Yes, you absolutely can. I too choose my music almost exclusively using

albums using Windows' file structure and I still find it quickest to

Re: [slim] New Wiki categories

2008-03-19 Thread ceejay

Jim

One thing to watch out for when coming up with the new structure - you
need to be clear about the level of detail that you are going to deal
with in any one place/page. On any topic you can think of, there will
be a lot of detail which people will want to know ... but if you throw
all that detail at someone who is just starting out, looking for some
simple answers, you will very quickly lose them (see most wikis on
Linux for examples of this!!).

Another thing to remember is that if you over-structure all the
information, it becomes useless to someone whose understanding is not
sufficient to make sense of the structure you've defined. This is a
bit like the problem with a lot of FAQ systems - if you can't phrase
the question, you never find the answer. This was the thinking behind
the structure of the current Beginners Guide pages which are
deliberately written as a narrative - the only thing you need to know
before you start is that you are a beginner. I'd hate to lose
that...

I thnk there may be as many as three different levels of information:
3 - the really detailed stuff
2 - a simplified how-to guide
1 - a narrative overview

Just a few thoughts.

[slim] Transporter Price Australia

2008-03-19 Thread goopie

I love my little Squeezebox, however the better sound quality of the
Transporter is so tempting. $2k sounds a reasonable price,
unfortunately in Australia the price jumps to $3k. The Australian
dollar is nearly on par with the US dollar, so it seems someone is
making a pretty hefty mark up on the price in Australia, even allowing
for shipping.
Anyone like to comment?

If you insert a SD card you might be able to copy the fonts on the card, puting

The SBC certainly makes an ad-hoc wireless connection to the SBR during
configuration, but I don't know whether or not it will retain that
connection if there is no other wireless network availble. If I
understand your question correctly, that is your intention: your wired
router would not have any wireless running, so the SBR would be the
only wireless access point. Is that correct?

WAV files don't do tagging. There is a way to fake it using RIF WAV
headers, but it is non-standard and there is only limited support (it
was included in SqueezeCenter to support old Audiotron users).

It also means that unless you transcode WAV to FLAC on the server while
playing yu will get half the duration of music in the internal buffer
and take twice the network bandwidth to get it there. This will
probably tripple, or quadruple the chances of getting network dropouts
 in a wireless setup :)

Transcoding also has it's problems, more load on the server, lack of
 fast forward and rewind etc.

As for the classical tagging I havn't got a clue, there are others that
should be able to help with that.

 Hi

Not exactly a Newbie but having had CHKDSK delete all my music, yes I had a

Two, probably asked a million times, questions:

 1) With hard drives costing peanuts, is there any reason not to store the
music as WAV files, rather than spending time convertig them to FLAC? Or is
there some tagging issue with WAV files?

 2) I tend to listen to Classical quite a bit and the composer is important
to me. Does tagging the files as Composer, Artist/Performer, Album Title,
Track Title, etc. make sense?

 Thanks a million.

Glad that's working better for you. Kind of lame I have to point you to
a different browser to make the 770 work again, but if this turns out to
be an Opera issue, there may be no other solution.

As to the search options, I eliminated them. If you search on a string
from the nokia770 skin it will give you results from all three

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-03-19 Thread Butane Bob

I am thinking about getting a Duet. I am a little concerned about a
comment on the Amazon UK website though, quote:

-'I bought a Duet to supplement my Squeezebox 3. To my chagrin the
range of the wifi for the receiver with the Duet is considerably less
than for the older Squeezebox. The result is that I cannot stream music
except within the room where the router is located. At anything over 40
feet away there is no reception, where the previous model plays clearly
sixty feet away. Normally you expect newer models to be better, not in
this case. It is a shame because otherwise the Duet is awesome. I have
about 600 CDs ripped losslessly to my hard drives and the sound through
the Squeezeboxes to my hifis is indistinguishable from the CDs
themselves. If you have a small house or apartment go ahead just don't
expect to stream through any distance.'-

My intention is to have my Duet two floors down from my wireless router
to replace my SB3 which I will move to a different part of the house, so
I am a bit concerned about this comment - should I be?

[slim] For Sale: Nokia 770

2008-03-19 Thread KJAM

I bought the 770 to be used generally as a remote interface for my
Squeezebox (using the Nokia 770 skin) and to wirelessly stream internet
radio. It served these purposes extremely well. Obviously, it also works
wonderfully as an internet tablet, as it was designed. It will also
except up to a 2GB memory card for storing and playing your media.

It has been very lightly used and in excellent physical and working
condition. It was purchased only 8 months ago and comes with the box
and all of the original accessories. It gets so little use these days
that I can not justify keeping it any longer.

I am asking for $115 shipped to anywhere in the USA via priority mail.
I will except payment through Paypal.

Please let me know if you are interested and would like any additional
information. Pictures can be provided if necessary.

Thanks!

Same here - no problems (and I have pretty thick walls).

That said, the orientation of the Duet vs the SB is different (so
presumably the wireless aerials are too?) which may account for what
that the reviewer experienced. I would have suggested standing it on

[slim] Apple Subscription Service!

2008-03-19 Thread willyhoops

 www.ft.com, March 19 2008

Apple in talks with music companies

Apple is in discussions with the big music companies about a radical
new business model that would give customers free access to its entire
iTunes music library in exchange for paying a premium for its iPod and
 iPhone devices.

The “all you can eat” model, a replica of Nokia’s “comes with music”
deal with Universal Music last December, could provide the struggling
recorded music industry with a much-needed fillip, and drive demand for
a new generation of Apple’s hardware.

Apple would not comment on the plan, but executives familiar with the
negotiations said they hinged on a dispute over the price the computer
maker would be willing to pay for access to the labels’ libraries.

Nokia is understood to be offering almost $80 per handset to music
industry partners, to be divided according to their share of the
market. However, Apple has so far offered only about $20 per device,
two executives said. “It’s who blinks first, and whether or not anyone
 does blink,” one executive said.

Detailed market research has shown strong appetite among consumers for
deals bundling music in with the cost of the device, or in exchange for
 a monthly subscription, executives said.

One executive said the research had shown that consumers would pay a
premium of up to $100 for unlimited access to music for the lifetime of
the device, or a monthly fee of $7-$8 for a subscription model.

Apple, which is thought to make relatively little money from the iTunes
store compared with its hardware sales, is also understood to be
 examining a subscription model.

Subscriptions would work only for its iPhone devices, where it has a
monthly billing relationship with customers through the mobile phone
operators offering the device, while the “comes with music” model would
work with iPhones and with iPods.

The subscription models under discussion in the music industry include
the provision for customers to keep up to 40 or 50 tracks a year, which
they would retain even if they changed their device or their
 subscription lapses.

Other music groups are understood to be in talks with Nokia, which is
keen to sign up as many of the major labels as possible before
launching its first “comes with music” devices in the second half of
 this year.

At last the days of CD scanning are all over. It will be a great day
for consumers but the impact on Apple is pretty amazing as well:

As well as killing off amazon.com and making sure they control content
as well as hardware, apple can extract the best possible deal from the
record comapnies due to thier larger market share and kill off
competition. In addition they can drive sales of higher capacity iPods.

Tim-- I've determined your browser isn't being recognized incorrectly,
but this is a heretofore unseen CSS bug. If you edit the slimserver.css
file in the nokia770 folder of your SC installation, find the area for
the 'pagecontainer' layout and change width from 100% to 96%. You'll
see the horizontal scrollbar disappear, however you'll also see other

workaround it.

Re: [slim] Apple Subscription Service!

Of course it will have DRM - you can't let someone downlaod all the
music and then give thier friends a copy!

The french ruling that consumers should be able to covert purchased
music between formats is not going to apply to this. Indded, it's of
course one of the reasons for the move.

Not sure if that part is tongue in cheek - but there's an alternative
view here:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/03/19/apple_itunes_unlimited/

I haven't seen any report which clarifies whether Apple is planning to
maintain DRM as part of this new model or not. If so, that would start
to look a lot more susceptible to challenge under antitrust rules.

In other words, the radio stations that are listed as not supported

There is something odd in Favorites about handling playlists and RAM is
a playlist.

Instead use the URL
rtsp://live.wgnradio.com:5544/encoder/wgnlive.rm

However to play that station make sure you have installed the sipr
codec for mplayer as that station uses the old format.

[slim] Sorting albums by artist and some other bugs???

2008-03-19 Thread slimkid

Hi,

In browser view: HomeAlbums sorting by 'Artist, Year, Album' is
chosen. Some albums are listed by aritst, some are listed by Band
(album artist). However, it seems that sort order is always by artist.
What it means is that compilation albums that are listed by albumartist
are sorted randomly, out of order, for their albumartist - they show on
the list randomly, sorted by their highest ranked artist that is. For
example:

1. album 1 by Bach
2. album 2 by Bach
3. album 3 by Jacques Loussier Trio
4. album 4 by Bach
5. album 5 by Glenn Gould
6. album 6 by Bach

where album 3 is a compilation of baroque artists that includes Bach
and album 5 is Goldberg Variations (all Bach, and Glenn Gould album
artists). BTW, I know it can be chnaged by ...SORT tags, but the
default behavior doesn't seem right.

As a second issue, why is album 5 listed by band (Glenn Gould) when it
is not a compilation - Bach is the only artist?

And, since I'm at it, looks like number of artists reported varies from
screen to screen. Home screen reports (what appears to be a number of
cleen artists + album artists), while HomeAlbums screen reports total
number of artists, standalone and compilations; 400-ish vs 700-ish in
my case.

thks,

K

[slim] Squeezebox Duet song repeat behavior not working properly?

2008-03-19 Thread mikerasmussen

Hi,

It seems to me that song repeat behavior does not work as it should
with the Duet. When I browse to a rhapsody playlist and select play
all it plays the entire playlist and repeats all of the songs.

However, if I browse to a playlist, then select a specific song, it
repeats that song over and over. It would seem to me if I wanted to
repeat a specific song over and over, I would browse to that song via
title, or album or artist NOT through a playlist. If I have gotten to
the song through a playlist, it would seem that the best user
experience would be to then repeat OTHER songs in that playlist. Same
goes for if I am playing a playlist, and want to go to a specific song
next. If I select that song once the playlist has already started,
currently it repeats that song over and over. I submit it should
repeat the playlist over and over.

Is this behavior by design? If so, can you include an option to toggle
between the two, or change it to what I would say is the better
experience. If not, am I missing some setting or something?

Thanks for your help!

Mike

The issue seems to be something to do with identification of playlist.

If you change the file custom-types.conf in Plugins/Alien as follows
(add the 2nd rtsppl line) - then the RAM URL works although I'm not
sure if it will work for all RAM URLs.

Code:

  rtsppl rm,ram,rpm ? playlist
  rtsppl ? audio/x-pn-realaudioplaylist
  rtsprtsp: ? audio
  smilpl smilapplication/smilplaylist

Re: [slim] Song Repeat Behavoir in Playlists

2008-03-19 Thread mikerasmussen

No this is not the same as the other thread. I am saying that if you
select a song to play when browsing to a playlist, it should then move
on to the NEXT song in the playlist once that song is done playing.
Even if I pus the play button to play the song in the playlist, it
repeats that song over and over again.

I am suggesting that should not be the case. If I have browsed to a
playlist, it should continue playing THAT playlist, not the song that I
wanted it to start with. Currently, the only way I can get it to repeat
ALL of the songs of the playlist is to hit play at the playlist title,
not hit play on any individual song in the playlist.

Maybe I am missing a setting or something?

[slim] Vista and missing music

2008-03-19 Thread cjhabs

This is a Vista issue - but affects Squeezecenter. I am looking for one
of the gurus on these forums to point me to a solution - which I
believe is tied to Vista permissions.

SqueezeCenter 7 running under Vista Home Premium.
Data stored on internal 320Gb SATA drive (K:).
Music folder is (was, burt see below): K:\media\FLAC
Folder shared as \\server\media\FLAC

Ripping CDs to FLAC on wireless XP (SP2) laptop.
Copy ripped FLACs to \\server\media\FLAC
Folder format below FLAC is Artist\Album\flac files

I currently have ~180 artists and ~200 albums

When I copy my newly ripped flacs to the server, they do not show under
the Music Folder browse.
Rescan - and they still do not show up.

Now - here is the wierd thing (in my opinion)!
Sit on the Vista box (shame there is no RDP in home versions :-(
Look in: \\server\media\FLAC
and the new folders/files are there
Look in: k:\media\FLAC
and the new folders/files are NOT there.
(Old folders are there that were copied from a USB to the hard drive
under Vista)

Point Squeezecenter to \\server\media\FLAC instead of
\\server\media\FLAC and rescan and all of the music shows up.

So there are no problems with SC, but this threw me for a loop. I
assume this is a privelidge issue, but no idea where to look (couldn't
even figure a meaningful way to google it!)

Anyone have any ideas - it's disturbing to have 2 windows side by side
pointing to the same folder and have different files showing!

Thanks for reading this

Habs

BTW - when I first got the Vista box my SB3 constantly disconnected and
cut-out - it was due to Symantec 2008.
Even with all LAN traffic enabled in the firewall rules, I suspect that
the packet checking was not efficient and killing the streaming. Even
the network interface disappeared in certain scenarios! No problems
since removing it.

[slim] Controller not responding

2008-03-19 Thread FB67

Running SqueezeCenter on ReadyNAS NV+. One SB3, one Controller. Last
night everything worked fine, tested it for a few minutes and went to
bed.

Came home from office today, the Controller apparently ran out of
power. I didn’t realize that it was possible to switch it off.

It has been charging for a couple of hours now, then I powered the
Controller up again, but it never gets further than the Logitech logo
screen.

I have tried to restore the Controller settings by powering off,
holding the “Add” key pressed while powering up again. Nothing happens,
the Controller stops at the logo screen.

Any ideas?

Re: [slim] New Wiki categories

2008-03-19 Thread JimC

 Ceejay

Not to worry, ceejay, we're keeping the Beginner's Guide category.
To address the other comments about good information being available
only under the Beginner's Guide, we can use multiple categories to make
that info appear in other places.

For example, if we use [[Category:Beginners Guide]]
[Category:Ripping]], it has two paths from the ToC to the content.

- Yes
- Yes but with minor issues
- No
- It does not work at all

I have managed to test the script using a local and temporary SC7
configuration.

The output is great.

I thought useful to report a couple of bugs that I have encountered:

1. When a single album has multiple artists (like in classical music or
in jazz) the tracks are duplicated (or triplicated)

2. When an album has multiple genres, the scrips generates one album
(with the relevant cover) for every track of the album.

GREAT WORK!

Re: [slim] Is there a way to get SB3 to pass through 24 /96 digital?

2008-03-19 Thread Pale Blue Ego

SB3 can usually handle 24-bit/96kHz, by throwing out every other sample,
but it tends to stress either the CPU or the bandwidth. The best way is
to convert the file to 24-bit/48kHz FLAC. SB3 can handle this with no
problems.

 GREAT WORK!

Often those problems are inconsistent tag related. Can you maybe post a

Re: [slim] Multiple Receivers and SBC

2008-03-19 Thread ds2021

You can get a good first hand experience by installing and running
SoftSqueeze (see Extras in the SC7 interface). Depending on how many
computers you have on your network, you should be able to simulate at
least one additional zone. Softsqueeze syncing has traditionally not
been as efficient as with the hardware boxes, but I believe this has
been improved in SqueezeCenter.

Otherwise, this is from the SB3 manual:

Controlling Multiple Squeezeboxes with one SlimServer

Any number of Squeezeboxes on your local network can connect to a
single SlimServer. Each player operates independently of the others, so
you can play different music on each one. You can also synchronize them
to play the same music in every room of your house simultaneously.

If you have more than one player connected to your SlimServer, a
drop-down list will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the web
interface so that you can choose which player to control.
To synchronize multiple players with the web interface:
1. In the web interface, click on Player Settings, then Audio.
2. In the Synchronize section of the page, choose the player that
you#8217;d like to synchronize. Click Change.

The Duet manual has much less. Both should probably have more.

Re: [slim] Kitchen radio Squeezebox?

2008-03-19 Thread jrfuda

I like the idea of an all-in-one unit for the kitchen myself. The
downside of a homebrew application is the lack of buttons on the
device itself.

What would be ideal would be an all-in-one device that is optionally
under cabinet mountable, available in kitches-friendly colors (white,
stainless or black) and had the duet controller's buttons and scroll
wheels, all in a package that'll withstand a little splashing and the
use of greasy or otherwise less-than-ideal fingers messing with the
controls.

Why? IMHO all kitchen appliances are hands-on, remote control not
required and contrary to the way most people operate in their kitchens.
Of course, a Duet controller could be added (or you can use one you
already have) and a basic IR controller like the SB3 has would be a
nice feature for those who do like remote controls in a kitchen
appliance, and for non-kitches uses, since this could be a
multi-purpose device (kitchen, garage, back yard, the middle of nowhere
connected to squeezenetwork). Oh, and for kitchen use it can be plugged
into AC, however it will need some sort of battery option for outside
use.

Re: [slim] New Wiki categories

2008-03-19 Thread Zaragon

Some thoughts on page sizes and layout. Many people that are looking for
help will probably be using two browsers so that they can see what they
are reading for help as well as the thing they want help on.

I'd guess that they will use a browser size around about 800 pixels
tall (based on a 17/19 inch screen). This will allow them to easily
switch between windows and let them see a little of both.

I then suggest a newspaper trick of above the fold. Try and keep the
important information in the top half of the page without needing to
scroll.

If someone isn't quite sure what they are looking for they will decide
if the page is what they are looking for very quickly based on what
they see without scrolling. Think of the way you use search engines and
check out the pages returned.

As CeeJay said that style starting with a simple narrative leading
deeper as the user gains confidence and experience is more
approachable.

[slim] Squeeze controller losing network connection

2008-03-19 Thread tomlillie

Hi,

I have 3 squeezeboxes and recently added a receiver and a controller.
All works well - but the controller spontaneously loses network
connectivity every few days - it still says it's connected to the
wireless network but cannot find the music server or the players. the
players themselves and squeezecenter work fine all the time (even while
the controller is throwing a flunky) and always have done on the same
network - no changes.

Also the controller permanently believes there is a software update.

any ideas?

thanks

Re: [slim] Swimming pool version of controller...

2008-03-19 Thread m1cross

I was thinking the same thing. This summer i will use the controller
outdoors constantly, but how am i going to make it survive? I am going
to build some sort of contraption that i can set it in when i'm not
changing the song, station, or volume. whatever i make will be a multi
purpose gadget. Some sort of 'hinged' lid to keep the controller dry,
and also a spot to set my beer or drink in, keeping it out of the sun.
I use 'coolies', but i still like to set my drink in the shade, while i
sit in the sun. I will put some pics up after i make it.
