I have to admit that these seem like bizarre comments to me:

(1) Battery life: the SB3 remote runs through a set of batteries like
once every two years or so? Hardly qualifies as always issues.

(2) Robustness: I drop mine all the time and the worst thing that
happens is the batteries fly out. Again, hardly a problem. If you run
over it with your car, you can always order another one, which brings me
to...

(3) You can control your SB from any computer with internet access.
This includes an iPhone, PDA, laptop, etc. You can also use a
universal remote, or a JVC remote. Frankly, you can use pretty much
any remote you want (with a little extra effort because you would have
to write down the codes).

These are non-issues IMO. The SB is much more flexible in this regard
than any other piece of electronics I own.

The problem: I just bought an Audioengine W1 setup to stream audio
from the receiver to the A5s. It works great with over-the-air radio,
but when I try to use the Duet at the same time, it can't connect to
the PC or if it does connect, it drops frequently.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a workaround?

You'll want to limit the use of wireless. So wire either your Duet to
your HTPC/switch or your speakers to the Receiver.

Wireless is a bad idea in general. It's just so darn convenient. Avoid
it where you can. ;)

Audiophiles are a strange bunch. One of the great things about network
players is that you don't have to keep going to the device to change
the media (cds). You'd think it it would not take long to cotton on
that a remote would be pretty useful in this scenario.

I think the buttons and knobs cause the most damage to general
reputation of the Transporter and I can't believe that many people at
all use them on a regular basis.

I'm sure that their inclusion was an error (much like the omission of a
usable headphone socket for the Boom).

I suggest you spend some time looking up the old threads discussing the
wish list for future products around the time that the Transporter was
in development (go back as much as one year from it's release date).
You'll see that this was very much NOT an error, as much as simply
not a device made specifically for you.

btw...the headphone jack placement is also getting to be an old gripe.
Let other people take it up if needed, but you have said your peace and

The transporter is totally overengineered. The front panel is useless
for most , the double display is not of any great use.
The price break tween a TP and a SB is rediculous. The TP coulda had
the better dac and all the features of the TP for far far less. To pay
huge amounts extra for aesthetics , knobs , thick front panel and silly
handles is rediculous. I'm an audiophile , and like most of em , the
prime concern is the sound of a unit, and thr TP is lacking imho in
terms of its sonic sig with its DAC. It sounds cold , clinical and
lifeless.
In the interim , im on my 3rd TP , the first ones knob was broken and
the 2nd ones display died on me...so much for adding extra parts.

I wonder if it might be possible to copy the MusicInfoScreensaver plugin a few

Yep, the controller shows in SC and in SqueezeNetwork as a seperate

all the settings just like any other device (screensaver, background,

It was my understanding since the beginning that Logitech intended to

It's a blast. I ran it yesterday for 2.5 hours and the battery still

[slim] Don't scan a folder

Is it possible to get squeezecenter not to scan a directory (or folder)

e.g is there a feature that if the scanner sees a certain file it will
ignore that directory ?

I have all my music in a folder called Music, and there are 2
subdirectories, Lossless and Mp3.
--Music
|
---Lossless
|
---Mp3

I have lots of old mp3s, but am now doing everything new in flac, and
if I want to transfer this to my ipod, I convert the flacs into mp3.

So I have some albums under both Lossless, and mp3 .. and the
squeezecenter scans both, and hence duplicates the entries.

How can I get around this ? (whilst keeping all my music in 1 place)

I've created an mp3 so I can listen to it on my ipod, it has then
created a duplicate entry on the squeezebox, as it has indexed both mp3

I wondered if there was a way to stop that on a folder by folder basis

e.g create a file called .dontscan or somethign similar.

- Don't scan anything under this folder

Wouldn't that be handy?

Re: [slim] Don't scan a folder

2008-10-20 Thread mjb152

I can definitely see a case for it, I wondered if the developers read
these forums to get upgrade ideas ?

I checked the source code, and there is a module called Scanner.pm
which would need modifying, probably the sub scanDirectory part.

For a very basic start it could simply check to see if that files
exists or not, and if it does then do nothing with that subdirectory.

if I get time, I'll write the code to do it, add it here and then we
can either manually add it to our configs, or ask for a feature adding
?

Re: [slim] Don't scan a folder

2008-10-20 Thread Themis

mjb152;351465 Wrote:
thanks for the quick reply, but I'm not sure it helps. Think my
 description was a bit vague.

I'd like to be able to keep all my music under 1 folder, and I'd like
the squeezebox to be able to play both flacs and mp3s (which it does
very well). The problem is that for where I have a flac only file, and
I've created an mp3 so I can listen to it on my ipod, it has then
created a duplicate entry on the squeezebox, as it has indexed both mp3
 and flac seperately.

I wondered if there was a way to stop that on a folder by folder basis
 ?
e.g create a file called .dontscan or somethign similar.

You need a structure of this kind:

Music
-/Lossless
-/Lossless/FLAC
-/Lossy
-/Lossy/MP3fromFLAC
-/Lossy/MP3
SC
-/SC/main

Then, you put:
all flacs in /Lossless/FLAC
all files converted from FLAC in /Lossy/MP3fromFLAC
all MP3 originals (not from flacs) in /Lossy/MP3

For your iPod:
you'll have to import /Lossy directory

For your Squeeze Center:
you create two shorcuts in /SC/main directory:
one to /Lossless/FLAC
one to /Lossy/MP3
you change the Squeeze Center music library directory to /SC/main

Hope this helps.

Re: [slim] Minumim Wireless strength for synching SB3s

Run network test and see if you can push 1 Mbit/s reliably - that allows
you to stream pretty much everything. Anything less than that you'll
probably be limited to compressed songs (but 256 or 320k sound pretty
good :-)

I have a remote Boom in a location where it gets about 45% signal (G)
and it can still play FLAC, provided I don't turn the microwave. :-) In
the latter case, Squeezenetwork still works, though.

course help with the speed etc issues and still allow the use of

[slim] Scanner.pm and scanner.exe in windows

2008-10-20 Thread mjb152

Hi,

On the windows release I can see a Scanner.pm module and also a
scanner.exe file in the Server directory.

Is scanner.exe a compiled version of scanner.pl for windows ?

The reason I ask is that I'd like to make a change to Scanner.pm, but
at the moment I can't see that change reflected if I stop/start
slimserver.

Is that because I am editing the source files and should recompile
scanner.pl?

Apologies if this is a silly question.

Re: [slim] Scanner.pm and scanner.exe in windows

2008-10-20 Thread kdf

The exe is indeed a compiled version of the pl file, also including the
required other modules.

For windows, you either need the Perl Dev kit to compile changes.
Otherwise, you can download ActivePerl from activestate.com. This
gives you the ability to run the .pl files directly. This also means
you get to see the effects of your changes without having to pay for
the dev kit.

I'd say change your wireless channel on your router, but... The real

Re: [slim] MusicIP headless and moods

2008-10-20 Thread Siduhe

Are you running on Windows by any chance?

If so, I think the problem is caused by the fact that the Moods
directory (in Windows) has moved from c:/Program Files/MusicIP to
C:/Documents and Settings/[Username]/Application Data[hidden
folder]/MusicIP.

Squeezecenter is only looking in the Program Files location at the
moment. I will file a bug.

Quick workaround is to copy the entire Moods folder from the MusicIP
prefs folder in Documents and Settings (you will need to unhide the
Application Data folder) to C:/Program Files/MusicIP. Then stop/start
Squeezecenter and moods will be available. You will need to recopy
every time you update.

There's a preference ignoreDirRE which isn't exposed in the UI. It's a
regular expression which defines file/folder names which are to be ignored. A
plugin could simply expose that value to the user.

See Slim/Utils/Misc.pm, around line 697:

if ((my $ignore = $prefs-get('ignoreDirRE') || '') ne '') {

I definitely want a SB car radio! I've brought it up in other threads.

If data networks were reliable, all I would need is the ability to play

what to play.

However, since data networks are not reliable for now, I also want the

[slim] squeezecenter with more than one hard disk

2008-10-20 Thread jmschnur

I have a very large CD library. Is it possible ot have squeeze center
7.2 scan and use more than one hard disk (directory) at the same time
and then have my squeezebox acess the entire directory under XP or
Vista?

If so how do I do this?

[slim] Compacting Squeezecenter display

2008-10-20 Thread regalma1

I just set up an Asus eee as my server. This has a 7 display. I loaded
it with SqueezeCenter. I have been using Slimserver. SqueezeCenter
seems decent enough but it is a display space hog compared to
Slimserver. In particular I don't the way it insists on creating space
for artwork. I really would like to be able to compact songs titles,
album titles down to a single line of text like in Slimserver. With
only a 7 display this is would much better.

Does anyone know how to concentrate more information on the screen?

Re: [slim] Custom artwork for internet streams?

2008-10-20 Thread vrobin

@mherger: Reading this thread, it seems to me that this StreamUrl was
related to shoutcast metadata, but there was a doubt in your message.
No there is no doubt anymore :).

@andyg: Talking about radio paradise, you write: provide an XML
metadata file that can be queried on each track change. Do you mean
that some sort of event is sent by the server when the track change? If
it's what you mean, is it true for every station? I thought that most
basic old school internet radio was just an endless mp3 streamed
through http with an header at the beginning and data without
interruption.

Anyway, if you're planning to add support for metadata information for
radio through XML, I'll be glad to here about it with more details. Not
that I have much time to spend on it, but I'll be glad to convert my
quick and dirty not really a plugin code to something cleaner.

Many radios (at least all the ones I'm listening to) don't support any
kind of metadata. They just rely on old school web broadcasting company
that record the radio stream and broadcast it through http without any
value added (at least that's how it is in france!). It's just a web
pipe for the radio.

At the same time, all these radios I'm listening to provide web
interface with song title, album title, artist name, url to album
cover, year of release. Sometimes, this data is not available (at night
for example) and it's interesting to fallback cover with the radio
logo.

It would be interesting to add some sort of plugin hook for a plugin
that would register a stream url / or an url mask and that would return
a properly set xml data when asked for song/stream information.

There is some web metadata url (very basic informations):

Re: [slim] Custom artwork for internet streams?

2008-10-20 Thread andyg

Please read up on the Icy metadata protocol if you don't understand how
MP3 streaming works.

The officially supported version of this will work for stations that
support it. WMA stations can also send metadata but there is no
defined standard for how it should be formatted. I will be adding at
least one official metadata module for a set of WMA stations in Italy
that I have documentation for.

The code developed for this will include the necessary hooks for your
plugin to add other, more ugly, screen-scraping types of metadata
modules. I think there is already a bug open for that. Stay tuned.

I simply think that trying to regulate and restrict the free flow of
digital information is a losing proposition. I buy digital downloads of

But the purchasing of music is just one way of acquiring music these

In which case, I can think of a lot more laws that we should repeal.

Re: [slim] Just curious: when/why did you get your first Slim/Logitech player?

2008-10-20 Thread atrocity

A couple years ago, I found out about the Roku Soundbridge and snagged
one. I wasn't looking for a way to serve my own music, but for a way
to listen to Internet radio through the real stereo without having to
connect a computer. I loved it so much that I bought another one just
for the bedroom.

After a while, I decided to try running its server software to play
back some of my live music downloads, most of which were (and still
are) FLAC. I wasn't so impressed...sound quality was OK, but the lack
of true gapless playback really annoyed me. It also bothered me that
the forced resampling to 48k destroyed DTS. Still, I loved the little
boxes for the radio capability and still think that they're a good deal
if that's your primary focus.

After a while I heard about the Squeezebox and, when a friend asked
what he should get, I told him that I liked the Roku well enough, but
that it looked like the Squeezebox was better. So he bought one and
began raving about it, which in turn got me to give in and buy
one...and then another. I gave away one of the Rokus and still use the
other in another room.

The downside to the Squeezebox is that I suddenly got obsessed with
getting all of my live, rare stuff (CD-DA, FLAC, SHN) onto a server.
So I had to spend big bucks for a NAS and am still working on getting
all the music onto it. I'm also loading up a few normal (i.e.,
official/mainstream) CDs, but my collection has got to be in the 2,500
range, so I'm definitely not making the same effort to convert
everything.

I love that I can listen to downloads without all the annoyance and
unpleasant additional sounds or interrutions that can happen when
trying to listen through the computer. I also appreciate that
SqueezeCenter runs nicely on a cheap Ubuntu box, so I can have my
Windows machine do all its normal Windowsy stupidity without
interrrupting the music.

[slim] Q about putting SC on its own Static IP?

2008-10-20 Thread lanierb

Right now all the devices in my house, including my SC machine and all
my SB's, are hooked up to one router. This router is hooked into my
DSL modem with a static IP.

For reasons unrelated to my SB/SC stuff, I'm thinking about changing
things by putting a hub into the DSL modem, and then hooking my SC
machine into the hub and giving it its own static IP, (with my various
SB's still hooked up to the router, which would still have a static IP
and be hooked into the same hub).

Here's my question: with the router hooked to the same hub as the SC
machine, would my SB network traffic (from streaming music) stay inside
my house and off my DSL connection (routing just through the hub) or
would it necessarily head out onto my DSL connection subnet?
Obviously, I need to avoid the latter situation.

Thanks!

A hub (or more likely, you'd be installing a switch) doesn't do routing,
so the Squeezebox would be still be on the same subnet, just as if you'd
plugged it into the router itself. (If the router has multiple ethernet
ports, that in itself is a switch.) Whether the server has a static IP
address or one assigned via DHCP also makes no difference.

What determines whether or not any of the PCs or devices on the LAN

I don't want to see the RIAA taking aim at manufacturers of network

if I do that, does that mean my SB traffic goes across the entire DSL

there any way to stop that and still have my server outside the router
or is my only option to put the server behind a router?

Hi Leo,

She sounds like straight down the middle alternative to me. She
seemed ok, nothing special. Not a style I'm personally interested in.

I don't think Patti Smith or Stevie Nicks are considered to be folk
singers, and I think they equally do not consider themselves to be as
such. I would not describe Laura's songs on the page you linked as
folk music.

Re: [slim] Q about putting SC on its own Static IP?

I'm not sure if I'm not understanding or you're not. I want to move the
server so it is no longer behind ANY router. You can't do this with
most DSL connections, but with mine you can. It would definitely be
visible to the internet. That's the point. What I'm wondering is, if
I do that, does that mean my SB traffic goes across the entire DSL
subnet too (and over my DSL line, which I don't want)? Also, if so, is
there any way to stop that and still have my server outside the router
or is my only option to put the server behind a router?

You're talking about putting the server _outside_ of your
firewall/router? Are you sure you could make that work? Most people
don't have multiple public IP addresses given to them by by their ISP.

You're worried about the route that traffic would take between to your
server and your internal clients, like SBs and a web browser. It
shouldn't have to travel across the Internet if the routing is
correctly configured.

You'd be much better off placing the server behind the router and using
port forwarding to allow outside traffic to contact the server. That
may be difficult to make secure, but it's infinitely more secure than
leaving the server on the outside of your router. If your router isn't
capable of doing this then you might want to invest in a firewall/router
that can. A nice little unit for about $150 is the Zyxel ZyWALL 2
Plus:

http://www.yesmicro.com/Item.aspx?sku=71286DTD

For implementing security, it depends on what you want to accomplish.
With the ZyWALL you can open the ports and allow connections from only
a single IP address (or a subnet or even an address range). Say to
permit yourself to connect to the server from work. You could also use
a VPN tunnel through the firewall, which might give you more flexibility
to connect from different locations.

Re: [slim] Controller or not

2008-10-20 Thread peterw

erland;350133 Wrote:
Basically you can do any modifications you like for your personal use
but you can't redistribute them beside sending them privately to
Logitech for inclusion in a future release.

And if Logitech asks you for your modifications, you must hand them
over, and grant Logitech a broad range of intellectual property rights
to your personal changes, including license to sell your work to
others.

The main limitation with this in my opinion is:
 - You can't port SqueezePlay to third party hardware and redistribute
it without permissions from Logitech. This kind of make sense since
Logitech really only earn money on the hardware, so it isn't strange
that they like to avoid competitors making money on their free
 software.

 ...

When you think about it, the licensing is pretty logical.

Logitech *could* modify the license to allow public discourse code
sharing while disallowing binary distribution for non-Logitech hardware
and distribution of source code changes derivatives designed to allow
the software to run on non-Logitech hardware. I don't know why they
don't do that, as it'd give them plenty of leverage against both
corporate hardware competitors and hobbyist leaching (unwanted iPhone,
iPod Touch, and Windows Mobile ports). I imagine they may see this as a
support issue -- they may fear taking support requests from customers
running 3rd-party Controller firmware, and have decided that a slower,
more expensive development process for the Controller is worth the
expected support savings of not having to first ask users if they're
running the official firmware (and to deny support to those who
aren't).

I should note that Logitech has begun to publish more information on
the applet APIs (for those who're content with the underlying
software), and has even re-released some Lua sample applet code to the
public domain! So they seem serious about wanting 3rd party applets,
even as they maintain a tight grip on their core Lua code.

Most parts of SqueezeCenter is GPL but it can't be used with third party
hardware players anyway so there is no reason to restricting the
license. SqueezePlay would be possible to use with third party hardware
similar to Controller, so restricting the license makes sense from a
 business point of view.

SqueezeCenter is very usable with non-Logitech hardware. For more than
a year, I used a Hauppauge video client that I bought new for $40 USD
to play my music thanks to Slimp3 emulation software. Roku used to
advertise SlimServer support as a feature of their networked music
players.

It'll be interesting to see if projects like Moose and iPeng will make
common devices like the iPod Touch and iPhone/Windows Mobile/Android
handsets viable challengers to the Controller. I think there's a real
risk that the SqueezePlay license will stifle Controller improvements
and make those other devices more attractive to carry, costing them
some sales. I personally carry a wifi-equipped PDA around most of the
time, but still reach for the Controller because it's so much easier to
use. If there were a really nice interface for my PDA, I might never use
my Controller.

Yeah, my ISP gives me 8 public static IP's, so I could in theory make it
public. The more I've thought about it, though, the more I've come to
the conclusion that it's a bad idea. I guess I will go the
port-forwarding route instead. Thanks for the info.

I partly agree, I think the iPeng/iSqueeze native applications
definitely will be a challenger to the Controller. The Apple license is
at least as restricted as the Logitech version, so the reason is IMHO
not the licensing but the hardware it self. The iPod/iPhone hardware is
better than the Controller hardware in so many ways and the iPod Touch
is actually cheaper for the end user than the Controller.

The Apple licensing is IMHO even worse than the Logitech license, it
requires you to purchase a Apple computer with Leopard OS to even be
able to compile the code and it requires you to pay additionally $99 to
be able to even install the compiled code on your own iPod/iPhone
hardware.

The iPeng skin version which is easier to modify for a third party
developer is a bit too slow to challenge the Controller. The latest
version is a lot closer than the 0.4.x versions but the Controller
still feels a bit faster.

I don't think this is much of a risk. And if the company thought so, it
could easily end the risk, which hasn't happened.

I suspect that there are a lot of people who just buy products, use
what comes in the box, and are happy with whatever functionality is
built in. Most people don't screw around with stuff they get, in the
way I suspect you and some of your cohorts do. Nothing wrong with that,
have fun. But understand most people don't approach things the same
way.

The technical user market is small and probably already pretty
saturated.

Re: [slim] Just curious: when/why did you get your first Slim/Logitech player?

2008-10-20 Thread erland

During 2005 I got my first iPod (iPod mini) I connected it to the music
equipment in the living room and after a while I realized I missed two
things:
- Remote control
- A screen that was visible a few meters away

In december 2005 I found and purchase a Squeezebox 3 and during
Christmas 2005 I started to learn perl, in middle of January 2006 the
first version of the TrackStat plugin was released and after that I've
had a lot less spare time than before.

Unfortunately I hadn't realized what lossless format was before I got
the Squeezebox, so I had already ripped all my records to MP3 for the
iPod which I now had to rip again to FLAC format.

The Squeezebox is definitely the hardware equipment that has made most
changes in my life during the last 10 years, it changed how I listen to
music and it changed what I do with my spare time.

It's Contributors, although it gloms together both the album artist and
track artist, that may be the best you can do. Seems to be the same
thing that the default skin displays in the now playing window.

I'll post the template later tonight when I get home. You might need
to adjust the font size depending on the size of the display, but
that's easy to do.
