try rebooting by holding the remote's Power button until you see the
Slim Devices boot logo. There's a bug in 6.5.1 the firmware for SB2/SB3
units that, if triggered, leaves the SB unable to play any music until
rebooted like that. Normally it seems that certain Internet Radio
stations and possibly SqueezeNetwork usage *trigger* the bug. Once
triggered, not even local music will play til the SB reboots, though,
as you describe, everything else about the SB seems to work.
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4727

If that's the case for you you can identify what you did prior to the
trouble, consider adding your info to the bug ticket.

Good luck,

Peter

I'm going to say MAYBE to the streaming of abacast streams.

I use to have the same issue with an internet radio station until I was
able determine what the real url was that is getting streamed.

Once I figured out the real url, I was able to paste the url in the
tune in/ tune to box and everything was fine.

To determine what url was actually getting streamed I used a program

is the one I used.

Maybe you can paste a couple of your urls here and someone will tell
you want you can use.

[slim] streaming live FLAC (not FLAC files)?

2007-03-03 Thread peterw

Has anyone managed to stream FLAC to their players from a live source
like a sound card audio input? I've currently got DarkIce and Icecast
set up to stream what's on my stereo to my Squeezeboxes as 320k CBR
MP3, but I'd rather use FLAC.

Ripping to FLAC files and then playing those files is *not* what I want
to do. I want to stream FLAC without writing any FLAC to the music
folder.

Do Slimserver and the Squeezebox support FLAC streams (Ogg FLAC)?

How could/should I set this up?

Thanks,

Peter

One of the folders I deleted completely from the hard drive in on my

There is no music there, so nothing plays, but it shows up when I
browse. Also I'm having a terrible time getting cover art to show up
now. This all seems to have to do with moved files. Could somebody
please tell me how to remove all traces of slimserver and it's database
and just start over. I thought that I had done that, but I can't see
where this stuff is coming from in the file system. Why can't
slimserver just search the path I specify and leave everything else
 alone?

Uninstall SlimServer.

Delete C:\Program Files\slimserver.

**Delete all playlists in your music folder.** This is probably where
the old entries were coming from. If you want to keep your playlists,
you must edit them to point to the new locations of all files. You can
open most playlists in a text editor then do a global Find - Replace.

Reinstall SlimServer.

Re: [slim] Getting better performance out of MySQL

2007-03-03 Thread Tarn

I just made the same changes to my.tt (in Windows under Program
Files\SlimServer\Server\MySQL):

key_buffer_size = 32M
table_cache = 256
sort_buffer_size = 4M
read_buffer_size = 1M

Added variables:
innodb_buffer_pool_size = 64M

I don't know how to run the MySQL admin tool so I don't know if the
innodb_buffer_pool_size worked or not. However I did put spaces around
the = having run into other parsers that would barf on an equal sign
without spaces.

Results: Browsing by Genre, Artist, etc. is AT LEAST three times as
fast. A number of actions (pulling up the 100 albums in folk genre)
are at least 10x faster.

This is for a small (230 album, soon to be 400) flac collection
(properly tagged) which really should have been easy for SlimServer to
handle.

I had thought the speed issues I was seeing were related to using the
browser control of Slim Server, but it looks like most of the problems
were with MySQL and/or with how SlimServer is using MySQL.

Looks like at a minimum new versions of SlimServer should write out a
different my.tt then they currently are, and the current SQL queries,
joins, etc. should be examined for how expensive they are.

I assume somebody has entered a bug on this?

[slim] Extreme enoded MP3's with LAMEB not playing

2007-03-03 Thread shelbt

Thanks for taking time to read as I'm at end of rope.

I have recently purchased SqueezeBox 3 and love everything about it
except that it will not play my MP3's. I have pinned the problem down
to either the ripping (less likely) and the encoding (more likely).

All my MP3's that were ripped using LAMEB with the -preset extreme do
not work on the SB. The music is discovered and loaded into library it
reports it is playing on both the web interface and the device but it
reports no progress thru the track and there of course is no sound
output. I have to power cycle the SB 3 and restart the service before
I can play another MP3 (of course one encoded differently).

Does anyone have ideas other than go spend a month re-ripping and
encoding my library?

Huge thanks for an help.

Re: [slim] i-Tunes - irritated old geezer needs advice

2007-03-03 Thread Steven Moore

I'm sure you have tried a reinstall but if not try that.
It could be a preferences problem, look here.
It could also be a quicktime problem reinstall that.
It could also be something else in windows that's causing the trouble.
I know plenty of people using itunes on macs and in windows without
problems.

Windows is a very complicated system and therefore it's difficult to
diagnose problems often the application that seems to be causing it
isn't. Sometimes another installation 'interferes' with the correct
working of another application.
I have lost count of the number of clean installs of windows I have
helped people with because things started to go wrong.

A happy Mac user.

[slim] Help: Slimserver Error Message

2007-03-03 Thread cvj

After installing a new power supply, I have a strange bug when I start
Slimserver after a re-boot. I get the following error message Starting
Slimserver failed. Please see the event viewer or contact support.

There are no entries in the event viewer related to this.

The only way to start Slimserver 6.5.1 is to re-install it and then it
works - even when the PC goes in and out of Hibernation... but if I
reboot, back to the above behavior.

Before the Power supply install, no problems with Slimserver. All other
apps work as before - this is limited to Slimserver.

I am using Windows XP Pro (SP2 with all updates).

The PC is a Pentium 4 3.0 gHz with 1 gig of memory and tons of free
disk space.

Any suggestions/ideas... this is really stange that upgrading from a
narginal 300 Watt to a 485 Watt Power Supply could be involved in
this...but who knows?

Re: [slim] Slimserver Problems running on Windows Vista

2007-03-03 Thread Imboden

I built a new machine this week and installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit.
Slimserver is only other software loaded. Loaded okay at first, then
restarted loaded only a blank page. Then wiped the hard drive and
tried again after reading forums to troubleshoot. Then slimserver
wouldn't run - mysql wasnt running. My current workaround has worked
all afternoon:
1) closed slimserver and slimtray (mysql wasnt running).
2) ran services.msc
3) started SlimServerMySQL. Opened Properties:
under the recovery tab, changed each to restart service
4)closed services
5)started slimtray (shortcut on desktop).

Its currently working, but I'm not restarting because I'm barbecuing
and need tunes and no hassles today...

I'm very frustrated at this point - Slim Server *must* have some
corrupted footprint somewhere on the computer that uninstalling doesn't
remove, and a search for files named Slim doesn't uncover.
Maddening!

Re: [slim] SlimDevices Squeezebox 2/3 and Sonos ZP80

2007-03-03 Thread notanatheist

Interesting that you state the Sonos is better at multi-room sync. In
what way is it better than the SB2/3? I have 3 SB units at home and
regularly sync/unsync them. The only thing I can think of that could be
considered a 'hiccup' is the current track restarts. Not enough to
bother me though.

Does the Sonos give you web control as well? Is the remote RF or WiFi?
I find it convienant to be sitting at a computer and just pop up the
web interface to make changes to the volume and playlist on the fly
without searching for the remote.

I certainly agree on the display issue though. It is nice to see what
is actually playing on the screen and/or have other information at your
fingertips like the date/time/weather, visualizations, track info, or
custom text welcoming people. Not exactly something the Sonos can do.
Squeezebox obviously gives you far more freedom to setup your device
however you please and is not tied to any particular platform.

[slim] Can't Find Artists in Slim Server or Squeezebox

2007-03-03 Thread buckleup

I'm using Itunes to organize my music library on a PC running XP Media
Center Edition. I'm using a Squeezebox 3 (SB3) to play my the music in
my library on my stereo.

I recently tried to play a song but couldn't find the artist when I
searched for it using the SB3 remote. I then checked Slim Server (SS)
to see if I could find the artist that way. The song I was searching
for was Smile by Lily Allen. So in SS, I searched for Artists starting
with the letter L. I did not see Lily Allen. I then tried the Advanced
Search and entered 'Lily Allen' in the 'Artist' field. The search
returned 1 result:

Smile from Unknown Album by Lily Allen

After finding the song this way, I was able to play the song thru the
SB3.

When I clicked on 'Lily Allen', I saw the following:

Home/Artist/Lily Allen

0 albums with 0 songs by 0 artists

I have discovered that there are many other songs that I cannot find
unless I use the Advanced Search method described above.

I just want to be able to play my songs while sitting comfortably in my
living room without having to run up to my computer running SS to do the
Advanced Search stuff.

Does anyone have any suggestions of things to check to fix this
problem?

Re: [slim] Delete music library?

Well...I told it to clear and rescan. It hasn't worked since. SlimServer
won't stay running. My SB won't connect. Any ideas...?

I may be an atheist, but I've had regular situations where the synced
SB3's weren't very well synced. I'm using wireless, so perhaps that's
the problem. Or you could be right and it's just god trying to get back
at me for not believing in him/her.
