Re: [slim] Digital recording

2007-03-29 Thread ceejay

- A cable that had digital at one end and analog would be a DAC, and no
cable is going to do that for you!

- Recording level is indeed irrelevant to a digital signal, but
that's not what you have here. If you are taking the line out from the
SB then you're in analog mode.

- I'm not quite sure what this Pogo device is, but if its the one I
found after a quick google then it has only an analog line in, no
apparent way to transfer mp3 files.

- I'm not sure how perfect recording level in your first post is
consistent with have to turn the volume up a bit more than usual in
your second, but if you're happy with what you've got then leave it
alone!

- if there's no recording level control on the device, its because its
cheap, not because it doesn't need one

- why anyone would make a digital music player that doesn't have the
capability of downloading mp3 files completely escapes me!

- BTW, is it one of these?
http://www.engadget.com/2005/03/09/pogos-radio-your-way-lx-radio-centric-dap/
If so it seems to have an SD card facility, if you have an SD card
reader on your PC you could use that for transferring mp3s.

Re: [slim] Apple TV Competition?

2007-03-29 Thread hmurchison

The Apple TV is very formidable competition. It plays HD video,
supports lossless audio and plays your photographs.

It has a an Intel proc, Nvidia GPU and a 40GB hard drive that is a snap
to replace with whatever 2.5 drive you want (PATA). It runs OS X 10.4
with a full Quicktime stack which has been modified with Perian to
support more codecs.

It has Toslink, Component outputs and HDMI and a mysterious USB port
for service needs.

If I'm a consumer and I'm looking at an Apple TV versus a Slimbox it's
going to boil down to if I want Photo and video support and if I
hate/love having the TV show the UI.

Complaints about Apple being the Devil or using DRM to gain a monopoly
is just dogma pure and simple. Apple is where they are because of
excellent design and execution.

I hope that with Logitech's backing Slim Devices can thrive and compete
at this level.

Re: [slim] Apple TV Competition?

2007-03-29 Thread Steven Moore

I think having the TV on is not a problem for most users. In fact it
will be a talking point amongst friends and relatives which will give
buyers that confident feeling that they have got value for money.
I think it was stated before that this is a consumer machine and not
aimed at the audiophile market. When viewed from this perspective the
Apple tv is a strong competitor to the squeezebox.
Remember you don't need to buy a single track from Apple it will play
all your ripped music so really the only lock in is that you need to
use itunes, which in my opinion an excellent piece of software and is
free.
The big advantage of the Apple tv is that it will not need much
maintenance if any.
Squeezebox on the other hand does take a degree of technical knowledge
and a certain amount of maintenance, and if things go wrong...
Which would you recommend to your very non technical relative?

The only stumbling block is the need for an hd tv, but have you been
into an electrical shop recently? That's pretty much all you can buy.

Apple TV is fine if you live in the Apple ecosystem but I think
Slimserver still has the edge in terms of supported sources and formats
esp. if you include Plugins such as WMA, FLAC, OGG, RealAudio, XM,
Sirius, AAC+, Pandora.

From the Apple TV spec sheet.

 Audio formats supported
AAC (16 to 320 Kbps); protected AAC (from iTunes Store); MP3 (16 to 320
Kbps); MP3 VBR; Apple Lossless; AIFF; WAV

Apple show up where SD fail - the consumer product versus the enthusiast
product.

To compete, SD need to do two things:

- make it work out of the box. This means supplying it with a
fully-configured NAS as a complete option, plus bundled ripping
software that all just works.

- make the web user interface a joy to use. The remote is fine, but
the web interface is not suitable as the end-user consumer interface.
If third parties can do it (Nokia 770), why can't SD?

I reckon the Logitech acquisition will improve both of these, but we'll
see.

This is my point - as much as I like my squeezebox, I'd be reluctant to
recommend to anyone even remotely non-technical. iTunes is easy, Apple
TV looks easy.

In addition, it's pretty good value for money.

While I've had fun with my squeezebox, it has been a huge time-suck and
required too much fiddling/compromises (the non-ASCII song/filenames
issue has caused huge problems for me). In many cases here, I notice
plenty of people have dedicated servers, and some have bought some
specifically for that. Lots of people I know would not do this - they
have one laptop, and aren't going to dedicate it to running an audio
client full-time.

I also don't understand the comments about the apple ecosystem. The
only Apple ecosystem requirement is to use iTunes. Granted, that
means users have to be using windows or mac os x, but that does cover
just about the entire market. (Would mt-daapd or whatever it's called
work?)

Anyone using better fileformats (like FLAC) is probably sophisticated
enough to set up a converter to populate iTunes with AAC, MP3 or apple
lossless files.

This will make the slimserver a much, much harder sell. Or relegate SD
to a hard-core niche market. On the other hand, maybe that's where they
want to go with the $2000 transporter.

Agree with all of this. My NAS and Squeezebox probably sat idle for a
good two weeks before I figured out what to do with it (I still have no
idea of what to use the NAS for apart from streaming music). I love the
sound the SB3 produces but it's certainly not been trouble free and I
certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone that I know

Most people in the world have even less interest in how computers work
than me and I've struggled to make it work. I've persevered because the
combination of great sound and convenience is very alluring. But most
people are more interested in the convenience side rather than the
audiophile side.

Make it as simple as Apple make all their hardware or it will always be

The problem is that many new artists release albums with only one or two
decent tracks on them amongst obvious filler. That was true before the

ultimately led to musicians making their money from touring, not album

I will hold my hand up and admit that for certain artists, I only want

I'd have to disagree. I already have a PC and laptop I can use as a
remote. They would be nice as optionals but the total cost could blow
out.

All these other devices and software packages Slim would have to
support and that is expensive. There is a lot to be said for just doing
what you are good at and leaving the rest to others.

But then I work in IT and am comfortable around computers, it is not a
solution I'd recommend to friends who are not comfortable with
computers.

Re: [slim] Logitech Branding

Get over it. Logitech IS Slim Devices. Period. Hopefully a professional
programmer can finally give Slim Server and Soft Squeeze (and other
plug-ins written by amateur programmers) the slick feel that these
EXPENSIVE electronics need.

I am chomping at the bit to order a Transporter (having auditioned a
Squeezebox). While the hardware is first class, the software is
two-bit. It works okay, but you must be fairly computer geeky to
understand what is going on. Slim Server looks just plain ugly.

Slim Server, as it sits now, would be a call-line, tech-help mess for
Logitech. If they are smart, they will do a major interface fix on Slim
Server before they try to mass market their devices to the Best Buy
crowd.

This will, of course, not set well with the current, geekified
enthusiasts. However, remember this. You are not Logitech's market. You
already own one.

Let me add, that I too can be a geek. I like being a geek when I want
to be a geek. I don't like being a geek when incomplete software forces
me to.

I do agree with you, and, as far as I am concerned the aquisition of
Slimdevices by Logitech will bear good fruit. What I find unreasonable
from a marketing point of view, is that they should kill off the
Slimdevices brand, rather than invest on it as a high quality
subdivision, nothing more.

One of the benefits of open source programming is: if this ever becomes

The only disadvantage here would be that the forked software would be

There's one flaw in the strategy to monetise Slimsevices - it can't
play DRMed music.

Maybe they'll take a payoff from Microsoft to join the Zune 'social',
in return for dropping native support for FLAC?

Why on Earth would they have to drop FLAC in order to implement DRM? I
don't get it.

Are you implying that the firmware can't take both (this is true,
there's apparently little space left) or that Microsoft has an agenda

Boy, it's not going to make it in the market then!

 ...It's a different product aimed for a different market. Yes, it's a
market the consumer loves: dumbed-down, closed, inflexible, just
works because all the decisions are made for you.
Which is not necessarily a bad thing.
A couple billion dollars worth of marketing doesn't hurt either.

I'm not slamming the SB I'm just saying that at its price the ATV is
going to be formidable. I don't think the markets are different. If I
like FLAC I've got a couple of choices. I can convert to Apple Lossless
as my codec of choice or I can hack my Apple TV to support FLAC.
Calling the Apple TV closed merely means you have seen the level
hacking that has already happened.

The HDD has been easily upgraded
Since it runs OS X 10.4 enthusiasts have added to the Quicktime to
support Divx,3vix and other codecs. Perian (Perian.org) is easily
added.
VNC and SSH have been made to work as well as Apache.

http://www.appletvhacker.blogspot.com/ for more stuff.

Calling the Apple TV closed and inflexible with the huge amount of
hacks that have already been discovere merely means you haven't been
looking at the world around you regarding streaming players or have
succombed to tired Apple is proprietary diatribes.

I'm not here to bash the SB. It's just that the Apple TV has presented
such an amazing amount of tweakability if Apple doesn't pull the reins
back a bit who knows what people are going to find with this box.
Logictech/SD should take note and I'm sure we've got some nice stuff to
look forward to coming down the pipeline.

I said this before and I am trying to catch some attention again.

For gamers or people who wants cheap blu-ray out there in the
community, note that the Sony PS3 is potentially a killer Linux server
that should be millions of times more powerful than the NAS boxes.

The PS3 allows you to:
1. Swap in bigger nard disks seamlessly
2. Install Linux as dual boot
3. Plug in USB hard disks (there are 6 USB ports)

In terms of quietness, the PS3 is normally noiseless until the fan
kicks if the machine starts to overheat. That happened to me after I
left it on all night in a closed cabinet.

I have a PS3 but do not have the Linux skill to install Slimserver on
it. So I will have to bribe a Linux friend to do it for me sometime in
the future.

I like them better too, and the sound quality seems excellent. It would
be great to be able to use it on the Squeezebox. I asked on the plugin
forum if anyone would consider working on a plugin, but I don't think
too many people have tried listening to slacker.com yet, so they might
not be that motivated yet. I hope someone gets motivated though.

Probably your only option right now, and I think it will actually work.
The only thing is that it won't change until the next track starts or
the current one is restarted.

Use 'maxBitrate' and set it to 320 (or whatever) to go to mp3, and to 0
to go back to uncompressed streaming. Set the LAME quality level that
you'd like in the web interface manually, as that has no effect on Flac
streaming and can stay the same.

Huh?

Logitech Squeezebox 430?

I suppose the 430 indicates the number of install attempts until one
finds stability in the server software.

The N5200 NAS by Thecus is a suitable NAS for slimserver. It has a
pentium M for a CPU and is basically a Linux PC with a custom Linus
distro for this purpose.

I run SS on this and have no performance issues. I expect Infrant will
come out with a unit competitive to this but for now it appears the
N5200 or a roll your own is the way to go.

smaller flat-panels in as many locations as you can afford. Good luck.

I appreciate your input. I am glad that I am not the only one
recognizing the need for properly placed flatscreens. Just like you
can't pause a movie at a theater, you certainly cannot pause action at
a sports event. So when you're hungry or nature is calling, you have
to miss out on possibly the best play. Ice speedskating is a unique
sport in that it is likely world records will be broken or come close
to being broken at a given World Cup event. These are moments that
should not be missed.

With the consideration that the end user should have their insight
considered in the design of the end product, I would like to continue
this dialogue. If there are arenas in your specific geographic
location that have integrated audio and/or video systems that have made
the arena environment seem LESS like being in a big box, I'd like to
hear about them.

Thanks.

Nothing special here. As long as you have a local slimserver running you

[slim] Folder links

2007-03-29 Thread code-breaker

SlimServer Version: 6.5.1 - 11206 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1

For various reasons, I keep about half of my music on a drive in my
desktop box, and the other half on a usb drive. When I first set up the
server software, I pointed it to the folder on my desktop's drive. I
assumed that I could then create a link to the music folder on the usb
drive in the desktop drive, so that I could access both sets of music.
But this does not seem to work. Is there any way to do this?

Shortcuts are the way to go. If it isn't working for you, we'll have to
find out why. Did you do a full rescan after you added the shortcut?

If you turn on d_scan and d_info in Server Settings/Debugging you'll find
information about the scanning process in your log file. This might help
find out what's wrong. Search the log file for the name of your shortcut.
If the file is growing too huge, you might test it with an empty folder as
main music folder in which you put the shortcut to the external disk.

The motivation to collaborate on this is that you are the designer and
I am the builder. I learned a valuable lesson when I was self-employed
in lawn care. I gave my customers what THEY wanted (plus more), and
before long, their associates came to me for services. I hear about it
almost every day in the Seattle news--the Sonics need better
accomodation--Key Arena will not budge--Sonics look to build new
stadium outside of Seattle to accomodate their needs.

Yes, I will open this in your neighborhood. As long as we have a
particular sport in the Winter or Summer Olympics, everyone should have
relative access to being trained in that respective sport. The
direction I plan to take is to open Crossover Commons in Sumas, WA in
fall of '09, in time to accomodate teams from around the world to train
near Vancouver in preparation for the 2010 Winter Games. As is commonly
known, the available facilities really don't meet the needs for most
teams to adequately prepare for the Winter Games. Building in time for
the '09-'10 season is is a pivotal event in time to use as a springboard
to open similar facilities in Seattle, Portland, Sacramento,
Minneapolis, etc. So yes, the goal is to bring this to YOUR
neighborhood. Everyone should have equal access.

Yes, you WILL be able to login into my website and control robots that
shoot skaters with hot grits as they go by. Why shouldn't you have
that. For this venue to work, it has to be about YOU.

does NOT change anything within your lossless file, only the TAG info
that SB can read and compensate for.

You can also turn this function OFF on SlimServer if you don't want it,
but iVolume does a MUCH BETTER JOB that iTunes attempts.

To turn this off on the server go to the settings for your SB or
Transporter, check the AUDIO settings and at the bottom of the screen
look at VOLUME ADJUSTMENT/REPLAY GAIN. Change it to DISABLE VOLUME
ADJUSTMENT if you don't want it.
