No problem loading SC web UI at http://127.0.0.1:9000 after installing,
but after PC shutdown and restart, I unable to load SC web UI even my
SC is running. My temporary solution is to reinstall SC to get back the
page. I have posted this in bug 6415.

Thanks.

The shortlist version is probably more useful if you have a very large

The results are excellent.

I do have a feature request: can it be made to ignore 'the' etc. (per

Hi Richard,

I did a minor update on the file creation error. Also the help screen,
when windows is not installed in c:\windows should work now. Can you
test this and let me know the results?
Can you also let me know:
- what paths you use as Starting folder and as Compilation folder?
- What cover art file names do you use? Cover.jpg and folder.jpg should
be supported if they are placed in the same directory the track file is
located. Is you filesystem case-sensitive?

Thx for the effort and nice to hear you (and others) find the script
also very useful.

If you have made any additions yourself please send them to also so I
can include them for maintaining a single 'master' version for other

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator for SlimServer

2008-01-01 Thread Richard Scales
I just ran the updated version and can confirm the following:

No error message once catalogue is created.

I must confess that I have not got a specific folder for compilations so I
did not specify one. Neither had I specified a starting folder though for
testing purposes I can see that it might help as running it against my
entire collection takes a while!

File system is not case sensitive (Windows) and I can confirm that cover art
is named folder.jpg, cover.jpg and I seem to have a lot of dlimage.jpg
(generated by a cover art generation script!) I assume that I could just
rename these to cover.jpg etc.

If I specify a starting folder in order to select a subset of my collection
then the artists displays perfectly - so it seems that it only displays
'various artists' for all albums if no starting folder is specified.

I expect that if I specify the root as the starting folder - it might work
just fine.

Thanks again for this - nice work.

Richard Scales

I know at least the Harmony 890 has some kind of RF, but I'm not sure

I personally have a Harmony 688 and recently also a Harmony 785 and I

Looking good! Main problems I am having:

- I have many albums with multiple genres and if I ask it to print
genres it only prints one of the genres seemingly at random
- I can't get it to exclude a genre - probably linked to issue above
- I have multiple hard drives and it doesn't find a second folder
inside my specified folder - i.e., it doesn't see the shoertcut to the
F:\ from the D:\ folder - only the D:\ folder is created

Thanks for what looks to be a great little app!

Thx for your reaction and testing.

Rick B.;253139 Wrote:

So what you actually would like is an option to display the genre of
each track instead of album based? Ordering multiple multi genre albums
based on genre is not possible i think (how would you like to output to
look?)but if you have a suggestion and more users want this I can see
if I can code it into the script?

Rick B.;253139 Wrote:

Indeed linked to the previuous request.

The script doesn't actually traverse directories. It looks at the
source location of a tracks as stored in the database. It does however
expect that all album tracks are in the same folder. Having album
tracks dispersed over several directories is not supported.

[slim] Organizing Music --Could use some help and advice

2008-01-01 Thread lreinstein

I am using Fishbone skin on the web interface for slimserver 6.5.4

I am also using ITUNES with my Ipod. I am trying to figure out the
best way to Tag and organize my music library. I am planning to re-rip
all of my CD's in Apple Lossless...I understand that there are
advantages to FLAC but want to keep things simple for
myself...especially since i intend to continue synching to my IPOD.

I could use some advice... keeping in mind that I am a newbie to most
of this and want to keep it all very simple and easy.

Some of my questions---

- When I click BROWSE I get a list of Albums with an alphabetical
index. Thus clicking B gives me all of my B albums. IS there a way to
get a complete list that I can scroll...not just limited to a single
letter?

- The Beginner Wiki suggests for Classical music to put the name of the
artist/composer at the beginning of the Album title. such as
Beethoven--Fifth symphony. Is this a good idea for pop music as well?
Would it help to have artist name before title of his/her album? Such
as Beatles-- Abbey Road as the Album Title for Abbey Road.

- I am not sure what to do about Genre assignments. I do not want to
assign multiple Genre's since iTunes/Ipod i believe does not support
it. So for example, would one put Norah Jones as Vocal, as Pop, or
Is there some wisdom that you could share?

- And again, I am not sure about the best and simplest way to make use
of the playlist features.

Thanks for your patience.

Downloader searches, I dunno, 8 or so data bases for artwork based on

retrieve artwork. For each CD, it retrieves 20-40 jpegs you can quickly
scan and choose from. I spend about 30 seconds per CD to choose, based
on the correct cover and image size. You click on the image file you
want, and it saves it to cover.jpg (or whatever), in the folder you
 want.

I was able to gather images for ~900 CDs pretty effortlessly. Highly
 recommended.

I used Album Art Downloader also. It worked extremely well, even
finding many covers that weren't available on Amazon.

To quote from the aricle But as albums move online, the album is
also losing its luster. Download services let consumers pick and
choose, and many buyers seem to do just that, snagging the hits and
leaving the rest behind. While digital distribution enables this, it's
hard to blame digital for the common perception that most top 40 albums
 contain their share of filler.

Padding out discs with mediocre tracks just won't work anymore, but it
might also keep listeners from discovering the deeper cuts on quality
discs. It's not just a sad day for music companies when customers
decide to cherry-pick one Josh Ritter song, for instance; it's a sad

Sadly, Ritter and his kind are the exception; so long as they are,
music fans will continue to grab the hits, and they'll do so online. At

Re: [slim] End of the Squeezebox?

2008-01-01 Thread tyler_durden

In the days before recording technology existed, musicians were paid to
perform.

Then recording technology was invented and the record industry was
born. Now musicians could get paid for making a recording and selling
copies (actually, the record company could get paid- the musician got
screwed, but that's another topic). A few could get paid far beyond
where any musician's work can be reasonably valued.

So we can say that for a while, recording technology and record company
distribution allowed the recording industry to get paid, with a little
left for the musicians. Technology marches on and the ease of
distributing recordings has rendered the record companies and their
massive distribution networks valueless. If the musicians can
distribute their recordings without the record companies, who needs the
record companies? They used to be a way for musicians to get paid for
producing recordings, but that is no longer the case. The only reason
for musicians to side with record companies these days is their hope of
getting a tiny piece of the file-sharing law-suit money.

What if we look at the situation this way: the era of money making on
recordings has passed- it was just a fluke that it came into existence
because of technology and now it's no longer viable. You can't make
money selling recordings anymore because they can be passed around on
the internet. Maybe it's time to just let it go and have musicians go
back to getting paid to perform. They can send out recordings to
promote their live performances. No record companies or lawyers
needed.

Yes, I know, musicians have been sold the lie of getting rich with
recording companies for so long they don't want to give up their dreams
of glory. But maybe they're not any different from the rest of us after
all. Sure, if I could package little bits of my work and sell copies I
be happy to do it, but I can't, and neither can most people. Why
should making music be any different?

You wanna eat? You gotta play!

Can anyone with any real electronics knowledge answer a couple of
questions?

1). I'm connecting 2 ATI AT1502 power amps (each 2 x 150W) through this

2). According to the Opto22 documentation, their SSRs always leak some

What am I doing wrong?

Re: [slim] Help with giving my server a static IP address

2008-01-01 Thread Efraim

Although your problem is solved already:

There is excellent alternative firmware available for your linksys
WRT54G, all linksys routers in fact.
www.dd-wrt.com

Running this on the router allows setting static dhcp leases based on
MAC-address, plus a ton of other options, not available in the default
firmware.
I run this on my router, and it works perfectly: stable and fast, no
problems encountered.

[slim] buggy Transporter

2008-01-01 Thread vett93

I have a Transporter and a SB3. The SB3 works reliably. The Transporter,
even though offers high quality audio, is not as reliable. I have to
power cycle it about once a week. I use analog output for both of
them.

The two common problems for Transporter are as follows.

1. No analog output: the simulated analog VU meters are moving but no
sound.

2. The unit restarts itself while playing music.

The Transporter's firmware version is 31 and I run 6.5.4 slim server. I
have reset the Transporter but still does not fix the problem.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

David

[slim] Issues with parsing iTunes xml file scanning

2008-01-01 Thread govardha

Hello,

I am running the latest 6.5 version of the Slimserver software. I am
running Mac OS X 10.5.1.

I run the following plugins in my system.
- SuperDateTime
- MyPicks
- iTunesupdate

Lately I am having significant issues with parsing the iTunes xml file
and hence all my playlists in iTunes. I have done numerous clean
rescans, and CLI wipe out db's and rescans, but in some static
playslists which contains for instance 25 songs, it just scans 12
songs.

I am at a total loss trying to figure what is going on? I tried using
the latest 7.0 software and it was such a pain in the ass and even more
buggy than this current version. Does anybody have any idea what I can
do to debug this problem anymore?

Best,
G

[slim] Connecting SB3 with remote server over internet

2008-01-01 Thread Efraim

Hi,

I have been searching on this forum for quite a while now for the
following:

Can I connect my SB3 with slimserver over internet? In other words:
outside of the local network?
I'm still in the process of getting slimserver to work on my NAS
(buffalo linkstation running Freelink firmware, which is a debian linux
distribution), which is in another network as my squeezebox.

Bringing the two devices together in the same network is not an option,
because of the limited uplink bandwidth of the network where the
squeezebox is (I am now able to stream my music to anywhere over the
internet, thanks to the firefly media server running on the NAS, and a
2mbps upload connection).

I don't fancy running slimserver inside the network where the SB3 is
either: I bought the NAS so that I don't have to keep a computer
running at all times.

I know that the responsiveness of the SB will suffer if it needs to
interface with a remote slimserver over a non-local connection, but
judging from the speed and reliability at which the SB3 plays internet
radio stations now, this won't be a problem.

I do have full control over the routers at both networks (one siemens
device and a linksys running DD-wrt) and the NAS.

Anyway: SB3 on one network and slimserver on the other - is this
possible? (also meaning that I want to control the music on the
SB3-side, without a computer)

Re: [slim] Connecting SB3 with remote server over internet

2008-01-01 Thread Fletch

Sure. When you set up networking on your player (press and hold left),
you can enter any IP address for the server. As long as a route
exists, it will connect and operate fine.

If you have NAT or a firewall between the SB and SC you will need to
forward 2 ports to SC. I believe the music stream and web control is
over 9000 and slim protocol runs over 3483

I think this is a good idea too - so long as it is even technically
possible to develop these SS enhancements at all. So at least at this
point, it sounds like there is no known (practical or technical) reason
these things couldn't be implemented? Thanks to everyone who has
contributed thoughts so far...

Re: [slim] Ports 1900 and/or 9335

2008-01-01 Thread radish

1900/UDP is the uPnP discovery port (http://www.grc.com/port_1900.htm).
There's an option (somewhere, I forget where!) to disable the uPnP
functionality in slimserver, although as you have discovered it does no
harm if it can't open the port.

Windows Vista works based on the capabilities of the hardware installed.
Windows Vista Capable PCs and Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs both are
geared for running Windows Vista but the experience varies with the

For you, maybe. I never use it (and I'm sure I'm not alone).

Also, you never know when that next Windows update will break SC with
no one there to fix it if development stopped.

I don't understand why you say that when you also mention the fact that
SS/SC is open source? The only thing that's closed is the firmware, so
any OS related problems can be fixed by anyone with a little perl
knowledge. A significant portion of the current software base was
developed by users and I have no doubt that would continue regardless
of what happened to SD/Logitech in the future.
