I do hope something like the SB3 stays a mainstay in the SD roadmap. It

 Hi All,

Having a number of problems with my Duet controller recently, I noticed
that I was getting the BIOD problems as many have experienced and
outlined in the sticky. Given that I upgraded to v7.2.1 of SC but have
 had more problems since:

 - Can't upgrade to latest version of SBC firmware (r3191)
 - Unstable on both SC SN
 - Slow response
 - Controller freezing and rebooting e.g. if I go into browse an artist
from my library then it will freeze and cause the controller to
 restart
 - Losing connection to SBR/Music source

Hazarding a guess then I would say its to with the firmware being out
of sync with 7.2.1, what do others think ?

 Cheers
 Ian

Hi.

I had the same problem with the controller freezing upon entering
artists that had multiple albums. When entering artists that had only a
single album, controller worked fine. This was on my ReadyNAS DUO with
SC 7.2.1 installed.
Then, out of curiosity, I tried installing SC 7.2.1 on my WinXP box,
just to see how that worked. I then connected my controller to the SC
on the WinXP box, and all of a sudden, the controller had some new SW
downloaded from the SC on the WinXP box. The controller has since
worked fine, also after I switched back to the SC on the ReadyNAS.
Maybe I was just lucky, but as a workaround maybe it could work for you
to, if you have a win box, no guarantees though :-)

regards
Lars

I have solved my original problem - it was caused by a misbehaving

Re: [slim] SB3 died

2008-11-12 Thread aubuti

Sorry to hear about that. Do you get any red glow on the back side of
the SB3 (I think that's the optical output)? Do you have another power
supply you could use to test whether it's the power supply or the SB3
itself? (make sure is PS is the right voltage, amperage, and polarity)

If you're sure it's the SB3, contact Logitech/Slim Devices. Remember
that at some point the warranty changed from 1 year to 2 years. And if
it's out of warranty, they will usually fix things for a US$90 flat
fee.

It might help to clarify which part of the Duet you mean, the Receiver
or the Controller. And if you mean the Controller, do you mean for
controlling SC or for playback on the SBC itself, which is available in
SC7.3?

The other day I was getting dropouts playing FLAC files to my SBC at
around 60 feet from the router, including through one exterior wall. It
was fine for controlling SC, but the signal wasn't strong enough to keep
up with the FLAC, especially when I went to some of the lower parts of
the yard, where the house foundation walls might have been getting in
the way.

For the receiver, I don't think my house is big enough to determine the
upper bound.

Is this intended for I.E. only? I notice there is no shuffle status in
Firefox, but other than that it looks pretty good.

For this project, I used IE because it is built into Windows XP Home
which is driving the remote LCD monitor in the family room. I didn't
want to clog it up with a bunch of software nor have people interact
with it. The PC, being really small (about the size of desktop hard
drive) is hidden behind the couch and has a wireless keyboard/mouse
which I keep in a cabinet.

Should work on any browser since it is just HTML. I just tested it on
Firefox and the shuffle status appears normally. However, I noticed
that the track info has moved to below the album art instead of to the
right of it. Interesting. Can you post a screenshot?

One other thing I did was comment out your comment tag. In HTML you
generally use !-- comment_text --.

Thanks for the tip. I found the comment/comment reference somewhere
and assumed all browsers interpreted it. I changed it to use the !--
comment_text -- tag.

Also, what size is all your album art, or what size do you find is
needed to look acceptable?

Approx 50% of my album art is around 300x300. The other half of the art
is 500x500. I think 500x500 looks better while not being too big. The
HTML code does enlarge the image a bit, which slightly distorts the
300x300 image while the 500x500 looks really great. Still, 300x300
seems acceptable for this pupose. However, I would like to convert my
300x300 art someday.

No, it doesn't download the whole file.
But it uses QuickTime on iPhone, which will download parts of the file
in chunks of 5MB and buffer it. Plenty of time for your connection to
come back on outagages.

Navigation with the skin is only basic, but the QT screen coming up
allows you to navigate within the track.

Re: [slim] Future of SB3 ?

2008-11-12 Thread maggior

I cannot imagine the SB3 being discontinued without an evolutionary
replacement in the pipeline to follow it up. IMO, there is still a
market for a player with a display. If I could only have either a Duet
or an SB3, I would choose an SB3. The usefulness of the display for
weather and time is a significant feature for me. It's also quite
stable.

The Duet is great but IMHO bugs are still being shaken out of it. I
just ran into a scenario myself where I have 2 servers and can switch
the SB3s between them but not the Duet. More major features are being
added (playback through the controller) which will certainly need time
to stabilize too.

The SB3 must be a cash cow at this point since the guts of it were
designed back when the SB2 was introduced. The thing I think they
would be worried about is parts obsolescence. The Duet was introduced
about a year ago and was a radical change with the introduction of the
controller. Certainly they are still recouping development costs on
it.

Perhaps falling prices in Europe have something to do with the state of

I cache the albums list (as you do, too, as far as I can see), so that
is not THAT much of an issue.
BTW, what's a large library? I don't have one myself, I only have 700

From what I heard during the beta, the worst thing - performance wise -
is browsing Genres, if you have a long list of Genres or many
Artists/Albums within a Genre this is slow. Same on the SBC.
Hopefully, NewSchema will do away with that.

is browsing Genres, if you have a long list of Genres or many
Artists/Albums within a Genre this is slow. Same on the SBC.
Hopefully, NewSchema will do away with that.

I haven't bothered with genre browsing yet as it didn't seem like a
priority. I only have around 700 albums or so too and it takes about 10
seconds to sync but one of my beta testers had over 3000 albums.

Polling. Had tons of that code (logic) lying around from the skin. Will
probably change that for a later version. Gives a bit of a delay for

I started off with the polling approach but found polling the server
for status updates impacted on performance too much so I've moved over
to a notification-based approach, maintaining as much state as possible
in the domain model of the app, only retrieving status updates where
necessary.

There is something quite cool about changing the volume (using the
normal SqueezeBox remote) and seeing the volume slider update in
realtime. :)

Re: [slim] Nokia Comes with Music

2008-11-12 Thread Ant

Yes keep forever.

The deal is available on PAYG mobiles as well as contract.

If you buy a Nokia 5310 from Orange they are £130 on PAYG. This then
gets you a 12 month subscription to Nokia's music service where you can
download any of 2.1 million tracks they have. Once downloaded they are
yours to keep forever.

The snags are that you can only use them on one computer (although they
will allow you to transfer them to another once the computer dies - the
idea is they are only available on one computer at a time) and you can
only play them on your nokia phone.

Seems a great deal to me. Only problem is I already have a PAYG Nokia
5310 and the downloads are only available with a newly purchased
phone!

As for the 5310 - it is a good phone and the sound quality as a
portable music player is very good, better than most other phones I
have heard and as good as most mp3 players too. It can only have a max.
of 8gb memory, but that is quite a good anmount really.

I just wonder if it is possible to download the tracks and store them
on my NAS drive and play them through slimserver to my squeezebox?

SqueezeCenter is not audio player software, it is audio server software.
If you want to play something on your pc, use SoftSqueeze, which is a
Java-based software SB emulator. You can find it under Extras in your
SC menu (left side). Or you could try SqueezePlay, which emulates the
SB Controller.

[slim] How to configure music files on USB HD using UBUNTU

2008-11-12 Thread JMK

I have tried for some good time now to get SqueezeServer (running as
service) under Ubuntu to be able to access my My Book external 500GB
VFAT hard disk with my music collection.

Any clues? The best I have been able to do is to login, manually mount
the disk. However, my experience is that from time to time the disk
disappears and I'll need to re-mount manually again and again.

The problem is that if I'm not around, then the family is deprived of
music in case of reboots, power failures (I live in India) or when the
drive disappears.

Any pointers in the specific configuration steps would be greatly
appreciated.

Re: [slim] What the farthest you have gotten a signal with a Duet?

2008-11-12 Thread Howard Passman

The Boom and the SBR have worked at approx 85'. I've never tried
farther than that.

The SBC since I've been trying 7.3 has picked up that far and maybe a
hair farther.

All three were out side with the router being inside. I can accurately
measure it if you want. I'm basing it on my family room being 12' wide,
the deck being 15' wide, the deck around the pool being 10', the pool
40' and then where I place the SB's about another 10' from there.

It's almost a straight line and on the same horizon.

Howard

BTW, no where near that far once you leave the level the router is on.
No problems with the SBR or Boom, but the SBC doesn't pick up that well
upstairs. Lots of junk between the router and the bed room.

[slim] SB3 suddenly doesn't start playing song

2008-11-12 Thread .brum

Hi,

I ran into a curious situation, where SB3 suddenly started getting
stuck when starting playing a song. It shows that it starts, showing
the song progress bar after a long-ish while, but then nothing happens.
It doesn't seem to matter whether it's a flac or mp3, or even Internet
radio stream. Otherwise the player is very responsive, it doesn't
freeze.

I have booted the server and verified that I can play the same songs
with Foobar2000 from the server (over slower network connection), there
seems to be no general problem with the server.

This started after I tried to play a song that was supposed to be a 5.1
DTS file. Could this have gotten something stuck in the player somehow?

Is there a way to reset the player, or what else could I try to do to
fix this?

TIA,

.brum

o.k., I checked it. It's 135 from my Linksys router (go figure) to the
end of my back yard. I still had two bars on my SBC!! The router is
in the house 13 feet from the sliding doors.

The second shot is the view to my house from where I was standing. The
third shot is the SBC.

The 1st shot is from my front yard. About 80 feet from the router and
through the entire house. Still had 2 bars.

Pretty amazing and especially for the SBC. The latest firmware didn't
even glitch out there.

Re: [slim] Trouble with MusicIP Headless, SC7.3, and Sugarcube

2008-11-12 Thread cparker

ob_kook;359061 Wrote:
This is not a re-post of my other thread, but rather a continuation. I
had done enough changes to my system that it just seemed to be more
confusing to stay on that same thread. (Thanks Raven22 for your
 assistance on that thread)

Problem - cannot get MIP Headless integrated correctly with SC, and as
a result, cannot get Sugarcube working either.

 Description -
 System:
 * Intel dualCore box (home built) with Vista Ultimate.
 * RAID 5 comprised of 4x600GB SATA drives direct attached to the mobo
 * SC is running on a virtual machine hosted by the Vista O/S on WinXP
 * (For all intents and purposes, consider I am working with XP Pro SP2
as a VM is exactly like a physical machine)
 * (Since the RAID5 is one the Vista O/S, it acts as a network share
 volume)
 * SC - Version: 7.3 - 23837 @ Fri Nov 7 03:08:40 PST 2008
 * MIP - v.1.8.1b, installed, analyzed, and working properly (can send
 mixes)
 * - Port is set to 10003, and API services disabled
 * MIP Headless - installed, set up according to Spicefly's guide,
Spicefly's skin, and can create a test mix.
 * - MMM.ini file is configured with the proper libary path, and
 port is set to 10002.
 * Sugarcube - v1.7.1 configured according to Spicefly's guide

OK, before this, I was on 7.2, and due to the incredibly long MIP
import times, I decided to switch to 7.3 since the patch was integrated
 in that version.

Before that time, I *did* get both MIP and Sugarcube working, but I had
double entries in my library. After configuring all of the above,
refreshing the MIP headless cache, and rescanning SC, I no longer have
M in my library entries, and SugarCube simply stops or repeats a
single song depending on what repeat setting I choose.

I've gone through the threads by Model Citizen, SlimChance, OhPinchy
and others, meticulously followed the SD Wiki, Spicefly's guide, and
the MIP forums, but I am just plain stuck.

I'm sure it is something I've overlooked or done incorrectly, because
everything obviously works, but like proofreading your own writing, I
 can't spot the glaring mistake.

Thanks in advance for your help!

 Kook

Must likely is the Port number setting. ie. you have SC set to talk via
10003 but the MIP headless is active on port 10002. (or vice versa)

When you press the create text mix button in the MIP headless, look at
the Port number in the URL string ie. http://localhost:1000x ???
Then make sure to use the 1000x everywhere in SC/Sugarcube etc.

If its not that, then it is likely firewall settings or AV blocking the
1000x port.

Additional tests you can do, is start the API in the MIP GUI settings
and see if SugarCube starts working. Which would indicate whether that
Port is blocked by something.

I rolled back from 7.3 as I found it unstable and the new MIP patch
just chewed my library up, you might want to drop back to 7.2.1 and
just bite the bullet on long import times.

Good Luck

[slim] Why does external HDD = slow navigation?

2008-11-12 Thread Letten

I wasn't too happy with the performance of navigating my music, this
goes for the web interface (especially browsing album art) and the
controller interface (slow album art) and the Boom for that matter
(fast scrolling on the wheel).

I have SC on a XP laptop and my music(and artwork) was on a external
USB 2.0 HDD. As I could see that, all the actions described above,
resulted in activity on my external HDD, I decided to invested in a
new, larger, internal HDD for my laptop (to fit all my music). And
suddenly the performance is much much better. The artwork displays
almost instantly on the webinterface, and scrolling with artwork on the
controller is also much better and the same goes for the Boom (text
only, but stil much better).

I thought that the all the relevant metadata used for navigation was
stored in the database underneath the SC installation (laptop internal
HDD) and that SC only needed to access my external HDD when I'm
actually playing some music.

So why am I seeing this improovement in performance by mooving the
music to the internal disc?

I doubt this is problem, but it's worth asking before chasing other
explanations: are you browsing by Music Folders? If so, then SC is just
reading straight from the files and not making use of the metadata in
its cache. That's the only explanation I can think of for what you're
seeing. If you are browing by any other method (Artist, Album, Genre,
etc.) then I'm puzzled too.

If its not that, then it is likely firewall settings or AV blocking the

I've opened port 10002 just in case.

So far, no luck with the above.

Additional tests you can do, is start the API in the MIP GUI settings

I started the API, and changed the Sugarcube settings to 10003 to match
the MIP GUI (I assume I should do that). Now I'll wait for about 9 hours
for a rescan.

(I'm going to create a small directory in order to speed up the
troubleshooting process by only having a hundred or so songs to scan.)

I rolled back from 7.3 as I found it unstable and the new MIP patch just
chewed my library up, you might want to drop back to 7.2.1 and just bite

 Good Luck

I may take your advice. I won't mind the rescans as much after getting
this all sorted, so in the meantime a test database that is small
should make the imports bearable.

Thanks a LOT for your help!

[slim] Remote Control Issues

2008-11-12 Thread jjdarling

Hey All,

I lost my remote control about a month back, and recently figured out
how to use a Universal Remote with the JVC DVD codes to talk to the
squeezebox, so I have it back up and running now. It was defunct for a
while because we recently changed our security settings in our
apartment, so it wasn't connecting at all.

Its back on the network now, but since the Squeezecenter on my computer
is upgraded, the new remote has no Brightness button for me to press
and hold, so it won't upgrade the firmware in the SB. Does anybody know
if there is a brightness equivalent for the Sony RM-V310. Alternately,
since I'm on the network now, is there a way to upgrade through the
browser control?

Re: [slim] Remote Control Issues

2008-11-12 Thread Mnyb

Well it's depending on how old SqueezeCenter/firmware you are upgrading
from.

In the never SB3 firmware's you go in to the settings (hold left arrow
for a while) and somewhere there's a setting for automatic firmware
upgrade.

So if you set that the old SB3 behaves like an SBR and upgrades by
itself every time you upgrade SqueezeCenter.

Re: [slim] EAC + library wifi = DOA

2008-11-12 Thread radish

Try going to the CDDB URL you gave in your first post from a browser. If
that works (you should get a message about an incorrect number of
arguments), it's probably the proxy settings (strictly speaking it's
proxy, not firewall - they're different things). If that doesn't work
either then it's probably something upstream at the library which you
won't be able to (easily) get around.

Fully agreed that adjustment isn't instantaneous, so then just what

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox3 slow response

2008-11-12 Thread radish

No immediate solution to your issue, but some questions and
observations:

1. 3ms ping to Google is false, unless you're physically in their data
center :) Something weird is happening with the network stack when it
enters this low power mode.

2. What makes you say that the music is still streaming although
control doesn't work? Is it just that the music is still playing? That
could simply be the buffer on the SB playing out. My suspicion is that
the network interface is being shut down - that would explain the lack
of SB control and might go someway to explaining the weird ping
results.

3. Can you still browse web sites after the timeout? Including ones you
haven't got cached? If so, does that raise the power consumption again?

[slim] Distortion during loud tracks - my amp is too sensitive - what to do?

2008-11-12 Thread rh2600

I've turned off volume control, and RG on my SB3.

My marantz SR-45 had a tendancy to distort audio coming from its paired
CD player - which I used to address via it's own volume control.

Anyway, its evident that my amp is too sensitive for the Sb3 outputs
too.

The specs for my amp say: Input sensitivity - 185mV/47#8486;.
I assume I need to adjust the Preamp Volume Control, but does anyone
know how to calculate exactly how much?

Cheers

just expect people to start crawling out of the woodwork with all sorts

assistance were helpful or not.

To get a dialog going on the forums, you have to be an active

If this issue is causing you so much grief that you are considering
uprooting your system and rolling the dice with another company's
higher priced less flexible products, why not put forth the minimal
effort required to place a phone call to support before throwing in the
towel?Personally I've found email support and even serious sales

FWIW, the one time I had an issue with my squeezebox, I called Logitech
