 loaded at a later time,
I query the artist information along and add it to the complete album

As it is now, your NAS cannot deliver 20 albums in 10 seconds
 (timeout).

Thats unacceptable for a complete list of e.g. 500 albums (=4 minutes)
But it might be permissable for 10 albums of a single artist.

Well, it's not exactly a NAS. In some respects it's even worse ;) A
slow pc with limited ram (384mb) with the data on a usb 1.1 device. But
it actually performs resonably well (good enough that I wont cash out
for a new one until I know if the touch will satisfy my needs).

I think i will try enabling the SB server on the desktop pc at home and
connect to that to see how performance compares. Still not a state of
the art machine, but comparable to a typical netbook.

For load-comparison, the largest artist in my library has 21 albums,
which loads flawlessly every time.

Ps, you should get to bed earlier :)

[slim] How do I exit 'Edit' mode in Favorites?

2010-03-03 Thread TheLastMan

I am using SqueezeCenter 7.3.3.

In the web interface I have been organising my Favorites into folders
for easy management. However I do not seem to be able to exit the Edit
mode. When I go into a folder under favorites it still has all the edit
icons and clicking on the 'Play' arrow has no effect.

Any clues?

Would restarting SqueezeCenter help?

That shouldn't be an issue. In sync mode the stream is always proxied

As for the original question, are you sure you are actually switching

i never switch off the controller ;) Just place it in the craddle. There
is a menu point to turn off the receiver, but i normaly don't do that.
To phrase my problem in other words.

I start an internet stream on radio and receiver (synced, yes i know
they are proxied), then i turn off the radio by pressing the power
button on the radio. The receiver will continue to receive the stream. I
will never notice because the amp of the receiver is turned off. So it
will happily stream the whole night.

Thinking about it, what happens if a sleep timer on one SB powers off
the SB. Will synchronized players also power off (guess not)? Will they
stop playing?

Re: [slim] iPeng vs. Android apps...?

2010-03-03 Thread hunta

I have both iPeng on an 8GB iPod Touch and SqueezeController on a Nexus
One.

iPeng is a more mature product and is therefore more robust and has
been through one or two visual overhauls.

SqueezeController is less mature with the very occasional glitch here
and there but I wouldn't say it's flaky by any means. Some might say the
navigation is slightly more intuitive, although the cosmetics are still
being worked on (I'm helping out on the beta programme).

One major plus for Android is the lack of restrictions on what is and
isn't allowed. For instance, downloading tracks or whole albums /
artists at a time to local storage is implemented in SqueezeController,
but apparently disallowed (though theoretically easy to implement) by
the Apple Police in their infinite wisdom. It's the principle of that
which really jars for me to be honest.

In terms of applications, until one or other brings streamed playing in
first there's little in it. Both will take the place of a Controller
easily. You're better off focusing on your other demands for the device.
If it comes down to Apple vs. Android, I'd say that rests largely on
whether you're someone who likes an easy,
always-works-in-its-potentially-prescriptive way approach or something
more flexible, open source with the pit-falls that go with it.

FWIW I found myself in the second category.

Re: [slim] How do I exit 'Edit' mode in Favorites?

2010-03-03 Thread TheLastMan

Just to explain further what is happening. Using favourites is fine on
the web interface provided I don't user folders. As soon as I enter a
favorites folder it reverts to edit mode.

I have tried stopping and restarting SqueezeCenter but that behaviour
does not change. It looks like a bug to me. I cannot imagine why it
would be intentional.

I will have to wait until I get home to see how it looks on the
Controller. If it looks OK on the controller I will leave things as
they are as I only really use the web interface for organising things.
I use the controller almost exclusively when actually choosing music to
play.

Thanks for responding.

Re: [slim] Interesting Debate On Sonos

2010-03-03 Thread bobkoure

If the Touch has a mini-server built in (did I get that right?)... so
instant plug and play with non-local music sources, doesn't that change
the equation?

Either way, Logitech -really- needs to put together a runs out of the
box solution.
Fastest way to do it would be to buy the company that's now building an
integrated server solution, put it on some small-footprint platform,
wrapped in logitech plastic and logitech logos. Put a wireless
capability in it - so out of the box doesn't even require setting up a
wireless router - just attach an antenna. Make sure the base unit (or
whatever it's called) is labeled optional to not lose the current
customer base.
I'm pretty sure they could sell something like this well under the
Sonos. It would have the only one base unit per household advantage.

There are folks out there who really -prefer- a closed system. Look
at iPhones and, to a lesser extent, Macs. Yes, it costs more. Yes, it's
limiting. But the hardware/software combination, exactly as you are
buying it, just works. Big attraction there.
Many years ago, when I worked for Lotus, I spent some product liaison
time in Cupertiono. I saw JFW up on a lot of office walls. When I
finally asked, I was told it stood got Just Fu***ing Works. I could
see (then and now) how customers might value that over openness or
extensibility, or even over not having to throw away hardware when the
software advances - and even at a price premium.

I also wonder how much 'cognitive dissonance'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance) is involved - for
those folks who have invested heavily (time and/or money) in either
system. I certainly see some of it in Mac aficionados (more so years ago
when the Mac price premium was basically -huge-).

Yes, but that's how it is supposed to work when you don't sync the

Having the controller in the craddle for more then one hour is a very

Buying the company not an easy game neither the best solution when you
have this line of business already in-house.
And Logitech has done this already.
What Logitech should do is to get things better planned, developed and
what is extremely important tested before it goes into the market.
And Logitech knows how to do it right #8211; proved by the financial
results and market share and position.

What may be a bit missing #8211; the link to customer requirements and
match them into the product
This forum as well as the Bugszilla from Slim are providing the good
input.
And if some of those requirements were discussed with the users (I hope
they already do this) #8211; than the result should be coming soon.
The fixes and the list of issues users have shows that the testing is
not done in the best way.

e.g. one of German manufactures uses own employs to test cars before
they go to the market; they have big pool and most of people can get the
car to go to the canteen (2-3 km from some buildings) and by coming back
what they have to do is to write a report about the experience, and what
could be done in a different way #8211; by research people it was
confirmed to be one of key sources for innovations and quality/usability
improvements.

Logitech may do the same #8211; it should not be an issue to find good
and reliable community to work with
and I am pretty sure there would be enough people who would be able to
do the testing job right#8230;
but!
not just have fun, but also an obligation to really test and properly

be difficult (though not impossible) for people to change their minds.

I'm in my late 50s and still remember the reputations for reliability

the years some of those products (if they still exist) have gotten
better and others worse, but I still have to make a conscious effort to
get past my original impression.

The original SliMP3 came from the geek side of things almost a decade
ago and the product has always involved installing server software,
configuring a few ports, messing with routers and so on. Nothing
particularly hard once you've done it, but it can have the potential to
look intimidating. In any case, it is still more than remove from box,
plug in and press the play button.

So I believe SB suffers a bit more from reputation than reality. I'm
sure Logitech would like that reputation to evolve in the coming years.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-03-03 Thread Locuth

SlimControl is trying to talk CLI to your SqueezeCenter on port 9000.
But SqueezeCenter's CLI port is probably 9090.

You usually do not need to change the CLI-port setting in the
settings.

What you are seeing in the error log is the HTTP-Server repsonse.
It says something like what the hell are you talking about?
Or in other words This command is not allowed: goodby!

If run SqCntr on a PC its most definitly port 9090 for CLI.
Else check in server settings - information

Does that help?

 power it off.

The indicator is whether the main menu offers to Turn Den On or Turn
Den Off. :-)

The 'sole button on the Receiver'
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SBRFrontButtonAndLED) acts like a
Pause button, if pressed briefly. If you run Squeezebox Server, you can
use my 'KidsPlay plugin' (http://www.tux.org/~peterw/slim/KidsPlay.html)
to redefine the button on the Receiver as a Power button. So you could
just tap the Receiver's button and wait for it to turn off (go silent)
before switching off your amp. Also note that the brightness of the
light of the Receiver button indicates whether it's playing music.

Re: [slim] PDA controller solution

2010-03-03 Thread tims31

Hi Locuth,

I Had tried both 9090 and 9000 in the CLI settings but neither seem to
work. If i set to 9090 then I just get 'Logon failed'. I am using the
same login details as squeezebox on my PC and in my radio but still no
luck.

Any other ideas please?

If I uninstall and reinstall it remembers my details. Where is the
settings file kept so I can delete that and try a clean install.
(installed on storage card).

Thanks

[slim] Wireless signal drops every few seconds

2010-03-03 Thread liffy99

SB3 (kitchen) is driving me mad. All was fine a few weeks ago, now it
just loses connection repeatedly (and every time it's left alone for a
few hours).

I keep trying to get past the Waking up Slimserver / Connecting to
Slimserver bit, and setting up network connections from scratch (both
fixed and auto IP options) to no avail.

Today I managed to look at the wireless signal strength which
fluctuates between 58% and 70%. But, strangely, every 10-12 seconds
(might be every 11 spot on but without a stopwatch I can't be more
exact) the signal drops to 0%.

To my knowledge I've not added or changed any settings, nor added any
devices which might interfere (I know it doesn't like the microwave but
that's another story and very short term obviously). I've even turned
the fridge off but no change. The SB3 in the lounge works perfectly.

I've tried several different router channels to little effect.

Ideas ?
Thanks

Re: [slim] Wireless signal drops every few seconds

2010-03-03 Thread Mnyb

Why not switch places with the SB3's to see if the problem follows the
SB3 or if it is the location (wifi disturbances).

If it's following the SB3 try it wired to the router instead of wifi.

Iv'e never opened an SB3 some treads here suggest that the wifi card
could get loose under some circumstances ? worth to investigate.

The wifi card could also be broken, or the rest of the SB3 ?

One could also swap the wifi card between the SB3's ?
I've never tried this either, no idea if a bad wifi card can damage the
SB3 or if a bad SB3 can fry the wifi card.

Other forum members have repaired completely dysfunctional SB3 by
removing a faulty wifi card and then used it wired instead.
The original SB3 was sold in a version without wifi card, so it can
function without it.

[slim] Playlist with Chinese filenames?

2010-03-03 Thread wildgoose

I am having some trouble getting playlist to work on files with Chinese
names.

I am using foobar2000 to create the m3u playlist, which is basically a
text file that lists the individual files. This works fine for standard
English files, but it doesn't work for Chinese files. Squeezecenter
found the playlist, but the content is empty.

I open the m3u files in a text editor, and I see the complete filename
in Chinese, so the text file is written properly by foobar2000, but the
file is not read correctly by squeezecenter? I tried .m3u8 files in
foobar200 too, same result.

I am running 7.4.2 on a XP box. Chinese is working correctly on my
squeezebox v3, I can see the Chinese song name, as well as the Chinese
song info. Just the playlist feature is not working. (playlist feature
works for playlist that have only English filenames)

How many different playlist format does squeezecenter support? Is there
a better format I should be using for Chinese songs?

[slim] Playing downloaded Podcasts, Radio Shows and Audio Books

2010-03-03 Thread JJZolx

I recently downloaded some episodes from several radio shows, plus a
couple of audio books. Is there some plugin or other Squeezebox Server
mechanism for automatically saving your place and resuming playback at
the same point within an audio file?

The only thing I've found is to use pause, but I can only listen to a
single item, and not change between them and keep my place. For
example, I could be in the middle of chapter 5 of an audio book, want to
listen to a radio show, then return to the same place in the book at a
later time.

Re: [slim] SlimCtrl 1.3 out now

2010-03-03 Thread Locuth

Muele - Did I say I'd upload something today?!

Well it's a little more work than I thought.
So it'll be tomorrow before I can post an update.

But it's working fine. The complete albums list will be loaded much
much faster.
And the album-artist information will be added as you browse
individual albums.

For instance (on my PC) after browsing GENRE 'alternative' - 'all
albums'
22 albums are getting the additional 'album-artist information.

- am I still making sense - ?

Yes - I'm getting to bed too late again.
But I just want to have you satisfied.^^

Take care

Or just wait for it to be released and make temp copies in the meantime
as for example 24bit Flac they work perfectly with squeezebox.

7.5 is very beta, and uses a test server for mysqueezebox.com ( a new
acount is needed )

If you like things to just work I don't want to advice you to use a
beta. I just wanted to point out that the issue has been found and
fixed.
