Re: [slim] OFFTOPIC: Linux problem on my SC server?

2010-06-07 Thread jimwillsher

Hi all,

I really appreciate all the replies to my message. But regardless of
whether I use apt-get or aptitude, and safe-upgrade or upgrade or
dist-upgrade, I get these messages about Invalid argument etc. Even
on a clean install.

My Ubuntu install is running under Hyper-V, so I'm absolutely confident
that there's no disk problem etc. I've used Hyper-V for a couple of
years, with 9.04, 9.10 and now 10.04, and this is the first time I've
ever encountered any problems.

Heeelll please :-)

Re: [slim] 760 WJR Detroit not Streaming

2010-06-07 Thread bpa

Because they have changed from using MP3 to AAC which is not supported
by Boom when using mysb.com - you need a local SBS server to transcode.

Development of new firmware feature for Boom has stopped but for a long
time there has not been enough space in the older ip3k based player's
firmware for new feature and so AAC format cannot be supported.

[[Category:Edit Needed]] in the page and after that it will show up
 here:
 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Category:Edit_Needed

It might also be useful to add some kind of information regarding
what's incorrect, for example like I did earlier on this page:
 http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/PluginSettings

This has been on my 'learn how to' list for a while, so I'll give it a
go.

I think that there a couple of fundamental issues (aside from the
parallel forums):-

1) there are parallel FAQ's at
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/439/5745?selectedcrid=439selectedcid=5745WT.z_sp=Productosid=bit=
which presents a maintenance and search overhead
2) these forums act as substitute support and save lazy/unaware people
from searching by letting them post questions and get answers (a good
service for them and provided by free from the many dedicated
enthusiasts, but think what more those enthusiasts coudl acheieve if
not answering repeat questions).
3) many 'fixes' are frequently reposted, or threads are used as answers
which undermines any wiki
4) my personal experience is that searching the forums is more likely
to get relevant information than the wiki. I am not sure if this is the
search enginer, the tagging or simply the volume of material available.

Perhaps critical mass on the wiki (or FAQ?) is necessary to get over
the perception hump (or actually these fix a huge number of problems
that are therefore invisible).

2010-06-07 Thread jonheal

Hi Jon. I read your post here and your description on theheals.org with
a keen interest in doing the same thing. I have an XP/SP3 server
running squeezeserver 7.4. What exactly do I do with the SBstatus
folder I downloaded (after unzipping)? I gather that I need to run
Windows Media 11 in order to run a UPnP server, but I am looking for
slimmer alternatives. Finally, my SB3 sits across the room from us, so
I am looking at larger frames. Have you tried any others beside
 pandigital?

I should update the description of the project on my web site as I had
to put a fair amount of further work into the project to get it
reliable. Namely, I had to create a second program that I run as a
Windows Service that constantly monitors connectivity to the frame. It
turns out the Pandigital frame is a little flaky over a wireless
connection. My service reboots it when it looses connectivity. I also
took the frame apart and embedded an IR emitter in it so IR Blaster can
send it commands to get through all the menu clicks that are required to
navigate to the cover images.

To answer your other questions, I ended up spending 30 bucks for Twonky
Media Server. I think I tried every UPnP server for Windows that's out
there. Twonky worked the best in my opinion.

I'm still on version 6.3.1 of Slimserver and have no plans to upgrade.
So I'm not sure what the impact would be using a more recent version.

I tried no other frames other than the Pandigital, but I suppose any
that can access UPnP servers are candidates. You need to find one
though that is constantly monitoring the shared folder for changed
files. Some don't.

I will update the source files and project description on my web site
over the next few days. I would be very surprised if anyone else could
get them working out of the box. Like I said at the outset, this
project was a kluge, and highly tailored to my specific setup. But the
source files might give you some ideas anyway. :-)

[slim] Firewall setup for internet radio

2010-06-07 Thread maf

How do you setup your router's firewall for Squeezebox internet radio
access?

My firewall is running a Deny-all strategy. I already have opened ports
3483 and 9000 for outgoing connections. But internet radio station seem
to use all kinds of ports. In my firewall's log files, I found
references to port numbers from as low as 824 up to 31115. Not opening
those station-specific ports results in Connect timed out: Transport
endpoint is not connected. messages.

Somewhat reluctantly, I guess I could open that whole port range for
connections originating at IP addresses assigned to my Squeezebox
hardware in the local network. But I definitely would not want to open
the same port range for my desktop running SqueezeSlave.

So, how should I configure my router's firewall?

Thanks, Malte

Re: [slim] Firewall setup for internet radio

2010-06-07 Thread snarlydwarf

A bit paranoid?

There's no predicting what port someone will run a music stream on.
Often it's just a plain old http url, but sometimes they will run
several ports to increase session count or provide multiple different
streams.

It would be easiest to allow the SB's to initiate anything they wanted
to the outside world: it's not like the older models have enough memory
to even think about running spamming software (not to mention it would
be tricky to get it on there) and opening sessions started from an
'inside' machine are nowhere near as dangerous as allowing outsiders
in... restricting inside machines completel is nigh impossible if they
need to be usable: darned near anything can be tunnelled over https,
for example, and blocking 443 would cripple most PC usage.

Is whatever you're using for a router able to distinguish between
'established' connections?

In psuedofirewallese:
allow from internal - external
allow from external - internal established
deny all

I guess it is, but I'm not sure. The router is a LANCOM DSL/I-10+
running LANCOM 7.80. It has a 'stateful inspection' firewall. At least
for well known protocols it seems to be able to monitor the connection
and learn about additional channels opened during the exchange.

All I have to do is to specify what connections I would like to allow
using combinations of local and/or remote stations and protocols...

[slim] Syncing Problems -

2010-06-07 Thread shane732

I currently have a squeezebox classic and a squeezebox radio. Currently
both of them are working over a wifi network (i.e. neither of them are

When I try to sync the two of them it's awful. The songs stop playing

What's the problem with them or is this just the way it is when syncing

Should I wire one of them to the router?

Probably.

Your wireless router will say something about how cool it is that it
can stream 54Mbps or some such, which is way more than you need...

But it leaves out important details: as part of the connection process,
both sides monitor the link and adjust according to what they see as
noise. And, if there is noise, data gets dropped and has to
retransmit... which makes for rebuffering issues.

Wireless is a nice idea, and works mostly but is subject to sharing
the same channels as everyone else (your neighbor's wireless, baby
monitors, intercoms, alarm systems, microwave ovens, tv extenders and
all the other junk lives in the same area).

There are a couple things you can do: wire as much as you can.
Especially make sure the link between your server and the router is
wired. Just wiring this one link will cut your usage of the wifi range
by 50%. If you can wire the other devices, go for it.

You may also want to change your wireless channel on the router: most
routers come defaulted to channel 6. Which means most of your
neighbors probably left it there and they are on channel 6, too... Try
1 or 11, as far from them as possible so you won't get their data which
will seem like just noise to you.

The same transcoding happens for all older Squeezeboxes (i.e. SB1, SB2,
SB3/Classic, Transporter, Boom) so if it works for SB3 then it will
work for Boom. Transcoding results in a Flac stream which will have
higher bandwidth requirments so maybe a wireless issue is happening.

What is the problem station ?

Re: [slim] Help me get 500 ft away from router

2010-06-07 Thread bobkoure

I've found incorrectly wired (wrong order) on a couple of sites. Data
rate goes to hell - and it's not obvious, right off, what's wrong as,
if you use a cable continuity tester, the lights light on both ends. in
proper order. BUT ethernet over unshielded twisted pair ONLY works if Rx
is on one pair and Tx is on another (doesn't matter which pairs, so long
as it's the same on both ends - but they have to actually be -pairs- -
the pairs of wires that are twisted around each other).
If you're not sure what you're doing, then, by all means, stick to the
standard. 568B, as Pat mentions, is a good way to go.

If you didn't have your wiring setup this way, I'd suggest crimping on
a couple of plugs and testing before looking for shorter routes or
cutting cable.
As I'd mentioned earlier, I've had a few 400' runs work fine at 10bt
full duplex. So if it still doesn't work, I'd still look for a way to
force the speed down to 10. This will be plenty fast enough for your
squeezebox.
