Re: [slim] New Wiki categories
Jim One thing to watch out for when coming up with the new structure - you need to be clear about the level of detail that you are going to deal with in any one place/page. On any topic you can think of, there will be a lot of detail which people will want to know ... but if you throw all that detail at someone who is just starting out, looking for some simple answers, you will very quickly lose them (see most wikis on Linux for examples of this!!). Another thing to remember is that if you over-structure all the information, it becomes useless to someone whose understanding is not sufficient to make sense of the structure you've defined. This is a bit like the problem with a lot of FAQ systems - if you can't phrase the question, you never find the answer. This was the thinking behind the structure of the current Beginners Guide pages which are deliberately written as a narrative - the only thing you need to know before you start is that you are a beginner. I'd hate to lose that... I thnk there may be as many as three different levels of information: 3 - the really detailed stuff 2 - a simplified how-to guide 1 - a narrative overview Just a few thoughts. [slim] Apple Subscription Service!
www.ft.com, March 19 2008 Apple in talks with music companies Apple is in discussions with the big music companies about a radical new business model that would give customers free access to its entire iTunes music library in exchange for paying a premium for its iPod and iPhone devices. The all you can eat model, a replica of Nokias comes with music deal with Universal Music last December, could provide the struggling recorded music industry with a much-needed fillip, and drive demand for a new generation of Apples hardware. Apple would not comment on the plan, but executives familiar with the negotiations said they hinged on a dispute over the price the computer maker would be willing to pay for access to the labels libraries. Nokia is understood to be offering almost $80 per handset to music industry partners, to be divided according to their share of the market. However, Apple has so far offered only about $20 per device, two executives said. Its who blinks first, and whether or not anyone does blink, one executive said. Detailed market research has shown strong appetite among consumers for deals bundling music in with the cost of the device, or in exchange for a monthly subscription, executives said. One executive said the research had shown that consumers would pay a premium of up to $100 for unlimited access to music for the lifetime of the device, or a monthly fee of $7-$8 for a subscription model. Apple, which is thought to make relatively little money from the iTunes store compared with its hardware sales, is also understood to be examining a subscription model. Subscriptions would work only for its iPhone devices, where it has a monthly billing relationship with customers through the mobile phone operators offering the device, while the comes with music model would work with iPhones and with iPods. The subscription models under discussion in the music industry include the provision for customers to keep up to 40 or 50 tracks a year, which they would retain even if they changed their device or their subscription lapses. Other music groups are understood to be in talks with Nokia, which is keen to sign up as many of the major labels as possible before launching its first comes with music devices in the second half of this year. At last the days of CD scanning are all over. It will be a great day for consumers but the impact on Apple is pretty amazing as well: As well as killing off amazon.com and making sure they control content as well as hardware, apple can extract the best possible deal from the record comapnies due to thier larger market share and kill off competition. In addition they can drive sales of higher capacity iPods. -- willyhoops willyhoops's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10563 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45000 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Sorting albums by artist and some other bugs???
Hi, In browser view: HomeAlbums sorting by 'Artist, Year, Album' is chosen. Some albums are listed by aritst, some are listed by Band (album artist). However, it seems that sort order is always by artist. What it means is that compilation albums that are listed by albumartist are sorted randomly, out of order, for their albumartist - they show on the list randomly, sorted by their highest ranked artist that is. For example: 1. album 1 by Bach 2. album 2 by Bach 3. album 3 by Jacques Loussier Trio 4. album 4 by Bach 5. album 5 by Glenn Gould 6. album 6 by Bach where album 3 is a compilation of baroque artists that includes Bach and album 5 is Goldberg Variations (all Bach, and Glenn Gould album artists). BTW, I know it can be chnaged by ...SORT tags, but the default behavior doesn't seem right. As a second issue, why is album 5 listed by band (Glenn Gould) when it is not a compilation - Bach is the only artist? And, since I'm at it, looks like number of artists reported varies from screen to screen. Home screen reports (what appears to be a number of cleen artists + album artists), while HomeAlbums screen reports total number of artists, standalone and compilations; 400-ish vs 700-ish in my case. thks, K -- slimkid The sound stage will open up, bass will tighten and the imaging will improve. [slim] Squeezebox Duet song repeat behavior not working properly?
Hi, It seems to me that song repeat behavior does not work as it should with the Duet. When I browse to a rhapsody playlist and select play all it plays the entire playlist and repeats all of the songs. However, if I browse to a playlist, then select a specific song, it repeats that song over and over. It would seem to me if I wanted to repeat a specific song over and over, I would browse to that song via title, or album or artist NOT through a playlist. If I have gotten to the song through a playlist, it would seem that the best user experience would be to then repeat OTHER songs in that playlist. Same goes for if I am playing a playlist, and want to go to a specific song next. If I select that song once the playlist has already started, currently it repeats that song over and over. I submit it should repeat the playlist over and over. Is this behavior by design? If so, can you include an option to toggle between the two, or change it to what I would say is the better experience. If not, am I missing some setting or something? Thanks for your help! Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter and real media streams in favorites
The issue seems to be something to do with identification of playlist. If you change the file custom-types.conf in Plugins/Alien as follows (add the 2nd rtsppl line) - then the RAM URL works although I'm not sure if it will work for all RAM URLs. Re: [slim] Song Repeat Behavoir in Playlists
No this is not the same as the other thread. I am saying that if you select a song to play when browsing to a playlist, it should then move on to the NEXT song in the playlist once that song is done playing. Even if I pus the play button to play the song in the playlist, it repeats that song over and over again. I am suggesting that should not be the case. If I have browsed to a playlist, it should continue playing THAT playlist, not the song that I wanted it to start with. Currently, the only way I can get it to repeat ALL of the songs of the playlist is to hit play at the playlist title, not hit play on any individual song in the playlist. [slim] Vista and missing music
This is a Vista issue - but affects Squeezecenter. I am looking for one of the gurus on these forums to point me to a solution - which I believe is tied to Vista permissions. SqueezeCenter 7 running under Vista Home Premium. Data stored on internal 320Gb SATA drive (K:). Music folder is (was, burt see below): K:\media\FLAC Folder shared as \\server\media\FLAC Ripping CDs to FLAC on wireless XP (SP2) laptop. Copy ripped FLACs to \\server\media\FLAC Folder format below FLAC is Artist\Album\flac files I currently have ~180 artists and ~200 albums When I copy my newly ripped flacs to the server, they do not show under the Music Folder browse. Rescan - and they still do not show up. Now - here is the wierd thing (in my opinion)! Sit on the Vista box (shame there is no RDP in home versions :-( Look in: \\server\media\FLAC and the new folders/files are there Look in: k:\media\FLAC and the new folders/files are NOT there. (Old folders are there that were copied from a USB to the hard drive under Vista) Point Squeezecenter to \\server\media\FLAC instead of \\server\media\FLAC and rescan and all of the music shows up. So there are no problems with SC, but this threw me for a loop. I assume this is a privelidge issue, but no idea where to look (couldn't even figure a meaningful way to google it!) Anyone have any ideas - it's disturbing to have 2 windows side by side pointing to the same folder and have different files showing! Thanks for reading this Habs BTW - when I first got the Vista box my SB3 constantly disconnected and cut-out - it was due to Symantec 2008. Re: [slim] New Wiki categories
ceejay;281293 Wrote: Jim One thing to watch out for when coming up with the new structure - you need to be clear about the level of detail that you are going to deal with in any one place/page. Ceejay Not to worry, ceejay, we're keeping the Beginner's Guide category. To address the other comments about good information being available only under the Beginner's Guide, we can use multiple categories to make that info appear in other places. For example, if we use [[Category:Beginners Guide]] [Category:Ripping]], it has two paths from the ToC to the content. -= Jim -- JimC well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that. -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44957 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Multiple Receivers and SBC
You can get a good first hand experience by installing and running SoftSqueeze (see Extras in the SC7 interface). Depending on how many computers you have on your network, you should be able to simulate at least one additional zone. Softsqueeze syncing has traditionally not been as efficient as with the hardware boxes, but I believe this has been improved in SqueezeCenter. Otherwise, this is from the SB3 manual: Controlling Multiple Squeezeboxes with one SlimServer Any number of Squeezeboxes on your local network can connect to a single SlimServer. Each player operates independently of the others, so you can play different music on each one. You can also synchronize them to play the same music in every room of your house simultaneously. If you have more than one player connected to your SlimServer, a drop-down list will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the web interface so that you can choose which player to control. To synchronize multiple players with the web interface: 1. In the web interface, click on Player Settings, then Audio. 2. Re: [slim] Kitchen radio Squeezebox?
I like the idea of an all-in-one unit for the kitchen myself. The downside of a homebrew application is the lack of buttons on the device itself. What would be ideal would be an all-in-one device that is optionally under cabinet mountable, available in kitches-friendly colors (white, stainless or black) and had the duet controller's buttons and scroll wheels, all in a package that'll withstand a little splashing and the use of greasy or otherwise less-than-ideal fingers messing with the controls. Why? IMHO all kitchen appliances are hands-on, remote control not required and contrary to the way most people operate in their kitchens. Of course, a Duet controller could be added (or you can use one you already have) and a basic IR controller like the SB3 has would be a nice feature for those who do like remote controls in a kitchen appliance, and for non-kitches uses, since this could be a multi-purpose device (kitchen, garage, back yard, the middle of nowhere connected to squeezenetwork). Oh, and for kitchen use it can be plugged into AC, however it will need some sort of battery option for outside use. -- jrfuda jrfuda's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15514 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44896 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] New Wiki categories
Some thoughts on page sizes and layout. Many people that are looking for help will probably be using two browsers so that they can see what they are reading for help as well as the thing they want help on. I'd guess that they will use a browser size around about 800 pixels tall (based on a 17/19 inch screen). This will allow them to easily switch between windows and let them see a little of both. I then suggest a newspaper trick of above the fold. Try and keep the important information in the top half of the page without needing to scroll. If someone isn't quite sure what they are looking for they will decide if the page is what they are looking for very quickly based on what they see without scrolling. Think of the way you use search engines and check out the pages returned. As CeeJay said that style starting with a simple narrative leading deeper as the user gains confidence and experience is more approachable. -- Zaragon Zaragon's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14577 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44957 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] How Add to Playlist?
This is going to be embarrassing, I'm sure. Using SqueezeCenter 7.0 on Windows XP. Listened to a song, clicked Save and gave a title to the new Playlist, and successfully added the first song to the new playlist. Then found another song, but couldn't figure out how to add it to the newly started playlist. Clicking Save in the lower right corner of the right window just seems to start a new playlist. Clicking Add in the playlist on the left window opens a box, but do I type in the path to the song? Just can't quite figure out how to add a second song to a playlist. [slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection
Hi, I have 3 squeezeboxes and recently added a receiver and a controller. All works well - but the controller spontaneously loses network connectivity every few days - it still says it's connected to the wireless network but cannot find the music server or the players. the players themselves and squeezecenter work fine all the time (even while the controller is throwing a flunky) and always have done on the same network - no changes. Re: [slim] Swimming pool version of controller...
I was thinking the same thing. This summer i will use the controller outdoors constantly, but how am i going to make it survive? I am going to build some sort of contraption that i can set it in when i'm not changing the song, station, or volume. whatever i make will be a multi purpose gadget. Some sort of 'hinged' lid to keep the controller dry, and also a spot to set my beer or drink in, keeping it out of the sun. I use 'coolies', but i still like to set my drink in the shade, while i sit in the sun. I will put some pics up after i make it. -- m1cross m1cross's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14602 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44986 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
