[slim] About to add a Boom to a 7.3.3 SC network. Firmware problems with 7.4?

2009-10-24 Thread gorman

Already have an SB2 and an SB3.
The server is always on during the day, turns itself off (S3 standby)
at 3.00 AM and back on at 8.15 AM. At switch off the server sends the
bedroom SB3 to SqueezeNetwork to keep the clock going (at wife
request).

Now I'd like to place the Boom in the bedroom but I have no intention
(yet) to mess with the 7.4 can of worms. If I don't send it to
Squeezenetwork I won't have problems with firmware updates ever, right?
Is Boom capable of keeping the clock screensaver on even when the server
goes down?

2009-10-24 Thread Wirrunna

Is Boom capable of keeping the clock screensaver on even when the
server goes down?

Yes.
I have a boom in my study connected to a 7.3.4 server which also serves
an SB3 Classic in the living room.
The server turns off with Server Power Control and the boom keeps
displaying the time. I didn't do anything to the config in the boom to
get the time to display, it did it itself.

[slim] 7.4 track info?

2009-10-24 Thread thurstongarden

In 7.3, you could drill through on the controller to the track info with
the centre button. Now on 7.4, the centre button shows the playlist and
pressing again = play.

Where has the track info gone? Maybe I am a dullard, but I can't find
it

Slim Devices branded SB3 on SBS7.4.1 via WinXP, all works fine here.
Doubt it's a hardware problem as you can stream fine from MySB, but ya

Is your SB3 getting the FW Updates (press hold Brightness button)

When you say SB3 has a blank screen, is it truly blank (no text)? Or
does it display text but won't play the station?
If no text, try the Power button. Also try holding the Left arrow to

It can play local music fine on SBS?

[slim] Signal strength and Network Test

2009-10-24 Thread danco

I am surprised and concerned that the wireless signal strength of my
Squeezebox 2 is currently shown as 10%. It's not a figure I look at
often, but I could swear it used to be around 60%. And I haven't moved
anything, though I have updated my OS (Mac OS 10.5 to 10.6.1) and
Squeezebox Server.

I am wondering why this has happened, and what I might do about it. The
aerial seems plugged in ok,though I could remove it and reconnect it.

Despite this low figure, playback seems fine, and the network test
shows a 100% figure up till the highest setting, when it drops to around
90%.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox V3 vs Yamaha Naturual Sound CDC-655

2009-10-24 Thread aubuti

The SB doesn't do any EQ. Was your CD player also going through the
AVR's DAC, or were you using the CD player's DAC? If the latter, then
what you're hearing is probably the difference between the CDP's DAC and
the AVR's DAC. If the former, I don't know. (Disclaimer: I'm not an
audiophile either.)

If you haven't done so already, you should probably at least try
comparing the SB3's DAC to your AVR.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox V3 vs Yamaha Naturual Sound CDC-655

2009-10-24 Thread Mnyb

some times it can be that the analog ins on most recievers are digitized
anyway.

So one is listening to DA-AD-DA wich is not good .
You seldom get the full resolution as often this input is rather
unsesitive to aviod clipping .

Use an spl meter and compare the volume ,before listening maybe one is
louder than the other , subtle volume changes is percived as better by
our brain. If one source is 2dB louder you won't hear that as loud but
rather like better when you switch.

So for most receivers the obvious input is the digital one.

The only subtle manipulation sbs and the squeezebox may be guilty of is
replay gain, ei equalization of volume between tracks . But if you turn
of this or do not have replay gain tags it wont matter.
So the squeezebox pass bitferfect audio on its digital out.

[slim] Users in London

2009-10-24 Thread danco

I'm having trouble with my Squeezebox Radio - it won't connect to the
Squeezebox Server.

I'm wondering if there are any users in London who I might visit to
test it out on their system and see if there is a fault on the Radio, or
if it is somewhere in my own system.

I've posted the problems elsewhere, but it isn't any of the more
obvious problems. The Radio connects wirelessly to my router ok (I can
play music from mysqueezebox.com) and my Squeezebox 2 works fine, which
suggests that it isn't a firewall issue.

Just to be 100% clear, the clock which is displayed when the Boom loses

simple time display - not really configurable. It does tell the time

Re: [slim] how do I tag songs with multiple genres?

Hmm, I downloaded mp3tag and when I tagged songs with two genres ( for
example rock; soft rock) instead of making two genres, one called rock
and one called soft rock, it made one genre called rock; soft rock.

There's a setting in SBS that allows you to define a delimiter. IIRC,
the default's ';', hence whilst you see what you've described above
using mp3tag, to SBS it'd be one called rock and one called soft rock.
If you're using FLAC files and want two separate tag entries then use \\
as I described earlier.

[slim] Scan Terminated Unexpectedly - MySQL Error

2009-10-24 Thread dundon00

When trying to clear/rescan my system, I get the error below in the scan
logs after it successfully gets through some albums. I did just upgrade
to 7.4, but it's unclear if that's when this problem started, because I
did get an error when trying to scan/add albums with my previous
version, but noticed 7.4 was out so decided it was time to upgrade. My
setup is really simple--all albums are in one folder, I'm not using
iTunes and don't have a playlists folder. Ideas?

Thanks,
John

Your AntiVirus software is trying to scan the MYI (mysql Index) file
for viruses, which means MySQL can't do its job... and dies.

Convince your AV software to stop scanning MYI and MYD files.

Re: [slim] Users in London

2009-10-24 Thread danco

Well, I had intended this thread to be specifically just to find someone
in London who runs a Squeezebox, so that I can take my Radio along and
test the hardware. I'm beginning to think there may be a hardware issue
with it. I had started other threads (one in Squeezebox Radio, one in
Squeezebox Server, though maybe I should only have made one) for
software help such as yours and Toby's.

Anyway, the answer is that Ping and TCP are shown as Not Connected,
which fits in with my experience that when I try to connect using My
Music I just get told to make sure that Squeezebox Server is running on
my computer. Which it is, and connecting without trouble to my
Squeezebox 2.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I had originally got a good
connection to SBS, which suddenly disappeared. While trying various
attempts to bring it back, I did a factory reset on the Radio.

One thing that surprised me. I tried connecting via ethernet rather
than wireless, and got to Connected via Ethernet. I was therefore a
touch surprised that the diagnostics showed information about my
wireless connection

I didn't mention it in this thread, because its only purpose - as I
specifically said in my first post - was to find someone else with an
SB, so that I could take the Radio along and test if it is a failure of
the Radio. I wasn't expecting any replies other than from people in
London letting.

In my other threads I had mentioned that I used a Mac.

And yes, I don't know the reason, but the Preference Pane, which is the
Mac version of what you are talking about, has most of the same settings
as the Control Panel, but does not include a Diagnostics item.

Well, yes.

But

(a) it's the weekend

(b) I still think that physically trying it on someone else's system is
at least as good a way of diagnosis as a diagnosis by phone. Might take
longer to organise, but would only take a couple of minutes to test.
Going through various tests by phone can be quite a chore, and one never
knows if the support people are just following a script or if they know
what they are talking about.

Just as an example of a place where Logitech aren't up-to-date, their
FAQ page on dealing with firewall issues cover Mac Tiger and Leopard,
but not Snow Leopard as yet.

Certainly I intend to phone support if I don't get a response here, but
I would really prefer actually trying to connect to someone else's
server, as that would reveal at once if the problem is with the Radio or
with my system.

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2009-10-24 Thread Brian Ritchie

... but not any more. Since last time I got DSBridge to work, I've
upgraded to 7.4 (and then 7.4.1). Tonight, I've had the mother of all
troubles trying to get the damn thing to work again.

When I put the URL into SqueezeWhatever, the sound stops on the source
PC, but nothing comes out of my Transporter (or anything else). The
little DSBridge ball turns green, which I think means I'm sending,
honest!; even more tantalising, the album artwork appears on the
Controller; but the Transporter display just goes blank, and no sound
comes out. (I can go back to Now Playing, scroll around other menu
options to my heart's delight, but selecting Now Playing just shows a
blank screen.) How the hell can it be that the Controller can see it,
and believe that the Transporter is playing it, but the Transporter is
not?

There's some gibberish in the SqueezeWhatsit log about some kind of
problem with TitleFormatter.pm, but I have better things to do than try
to work out what the heck that's on about.

To cap it all, I can't get the sodding sound back on the source PC, so
now I can't listen to Spotify at all! This is still so even though I've
changed the playlist on the Transporter, and told it to stop doing
whatever it is that it isn't doing. In earlier attempts, it seemed just
that pausing Spotify for a few seconds was enough for DSBridge to go
blue, but even that no longer works.

Yet another evening wasted pissing around trying to get the bloody
software to work instead of listening to the damn music. I love my
SqueezeWidgets when they work, but when they don't, it's intensely
frustrating!

That message linked to lame-homepage, so I did nothing.

Should one reinstall the dsbridge stuff, I have not touched Spotify.
