[slim] Does digital volume control cost resolution?

2010-02-07 Thread gdg

The old rule of thumb was that for each 6db of digital attenuation one
lost 6 db of resolution. I believe that no longer holds with devices
that are processing 16 bit data with an internal resolution that is
higher (i.e. 20 or more bits). I have a squeezebox 3 and use the digital
output into some pretty good equipment starting with a big ben to
re-clock the data stream. The SB3 is being pressed into double duty as a
volume control for a little while. Am I degrading the signal?

replacement remotes, and such. I always thought they could have it both
ways but I guess e-commerce is just too hard. :/

Interesting statement.
Thing is - and I really can understand sublemon there - that for
instance here in the europe logitech shop (also on amazon.de) the
receiver is still sold.

No mentioning that it is discontinued already.
So new users are indeed left in the believe that they could buy a Duet
even today and can expand with receivers later on.

I also don't understand it, as the receiver needs to be manufactured
still (or we soon see an upgrade to the Duet ?).
It is unique in its price and form factor - if I wanted to expand I
also wouldn't want to use a classic or touch due to their form factor.

The SB3 uses a 24-bit internal implementation for it's level control.
Provided you keep the volume fairly high you shoudn't notice too much

I think his issue is overstated but worthy of formal clarification.
Logitech support have stated that the SBR is obsolete...

Simple issue before everybody gets excited is the SBR portfolio or not?

Re: [slim] You are not authorized=Sirius You are logged in in another location=Slacker

mkanet,

I don't use Sirius, but I do use Slacker quite often. The only time I
get such Slacker duplicate login errors is when I actually do have a
duplicate login (computer on Slacker UI or another player).

A long time ago there was an issue with the SqueezeNetwork UI (this is
now MySqueezeBox.com) where Slacker would see your computer logged into
SqueezeNetwork and your player(s) as duplicate logins.
That issue was corrected, but I wonder if the issue is back for some
network setup configurations?

As a *very* long shot, try logging off any instances of
MySqueezeBox.com UI logins.
Other than making double sure you have no current logins (MySB or
Slacker) and no other players accessing Slacker, I wouldn't know what
else to suggest. :(

I agree with you, the SBR should be made available as a separate item,
even if they had to make it a special purchase and increased it's price

I don't use a Duet or SBR myself, but a few alternatives:
- buy a used SBR or SB3 (as suggested), I'd sooner buy used than pay
2x that for a Sonos alternative (and I highly respect Sonos)
- buy a new SB3 for $179

The basis for the post is a single e-mail from support telling sublemon

There are other instances where support give advice which seem to be

[slim] Squeezebox Classic (SB3) distorts on max. vol.

2010-02-07 Thread bhaagensen

Hi,

my SB3 has recently started to distort really bad when the volume is
turned high up. I have NO idea why. Here are the relevant facts (that I
can think of):

-No transcoding, crossfading etc.
-Distortion occurs on flac and mp3.
-Duet and TP on same network does not do this.
-Started to occur recently.
-Speakers/amp sounds fine if SB3 volume is at e.g. 70 and I turn up the
amp

I tried recording the distortion on my internal laptop mic. Not good.
But I uploaded it anyway. The first 15 sec. showcases the distortion,
the last part, how it should sound.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/110443/Lydoptagelse%203.mp3

Advice highly appreciated.

Also note that SB Classic is currently available from Amazon.de for €150 or

pay. Even including the tax if you're in the UK, that's still only £141.80

Looking at Logitech's US web site, the standalone SBR is still shown (at
$149.99), BUT you can't buy it through the site since there's no add to
cart button. If you select online retailers it shows Staples and CDW
as carrying it. Staples site shows it as out of stock, CDW have the
availability as Call.

Logitechsqueezebox.com doesn't mention the standalone SBR as a product
at all. It does say that you can add additional SBRs to a Duet, but the
link from that is broken.

www.logitechsqueezebox.com is a ghost site. Don't go there unless
you're looking for an archive. All of the online store has been moved
to www.logitech.com. That was done a few months ago, but for reasons I
can't fathom Logitech's web peoeple still haven't implemented redirects

Re: [slim] Logitech deceptive marketing - don't buy their products

I think the fact that there is nowhere in the US currently that has
stock on new SBRs confirms it's not available. No new ones on Amazon or
 other internet retailers.

Someone here posted that the usual logitech build cycle is to build a
ton of units, then sell them all off before they issue a new build
cycle. They supposedly have always done this for keyboards, mice, etc,
making retailers go nuts as 'out of stock' conditions can last for
weeks.

If that is true, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see them extend that
procedure to the SBR, even though it seems like a stupid process to me.

'Not available' perhaps. Insufficient information to say if that sku
is actually deleted or simply out of stock.

Re: [slim] Logitech deceptive marketing - don't buy their products

2010-02-07 Thread sublemon

My problem is just with Logitech and not the SB as a product. They just
seem to have a funny way of handling the business. I know they care
about mice and keyboards a lot more but come on, the SB is the most
attention-worthy product they have (ok and maybe the remotes they make)
-- they should be better with the handling of the product.

If this is the case it is even more deceptive because it may cause some
customers like me to buy a used or obsolete unit, instead of just
telling us when/if the SBR will be available, I would be happy to wait.
But in any case my response form their support is the standalone is
discontinued so I guess I will just act on that info at this point.

Re: [slim] You are not authorized=Sirius You are logged in in another location=Slacker

2010-02-07 Thread mkanet

Toby, thank you so much for replying and trying to help. I'm a network
engineer for over 18 years; and understand some things are very hard to
prove without a very good logging system on the backend/protocol
analyzer (on the mysqueezebox.com side).

I definitely got rid of all other instances of slacker. The key thing
to realize is it's not related to just one mysqueezebox.com dependant
service. Also, the services I use (Slacker and Sirius) worked great a
while back before your backend was changed; hence, looking at the
mysqueezebox.com component as a factor. I have seen this issue happen a
little after Logitech bought this technology; and, changes started
happening after SqueezeCenter 7.2.1 to the backend. Let's face it,
there aren't a whole lot of options to work with on my local Squeezebox
server; and, I only have two squeezebox clients. Whatever it is, I use
two separate accounts on the mysqueezebox.com side for each music
service... and MOST IMPORTANTLY... this doesnt happen to simple music
stations that use mp3 playlists (which my clients contact directly to;
instead of getting mysqueezebox.com in the mix.

Whatever the problem is, it wasn't a problem when we used the older
backend along with squeezecenter 7.2.1 (which isnt that long ago).
Whoever works on the back end should probably have a clue what changed
during that period along with the hints I posted. I sure as heck hope,
the engineers dont just sweep this issue under the rug hoping people
will stop complaining about it. It doesnt happen to many people, but
there are certain configurations which trigger this and cause
mysqueezebox.com to muff things up.

As a *very* long shot, try logging off any instances of
 MySqueezeBox.com UI logins.
Other than making double sure you have no current logins (MySB or
Slacker) and no other players accessing Slacker, I wouldn't know what
 else to suggest. :(

FWIW - I just bought a dented box SB Classic and it seems like a dandy
unit -
why not get one of these and use them as your additional receiver - it
has digital outs and even has a display!

Re: [slim] Is there a way to send song info (now playing) to Trillian chat?

2010-02-07 Thread bobkoure

Well, the now playing info is available on a per=player basis from the
server's CLI interface.
As an easy example, you can get the current artwork for a particular
player using the following address in your browser.
Have a look at -http://server:port/en/html/docs/cli-api.html- for
a description of the CLI interface.

This is only useful if you're using your own server (once the basic SB
pattern, but I guess that's changing).

Provided you keep the volume fairly high you shoudn't notice too much

If you notice a loss in resolution with such a low level then maybe you
should not use so much gain ;)

Re: [slim] Is there a way to send song info (now playing) to Trillian chat?

2010-02-07 Thread mkanet

I'm actually thinking of the bigger picture with a easy way to relay
this information to multiple social networking/chat networks...

One thing to our advantage is squeezebox server does a ok job sending
played songs to audioscrobbler's RSS feed via your lastFM account.

Since facebook, twitter, trillian, aim, yahoo, etc all have their own
way of displaying a status message, it makes sense to look for a common
standard. ie, an RSS or ATOM feed.

It probably wouldnt take too long for someone to make small plugins to
something like plugin, facebook, etc to replace the user's status
message with the lastest update from audioscrobbler.

For example:

http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/2.0/user/mkanet/recenttracks.rss

(Please dont laugh at what I listen to :)

I didnt look hard enough for a good solution to do this for at least
Trillian Astra... but, I think RSS might be the way to go since most
apps/sites are RSS-friendly.

If someone figures out a way to do with without requiring for me to
write a universal Now Playing app for various services, I'm sure they
would be a pretty popular person. Music services such as Pandora
already update facebook and twitter... its just a matter of time before
Logitech/squeeze community realizes this is something desirable for
social networking/chat apps like Trillian. I might be just a little bit
ahead of the times... but things are slowly catching on... with people
realizing the benefits of such features...

Re: [slim] Why... oh why...

2010-02-07 Thread Michael Herger
There is an option to turn off settings synchronisation. I've had it
disabled since the first time SqueezeNetwork decided to screw up all my local
 settings.

I know that my voice doesn't really count in such issues. But my prefs file
must be years old...

Therefore instead of just turning off an option and pray it didn't work we
should try to understand why it didn't work in _your_ case. Would you be
willing (and able) to retry again? Keep a daily/hourly/... copy of your files
and try again?
