Re: [slim] Slimserver hangs after remote streaming?

will check task mgr next time. By 'hung' I mean that SS no longer plays
to the SB3 and also the :9000 page doesn't load into IE either on the
host server or any other pc trying to view it.

A stop and re-start of the SS service cures it, but, I'd like to try
and stop it happening as I'm not at home when it happens (by default as
I'm remote streaming) and it stops SWMBO using it.

Have you checked the event log to see if slimserver has crashed in the

I have 2 WD MyBook drives, one of them died 3 days after purchase and
was replaced. I also had an episode of disk errors which was remedied
by running the disk check utility. Reading Amazon reviews, the WD
MyBook indeed has reliability issues but on the other hand priced very
attractively.
I considered buying a separate external enclosure but it seemed too
much of a hassle.
The new eSATA interface has a new connector and is unrelated to USB. It
needs native motherboard support or an adapter card, see

[slim] Library corrupted if NAS switched off

2007-05-03 Thread andy b

Hi, We've been having problems with tracks in the library disappearing,
and I think we've traced it to a problem that occurs if we forget to
switch on our NAS (where the music files live).

Briefly:

If we try to play an album and the NAS is switched off, it fails to
play as you'd expect.

Then we switch the NAS on, and we search for the album again and it
appears.

Then we press play, and the first track only plays.

If we look at the library, we find 3 entries for the album (instead of
one) and none of the entries has more than one track.

Even if we restart the server, the database seems screwed. The only way
we can fix it is to rescan the entire library from scratch.

Surely if the NAS is switched off, it shoudn't do anything to the music
library?

AFAIK SlimServer will try to keep its database up to date with your
collection. If it finds a song has disappeared, it's removed from the
library (or should be). If you shut down your NAS, SlimServer won't find
any of your songs - they'll be removed.

You really shouldn't do that.

I started getting suspicious of curious behaviour on my PC (where

[slim] Audioengine 5 Query

2007-05-03 Thread nolan

I've just received an pair of Audioengine 5 speakers in the UK
(purchased from Ecodigital)

I'm very happy with the appearance and sound quality when playing but I
have a niggling issue in that the speaker housing the amplifier emits a
faint buzzing sound which is noticeable when between tracks or when not
listening to anything.

The buzzing is not affected by the volume control on the speakers and
doesn't seem to be coming from the driver units, more like it's coming
from the amplifier circuit. It is also the same whether a squeezebox or
iPod is plugged in (or nothing plugged in at all).I can hear it from my
desk about 6' away so it's an annoyance when not listening.

Has anyone else heard this, is it likely to be a faulty unit or some
kind of environmental issue?

It's a full UK unit btw and was supplied with a UK plug and preset to
240v.

I've mailed Audioengine to get their thoughts but thought I would see
if anyone had experienced similar. They would be pretty much perfect if
it wasn't for this one issue!

Instead of drive letters you can map them to an empty folder if you're
using NTFS - that's what I do for my SB.

In Disk Management, in the properties of the drive in question, remove
the drive letter then add a mapping to your empty folder. Each drive
will need it's own but both could be sub-folders of a 'master' folder.

[slim] Playback issue: starts w/ 1st song even if I select 5th song

2007-05-03 Thread Matt Shelton

I've just discovered a brand new problem for me. I listen to albums, not
playlists. From the remote, I simply select ArtistAlbumPlay. Last
night, I wanted to play the 5th song in a album. From the remote, I
selected ArtistAlbumScroll to 5th SongPlayand the Squeezebox
started playing from the 1st song. I tested this with 5 or 6 different
albums and got the same result.

In contrast, if I select the song from the web interface (which is not
my preference, given that my p.c. and the squeezebox are in rooms on
different floors in my home), the selected song plays fine.

I'm attaching a d_source debub report. I tried to play a song called
Sol Topado, the 8th song in an album. Instead, what played was the
first song in in the album, Marching the Hate Machines. Any thoughts?

Re: [slim] Audioengine 5 Query

2007-05-03 Thread mortslim

The amplifier in your speakers is generating mechanical noise because
the transformer inside the amp is vibrating from the electricity and
the vibrations have not been properly dampened. A line conditioner
won't help because it is coming from the amp, not the current. That is
why you hear it at any volume setting. It is more noticeable of course
when your room environment is quiet. It is constantly there even when
music is playing so it is affecting the quality of the music too.
Audible mechanical noise is a general indication that the speaker is
not the best quality.

A good quality powered or active speaker won't have this noise.

I don't understand why I have seen several posts about these particular
speakers. You won't find them at a musical instrument store that caters
to professional audio engineers.

There are plenty of very good quality powered or active speakers on the
market. Go to a large musical equipment store, like Guitar Center, or
online at Musicians Friend, Zzounds, Sam Ash, American Musical Supply
and Sweetwater. Search for powered or active speakers and reference
monitors or near field montors. Smaller powered or active speakers are
in the category of reference monitors or near field monitors and they
are used by audio engineers to mix down sound tracks. You can't get
better than that. Larger powered or active speakers (10 inch woofer
and higher) are in the category of public address or PA speakers.

The speakers at the retailers I mentioned are not the powered
multimedia computer speakers you find at your big box outlets like Best
Buy. I am talking about speakers used by audio professionals who demand
the best.

Engineers don't get caught up with hype. They use their speakers to
make a living. They want the best quality, and quality requires quiet
speakers.

You may actually be *too close* to the router. The antenna on either
the Squeezebox or the router may have a close-in dead spot, *or* you
may be overdriving the receiver on the Squeezebox's wireless card
(causing distortion in the signal).

You may want to move the Squeezebox and router further apart to see if
it makes a difference.

confirmed my assumptions. Those speakers use 1/8 inputs and are
marketed for ipods.

The speakers I suggest you check out use 1/4 balanced inputs or XLR
inputs (for the highest quality audio signal). For your squeezebox,
you can get an rca to 1/4 adaptor to plug in.

Audio engineers use source material these days at 24 bit/96 khz and
above. Their needs are more demanding than the compressed music found
on an ipod.

Interesting that you would make assumptions on speakers you have never
heard based (in your first post) on no facts at all and (in your second

quite good. I suggest you audition a pair before you lump them in with

I, too, am a bit skeptical of speakers marketed to the Ipod crowd, but
I've heard too many good things about these speakers to dismiss them
out of hand. Historically, you're right that pro connections tend to
indicate better equipment, but there's no reason to jump to the
conclusion that because it has consumer-grade connections it's crap.
Why couldn't a company build a great, pro-grade monitor then stick a
mini-stereo connector on it for convenience and to sell more units?

In the same price range I'm probably more prone to pick up a pair of
Behringer Truth B2031A's (a LOT of speaker for the money) or perhaps
some Yorkville YSM1P's but these don't fit into every decor or
situation.

And besides, I've heard plenty of pro powered monitors that sounded
lousy (low-end stuff from edirol, tannoy and roland, for instance).
You start looking at the good pro stuff and you're easily double the
price of the audioengines.

Re: [slim] Internet Radio over PPP

2007-05-03 Thread Ron F .

Stuck again...

I tried switching to the Squeeze Network using my PPP connection to the
internet, and of course that did not work. The SB3 attempts to leave
Slimserver running on my PC, and switch directly to the internet, and
Slimserver can no longer provide the proxied connection it was when I
was simply entering a URL into Slimserver's Tune-in field!

So, if I am interested in streaming Live365 to my Squeezebox, it looks
like I still have to solve the original problem: How do I connect to
SqueezeNetwork from my SB3 when my Win2K machine is connected to the
internet via a PPP connection?

I tried installing Jana, as Michael recommended as a possible solution,
but I could not get that to work.

Any suggestions?

Re: [slim] Radiotime and Realaudio

2007-05-03 Thread wr420

Hi
Thanks for the info. I thought it was real audio because the message I
get on the SB is can't play real/fm/am see www.radiotime.com/sb
When I went to the radiotime site it mentioned it could stream mp3 and
wma to the SB but not rtsp so I thought the real/fm/am line was talking
about real audio.

So..how did you go about finding the url to the stream and should the
SB be able to stream rtsp streams from radiotime if alien bbc is
installed?

Thanks

I can't see anything for SQL or Slim or anything in the event log.

w.r.t. crashed or hung...I'm not sure. When it's in this state, you
can still select tunes directly via the SB3, however, despite what the
SB3 says, nothing plays.
The :9000 page won't load though.

Is there an event file within the slim directories that may reveal

Re: [slim] Audioengine 5 Query

2007-05-03 Thread nolan

Thanks for the replies so far.

I went for the Audioengines as this they are for an additional
Squeezebox in an office room where I wanted something compact that
would sound reasonable and I have seen some very positive reviews of
them.

I don't expect them to be as good as my main Squeezebox setup which
features a Mission Cyrus 2 + PSX and Quad 11L2 speakers.

I too was slightly dissapointed when I discovered they only featured a
1/8 jack input and I would rather they also had phono plugs so save
using an adaptor to atatch the squeezebox.

I am happy with the sound quality for the price but one thing I can't
stand is any kind of hum so it looks like I'll be contacting the
retailer tomorrow so see if they are prepared to swap them or offer a
refund.

Thanks Kyle for the feedback, it's good to hear they don't all do this
and the noise is distinct from the hiss heard with the volume at max.

I'm mailed Audioengine themselves but they haven't got back to me. I'll
see what the Ecodigital have to say tomorrow.

The service from Ecodigital was superb btw - ordered at lunchtime and
received the speakers the next day so they can't be faulted so far :)

For those audiophiles who want the cleanest sound possible when

It's from ART (Applied Research Technology) and called the Cleanbox

It's sold at the retailers I previously mentioned.

[slim] Forum Cleanup

I heard from some people here at Slim that the forums were getting a
bit unorganized, so I did a little bit of cleanup today.

I tried to organize them so they made a bit more sense with User and
Developer parent forum groups. I also grouped the User forums together
in a way that made a bit more sense to me.

So do you like it? Hate it? Let me know, and give me suggestions for
improvements too.

Re: [slim] Radiotime and Realaudio

2007-05-03 Thread bpa

Most of AlienBBC is to do with parsing BBC web site to get urls for
programs and streams. This is not relevant to RadioTime.

AlienBBC also sets up handlers for RTSP (realaudio) URLS and rm, rpm
and ram extensions. If radiotime delivers an URL in the correct format
- slimserver will run it.

I think RadioTime may mean FM/AM through a radio card in the PC when it
refers to real fm/am.

Finally - The Listen URL when tuning into Alice is a streamtheworld
URL which is specially set up to make users use a web browser to view
the ads.

To get the URL see the last post in the following.

Re: [slim] Wireless network strength?

The two transmitters are probably within each others' near field
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_field). Typically, wireless devices
are made to be operated in their far field. When they come really
close, they behave quite differently.

As a rule of thumb, transmitting radio antennas should be separated
from each other by at least a couple of wavelengths. The wavelength for
802.11b is about 12cm.

[slim] New SB3 owner - End of songs chopped off

2007-05-03 Thread tgraan

Windows XP on Dell laptop, CDs ripped with iTunes to Apple lossless,
approx 100G of music stored on a network drive, laptop and SB3
wireless.

Here's the problem. I can see my music files, select files to play with
Slimserver, and play them. However, all songs stop approximately 15 to
25 seconds from the end and the next song starts immediately. Nothing
wrong with the music files since they play completely in iTunes. Any
ideas on what is going on and how to fix the problem?

It's a known bug that, unfortunately, Slim has been slow in fixing.
It's been happening for over 6 months now. Current nightly releases
(versions beyond the stable production release) still exhibit the
behavior.

This bug drove me to convert my library to FLAC. But it is not an
option for everyone. It makes library management a little more manual
than iTunes. Say what you will about Apple, they know how to make an
interface that anyone can use.

You can file a comment on the bugzilla report. I don't have the number
handy at the moment.

However when I stream a ShoutCast it works perfectly.

I've tried this on multiple machines (Windows XP, Windows XP via

Re: [slim] Internet Radio over PPP

2007-05-03 Thread Ron F .

I got it working: I am now streaming SqueezeNetwork material, such as
Live365 to my SB3, over my PPP connection to the web.

It works like this: My connection to the web is via an EvDO cell phone
modem, (I have an unlimited data plan:) The modem is attached to my
Win2K machine, connected to www.squeezenetwork.com. I have this wired
to an access point, (my SB3 is wireless.)

The trick is to not allow the Squeezebox to attach to the access point
using DHCP. The reason for this is that doing so sets the SB3's default
gateway to the access point! Obviously, that won't work when running PPP
as there is nothing connected to the WAN port on the access point! The
SB3 needs to have its default gateway set to the IP address of the
machine that is hosting the PPP adapter! So, setting up networking
manually on the SB3, rather than letting DHCP do it fixed everything.

I also have internet connection sharing turned on for the PPP adapter
on the Win2K platform.

[slim] Command line option for controling playback

2007-05-03 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

I've got Softsqueeze playing music from my slimserver and want to be
able to have basic playback control using a lirc-compatible remote. My
plan was to use irexec to execute commands (/bin/sh equivalent). I was
imagining something in the style of either:

$slimserver -playerid -{next,previous,play,pause,vol_up,vol_down)

or

$softsqueeze -{next,previous,play,pause,vol_up,vol_down)

Had a look at the CLI interface but I don't see how to do this as this
requires logging into the slimserver.

Though my setup is linux based, I posted here since what I'm looking
for should be possible using cmd.exe in Windows.

Thanks for any advice.
