Re: [slim] Enable Album Art when browsing music by folder

2008-03-26 Thread DuetOwner

Thank you JJZolx!

I browse by folder as I listen to world music and thus my music was
name and arranged by hand. When I browse by album some of my folders do
not appear in the list. For example there is a folder names as DTS
tracks to check Bit Perfection and it has a file named as,
DEMO2_DTS. This folder doesn't appears in browse by album list but
only appears if I browse by folder.

How should I name the folders and files in them so all the folders and
files appear when I browse by album?

Re: [slim] FYI be aware of Mac adress when using Wol

2008-03-26 Thread fcm4711

Hi all

Sorry for the confusion. The behavior when to learn the server mac
address has been changed to be semi-automatic. If you factory reset SB
it will be reseted to 00:00:00:00:00:00 and learned new when you
connect to your SC. From then on it sticks. (You could also manually
change it to 00:00:00:00:00:00 to force SB to learn it again upon next
SC connection.)

The reason for this is that there are some folks which have their SC PC
behind a wireless bridge and then SB would learn the wrong mac address.
(The one of the bridge instead of the PC), so the server mac address
can be entered manually and is not overwritten.

Hope this helps

Felix

I was going to make the same suggestion.

But then it occurred to me that as McAfee is currently using port

change.

Perhaps he needs to turn McAfee off (maybe disconnect from the internet
first), make the change as you suggest, and then turn McAfee back on.

Mac address filtering has all the time been disabled

At the moment I can control my SB3 Classics but not the Receiver using

the SB3 Classics but not Receiver at the moment. Controller is still
 connected through Receiver.

Just to clarify things, your controller can either use an existing AP
or the receiver to establish a wireless connection.
In either case the controller doesn't communicate with any player
directly. It only communicates with the server (Squeezecenter) which in
turn communicates with the player.
If you can control your SB3 but not the receiver when the controller is
connected to the AP this suggests that the receiver isn't connected to
the AP (assuming you use the receiver wirelessly).
Please also try channels 1 and 11 on your router.

(Edit: I see that I have to force COMPILATION=0 [as opposed to no

Keep in mind that SC treats albums as a compilation if it finds more

One solution is to tag the files with COMPILATION=0 (as you did). If
I'm correct this will however lead to the album being listed as album
by artist A, artist B and the album will be listed under both
artists.
I usually don't list guest performers in the artist field but append
them to the track title, eg. (feat. artist A)
Guest artists don't appear in the artist list this way but they can
still be found by a quick search.
I don't want albums to be listed under an artist if that artist only
appears as a guest performer on one or two songs on the album.

YMMV, of course.

I'd bet there's something running on port 9000. SC can't start because it
can't use port 9000. And you get some odd answer when opening that address in

I just read in another thread, that McAfee is actually using port 9000 itself.

Googling around for McAfee and port 9000 brought up some reports about .Net

[slim] Typical range of Duet in ad-hoc (Bridged) mode?

2008-03-26 Thread Lesu

What is the likely range I can expect if I use the controller in ad-hoc,
so called Bridged Network mode? The manual hints that it will be much
less than using Wifi. I need to know because if it is too short a
distance then I'll have to factor the cost of a range extender into the
Duet total price. I want to use the Duet controller in the back yard to
play music on exterior speakers. Range around 20m maximum with glass or
glass+ 1 wall blockage depending on where the Duet receiver goes in the
system.

If the files don't have tags that SC can recognize it tries to guess
tags based on the file name and directory structure.
Take a look at Server settings - Advanced - Formatting - Guess Tags
Format.
You can enter your own format or rename your files to match one of the

The info on the now playing screen gets stuck too. After a controller
reboot, it will sometimes behave properly for a while, then get stuck
and stay that way.

When stuck, the now playing screen will sometimes even say 'Paused'
along with the track info while music continues to play.

When I skip to the next track, the pop-up info at the bottom indicates
the correct track, but the old pic remains. I'm running SC on a

Re: [slim] Typical range of Duet in ad-hoc (Bridged) mode?

2008-03-26 Thread Zaragon

I don't believe that range extenders for Wifi will operate in ad-hoc
mode. So unless you already have an access point (or wireless router)
you would be better getting a real access point/wireless router (you
don't need to use the router bit).

The range will be greater with a true AP. Of course range though is
subject to many factors, location, attenuation through walls/other
materials as well as local interference.

Re: [slim] Selective indexing?

2008-03-26 Thread Zaragon

I think you are out of luck. SC indexes all the tags it can see. If it
can't see the tags in a file then it tries to guess them using the
directory and filename structure.

You could remove all the tags from your MP3s and rely upon guessing.

You could always try the custombrowse and customscan plugins to sort of
filter them out. As I haven't played with those plugins I can't be sure
but I am aware that you can effectively create multiple libraries which
sounds like what you want to do.

I just found one more clue. It appears it gets stuck on the current
info/pic when the Controller goes to sleep (screen turns off). After
it wakes up, no more fresh 'now playing' info. I restarted the SBC a
few times to confirm.

However, this doesn't happen on on tracks that have no artwork. If the
big music note is displayed when it goes to sleep, all is fine on wake
up.

I don't intend to operate in adhoc mode if I go for a range extender
solution. I have a Wifi router that can be used for direct access, but
only if I add some form of wireless extension to boost the signal from

mode direct to the Duet receiver placed just inside the house and wired
back to the router, I won't need to buy a wireless network extender.

Re: [slim] Controller Performance Problem

2008-03-26 Thread radish

I haven't noticed the issue you are seeing. I would point a couple of
things out though based on what you've said so far.

1) It's my understanding that the thumbnails needed for SBC display are
generated on the server during the artwork scan, not on demand. This is
done specifically to avoid issues like this which can spoil the
experience. You can check the status page to make sure the artwork
portion of the scan is running and is taking a reasonable amount of
time.

2) From what I can tell the artwork grabs are async with the track
listing grabs. In other words, if for some reason it is slow to get
artwork (and I've seen that at various points in the beta process) the
track listing still comes up quickly, but the art thumbnails are loaded
afterwards. If you're seeing the listing itself not coming up quickly
I'd suspect a different (though possibly related) issue.

You said the music is on a NAS but the server is on a PC, what is the
connection between the two? Is the server's DB and cache on the PC or
the NAS?

Unfortunately, although customers themselves try to give tips on

Radish, thanks for your thoughts on this (I thought for a while this
thread was going to be a bit of a one sided conversation;-)

The artwork scan on SC7 has been completing successfully (I am not at
home at the moment so cant check the run time) as I can see the artwork
in various sizes via the SC7 interface.

What I have noticed though is that if I have Show Artwork enabled on SC
(i.e. in the playlist pane), it definitely takes longer to populate than
just showing text descriptions for each track. As previously noted, this
was affecting the playback of the first few seconds of a track i.e. the
SB3 or receiver would stutter until the playlist (in SC) had been
fully populated with thumnails for all tracks in the playlist. This
suggested to me that on SC at least, the display of thumbnails for
tracks subsequent playback was a synchronous process. Disabling
artwork (in the playlist) fixed the lag/stutter problem.

What I am seeing on the controller mirrors the above problem on SC.
However, whereas disabling artwork fixed the lag issue on SC, it didnt
on the controller. When scrolling through a list of albums on the
controller, the thumbnails are being generated asynchronously as the
artwork fills in as you scroll which is a nice way of doing it.
However, selecting an album or New Music is when I see the lag.

This was the reason why I surmised that if you click on an album with
say 12 tracks, the controller was making 12 requests to SC to fetch a
thumbnail from it's cache for each track ( for albums, I would expect
every track to just use the album artwork anyway unless a different
image had been embedded in the file).

Perhaps the artwork is a red herring, or perhaps it only manifests
itselfs with wireless networks (where there is a bit more latency). I
am sure that one of the developers could answer this fairly quickly,
but am not sure how to raise this with them, short of waiting for them
to stop by the forum. I think the controller is a brilliant product (
I realise that it will get better with each firmware release), but at
the moment, these lags do spoil the usability somewhat.

Just as an FYI, I have SC7.0.1 running on a dedicated Vista PC dual
core/2GB RAM) with a wired connection to my (Infrant) NAS. SC's cache
db is on the PC in the default location. I have a wireless connection
from my SB3 and receiver to the PC server.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but my post seems relevant to the

I'm interested in the SNR for the controller. What is the range of
possible values? Is it 1 to 100? And, more importantly, what is
considered the lowest optimal SNR value? I would assume, that as long
as the receiver is not experiencing hiccups, then the SNR does not
especially matter. But still- I'm interested in how my wireless setup
rates in terms of SNR.

As you can't access the web interface you'll have to edit server.prefs

a line httpport: 9000 - just change it to eg. 9001 and restart SC.

[slim] Few artists sort with last name

2008-03-26 Thread Nikhil

I've noticed this only recently after updating to SC 7 - a few artists
have suddenly started sorting with their last name rather than first
name. I have looked at the tags and can't seem to find anything
unusual. Does MusicBrainz Picard put in some 'normally not visible'
tags that SC can read?

Two examples are Tori Amos who now hangs out under 'A', rather than 'T'
where she used to live before, and Damien Rice who has suddenly moved
into the 'R' block from the 'D' block.

Any ideas?

What I have noticed though is that if I have Show Artwork enabled on SC
(i.e. in the playlist pane), it definitely takes longer to populate than
just showing text descriptions for each track.

That doesn't surprise me, this is a web page after all so each element
is a seperate request and assuming your browser is following the normal
rules it will only make a couple of requests in parallel at a time.

As previously noted, this was affecting the playback of the first few
seconds of a track i.e. the SB3 or receiver would stutter until the
playlist (in SC) had been fully populated with thumnails for all tracks
in the playlist. This suggested to me that on SC at least, the display
of thumbnails for tracks subsequent playback was a synchronous
process. Disabling artwork (in the playlist) fixed the lag/stutter
 problem.

It's not synchronous, but it does sound as if one is stepping all over
the other. For whatever reason, the server can't get audio data to the
player and get images to the browser at the same time. Normally I'd say
there was an issue with disk I/O, CPU or network bandwidth but from your
descriptions those shouldn't be an issue. Have you tried the server
performance tests under Help?

What I am seeing on the controller mirrors the above problem on SC.
However, whereas disabling artwork fixed the lag issue on SC, it didnt
 on the controller.

Well, you can't disable artwork on the controller :)

When scrolling through a list of albums on the controller, the
thumbnails are being generated asynchronously as the artwork fills in
as you scroll which is a nice way of doing it. However, selecting an
album or New Music is when I see the lag.

They shouldn't be being _generated_ but rather transmitted, they should
all be in the server's cache. Regardless, my guess here is that the call
to get track album art is sync as it was assumed the list would be much
shorter. But that's only a guess.

This was the reason why I surmised that if you click on an album with
say 12 tracks, the controller was making 12 requests to SC to fetch a
thumbnail from it's cache for each track ( for albums, I would expect
every track to just use the album artwork anyway unless a different
image had been embedded in the file).

Yup, I would think that's what's happening. You can't make assumptions
about the image being the same though, as albums and playlists aren't
treated differently. I would think the initial request for track data
includes the filename/URI of the image - the controller caches some
itself so I assume it's smart enough to only request a given image
once.

I am sure that one of the developers could answer this fairly quickly,
but am not sure how to raise this with them, short of waiting for them
 to stop by the forum.

They're around plenty :) In your case where there isn't a clear bug I
wouldn't suggest a ticket right away, but you might want to give the
helpdesk a call if you continue to have problems, they're pretty good
at this stuff.

[slim] New RadioTime Features

2008-03-26 Thread radiobill

RadioTime is steadily organizing the world of free radio for your
remote. Send your feedback, so we can make it great and keep it free.

NEW RADIOTIME FEATURES

RadioTime improvements from the SqueezeNetwork and SqueezeCenter arrive
today.

* Press play from the title (no more drilling down to a specific
stream).

* Now playing displays the station or show name (instead of Play |
64KB).

* Use the search button to find a station or show.

* Automatic backup streams on failure if there are multiple compatible
stream s available. Press Next to manually jump to an alternate
stream.

* Live show time remaining options. When a show broadcast is available
from more than one station, you can still navigate to pick a particular
station. Now you'll find them sorted in groups of how much time is
available.

* On-demand shows. Where an on-demand option is available for a show
you'll find navigation options to listen. Not all of these on-demand
streams are compatible with the SqueezeBox and they are not being
filtered, so you may see playlist failed to parse for some.

* Jive displays station and show logos for easier recognition.

No. Go to http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/

Should I do a manual install, which I hope will do an update of the
 current install.

 current: SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0 - 16779 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252

Ordinarily this would work as there is a settings migration script for
6.5.4 - 7.0 on Windows, but you appear to have a very old beta
version, the release version is 17793. This may be before all the
files were renamed from SlimServer to SqueezeCenter (at least on the
Linux builds, not sure about the Windows builds).

Backup your prefs file, not sure where this is on Windows and the 7.0
betas renamed it, it may be server.pref, slimserver.pref,
squeezecenter.pref or even slimserver.conf. Try just installing the
release over your version and see what happens. If your prefs are gone
try copying the backup file over.

Unfortunately there were a lot of changes in the betas, the prefs file
format may have changed and you may have to reinstall from scratch.

[slim] Scanning not picking up title... Custom Browse/Scan issue?

2008-03-26 Thread adamslim

Having been playing with Custom Browse a bit and rescanning, I seem to
have run into a major issue - I've lost all my track titles!
Symptoms:

- Every track is called something like 1: 10,000 Maniacs - In My
Tribe
- Nothing under track details when I look at it within SC.
- Other tags are being read - year, genre, custom ones
- The titles are still there on MP3Tag (I didn't do some major format
value and then close it like I first thought!)

SC v7.0 17793, latest custom scan and browse (latter installed not long
prior to the problem...)

Ideas? Just revert to an earlier Custom Browse?

hi Bill-- lots of great comments in your post, thanks for taking the
time to post that.

On the delay when hitting search Artists/Albums (you didn't mention
Tracks, which will be MUCH worse): I fixed that on our development tree
and you'll see that delay disappear entirely when 7.0.1 is released.

Also, I think the important take-home on that 5-6 room limitation
talking point is that it's largely bogus. The limitation is not
SqueezeCenter or Squeezeboxes, it's newtork bandwidth and CPU power.
Throw enough of both at the problem (fast server, wired network) and
you can go well beyond that.

Coming up with a rule-of-thumb limit is useful for the masses, who
can't be bothered with details (no offense, masses, we love your
orders). The assumption is that they are typically installing on a WiFi
network, which will be your bottleneck (don't let Sonos make you believe
they don't have hard limits there either; they have become FUD-spreaders
of late).

Re: [slim] HELP - Cannot get SqueezeCenter 7.0 to run on XP to use with Duet.

2008-03-26 Thread Mark T

Hi Michael,

Tried shutting down McAfee related services / processes within Task
Manager and finally got squeezecenter 7.0 to start.
I think it was a McNAS process or the Update service was is already
using port 9000. Anyway knowing that it was McAfee that was stopping it
from running I then change the port to 9001 as described in you
previous message and it now works a treat.

Any idea why it did not show up when we were looking for services
already using port 9000 ? Is it because it was a firewall process with
some special cover up or hide process is in place ?

Many Thanks for your valued help and assistance.

I take it from the forum that you actually work for Logitech / Slim
devices ? If you do I would just like to pass back as bit of feedback
on the new product.

The product so far is excellent and is exactly what I had been looking
for and waiting for. I do think however that the instruction book
included in the retail pack is very poor and believe the pack should
actually include the document you later need to search for and download
from the internet site.
The document in the pack fails to explian the vital information on the
initial setup of the reciever if you want to use the Hybrid or bridged
network arrangement.
After several hours of faffing around wondering why the reciever won't
accept a DHCP address, you turn to the website to find this much better
document that explains everything.
To help others I would suggest that you at least put a note in the box
telling people to download the document from the website and bin the
one included in the box.

Are you planning on releasing a NAS with Slimserver already loaded ?

Best Regards
Mark.

The software update menu always tells you there's an update available
even if it's the one already installed. There's no need to check
manually.

Re: [slim] Few artists sort with last name

2008-03-26 Thread Nikhil

You're right. There were additional ARTISTSORT and ALBUMARTISTSORT tags
in there. And my hunch that it had something to do with MUSICBRAINZ
also turned out correct. So I guess I have 2 options there. I can
either

(i) go into the tags and remove all that info wherever its present (I
recall coming across a thread earlier today where someone was trying to
remove an iTunes Volume Normalization tag - I guess this should be
procedurally similar)

or, if possible, and I would prefer this,

(ii) have slimserver ignore these specific tags.

Re: [slim] Controller Performance Problem

2008-03-26 Thread Rar

I experience a similar problem. Sometimes it just takes ages for the
controller to load Artists. Very annoying, when trying to skip to
something different. Can't seem to find a pattern. The connection is
very good.

And a sidenote: It's not logical that in order to start in the middle
of an album, you need to select the entire album and then skip to the
track you wan't to hear. If you select a track it should just continue
with the next song on the album.

I can't think of a way to get SS to ignore those tags. One possibility -
if you want to hold on to the data - would be to copy the tags from say
ARTISTSORT to ZZARTISTSORT, which will be ignored by SS. You would then
retain the option of copying it back later.

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet

2008-03-26 Thread DaveBrennan

The good news is that I received my duet last week and installed it over
the weekend. This is in now working fine.

The bad news is that only one set of UK adapters were shipped with the
package, so I could recharge the controller or power the receiver.

After a bit of hunting I found another adapter from my blackberry
charger, so all was well.

Calling the Logitech help line was unconvincing that this will be
resolved so I liberated another addapter from work. They wanted me to
send the package back so I could have a new one.

But I think anybody receiving these units should check that there are
two sets of adapters for the two power supplies in the package.

[slim] SC when PC not logged in

I just upgraded from SlimServer to SqueezeCenter.
With SS, I could use my SB2 even if the PC with my music on was not

This no longer works - the PC has to be logged in for the SB to even
start up. I don't believe that I've changed anything else. Any

[slim] Duet power consumption and user habits

2008-03-26 Thread sapnho

Search was unsuccessful, so maybe someone can help: What is the power
consumption of the Duet receiver on/off (from my experience with
squeezebox the difference will probably not be huge). Do people usually
power it off? As the receiver isn't really visible - the great WAF
advantage in a non infrared environment ! - it is easy to forget to
switch it off. Maybe an automatic sleep mode would be useful.

The other item is the controller. Is it recommended to turn it off? How
much energy does it use? It takes so long until it powers up again. I
guess here again people don't bother to turn it off. Any views?

would wiki radio solve this? or putting these net sreams into faves?

[slim] Grave doubts about Logitech 'support

2008-03-26 Thread snoogly

I was wondering if Logitech Support has helped anyone resolve a problem,
without having to do a clean install of the software (slimerserver or
squeezecenter).

I contacted them earlier this year with an issue, and they had only one
answer: deletes all traces of the software and do a clean install. As
this would mean losing all the various settings I have done to the
server, and plugins, I really didn't want to do it. So I ignored them,
and managed to find an answer elsewhere. Once someone told me what to
look for in the log files, I tracked down a troublesome file in a music
folder, deleted it, and everything worked fine again.

I got the feeling that Logitech Support either didn't know how to
really troubleshoot a problem (on a Mac anyway), or that they do - but
telling people to wipe everything and start again is easier. I fear the
latter is true, as this time the 'first tier' of support told me to do
just that, without any attempt to track down the problem. I have now
been promoted to the 2nd tier, and low and behold they are saying the
exact same thing - before they have even attempted to find out what the
problem really is.

This kind of 'Support' might be normal in a Windows environment, but as
a Mac user (and very long term slim devices customer) I find it shoddy
and lazy.

Has anyone managed to get real support from them? If so, could you let
me have the name of the support staff who helped you? I am beginning to
wonder if anyone there really understands the nuts and bolts of the
software.

Sorry if I sound riled - but I am. I do not consider this to be
'support' at all.

First of all, your subject is just a bit melodramatic. To have grave doubts
about something like this is taking things a bit too seriously.

Second, you have to realize what perspective the support people are coming
from. Most people haven't invested a great deal of time in their player
settings and are most interested in getting their music playing ASAP.
Digging around in log files is the LAST thing most people calling support
want to do. They want it fixed, and they want it fixed an hour ago. For
most people, doing a clean install is the FASTEST way to resolve a problem
and get their music playing again. For those that have other priorities
there are certainly other options available to them and you have done well
for yourself -- congratulations.

Re: [slim] Grave doubts about Logitech 'support

2008-03-26 Thread radish

Their job is to get you up and running as quickly as possible, so that
they can move onto helping the next customer. In _many_ cases a problem
is due to a corrupted installation, bad cached data, custom settings,
third party plugins, etc and so doing a clean install will either fix
the problem right away or make the subsequent troubleshooting much
easier. I've never called them myself but I've heard a lot of praise
for SD support in the past, certainly more than most other helpdesks.

I find your Mac comment quite entertaining given Apple's recommended
solution for pretty much any iPod problem - restart and reinstall!
(http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/ipod5gen/). Same goes for

Re: [slim] HELP - Cannot get SqueezeCenter 7.0 to run on XP to use with Duet.

2008-03-26 Thread th00ht

You can find out what is running on a port by using the rather helpful
TCP view program
(http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx or
http://www.google.com/search?hl=enq=TCPVIEW if microsoft decides to
move things around).
Download, install, start, and look which program is listening on port
9000.

Re: [slim] Grave doubts about Logitech 'support

2008-03-26 Thread Phil Leigh

snoogly;284052 Wrote:

This kind of support is the norm for any kind of equipment as it solves
90% of problems.
My understanding - having monitored these forums for many years now -
is that SD support is way way above what you get from most manufacturer
support forums. YMMV.
Touch wood I have NEVER had to contact SD support. But I've seen many
happy customers who have. The same cannot be said for lots of
manufacturers

Re: [slim] Scanning not picking up title... Custom Browse/Scan issue?

2008-03-26 Thread erland

What happens if you temporary disable the Custom Browse plugin and
restart SqueezeCenter ? Does that make it work again ?

If it still doesn't work, I don't think it is related to Custom Browse.

What are your title formats set to in SqueezeCenter Settings/Interface
?

Does the same problem occur both in web interface and on the
SqueezeBox/Transporter display ?

When I realized that the problem was somehow related to rebooting, I
changed SqueezeCenter to start as a service. Now it is behaving
correctly after reboot.

Re: [slim] Problems setting up receiver

2008-03-26 Thread EliteAV

Having now spent another 3 hours trying to get this bl**dy thing to
work, I am calling it a day will be sending it back to the retailer.
There is either some really obscure bug in build 22 of the firmware
relating to encrypted wireless networks or it's an intermittent
hardware fault.

I actually had a 2nd Duet on backorder with another retailer due this
weekend, it will be interesting (to put it politely) if the receiver
has the same issues.

I have a ticket open with support on this, but am not optimistic of a
breakthrough there.

[slim] SC won't start as a service before logging on with last FM enabled?

2008-03-26 Thread Aswin

Hi,

Does anyone have experience with this? And maybe have a solution?

I use to start SC as a service. I often have my computer on without
having logged on in Windows Vista to listen to my SB. However since I
enabled Last FM my SB won't find SC. That is, while I haven't logged
on. After I log on SC can be found. If one of my family members logs on
my SB still can't connect to SC.
I suspect a failing connection to last FM while I'm not personally
logged on is the cause of this. Remember, I didn't have this problems
before I enabled Last FM.

Re: [slim] Grave doubts about Logitech 'support

2008-03-26 Thread Fletch

I don't work in any kind of tech support (anymore), but I try to spend
some time supporting users on these forums. I generally avoid
suggesting the start over and reinstall solution, but it's always in
the front of my mind. IMO, by the time someone has contacted support
or posted on the forums, he has probably tried 5 or 10 things on his
own that didn't work. The chances that these unsuccessful fixes have
broken things that are unrelated to the original problem are
significant. I'd rather start debugging a problem with a clean
installation.
