Ok. Like this?

1:
cable modem (utility room) -> D-Link (kitchen) -> Linksys (another
room)

Or like this?

2:
cable modem (utility room) -> Linksys (another room) -> D-Link
(kitchen)

Ideally what you want is everything on one subnet. So you don't want
two routers. If #1 above is correct, then it sounds like you don't
need a router in this room. If you need to connect multiple wired PCs
and devices then you only need a network switch in this room. (If
there's only a single device, you could just run an ethernet cable from
the D-Link located in the kitchen.) If #2 is correct then you want to
use the D-Link only as a wireless access point and not a router. To do
that:

- Use the Linksys as your DHCP server. Disable the DHCP server in the
D-Link.

- Connect the D-Link to the Linksys by connecting between one its LAN
ports (not the WLAN or 'Internet' port) to one of the LAN ports on the
Linksys.

The D-Link should end up with a 192.168.0.x address and everything
attached to it should also. You may want to give the Linksys a static
IP address in its configuration so that you can always find it easily.
If the D-Link is 192.168.0.1, try using 192.168.0.2 for the Linksys,
which will most likely be outside of the DHCP address pool being
assigned dynamically.

You need to rethink on having two routers and likely buy a cheap wi-fi

Re: [slim] Networking

2010-05-01 Thread Spooler111

Its a physical location issue.

The cable line comes into the house in the utility room which is not
conducive to setting up a wireless router. This is also where the
network distribution cables converge. As a result, I need to take the
output from the cable modem in two directions - one goes to my kitchen
where the first SB is. The other goes to the wireless router in another
room which in turn is connected to my computer and a second SB.

Re: [slim] Networking

2010-05-01 Thread JJZolx

What are you trying to accomplish with the two routers? Sounds like an
attempt at isolating the wifi network for security purposes.

In your configuration (assuming default router setups), devices on the
.1 network should be able to contact those on the .0 network with no
problem. But those on the .0 network will be blocked from contacting
anything on the .1 network. Devices on the .0 network would be
considered "outside" by the Linksys router, and treated as though they
were on the Internet and potentially hostile.

If the Linksys permits it, you could perhaps open up a hole in the
router's firewall permitting all traffic to/from the IP address of the
SB3 on .0 network. That will allow the SB3 to 'see' the internal
network, but I doubt that Squeezebox/Server discovery will work across
the subnets. Most likely, you'd have to configure the server address
manually on the SB3.

If you're not trying some kind of funky security thing with the two
routers, then you could just eliminate the Linksys and place everything
on the D-Link. If you really must used two devices for logistical
reasons, then the thing you might do is place the D-Link behind the
Linksys and truly configure the D-Link as a wireless access point,
where it and its wifi devices are on the same subnet as devices
connected to the Linksys.

Code:

  cable_modem
  |-- Linksys
  |-- D-Link
  |~~ SB3
  |-- SB3
  |-- Computer

What is providing the route from your 192.168.1/24 to your 192.168.0/24
networks? and vice versa?

Most home users have only a single subnet in the house.

I have been a SB3 user for several years with few issues until today
when I had to reset my router. Now I have problem. I have searched
forums and found similar issues but either I don't fully understand the
proper fix or the issue isn't exactly the same. Anyway here is the
issue:

I have a cable modem connected to a wireless Dlink router (basically
set up as an access point). This Dlink is connected to an SB3 as well
as another router (Linksys). The Linksys is connected to my computer
and a second SB3. The second SB3 works fine, but the one connected to
the Dlink is not working. When I try to set up the non functional SB3 I
can get an ip address, but it will not connect to the network. FYI the
ip address of the Dlink is 192.168.0.1. The Linksys is 192.168.1.1
(this router has DHCP turned off).

What's the sense in filling out a survey and conveying the impression
that you've gotten from reading the forums? If you're not having any
problems, then isn't that the message you should convey?

There are many hundreds of bugs in the software, but if the project
were shut down tomorrow my Squeezeboxes would continute to do just
about everything that I ask of them. The software catalogs my FLAC
library and plays it back on all of my Squeezeboxes flawlessly.

Yes, I noticed they tend to change stuff. Even from 7.4.2 to 7.5, I had
to make a change to account for some minor difference. Let's hope that
they're least moving towards a more consistent and logical layout.

The only test I did with MySB was to just point my app to it to see if
worked, it didn't. I haven't really looked at what I'm getting back
from MySB.

Writing the app pretty much zapped a month of my life, and I'm a little
burned out with it. I'll definitely shoot you an email when I start to
really look into it.

A script would be the good way to do it, but I've done this using
mp3tag's "actions". mp3tag is excellent Windows freeware from
www.mp3tag.de (be sure to get the one from the .de site, as there is
another program with the same name that is not as good.

In mp3tag use
Convert >
Actions >
New Action >
give the action a name >
New >
Replace >
Field _FILENAME >
Original [accented character]
Replace with [unaccented character]
select Case-sensitive comparison
click OK

Repeat those last few steps for all of the relevant letters with acute
accents, grave accents, umlauts, circumflexes, and yes, upside down
question marks. It's a little tedious to set this up, but less tedious
than doing the files one-by-one. Then highlight a file and run the
action on it. Do it with just a few files at first to make sure it is
doing what you expected.

When you're done with the filenames, do it for the directory names too
if necessary.

No problem!

Make sure you are holding down option (on mac) or alt (on windows) when
you start iTunes. This will bring up a prompt to let you choose where
your iTunes library file is. Browse to your nas folder where you copied
this to and select it. iTunes will now load using this library file.

As mentioned before, you may have to remove your music and rescan it
(can't rememberas I did this a while ago).

Regardng ripping, you need to alter the iTunes settings so it rips to
the music folder on your nas.

That should be you soreted.

Hope this helps

[slim] Received Logitech survey request

2010-05-01 Thread usbethjim

I received an email invitation to complete a Logitech survey concerning
my "Squeezebox Classic". Just want to let y'all know that I said the
hardware was great but that maybe more resources(time & money)should be
dedicated to perfecting/updating/clearing all bugs in the "free"
software that makes it all run. I suggested that maybe punching out
hardware was moving a little faster than punching out the corresponding
software. Then I did the survey again for every Squeeze device I own,
paying special attention to the initial (permanent? OK, talk amongst
yourselves...) problems of the Duet being pushed out the door
?prematurely? with the customer base providing the beta test bed for
the hardware/software.

Does that sum up what I've read on these forums? I myself had initial
issues with the Duet but now it seems to work nicely. Be on the look
out for this survey

The "noscan"-link is only necessary/useful when running without SBS.
Have you tried that? Log on to MYSB.com, put in a favorite link

Re: [slim] Announce: New Squeezeslave 0.9 Release available on sourceforge

2010-05-01 Thread rperre

Ralphy, thank you for the information on adding to the .asoundrc

i have 2 different USB Audio devices, i know from specifications that 1
of the cards supports up to 48kHz and is at least 16bit, so it should
work.

aplay -l shows the USB device as Card 1 and there is only 1 device "0"

So i added the info to the .asoundrc first (changed the hw to hw:1,0),
but still it doesn't show up in squeezeslave -L then i tried to add is
to /etc/asound.conf and same thing. Am i using the wrong hw data?

Code:

# dmix must attach to the hw device :(
  pcm.dmix-digital-hw {
  type dmix
  ipc_key 1235
  slave {
  pcm "hw:1,0"
  period_time 0
  period_size 1024
  buffer_size 8192
  rate 44100
  }
  }

then you said use squeezeslave -o to play through this device, it
should first show up in squeezeslave -L, am i correct?

if i would only use 1 usb device it would work because i can make the
usb the default card and use the internal for squeezeslave, but this
defeats the purpose of what i'm trying to do (running multiple
instances on multiple usb audio cards)

Really appreciate the help on this,

Richard

Since becoming an addict, I've hosted a few parties here in North
London. We had the music synched to 3 areas, plus the kids playing
their own choices on a boom in a 4th using a friends iphone as a
controller ( thanks Pippin!)
The effect on people new to this stuff is amazing. I think Logitech
should be prepared for a surge in sales in this area!
Now if only someone could sort out a plugin for parties, so that
inebriated fat fingers cannot inadvertently wipe out a playlist. (Hello
Erland?)

Re: [slim] DSBridge - A simpler way to stream Spotify

2010-05-01 Thread Erik L

Hi,

DSBridge used to work nicely for me, but recently I cannot start it any
longer. I always get the message "Connect timed out: Bad file
descriptor".
Does anybody have a clue to what may be wrong?

I once managed to get it going again. I think I deleted all the added
files in the Spotify directory, deleted the Spotify favorite and did
everything from the beginning and fiddled around for a while, and it
started to work again. But a few days later I get this error message
again, and now it does not help to do everything from the beginning
again, including to clear all preferences and cache.

I have also tried the /#slim:noscan=1 setting, but no difference. (When
it used to work I did not use this addition.)

/Erik

Re: [slim] What do you do with CD inserts?

2010-05-01 Thread garym

I use jewelsleeves and stackable 3 drawer cabinets. Each holds about
1000 CDs, and the sleeve holds both front and back of CD insert with no
cutting.

ditto, on not doing anything with the cardboard/special CD packages.
Yes, harder to find CD, but hopefully, I'll NEVER need to find given
that I've ripped to FLAC and have lots of backups of my data.

Find the line

Code:

jiveMain:registerSkin(self:string("DESKTOP_SKIN"), 'FullscreenSkin', 'skin')

in the file -FullscreenSkinMeta.lua- and uncomment it. Be warned though
that it is disabled for a reason. For example, the Now Playing screen
doesn't work, which makes the skin mostly useless. But you are welcome
to roll up your sleeves and fix it. ;)

I guess I have a couple of questions:
1. Could you expand on how you configured iTunes to now expect to find
its database files on your ReadyNAS media share?
2. Having reconfigured things in this way, are you still able to use
iTunes to successfully rip a CD and store the output in your iTunes
library?

Re: [slim] SBS & iTunes integration on a ReadyNAS

2010-05-01 Thread yannyb

I've got a readynas duo set-up that I recently added a squeezebox duet
and radio to. I was previously using xbmc but decided I wanted rid of
the big ugly xbox in my lounge and to get a more usable controller
(XBMC is brilliant though!).

I have all my mp3s in a music folder under the media share on my
ReadyNAS.

I copied my itunes library files (there are a few - iTunes Library
.itl/.xml and the itdb files for extras/genius) into the music folder
as well.

The next time I launched itunes I held down option (alt on windows) and
pointed itunes to the new library location. (from memory I had to
remove the music tracks and rescan in the music from the new location -
it was a long time ago that I did this part)

this basically means that your music and itunes library are now held on
your NAS which means SBS can see them both.

When you set-up squeezebox server you need to activate the itunes
plugin and then go to the settings page for this. you need to :

check Use iTunes
empty the ignored playlists section (at least for the types of playlist
you want to include)
point it to your library location
Point it to where your media is (my music folder)
if you want, set a prefix for your imported itunes playlists

Additionally, you need to set how long SBS waits before it rescans your
itunes library after it changes. I've left mine at the default of 3600
seconds for the meantime.

When you click apply the scanner will start and a few minuted later
you'll be able to see progress on the information page.

What I found wasn't working was saving playlists I created on my
squeezebox - they appeared to save but basically went into a black
hole. I appear to have fixed this by going to the Basic Settings page
and entering a location for playlists (I set it to
/media/Music/Playlists). They now seem to be working fine!

I've only had this setup for a week or two so I'm sure I'll find some
oddities over time but so far so good.

I've attached some screenshots of my settings.

Cheers

Yes, squeezeslave does open wasapi devices in exclusive mode.

I'd expect to see sync work better using wasapi. I've also made a few
changes to the slimprotocol handling that should help in this area as
well.

Adding -H to your command line options should improve sync even a bit
more. Requires r155 or higher.

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox control app for Palm webOS devices

2010-05-01 Thread wt0

I'm guessing the part you don't understand are the 'plus' buttons and
the down arrow buttons.
The plus buttons adds the item to the playlist.

The down arrows opens a drawer under the item to show other options for
the item. Basically the same as pressing the plus key on a SB
Controller.

The 'plus' buttons with a little down arrow combines the two functions.
A tap adds to the playlist. Tap and hold opens the drawer.
