Re: [slim] Runaway LAME

2009-11-02 Thread bpa

LAME is used to encode streams intoi MP3 usually because of player
bandwidth issues.

You do not need LAME for AAC. AAC will be transcoded into Flac by
default but if your network is not capable of supporting Flac traffic,
it is usually suggested to enable bit rate limiting which requires LAME.

[slim] update firmware without remote

2009-11-02 Thread cartoga

I have a Squeezebox Classic and would like to upgrade the server but
my remote recently broke and I cannot press the "brightness" button
like requested for the associated firmware update. Does anyone know of a
plugin or command line script to emulate the remote control or at least
tell it to go ahead and update? I do not have any other IR remotes to
use so I would like to avoid those solutions.

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v1.5 (ACC)

2009-11-02 Thread SilverRS8

For Windows 7 users; The font size is larger causing the GUI layout (not
the catalogs) to be slighty off what it should be. This is because
Windows 7, by default, uses a display font size of 125% instead of 100%.
To solve the issue, either change the global windows setting to 100% or
use the CTRL key with the mouse scroll wheel and the mouse pointer on
the ACC screen to lower the zoom factor to 100%.

I believe that changing the zoom factor within Internet Explorer also
has the same effect as ACC actually shares this setting with Internet
Explorer.

Good to hear you've got the Artistsort issue solved.

As for the multiple track artist issue:
SC creates a separate database entry for each performing artist in the
database. A database query then results in multiple records for each
track which is why ACC repeats a track multiple times as it does not yet
cope with this. It would require considerable effort to provide this
support which I would gladly invest however as of version 8 of
squeezecenter, the whole database design is changed. To prevent a lot of
work now and again on version 8 I will put the effort in the SC8
compatible version.

To be honest, the transition to version 8 will make it more difficult
to interface with and may even come to a scenario where the database
file has to be copied first locally before ACC will be able to get the
data out of it. ACC may become more user unfriendly but this is due to
Logitechs choice to leave MySQL as database platform and use SQlite
which doesn't support remote access natively.

I'm wondering if the multiple artist issue can be solved within an SQL
statement. That is that within the global query ACC performs which
essentially creates a temporary database table, is it possible to
combine multiple artists to a single string?
If there are any ACC users who are really good in SQL and are willing
to help me out on this one please drop me a mail. If it can be solved
using SQL it would make the fix a lot easier to implement and I'll
implement it in the version that support SC7.x instead of waiting for 8.

[slim] Simple question? How to download and album and listen to it right away?

2009-11-02 Thread mmonacel

This is probably a VERY easy question, however for the life of me, I
can't figure out how to quickly, simply, and easily get new music that I
downloaded onto my Squeezebox and listen to it in a timely manner.
Downloading the music is no problem - and neither is moving it to my
ReadyNAS. The issue comes when I need to add it to the SB's indexed
list of music. The only options I can see to either basically do a full
scan or a scan for new or changed music. Unfortunately scanning for new
or changed music takes a long time (~10 minutes). That's completely
unnecessary IMO. I'm all excited to listen to some new music and then I
need to wait seemingly forever to actually listen to it through my SB.
Is there anyway to point to a single directory and say "add this folder"
or "scan this folder" for new music so I can get right down to digging
my new tunes?

I have about 360 GB of music in about 2300 total folders.

[slim] the new software remote control for mysqueezebox.com is not working properly

2009-11-02 Thread mortslim

Going through all the possible "apps" including favorites, shoutcast,
rhapsody, pandora, etc., the new software remote control is not working
properly for most of its functions. I am surprised that over a month
since release, there are still major problems with it.

There are too many problems with it to individually list, but it
clearly is an "alpha", not even a "beta" release.

Does anyone have an estimated date when it should be functional 100%?

In the meantime, since the old player worked fine, can that be
reinstated pending usefulness of the new remote?

[slim] Server crash related to custom scan

2009-11-02 Thread lrossouw

Hi

My server crashed this morning after completing the daily scan for new
music. This made me late as my alarm didn't go off. The scan completed
fine. Custom scan may still have been running. The scanner log
indicates rescan completed at 05:02. See the server log below.

Will look at the file in question to see if I can see anything wrong
with the tags. Any other ideas?

Cheers
Louis

[slim] Runaway LAME

2009-11-02 Thread wakey

I hope this is the right place for this...

I use Squeezebox Server to play my iTunes library from my Mac (Snow
Leopard) to my Squeezebox Classic (it wasn't "classic" when I got it...)
over a wireless network. I have LAME installed because I understand I
need that to play my AAC tracks. But I've noticed recently in Activity
Monitor that the 'lame' process can take up something like 50-60% of my
CPU. Even if I'm not playing anything at the moment, even if the
Squeezebox is turned off, 'lame' will still be there using up lots of
cycles.

So I guess my question is twofold: do I still really need to use LAME?
And is there a way to set the server software to quit LAME when it's not
needing it anymore?

SB2's havent been sold in ages, SB3's are very solid and stable (much
like the Boom, actually) but getting 'boring'. Boom is slick enough to
be special even if it's mostly like an SB3 with a builtin
amp/speakers/controls

Transporter users generally hang out in the audiophile section.

The subject line is a bit off: Booms don't use Squeezeplay...

It's really more like "products introduced from Boom onward" get their
own section.

Have you tried with a variety of tracks, including some of the ones they
promote as new releases or "recommended"? I have sometimes come across
some tracks in the Napster library that can't be played via SB or even
the web-based Napster player -- and found that they are tracks that can
only be purchased from Napster, not streamed on the subscription
service. This is a small minority of tracks, but if you happen to be
only trying, say, George Harrison, you'll be stuck with the "can't open

Re: [slim] What is the easiest / best way to

2009-11-02 Thread MrRalph

Hihi, yes that was obvious. Let me elaborate a little.

Earlier in ITunes, I used to have some playlists to narrow down my
collection. One was the 'Audiophile' selection, with a rule like: Album
contains 'MFSL' or 'DCC' or 'SBM' etc.

Another was a view on CD's for which I yet had to enter the year/date.
The formula was 'year = ""' or something.

So I had some autoplaylists in ITunes I could maintain very easily. Now
I moved away from the Mac and ITunes and like to have a similar
functionality. And not by searching each time.

Enter the Dynamic Playlist plugin & SQL playlist I thought. But that
was very much focused on generating randomly tracks from or more albums.
Could't fit it to my needs.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks, Ralph

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v1.5 (ACC)

2009-11-02 Thread eyeball

The ARTISTSORT is working now (just three minor changes to your script
:) ).
But I discovered another problem. When an album is released by more
than one artist, like "Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe" (which often
happens with jazz albums), I'm tagging the album with
ARTIST = "Jon Anderson; Bill Bruford; Rick Wakeman; Steve Howe"
ALBUMARTIST = "Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe"
The ARTIST tagging lets Squeezecenter list the album under each of the
named artists and under the band name. When I use ACC and enable the
track listing, the album is correctly listed under the band name, but
each of the tracks is listed four times (as many times as artists are
involved). So I get:
Tracks:
1 - Themes (5:58)
1 - Themes (5:58)
1 - Themes (5:58)
1 - Themes (5:58)
2 - Fist Of Fire (3:32)
2 - Fist Of Fire (3:32)
2 - Fist Of Fire (3:32)
2 - Fist Of Fire (3:32)
3 - Brother Of Mine (10:22
...
Do you have an idea why this happens and can you find a solution?

'zolx' was as good as any. JJ is "James Junior". My dad's name is Don.

Re: [slim] 7.4.(x) random mix excluding Genres doesn't work

2009-11-02 Thread curry100

Hi,

Thanks for the info, I'll bear it in mind if I change from 7.3.3
There were 2 problems I seemed to have, the genre one listed here, and
another with regards to playlists which was confirmed as a bug.

Till that one is also sorted out I'll stay with 7.3.3 since I only have
a couple of SB3's.

Thanks for the help,
Harry

Re: [slim] Add to playlist in 7.4

2009-11-02 Thread DigitalMitch

Yes, it's been removed, hoepfully temporarily.

see http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68568

There's a Beta feature in 7.5 to allow some "shortcut" keys to be
assigned, however this doesn't currently allow configuration of
centre/right to the context menu which seems to be the major grip as
that button has the tendency to wipe playlists.

There's an enhancemnt request raised as

[slim] Add to playlist in 7.4

2009-11-02 Thread dave77

When I was on 7.3 I'm sure there was an option whereby whilst playing a
song I could navigate to another song (via the player) and add it to a
playlist (choose song > click right > select add to playlist), navigate
to another song, add it, and so on.

Has this been removed in 7.4?

Re: [slim] Ethernet Cables: How well do they work?

2009-11-02 Thread cunobelinus
Homeplug works fine for me - excellently, in fact - for everything,
and especially for streaming music The wiring in this place is truly
appalling, but there have been no problems, issues or even hitches. No
drop-outs, no break-ups - unlike my old wireless and even
(occasionally) my old ethernet bridging set-ups - and absolutely no
degrading of sound quality. This is streaming mainly AIFF, with some
ALAC, using 200Mb plugs including the top item on this page:

I'd not now go back to wireless now unless I returned to running SC on
an untethered laptop, or was using an SB on long extension cable. Just
now, though, if it weren't for iPeng, I'd be switching off the
wireless network altogether.
