[slim] Squeezebox 3, Airport Extreme, and Networked External USB Hard Drive: Does It Work?
Have any of you tried hooking up an external USB hard drive to an Apple Airport Extreme router and using that combo as your music server for the Squeezebox 3 (rather than using a dedicated computer as your server)? What has your experience been with this kind of setup? Major glitches, or mostly smooth sailing. The reason I'm asking is because there have been many complaints on numerous Mac forums about how inconsistent the Airport Extreme/networked external USB drive setup is (drive won't show up on a laptop computer, streams music in a very glitchy way, etc.) Thanks for your help in advance. [slim] How to get faster album art load in web gui?
After a few hours of poking and prodding, SC 7.0 is playing nicely with my XP box, but one nagging problem removes some of fun from this otherwise HUGE step up in GUI. I am assuming these are cached in such a way as to load quickly, but this ain't happening. Is it wrapped up in the cookies that SC now uses to track preferences (a very bad idea on many levels, a simple gui preferences page would be WAY more friendly and easy to alter). [slim] Feature Request - Auto Playlist with latest Podcasts
Hi, I had an idea today that I would love to have added to the Squeezecenter feature set. I love to listen to my favorite Podcasts on my SB3. Sometimes I like to setup a playlist on the fly that lines up all of the latest Podcasts I subscribe to and then sit back and let the SB3 play them in order. Basically, my own personal radio news program. Right now this is all a manual process. I can't see anyway to tell Squeezecenter to automatically play the latest Podcast from a defined set of Podcast feeds? It seems that most of the components for this are there but the automation part is missing. Adding some kind of scripting component to Squeezecenter might be the ticket. Maybe a plugin could do this? Re: [slim] How to get faster album art load in web gui?
Let me start by saying that what you are experiencing isn't at all normal. My album art loads up in less than a second. However, people will need a bit more info from you to work out what the problem might be. First, what OS are you running (XP, Mac, flavour of Linux)? How much RAM and memory does the box have - is Squeezecenter using a lot of resources? Is your music stored on an external networked drive? Do you use Itunes or MusicIP integration? The most interesting question for me is when you say Where/how is the art cached stored and accessed? - that will depend on how you've downloaded and stored the album art in the first place. There are a couple of ways to achieve this - either putting an .jpg or similar in each album folder, or embedding the album art into the files, or having a central repository of album art. Either way the files should be in the same directory as your music. Two more thoughts - how big are these album art files when you click into them? Anything more than 500x500 is unncessary (lost of people use 300x300) and this may be slowing the album art down a lot. Finally, do you have a virus/security program on your box that does on-access scanning (everytime you access a file it checks it for suspicious activity)? This could be slowing the process down a lot too. -- Siduhe Siduhe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=723 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46708 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] File corruption with iTunes over NFS
Hello, I have discovered a problem that I have failed to trace. It it this: sometimes when iTunes is used to modify tags on a song, that file becomes corrupted. First my setup: Squeezebox 3, SqueezeCenter on a Linux (Fedora machine) with an NFS-mounted music collection. iMac with iTunes accessing that same music collection, also via NFS. The NFS-server is a Fedora machine as well. What I do: I rip a CD track (using the program Max) to Apple Lossless. That file is placed in the music directory (mounted over NFS). The file plays fine on the Squeezebox and in iTunes. But when I use iTunes to modify tags of the file, that file becomes corrupted. When playing, there are brief, intense pulses of noise. That noise is clearly visible when using a visual sound editor such as Audacity. It is definitely the action of rewriting the tags that causes the file corruption. This does not happen with all tracks, but when it happens with a track it happens all the time. Easily reproducible. To test, I stored that same file/track on a local disk on the iMac. Now, iTunes causes no problem when rewriting tags. It is only when iTunes modifies tags in songs that are on an NFS-mounted drive. I do not have this problem with any program other than iTunes. I have never experienced file corruption with other programs. Has anyone seen this before? Any hints on how to troubleshoot, pin-point the problem? Any help in finding a solution? Re: [slim] Slow / No Access to SqueezeCenter
Ah, this is driving me up the flaming wall now. I uninstalled SC7. Deleted its folders from ProgramFiles and Application Data. Deleted all IE7 cache. Ran a registry scrub. Rebooted. Fresh download and install of SC7. During this the SqueezeTray icon hung at starting squeezecenter - after the initial setup questions, ie do you want to use itunes etc. Nothing would bring it to life, so run startup options, told it to start as service (no username/password etc - just the one pc with one user with all drives internal) and rebooted. finally got SC7 to start, but STILL the web gui won't open first time. If I open IE7, go to http://127.0.0.1:9000/ it just hangs with the spinning thing on the green background. Close IE7, reopen and try again and it's sort of working. It hangs the entire PC initially (but then again it always has done) and evenutually it opens the SC7 web gui. It's still not great though, lots of random positioning of bars - ie if I open Albums the grey bar with library stats always appears halfway up the left-pane, even on maximised screen. minimise/maximise repositions it correctly. I truely, honestly haven't changed anything on SC7 (my settings are all as they were before I reinstalled) - so it must be a fault on my machine, I guess either Kaspersky or IE7. But I haven't changed any settings on those, so I can only think some sort of update has caused it? What can I do to help? What logging do I turn on at what level? I've attached server.log, but I just tried all of this about 19:20 my time, and there's no entries that match that time in server.log. I've attached server.log and a jpeg showing my Windows/IE7 ver numbers. Any help appreciated on this, it's truely annoying. I guess the T-amp would work, the price is right, and the tiny current draw mostly eliminates the need for the auto shutoff. Low power output is a potential issue, but I suppose for listening most of the time There are plenty of amps out there, but how to shut them on/off? Also, many are several hundreds of $$. [slim] SqueezeCenter gapless syncing seems much worse than SlimServer
I have just installed SqueezeCenter having used SlimServer for a couple of years now. Gapless play works perfectly on both versions with one SB3, but with 2 sync'd SB3's SqueezeCenter seems a lot worse. I get gaps between tracks of upto 10 seconds, although more normally a couple of seconds. I thought SC7 was meant to be vastly improved with regards to sync'ing?? My wireless network performance seems fine, running on a 2GHz PC with XP Pro so that side of things should be fine. I read that the developers have no plans to improve this. Re: [slim] More reasons to love DRM
A few years ago Apple decided to reduce the number of devices on which people could play their music and unilaterally made the change without prior notification. When you buy proprietary stuff, you are at the mercy of the seller. They can modify the terms of the purchase contract at any time (read the contract- it's in there!). That means they can change the number and/or types of devices the files can be played on, or they can even turn them off completely by no longer providing access to keys to unlock files (as was done by MLB). As long as people are dumb enough to pay money for this sort of crap, companies will sell it. As for Apple- they have a lossless compression format that is proprietary. Why would they develop their own when open source compression formats exist? Because they want control. If the format is proprietary you don't know what else they put in there. Maybe ability to gather stats, maybe an ability to turn files on and off. Who knows... Why trust them? One thing everyone should know about every company that exists is that they are NOT there to serve their customer's interests. They are there to serve the interests of the shareholders and the only thing that matters is money. No matter what PR a company puts out about not being evil, don't trust them. They exist to separate you from your money and in some cases, they will stop at nothing to do so. Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter gapless syncing seems much worse than SlimServer
SC7 sync *is* vastly improved over SlimServer. Long tracks stay in sync now, poor network conditions don't throw off sync anymore. Stuff that didn't work well at all now works perfectly--I think it's fair to call that a vast improvement. That's not to say all sync bugs were fixed. For example, gapless sync was broken before SC7, and it continues to be broken after SC7. No significant change as far as I'm concerned. You've expressed that you don't mind the degree to which this feature is broken in SlimServer, but many people, including myself, consider SlimServer's gapless sync so badly broken that it's unusable. Half a second or five years, a gap is a gap. I can't see how SlimServer's behavior was even remotely tolerable, so SC7 is no worse. I don't know where you've read that the developers have no plans to fix this but that is not true. There is already a bug filed on this topic and the developers involved have expressed an interest in fixing it. It is an extremely difficult problem to fix, however, and the fix is unlikely to be done anytime soon. I don't think, however, that there are any plans to revert from Broken Gapless Sync Method #2 back to Broken Gapless Sync Method #1, because it wouldn't actually fix anything and it would break the sync improvements that were actually delivered with SC7. -- CatBus CatBus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46722 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Same problem on XP SP2 w/ all updates etc.. 6.5 never worked on start up either until I tried giving it admin privileges to startup (a strategy that doesn't seem to work with 7.0). SC 7.0 changed the rules. But it still doesn't start up, either as service or .exe,. The tray icon shows starting but never does. Disabling zone alarm and/or McAfee doesn't help. Strangely, an identical box the with same version OS and SC etc., same antivirus, starts every time since installation. I tried fooling my balky box by making a shortcut to the squeezetray.exe file and sticking it in the Programs/Startup folder (shades of Windows '95). That works about every other startup or so. I tried setting it up as a service, no joy there either...SqueezeMySQL shows as stopping in Task Manager, but never actually stops, and can't be stopped from TM or services.msc. -- Fleury Fleury's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9783 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46730 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You can also look at some of the discussion in the threads in the Beta and/or Developers forums. Look especially for posts by user awy, who did most of the rewriting for sync. Re: [slim] Slow / No Access to SqueezeCenter
FYI - Kaspersky A/V has a poor track record at abiding by its own settings. You can configure it to ignore certain files or executables, but it does not work reliably. Its frequent but not-well tested updates cause all sorts of transient problems. One update causes issues, then they disappear with the next. This is especially noted in their Web protection area, where for apparently no good reason, web pages stop loading completely or entirely. Disable both its File AntiVirus and Web Protection and test again. Because Kas caches the network connections, you should close the browser after disabling these features and re-open. If this finds no relief, uninstall Kaspersky (you can always safely reinstall w/out loss of license), and test again. -- MrC MrC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=468 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=4 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] How to get faster album art load in web gui?
I clocked a full load of all thumbs in the web gui this afternoon at 95 seconds...My thumbnails were set to 100 in SC Settings. Tunes are individual folders with m3u and art etc. All art is folder.jpg (most folders also have folder.png). Each individual track is also tagged with art courtesy of MP3Tag, SC is correctly pointed to the folder in which all the albums (folders of flacs) reside. Currently 412 folders of very fine tunes, headed for 500 this summer. XP is latest update SP2, SC 7.0, Firefox 2.0, Zone Alarm and McAfee on but program control in ZA is off. Memory to spare, a 3G Pentium 4 with a gig of RAM to play with, SB and Firefox rarely get a third of the way to the edge of the system envelope when both are running (though Squeezecenter can be a Java hog when running). Tunes are on a very zippy Iomega Ego 250 Gig USB on a fast port, flacs stream flawlessly. Strangely, setting the thumbs to 50 took a full two minutes to load! With thumbs set to 300 pixels (closer to the average folder.jpg image size), it took a mere 40 seconds. Folder.jpg pixel size may vary from flac folder to folder, depending on where MP3Tag found the art, so resampling could be part of the problem. Though it seems as if rescan should create a master thumbs.db of some sort that enables a faster load regardless of image size or location. Tried Explorer also, but same slow load as Firefox. Changing thumbs to 300 and albums per page to 100, however, cut the load to 12 seconds - but it sure was nice to be able to flip through them all without paging. -- Fleury Fleury's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9783 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46708 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] SC 7.0 on Ubuntu can't locate iTunes music folder on external USB drive
Hello, (Apologies for the dual post, also in the Unix/Linux forum) I'm currently in the throes of moving from XP to Linux (Ubuntu 7.10 and soon 8.04) and have got most of my core requirements nicely in hand (XP VPN virtual machines running under VirtualBox etc.). At the moment I'm dual booting XP and Ubuntu, and one of my final tests has been to get SC7 running on Ubuntu (I've had and loved my SB3 for nigh on 2 years) which I thought would be a relative stroll... All of my music is stored on an external USB drive which the XP version of SC has no problem in finding and scanning. I've successfully installed SC7 on Ubuntu but when I try to navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive (/media/FREECOM_EXT/iTunes/ which is totally accessible/browsable within Ubuntu) it just doesn't appear when trying to browse to the iTunes Music Folder within SqueezeCenter settings. All I get under /media is CDROM entries. This is totally cracking me up! I'm guessing I might have to mount the external USB drive so that SC can see it but being a bit of a Linux n00b I couldn't be sure... Any help would be enormously appreciated as this is essentially the last obstacle to my complete abandonment of Windows on my home system... Apologies for the long post... It's not an option at this time. The controller software is a new and distinct api, so some features from SC had to be left out in order to get the important stuff working. I've had the same issue, rbl, since I switched to SC7. I also had a problem with one player starting 3-4 seconds after the other. Never had these problems with 6.x. I switched back to the Classic skin, which seemed to help for awhile. Problems started again a week or so ago, so I switched all players to start as a group. Things seem to be working fine right now, so I think I'll try going back to the Default skin and see if the problem recurs. -- GeeJay GeeJay's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11388 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46722 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Shrinking Playlists
I have SqueezeCenter 7.01 (4-23 nightly) running on a Windows Home Server with 4 sb2/3 players and a duet controller. My problem is that my playlists shrink after each access. What I mean by this is if I have a playlist called ROCK and I have Song1 Song2 and Song3 in the list, and if I start playing the playlist and then pause during Song1 or move to another playlist for a a while, when I navigate back to this playlist it now only shows Song2 and Song3. If I then play this newly abbreviated list and let Song2 and Song3 play to completion, now my playlist appears empty. Essentially, once a song is accessed by the playlist it disappears (the file is still on the server and the playlist text file still is complete, but none of this shows on the playlist display either on the SB2/3 or the duet controller). The only way to restore the playlist is to delete and rescan the library and playlists. Re: [slim] How to get faster album art load in web gui?
Album thumbnails are precached when you run a full clear/rescan. If you change the thumbnail size after the last full clear/scan then the new size won't be in the cache and will be generated at page generation time. Subsequent page requests will use the cached images. One thing that still sucks is that if your images are not square - say 300x298 pixels, then the server will generate the thumbnail as a PNG that may be several times _larger_ than the original file in bytes. That will hopefully be fixed soon. If it's enabled, disable the option Settings Interface Show Artist with Albums. That's where the biggest slowdown in browsing album pages lies. -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46708 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
