Re: [slim] Toggle Alarm on / off with commandline?

2010-12-09 Thread Pascal Hibon

Managing your alarms would be a lot easier by using a remote such as
iPeng on your iPod Touch or iPhone. This way you don’t even need
different alarms for different times (only one will do) and it is very
easy for you switch them on and off and adjust the alarm time.

Since iPeng for iPad has somewhat flexible screen savers it looks like
a good idea to add an additional one for the song text.

For documentation of the CLI go to the server's web interface:

A way to remind you every night is to setup an event in your iPhone
calendar. It is possible to make it recurring (every night) and to
alert you.
I know this is not what you were asking about either but I think it
will be easier than creating a script that toggles alarms on and off by
using CLI commands.

those broadcasting companies just were interested in taking my money
and providing me with the service I want, we could get a really nice TV
experience. In the next second you realize that this is not going to
happen any time soon, because in the same way as the music and movie

they can't see the possibilities.

I would be willing to pay a lot for a supported solution that provided
similar functionality as my MythTV box with a nice user friendly
interface, unfortunately no one is interested to provide it to me.

Fortunately, my current MythTV box works fairly good as long as I only
want to see SD content. Most HD content in Sweden only works on
officially authorized cable boxes that obviously don't have the
features of MythTV.

ahh yes, erland. the sad reality is that even with the lessons learned
from the demise of the music industry there remains a total lack of
vision and foresightedness in these media companies. How that's
possible is beyond me but i agree that if they would simply provide a
high quality option of streaming ALL of their content online, millions
of folks just like myself would gladly pay them for it.

I will stay with my mac mini home theater that allows me to run boxee,
hulu, and firefox. these are currently the three apps necessary to see
as much streaming programming as exists on the web.

AppleTV and the revue are both limiting so the simple advice is to
avoid and ignore.

Well, since I work for a Broadcast TV station

It's all very complicated and ugly. What do you do about the local
affiliates... broadcast TV is paid for with advertisers, some are
national, some are local. If ABC puts something online, then the local
affiliate (and the local advertisers) are cut out of the picture. And
perhaps I'm odd, but I sometimes like local ads. (We have a local
hardware store that has absolutely brilliant ads...)

If local TV vanishes because everyone is getting network shows off the
'net, then where does the Local News come from? Networks aren't going
to care about why one local electric utility has not one, or two, but
THREE rate increases scheduled for the next year... Or who the new
mayor is, etc.

I'm personally more interested in what is happening locally than
whether some sheik is having wild sex parties or wasting 40 minutes of
60 Minutes gabbing about Facebook changing what profile pages look
like...

The danger I see is the reverse of your fear: Television will become
like Radio: catering to the lowest common denominator. Why bother with
quality expensive-to-produce shows when you can make more money with the
Justin Bieber Christmas Special and other garbage. You don't need to
fill out 3 hours of prime time any more: just have a slew of pablum,
and let people watch Bieber 3 times a night.

It may look like freedom to choose what you watch, but the Giant Media
Conglomerates will determine your choices. Your choice will be That
Which Is Profitable. Independence is out the window: if it can't get
a million views it's not worth it.

It will be Radio of the 80's all over again, except marketed as choice.

The local TV broadcasters are toast. Their franchise (monopoly) is based
on old technology, and its simply being replaced. As is the whole
concept of a TV network or that House shows on Monday at 8PM.

If local TV vanishes because everyone is getting network shows off the

Sorry, that argument doesn't fly. For decades, all that is on local TV

of places to get weather and sports, and we don't need constant drum

[slim] The Squeezebox is dead... long live the Squeezebox

So after 5 years, several house moves and general abuse my Classic has
died (endless rebooting cycle which my troubleshooting-fu has failed to

Am I crazy for buying another Classic instead of a Touch?!

I gather the sound quality from the Touch is better (I've got a touch
of tinnitus and ageing ears anyway!). Not fussed about the touch
screen. A colour screen would look a bit weird right next to the
television, whilst I love the VFD display and general form factor of
the Classic. Of course, a warranty on the 'new' Classic is out the
question so it's fingers crossed on this point.

I'm not meaning to start a tedious Classic vs Touch thread - I can see
the Touch is a 'better' product (although not quite a like-for-like
replacement in my view)... I just felt a bit sad when I found out the
Classic wasn't officially for sale anymore (no, I don't manage to visit
these forums regularly enough otherwise I'd have known this ages ago -
but the Classic generally worked too well to need to!).

It's not a coincidence I also drive a 10 year old car ;)

People want easy access to media. The itunes store has proven that. So
now we are moving from music to video due to technological

Ease of use? I think you're very wrong there. Content is what people
want, not I'll watch Desperate Housewives because it's easy.

(And I don't believe ITMS is a good thing: it promotes the Justin
Biebers of the world, not innovation or talent. Homogenization is
great for keeping milk safe, it is horrible for culture.)

(To be clear, I don't work in the TV business per se... I work for a TV
broadcaster, but I do networking and never touch video unless it's an
m4v in a video element...)

as soon as someone makes a Hulu type product that allows viewers to
easily pick what they want to watch when they want to watch it and on
whatever tv they want to watch it on then it is as good as done.

And as soon as someone convinces content producers that is a good
business model. Most people do not want to pay 99c to watch an episode
of CSI. Do the math and for all the complaints about omg cable costs
so much, well, it would cost a ton more if you paid per show, and you
can bet you will either have to do that, or you will not be allowed to
FFWD through ads.

The content will be paid for somehow or it will simply not exist.

The most bland content will be promoted. Steve Jobs will tell us all
how he is protecting us from danger by avoiding any controversy, and
the American public (and probably the rest of the world...) will be
happy because they never have to see programming that will make them
think.

The old model of letting some giant conglomerate tell me when and where
i can watch my entertainment and at the same time charging me a fortune
for that dictatorship is nearly dead.

I don't see that as being the current state: you can either watch
broadcast TV, where you do NOT get to choose when a show is aired, but
the content is subsidized by ads, or you can get cable where it is a
mix, or various on demand services from Dish/Comcast/Netflix where you
can choose when things are shown but pay a premium for that

I have no idea what dictatorship you are talking about where you are
simultaneously paying for content -and- have no choice about viewing
time unless you're talking about PPV sporting events.

local programming will survive just like movies survived tv and
videotape and later dvd's. i could care less if i watch local
programming on the web or through a cable box or rabbit ears.

Except if your dollars all go to network... and not to the local
station, then you will not get local programming.

the core problem is that people are always afraid of change and I think

I think you're wrong about choice. You will have LESS choice. Your

the Touch is a 'better' product (although not quite a like-for-like
replacement in my view)... I just felt a bit sad when I found out the
Classic wasn't officially for sale anymore (no, I don't manage to visit
these forums regularly enough otherwise I'd have known this ages ago -
but the Classic generally worked too well to need to!).

 It's not a coincidence I also drive a 10 year old car ;)

nothing wrong with the classic as replacement (if you can find one).

Re: [slim] Hail Mary time for Logitech with its Google TV?

2010-12-09 Thread exile

snarlydwarf, you're a funny guy.

i love how you refute everything I say. nice.

i think one point that we both can agree on is that while most of
television already caters to the lowest common denominator-
i.e.-anything on E! network, quality tv is still to be found-i.e-
almost anything on HBO.

if there's an audience for quality tv, then it will continue. and it
will continue in whatever medium delivers the product.

and it can be debated whether getting local programming is a good thing
but rest assured local tv folks will figure out a way to continue
providing a horrendously crappy product which is local news. those
traffic reports that serve about 10 people in a community of millions
will keep on coming because the sales department will always find a
local sponsor to slap a logo in the corner of the traffic helicopter
shot.

Snarly exile,
Very interesting comments. I'd love to get your thoughts on the future
of the network + affiliate business model. I have no broadcasting
background nor knowledge of the biz so

Of the four national OTA networks in the US, do you think one or two
may decide to exit the affiliate (local OTA) business model and go to
strictly subscription based (cable or sat) broadcasting in the next
decade? The networks are paying local stations to broadcast their
programs while the cable sat companies are paying the network for the
same programming.

Approximately 90% of the networks viewers are seeing network programing
via cable/sat which generates $$$ to the network.
Whereas approximately 10% of the networks viewers see network
programming via OTA local affiliates which costs the network $$$.

Assuming I understand how the network + affiliate business works, seems
crazy to bother with paying to reach 10% of my customers when 90% of my
customers come from a source that pays me.

Thanks.

Well yes the Touch is better, but you're in luck if you still like the
Classic look as it is still available from several sources including
Amazon.

I drive a 10yr old car too, but plan to buy a Touch next time one is on
sale.I love the squeezebox whole line up, but would prefer the
higher bit rate capability for my old but high end home stereo :)

Your information is dated. Local doesn't make their money from network
now.

Local pays network and gets X minutes of ads per hour to cover that
cost.

(Stupid? Yes.. the old business model made a ton more sense to me...)

Approximately 90% of the networks viewers are seeing network programing

Cable/Sat companies now routinely pay local affiliates (yes, again, I
think that's dumb .. and right now it's renegotiation time, where
everyone tries to get cable/satellite companies to pay them more...).
Again, network doesn't pay local any more... the tables on that have
turned in the last 10 years or so.

Cable/Dish have their own problems as people find it harder and harder
to justify spending $50 or more for service given the economy (and that
HDTV is easier to get ota...).

I don't think Comcast would be thrilled if everyone cancelled their TV
service and streamed video on Comcast internet service... their pricing
model would then change...

2010-12-09 Thread EricBergan

I went through the same thing a few weeks ago. Ended up going with the
Touch because it turned out to only be a little more than getting a
Classic.

I use coax digital out, so can't say I really notice an audio
difference (and I'm usually fairly discriminating on audio.) Also, my
SB is in a closed audio cabinet, so the color display/touch screen is
really a non-issue for me.

Now, I'm not sure I made the right choice. Because I went with the
Touch, had to upgrade the version of my server, and I lost direct IR
remote control of favorites. So I've actually taken a step backwards in
user friendliness. There are a couple of other areas where I think the
settings on the Touch has been dumbed down from the classic, although
none as serious.

But nevertheless, there is room for improvements due to the higher

So I will check a new tab version, as soon as it comes out.

2010-12-09 Thread exile

toby10, i think you're right in that the networks relationship with the
affiliates needs to change.

People are watching the networks programming because its a popular
branded item. I think most folks could care less if those network shows
are attached to a local affiliate.

The local stations will need to take into account how people are going
to be watching tv product in the near future.

At the same time, companies like comcast should also be prepared for
the shift. I've yet to meet a person who thinks that the current cable
tv structure is a good thing. 500 channels? why? most people watch
between 3-5 networks of tv regularly.

change is gonna come either way. it would be unfortunate if the tv biz
went down the same path as the music biz.

Hi,

i bought a new classic a month ago (amazon) to have a spare in case.
anyway , i bought an amplifier and speakers , so i have a system in the
basement.

my main classic ( slimdevice) is also behind glasses , in ethernet
bridge mode for a wd tv live plus. ( so the classic 'share' is wireless
mode ).

if i changed for the touch, i would have to
change the server version
lose the bridge mode

Nice point :) But I've done the equivalent of running a 10 year old car
into the ground and replaced it with the same model and age of car
that's hardly been run in :) (and saved a bit of money too...)

Tongue-in-cheek somewhat, but I'm not often convinced that new=better
when it comes to consumer electronics these days - so many corners seem
to get cut bringing a product to market at the right price. Afterall, it
happened with the SB3 when it came out (many people had their fair share
of problems initially), but with a solid hardware platform, upgradable
firmware, open source software development and a small responsible
company looking after it all meant that, for me, the SB3 is perfect :)

Re: [slim] The Squeezebox is dead... long live the Squeezebox

 Is this correct?

 1. No wifi bridge? (It's useful but I can live without it)
 2. No static ip? (I can use the router to set it but)
 3. No ir-blaster? (This is a showstoper)

If it is, will it ever be implemented?

No one knows, Logitech no longer gives us any indications on what they
plan to do in the future. My guess is that Logitech won't do it, but
it's only a guess.

I'm not sure if the above mentioned features is limited by the hardware
or software, if it's the software (which I suspect) there is always the
possibility that some third party developer is interested in doing it.

Aren't there other solutions for IR blasters ?
Do you really need the Squeezebox to handle this ?

I can only talk for myself but I can honestly say that I would never
want to switch my Touch to the old Classic (which now mostly just acts
as a simple clock). Assuming you are running a local computer with SBS,
I think most people owning a Touch is pretty happy with how it works.
Sure, it has lost some features in comparison to the Classic but it has
also added better sound, a color screen and some other things. The
built-in server in the Touch doesn't work reliably for a lot of users,
so I personally don't consider that to be an added feature that should
affect the purchase decision.

Re: [slim] Resume on power on

2010-12-09 Thread stevecross

Thanks, the item i found that works is a power down unit, i can get it
it turn on by pressing the squeezebox remote power on button. So
basically when i press the power on on my squeezebox it powers up the
actual squeezebox unit as well as my amp but sometimes the squeezebox
is off so, when i then press the power on button again it turns it all
off, i really need it to be told by the server to always be on. I have
an amp connected to the power down plug as well so when i press power
on remote it powers on all my system.

I haven't found another way to control the volume on my amp with SBS
GUI or iPeng.
