Sometimes toslink cables come with little plastic protectors on each
end, which have to be removed.

[slim] Possible fix for "Delayed Write Failed"

2008-07-09 Thread mswlogo

Since many of us use external USB drives on windows XP I'm sure there
are some of you that have seen this error.

I've searched and tried many things and it still failed.

There are many reasons that can cause this but I think a common one,
was what I ran into and finally fixed.

The problem is most folks set their drive spin down time less than
their hibernate or standby time. The problem with this is, when the
computer goes to standby or hibernate the drive needs to be spun up to
do some house keeping. The USB drives can spin up rather slow and might
not have as tight a hand shake as an internal IDE drive (which this
problem rarely happens on).

So all I did was set the drive spin down time to be greater than the
hibernate time. I could of also set never. It's just a habit to set
drives and monitor to be less than standby / hibernate. In reality the
drive will normally always spin when actively serving squeeze center.
Having it spin down a little sooner than hibernate served little
purpose.

Also when the system restores from standby or hibernate the last state
for the drive is a spinning state.

Well any ways this trivial change seemed to fix it.

This seems so much simpler than playing with drivers, cache sizes and
hotfixes. You'll also see "hibernate" often refernced with the
problem.

My WOL (Wake On Lan) server is finally 100% solid.

I was just thinking of the VU on cassette recordings where you were
supposed to keep the recording level below zero for minimum distortion.

I realise that the digital recording level is something quite different

Yes, for normal ppl the amp switch is instantaneous, but we use a tube
amp that takes longer to warm up :-)

The second sentence in my reply should have been part of the first
paragraph, which assumes the server will be on any time someone is
there to press the power button on squeezebox's remote (which never
gets used in lieu of the web interface by the SO BTW).

This sounds like a corner case that was never tested. I suspect 95% or
more users of SD products have slimserver installed, even if they use
SC a lot. And of the 5% that use SC exclusively, how many use static
IP addresses.

An interesting bug with an interesting solution.

Re: [slim] Forget player/Reset player?

2008-07-09 Thread maggior

This would be handy for playing remote streams.

I use this all of the time and noticed that with 7.0, SC will
disconnect the stream shortly after playing has completed. This
results in "winamp" being removed from the player list. If I'm not
paying attention, I then end up adding music to the play list of
another player, potentially hijacking a playlist my kids may be
listening to at home. (It's a surprise when Raffi is interrupted by
Porcupine Tree or Miles Davis. It's funny at first, but gets old).

The way I work around this is I hit play again, which reactivates the
stream by playing the last-played song again. While this is playing, I
browse what I'd like to play next and press play.

The other day, the last song played in the playlist was very short - 15
sec. or so. This method wouldn't work. Eventually I realized that I
could pause the stream and follow my same work-around.

The best thing would be that this didn't happen where the player
disappears from the player list because the playlist is done.
Alternatively, if I could tell it to forget the player and restart with
another stream, I could avoid the issue with the short file.

I didn't mean to imply it needs a dedicated server but rather a computer that,
as far as the SB is concerned, is a server that is there when it's needed. My
point was that turning on the SB should not ever be followed by the
realization that the server is not running since the illusion of an audio
appliance is then gone.

That's where I disagree. Turning on the amp, for example, is instantaneous.
Turning on a PC-based computer is like 20-30 seconds minimum, as well as being
an extra thing to turn on.

[slim] Why would SB2 start disconnecting all of a sudden?

2008-07-09 Thread 808htfan

I've been using my SB2 happily for a while now and all of a sudden it
keeps disconnecting from both Squeezecenter/Squeezenetwork. I
repeatedly have to go through the network setup (without making any
changes) to reconnect. Looking at the 'Current Settings', everything
looks correct...MAC, IP, SSID, etc all look right. I noticed one thing
I never noticed before, when connected to SC the SB's IP shows up as the
one given by my router (using Static DHCP) but when connected to SN it
shows up as my router's external IP. Don't know if that's new or has
always been the case.

Also no changes have been made anywhere, router config, nothing.

What's going on?

half way then just sits there loose not really clipped in if you know
what I mean. This is my first optical cable so not sure as to what to

A dedicated server may be ideal for some, but I personally don't see
the need to maintain a separate box when my desktop is on _all_ of the
time someone is home, and a lot of the time nobody is home as well.

If Squeezecenter is set to run as a service on the 'family' desktop,
then it's only one extra power button to push if the server is off.

My GF and I are self-professed freepacman.org addicts, which combined
with one of us being a SD forum addict and the other a myspace addict
pretty much ensures that the server's power button will always be
pushed before the power button of the Sb remote.

The way I got the better half to start using SB3 was I bought a Harmony
1000 and now it is a one button operation for her to listen to music
(even if the TV is already on). All she now has to do is tap "Digital
Music" and the Receiver comes on switched to the SB3 input and the SB3
comes on (and anything else not needed that is on goes off). She picks
her playlist or goes random and is on her way. She has even started
using the Controller to make changes. I came home the other day and she
had the dinner party background music playlist already running for the
quests we were having over.

Make it easy to use, show then how easy it can be, and people start
using it. With as many devices as you have, I would have a full time
music server running SC and never turn it off. Then it is always ready
to use for her.

Lastly, I personally don't believe you can complain about anything.
After all, she let you buy a Transporter that she does not understand
or care to use. It would be hard for me to find any fault with anybody
that would allow that. My better half took almost 10 years before there
was any difference in a Sony Boombox and my main system. She thought it
was wasted money IE music is music. I told her sound is one thing,
reproduced music was a whole other game. She now can't stand listening
to her friends rack system when we visit. Some things just take time.

On the squeezebox, Rhapsody is available via squeezenetwork, so you
don't have to have the PC's on. Though, in that case, you may have to
leave it connected to SN when you turn it off for usability.

My wife enjoys the SB and uses it all of the time - mainly to play
music for the kids. She even knows how to shuffle! She likes it
because is alleviates the clutter of CDs sitting around. I love it
because I don't have to go to the basement to pick a musical selection
from my CD collection.

Other posters have good suggestions - modify the menu to simplify it
and put Rhapsody on top.

If fear of messing up the PCs or network by pressing the incorrect
buttons is an issue, reassure her as best you can that she can't do any
irrevocable damage to the unit or network.

Good luck!

Exactly. I don't have a problem doing all the setup stuff on the computer to
/configure/ a Squeezebox but if it does not then become a transparent audio
appliance that can be controlled solely by its remote then it's a waste of
time (literally) - you might as well just use Winamp and connect the
computer's audio to your amp.

If you have to do anything other than pressing the power button on the SB's
remote then you may have missed the point of the product. Surely having a
Squeezbox /requires/ an always-on server. Even wake-on-LAN would cause
unaceptable start delays. Spinning up a sleeping hard drive is just at the
limit of what I consider acceptable for my setup.

For the OP:

You are an enthusiast, she's not. If she doesn't tell you to turn it
off when you listen, and if she doesn't complain about what you buy
when you buy it, I don't see how there's any problem here. You're happy
and she's happy, no reason to expect your SO to have the same hobbies or
interests you have. So long as you can do what you want, you're where
you want to be. You each have a different way to listen to what you
like, and so be it.

It's about the same in my house. On a related matter, I love going to
live music. My wife never pays any attention to any of the venue
schedules. Yet, if I find a show I want to go to, she's always ready
to go and seems to enjoy them as much as I do. I've missed shows I
would have wanted to go to, in cases when she has seen the announcement
and I missed it, and she didn't mention anything to me about it. It just
usually doesn't occur to her to check schedules and get tickets. I'm ok
with that, music seems to be more my hobby than hers, but she likes it
too.

I have some advice: go into Squeezecenter player settings and simplify
the menus. Get rid of stuff you don't use. Make it as simple as
possible and I'll bet she'll use it. If she only uses Rhapsody, put
Rhapsody on the top menu (I think you can do that). Heck, you could
even set a seldom used remote button to call up Rhapsody.

All this worked for me. My wife hates gadgets and she loves the

My wife *hates* pink. :-)

She never seemed to bother using the SB3, and was happy to wait for me
to turn it on, though in part this is because she's not as bothered as
I am about having music on most of the time. But I was pleased when I
came home one day to find her using the Duet in the kitchen. She'd
turned the whole lot on from cold - server, network, receiver,
controller - and figured out what to do, without any manuals or
instructions from me.

I'm not surprised that she figured it out (she is an
analyst/programmer, after all), but that she *bothered* to. Usually,
she'd just plug her iPod in (as I used to, before the Duet arrived).

Re: [slim] Forget player/Reset player?

2008-07-09 Thread aubuti

The "forget player" option has been removed in SC7. You can try a
factory reset of the SB3. I don't remember exactly, but I think the
magic incantation is to (a) power off the SB3, then (b) hold down the
"+" key on the remote while powering on. If that's not it, check the
wiki or search the forums.

I'm using Sophos. Never had any problems... well, except that its
updates sometimes slow the machine down a bit when I'm trying to use it
for compute-intensive stuff.

I recall reading that AV s/w should be configured to ignore certain
kinds of files that SqueezeCenter uses (I forget the details), and I
did this, but doubt that it was really needed.

Re: [slim] Scaled Down VU meter

2008-07-09 Thread Eric Seaberg

The VU balistics are very close to a real 'average' reading meter. What
you're seeing is quite accurate, since that's how LOUD everyone is
mastering CDs now. What you want is a PEAK meter, which is not the
same.

Just because the VUs sit above '0' doesn't mean there's distortion...
although there is in most cases... but that's a different post in a
different forum. ;-)

Re: [slim] WAF ( wife acceptance factor ) I don't get it

2008-07-09 Thread CatBus

Here's how to translate SlimDevices geek joy into layman's terms:

It's a networked music player! Translation: If the network's not up,
the device is completely useless.

You can control it from your web browser! Translation: Ignore this, you
can still use a remote.

So for maximum acceptance, leave the computer on and show them how to
use the remote. After this, it should be no more hassle to use an SB3
than the Sansa player. They don't want to mess with a computer every
time they want to listen to music, and I personally agree with that
sentiment 100%.

[slim] WAF ( wife acceptance factor ) I don't get it

2008-07-09 Thread pc4ever1

My wife just bought a portable dock station for her Sansa Rhapsody
player. At times I use Rhapsody as well on my SD equipment. I have two
SB3's , a Duet and Transporter wirelessly networked throughout the
house. She says she doesn't want to play around with the SD player and
turning on PC's, instead she just wants to listen to music. I have
showed her Squeezenetwork and using Rhapsody within it as well. Yet she
still feels imtimidated , has anyone else encountered this with their
wives, girlfriends etc.

If so, I wonder what SD/Logitech needs to do to turn their equipment
from geekware to mainstream. I'm guessing an instant on /play mode
would help here.

BTW... I love all the pieces of SD equipment that I own. Having spent
countless hours of enjoyment on these players I'll never let them go.

Re: [slim] Static IP address problem

2008-07-09 Thread opchiasm

Turning off DHCP on the router did not seem to work ...

What did seem to work (for reasons that I can't figure out) was
starting SlimServer. I never run SlimServer - I always use

configure the new Squeezebox and was able to assign a static IP
address. I then just switched to SqueezeNetwork after the device
initially connected to SlimServer.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

[slim] Scaled Down VU meter

2008-07-09 Thread gusi

Hello,

I recently put the VU meter up as a screen saver. I find though that
most digital music is recorder 'really loud' and so the VU sits mostly
above 0 in what used to be the distortion zone. Somehow that just feels
really wrong.

Is there a version of the VU screen saver that has 100% volume sit at 0
or perhaps just past zero on the VU scale?

How about 'forcing' DISCNUMBER tag (through mp3tag) on mp3 files. That
works for me as long as the album is not a (SC recognized) compilation.
So, in the:

-directory structure:
/Pink Floyd/The Wall (CD1)/
/Pink Floyd/The Wall (CD2)/

-All tracks tagged with ALBUM=The Wall, ARTIST=Pink Floyd
-tracks from CD1 tagged with DISCNUMBER=1
-tracks from CD2 tagged with DISCNUMBER=2
-setting to treat multi disc as a single album checked

This works fine (for both mp3 and flac files) - The Wall shows only
once in the album list that is.

The problem, is when album is a compilation (as detected by SC). It
gets into the Various Artists, but gets listed as many times as there
are directories containing it (so in case of Best of Blues, it shows 5
times - and album art is displayed only for the directory containing
folder.jpg)

Then you will need to set the TPOS field on the mp3's.

Think of it this way: if you have two tracks in different directories,
how will SC know that these are two tracks from the same album, as
opposed to two tracks from albums with the same name?

It used to be (before 6.5 I believe) that you had to give SC a list of
"Common Album Titles" which didnt work all that well (ie, you had to
tell it 'Best of', 'Greatest Hits', 'Acoustic', 'MTV', etc). Now it
uses the "they are in different directories, so they must be different
albums" as a clue. This breaks when you have multidisc sets in
different directories... so the override for that is to use TPOS to say
"this is disc 1, that one is disc 2... same album just different
directories."

I trust metaflac to tell me exactly what's in the file, no more no
less. Things like mp3tag have a habit of normalising tag names,
changing capitalization, etc which is nice for day to day usage but
makes them less useful for this kind of investigation. Just "metaflac
--list foo.flac" should do it.

Re: [slim] Getting Last.fm to Work

2008-07-09 Thread charlesr

Thanks, but I've already authorised squeezenetwork in the Last.fm
settings (the squeeze logo has appeared in last.fm so should be
working). I'm able to listen to my last.fm channels via squeezenetwork,
but there's no option in squeezecenter. I've checked the items available
for adding to the menu too and there's no mention in there of last.fm
either (apart from the last.fm audioscrobbler, which is working fine).

The only items that appear in my music services folder are mp3tunes and
Live music archive (pandora doesn't work in the UK so I presume that's
why that's disappeared). It's not in Extras either.

I've tried restarting the service in case that helped too.

2008-07-09 Thread gojensen

Thanks, that was wrong ... haven't been paying much attention to the
squeezenetwork.com thing really. I can see Pandora in the
squeezenetwork site again...

I also downgraded my SC to 7.0, this gave me the Pandora (and rest)
options in the menus again.

However, when I try to play Pandora via the SB3 now I see all my
channels but when I press play it says "403 Request for blocked URL"
which I find odd. Pandora works just fine from my desktop computer.

Any ideas where to debug further?

(I guess this should be in the squeezenetwork forum by now...)

Although, in theory, I don't need anti-virus software on my Mac, I

Re: [slim] Controller Wireless Reception

2008-07-09 Thread bpa

Laptop usually have their antenna in the screen which is vertical when
in use. SBR antenna will be smaller but also is normally horizontal.

This means the router antenna being vertical - the signal field will be
"seen" by laptop better than SBR. Try putting SBR on its side and change
orientation to see if there are differences in signal quality.

Try placing the router closer to ceiling as this will also ensure
signal will not encounter as much furniture etc compared to a router at
or near ground level.

I also have problems with where broadband enters house so I used
Homeplug from modem to router to enable the wireless router to be
placed more central.

Have you authorised your SB to use Last.fm? You need to do this via
Squeezenetwork (one time only) by logging into the Squeezenetwork
webui, from memory it's something like Accounts, Last.fm, then enter
your Last.fm details and authorise your account by following the link.

Thereafter (possibly with a reboot of your Squeezecenter system) you
should see Last.fm under Extras in Squeezecenter.

Re: [slim] Controller Wireless Reception

2008-07-09 Thread miguelk

I am in a fairly large apartment. My router is at the opposite end of
the apt from where the Squeezebox is located. Laptops work fine in the
same location, and the Squeezebox itself would get about a 50% signal if
set to the default power setting. At 50%, I experienced a fair number
of dropouts, and the controller barely worked at all. BTW, Logitech
replaced my controller, so in theory I am using one without any
hardware issue.

Of course, for the amount of $ I've spent on routers and various
non-functional range extenders, I could have had the place wired.

Can we get a better understanding of the layout of the building in
which you are having issues, along with the location of the access
point and the materials from which the building is constructed.

At what distance does the controller drop out? How many walls? Do you
have a laptop that works reliably at the same distance / place?

Re: [slim] Best practices: SqueezeCenter (flac) to iPod

2008-07-09 Thread cooppw02

For Linux users, I've found MP3FS to be a very elegant solution to this
problem. You point MP3FS at a directory full of FLACs, and it creates
a virtual directory full of MP3s. Only the MP3s don't exist anywhere
on a disk, but are transcoded on-the-fly from the FLACs.

Only downside to this approach is that it's pretty resource-intensive
operation.

"Tune in on your Squeezebox: Go to Music Services > Last.fm to find
your personalized radio stations".

I've just installed 7.1, but that option is not there in my music
services. It says it's only for UK,US and Germany. I'm in the UK.

Any ideas? Or is this only within Squeezenetwork?

Actually it's more like $8.50 as UK gallons are bigger than US ones!

Hi Opchiasm,

You will have to temporarily turn off DHCP in order to get the option
to statically address the receiver when setting it up.

Have a great day,

Re: [slim] How to Remove Scratches on SB3?

Having recently purchased a Sony iPod Clock Radio, I discovered that it
had an audio-in port. I had unplugged my SB3 in the living-room so that
I could connect it to said audio-in port to check that it would work
(the intention being to purchase a Duet receiver, controlled via iPod
Touch/iPeng).

In moving the SB3 I caused surface scratching on the display panel.
Having tried to eradicate the surface scratching has made it worse.
Shame on me!

Re: [slim] Best practices: SqueezeCenter (flac) to iPod

2008-07-09 Thread trotsky10

I use foobar with columnsGUI plugin to give a itunes like interface and
the ipod plugin to convert from flac to mp3 on the fly.

Main reason I never changed to media monkey is that you have to pay for
flac compatibility (at least you used to) wheareas foobar is free though
you have to configure it to get it running how you want it.
