[slim] Looking for a SB Boom alternative / replacement
Hi everyone ! First I'd like to say that I'm a big fan of Slimdevices and I loved my squeezeboxes (one Boom and one Classic), I recommended them to some of my friends and will probably do it again. However, every good thing comes to an end, and for various reasons I'd like to replace them. The Classic in my living room is in the process of being replaced by an HTPC (which used to host the squeezebox server) with xbmc and spotify. However, I can't seem to find a decent replacement for the Boom, so I thought maybe you guys would have some ideas, here's what I need : - Something with good sound quality (I could live with slightly lower SQ than the Boom) - Which can play music from the network, preferably using uPnP. - Which can reliably serve as an alarm clock to wake me and my gf up (so several alarms needed, snooze button, unobstrusive screen...) The Spotify app works fine but if I can get the dsbridge to work, I would buy more Squeezeboxes for my home :) If I put that adress in my Opera webbrowser I get sound for a second. Could it be a port problem? That's the only thing I haven't been able to check (don't know how, I've looked but can't find it in Norton). Edit: I think I've found the port thing in Norton but it didn't solve the problem :/ Edit2: I did a port forward in my router, I used my PCs IP adress, that's correct isn't it? Didn't work with either IP adress though :/ Edit3: I can connect and get sound on my iphone if I connect to http://192.168.1.12:8124/ no problem at all... You have correctly diagnosed that this will be down to a software firewall on your computer (Norton or the Windows firewall). I think you will find this will work if you disable the Norton firewall and the Windows firewall completely. I don't use a software firewall as the one in my Router is enough to block any external attacks. All the Norton firewall is doing in your system is stopping your computer from connecting to other computers and SqueezeBoxes in your network. Software firewalls are pointless for fixed computers sitting behind a router. They have a use in a laptop where you are connecting to wi-fi hot-spots but not otherwise. If you have a Radio or Touch, as of yesterday, you can now get Spotify Premium as a supported SqueezeBox App (hurray!). However, if you want the free version you will still need to sort out DSBridge. Unfortunately those, like me, with older SqueezeBoxes still have to use either DSBridge or Triode's Spotify plugin. Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback arrives on iPad: SqueezePad 1.7.0 released
SqueezePad 1.7.1 was just released to the AppStore. This is a release with loads of small small improvements and bugfixes. Before I list them all, don't miss the opportunity to vote about the priorities of next features in SqueezePad v1.8+ here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83106 v1.7.1 - you can tap (or hold) the volume icons in the top bar for finetuning volume - IRBlaster integration: tapping the volume icons now works together with the IRBlaster plugin (if installed on your server) - volume handling is improved: When you changed the volume very fast, SqueezePad sent too many volume-change events to the server resulting into delayed volume changes. - playback: SqueezePad integrates tightly with AirPlay (for details, please read my blog http://www.squeezepad.com/2011/01/squeezepad-and-airplay-this-is-how-it-works/) - playback: playback now also works with authenticated servers (before there was only a 'No Audio Data Found' error) - playback: there were rare reports, that SqueezePad played noise after a longer listening session (could be fixed by restarting the track). This should be resolved now. - playback: SqueezePad some times didn't suspend in the background, when there was a playback error message before. - settings: one couldn't change the texts in the settings-screen anymore, after playback was activated - settings: if you manually configure a DynDNS-URL on the settings screen this won't be replaced anymore by the automatic server detection. - some users reported problems with the In-App-Purchase (nothing happened when hitting the button). There is now a better error message and error recovery in place. - playback purchase is not available anymore for MySB.com only users. - SqueezePad doesn't crash anymore in the albums or artist menu, when you have an artist called '@' (cool bug, ey? ) - users of triodes Spotify plugin should update the plugin to the latest version and try streaming again. SqueezePad 1.7.2 will follow soon with some more nice enhancements :D -- bluegaspode Big Screen for great Boxes available now at your AppStore: *'Squeezebox + iPad = SqueezePad ' (www.squeezepad.com)* - -now featuring streaming to iPad!- Want to see a Weather Forecast on your Radio/Touch/Controller ? = why not try my 'Weather Forecast Applet' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=73827) Want to use the Headphones with your Controller ? = why not try my 'Headphone Switcher Applet' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67139) Setup: 1x SB-Controller+Receiver (Duet), 1xSB-Boom. 2xSB-Radio Server (7.5.1) running on SheevaPlug (Ubuntu) with attached Western Digital MyBook Essential. bluegaspode's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31651 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84100 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Spotify (officially) on SqueezeboxServer?
I couldn't care less about record companies making money. It's all the customer-unfriendly politics they are doing that annoys me to hell: Why can't I take my service subscriptions to another country? I don't buy DRM stuff that doesn't work on half of my equipment. Why do I get different content in different countries? And why do record companies and service providers try to regulate which devices I use to listen to their content. Sorry, all of this has nothing to do with piracy, unwillingness to pay or anything. Its just corporate bullshit out of overstaffed strategy departments trying to sell stuff that isn't there. I would be willing to pay. At least as much as I paid for CDs back in the dark ages, probably even much more. But nobody is willing to sell me the content to acceptable conditions anymore and the result is I only spend a fraction of what I spent before, I get less and less interested and in the end j spend money on live concerts instead (which have become both more frequent and much more expensive). So in the end, somebody else is getting my money and eventually evolution will do it's thing. -- pippin --- see iPeng, the Squeezebox iPhone remote and *New: iPeng for iPad*, at penguinlovesmusic.com pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84670 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] SB3 Flakiness
I'm seeing a problem with my SB3. It seems to be regularly losing connection with the server. As well as when it is in active use, I often see it out of the corner of my eye when I am watching TV in the evening. It has a blank screen in standby and I see it going through the process of getting IP address, connecting to server etc. What I am not sure about is whether it is likely to be a problem with the wifi or a hardware problem with the SB3 itself. I have heard of power supply problems for example. I have three other SBs around the house (Touch, Radio and Boom) and I am not seeing similar problems with them. SB3 had been very reliable and in general we seem to have a good wifi signal around the house. Its just corporate bullshit out of overstaffed strategy departments trying to sell stuff that isn't there. I would be willing to pay. At least as much as I paid for CDs back in the dark ages, probably even much more. And you are not alone, I pretty much feel the exact same way, I'm ready to pay (under the right conditions) but no one wants to take my money... I think there are two main types of piracy: Type 1: - People that just collect stuff, they would never pay for it and their goal is just to take backup of as large part of Internet as possible. They aren't interested in the stuff they download, they basically just want to increase the used space on their hard drive and tell their friends how many tracks/movies they have. Type 2: - People similar to you and me who are seriously interested in the music/movies but want to view it now and want to get it the easiest possible way. They don't want to wait 3 months for the record label to release it in their region, they don't want to wait 1 week for the distributor to ship a physical CD by standard mail, they want it now. They are prepared to pay for it but no one wants to take their money. There are also people similar to you and me who have a lot of patience and is prepared to wait. They either do as you describe and focus on concerts instead of recordings, or they patiently waits for the official release on CD in their region and buys it. These people are the reason why the music/movie industry still survives. The music/movie industry is currently too scared that there aren't enough people among type 2 who is ready to pay, so they don't dare to offer user friendly services which risk to increase piracy, they want to ensure that they are in full control of their product. Another important factor to remember is the purpose of a record label and distributor: - Finance the recording studio and recording for new talented artists who can't afford these costs themselves - Do the advertising when the CD is released, since they want to optimize the advertising effect and cost they want to learn from one region of the world before they release it in the next. - Ensure that the CD is distributed to a place where customers can get it - Take their share of the income when the customer buys the product Switching to a online streaming solution is a huge change for these companies and their dilemma is that: - If they switch to a streaming/download solution, the advertising and distribution are going to be completely differently to what they are used to. I can understand if they are scared that someone else is going to offer this a better way and due to this prefer to do their best to force us to continue use their old fashion business models. - If they don't switch a streaming/download solution, there is a risk other record labels do and they will just disappear because other record labels provides a better service for the talented artist to distribute his/her work to the people who is prepared to pay for it. So I can understand why record labels and distributors are scared to change but I think they will also have to realize that if they don't change, the needs for their service are going to disappear anyway. They blame piracy but I think the real reason is that they haven't figured out a way to ensure to 100% that they are still going to get their share of the cake in a download/streaming solution. I think someone big just have to dare to take the first step, then everyone else is going to follow because they are scared to be left behind. It's just frustrating that it takes so long time for them to take the first step. I remember reading that Spotify solved this by offering some big labels stocks in the Spotify company, this way the record labels were sure that they would get some control and also get a share of the earnings if it became a success. It also didn't cost them much if the service failed, since they got the stocks really cheap or maybe even for free. When a few big labels had jumped on the wagon, the rest just followed because they didn't want to be left behind. Of course, there are still some labels/artists who haven't seen the possibilities and refuse to offer their music on Spotify. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland). I would love this but I like to use Spotify instead of Napster. I really don't care if the music comes from my local library or one of the online services I'm paying for. If I have an album in my local library I want the system to use that, else I want it to use the one from the online service. Possibly with an extra dialog asking if I like to use the version in the online service. Unfortunately, I suspect this is a bit out of scope of the current SqueezePad client. I suspect something like this requires support on the server side. However, something that probably could be done is something similar to what Triode has done with the Spotify plugin. When you open the context menu on an artist in the local library you get an On Spotify item at the bottom and by selecting that you will get a list of albums by this artist available in Spotify with the option to play them. I suspect something like this would be possible to add to SqueezePad for the Napster service. Another possible solution is if it's possible to create a favorite for a Napster artist ? If that's possible, you might be able to setup favorites for all your local artists and for all the Napster artists you are interested in and get a common list of them under the Favorites menu. The issue is just that you probably don't want to do this manually if you have a lot of artists. A Favorite Artists lists is probably realistic to do manually but not a All Artists list. -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland).
