[slim] N band Wireless

2011-03-16 Thread Steveyid

Am just moving to a new house where I will have a wireless N band
router. I have a Duet and a Radio (and previously had a G band
router). Will the SBoxes
work automatically on the N band or will I need to make any adjustments
to the router?

Also, as the point of having N band is to increase range (to reach to
the bottom of the new garden) is there any way of 'upgrading' the Radio
to work on the stronger N band?

Thanks for any thoughts

Thanks to all for the help.

No problem. That is precisely why doing this quick easy check on
surrounding WiFi's can greatly reduce WiFi headaches. ;)
Every once in a while check it again to see if you have any new WiFi
neighbors, or a neighbor may have changed their ch #.

Ch 6 is usually the most crowded ch as it is the default ch set at the
factory as part of the routers default settings, and most users never
change it from default.
In a pinch and without the benefit of a NetStumbler type program
showing the current used ch's, guessing to use ch's 1 or 11 is a good
bet based on most still using the default ch 6.

Re: [slim] N band Wireless

2011-03-16 Thread bobkoure

N routers, at least the ones with 3 antennas, do multipath, so I imagine
those would help with G clients.

If you need N, and I'd assume you need it for the range as you
certainly don't need the data rate for a SB, you can get a dd-wrt
capable router that does N, install dd-wrt, put it into 'bridge' mode,
and wire it to your SB.

This article in the wiki may be of interest, especially question #3:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Beginners_Guide_To_Networks#Wireless_performance_on_Mixed_B.2FG.2FN_networks:_Answers.21

In short, upgrading the Radio to N is not something an ordinary user
can do, as it involves not only replacing the physical card, but also
figuring out the drivers for a new N card in the Radio's very
customized Linux environment. But the Radio can benefit from the N
router/AP even while operating as a G device.

I didn't have a custom-convert.conf, so I created one with notepad, and

End result, One of the stations that was playing fast before now

Did I miss a step or something?

At this point I don't understand why they don't incorporate 802.11n into
the Squeezebox line. It isn't all that more expensive, and pretty mature
by now. I have a SBR on the way, and am running only 802.11n my Wi-Fi
network (all my other SQ units are hard wired), so I'm going to have to
fire up the G radio in the gateway. No big deal, but I would be curious
as to why no N in the current products.

Yes all existing sb models was designed before the N standard was
finalized .
So all that existed then was N-draft hardware.

I assume that if a new product was designed they consider it.

Wonder if not the new products have onboard wifi chipset and not
removable. So existing hardware is what it is.

Re: [slim] Help with modifying convert.conf file

2011-03-16 Thread tcutting

You will probably want to look at task manager (or whatever equivalent
for Windows 7) to try to see what's going on. One thing this change
does is that ALL streams will now be transcoded. For example, I
believe even a 44.1kHz MP3 will get sent through LAME and transcoded
to 44.1kHz. I think LAME is smart enough to determine this is a
trivial process, since when I looked at resources, this case runs LAME,
but it doesn't use many resources when compared to a real transcode
(from 48kHz to 44.1, for example).
Look for a LAME process or a sox process when running a stream.

I find it easier knowing which rules are standard by having only custom

[slim] MusicIP and multiple genre tags

I've been using multiple genre names in a single GENRE tag with a
separator.
One of the downsides is that MusicIP does not understand separators, so
if you have a no Christmas music filter, it'll only work to filter out
tracks that have a single element in the genre tag: Christmas, as
MuicIP sees Christmas;Jazz as the genre Christmas;Jazz - and that's
not a match.

It turns out that it's really easy to convert separated labels in a
single tag to multiple tags with MP3Tag.

Go to \Convert\Actions, create a new action group. Add a new action in
that group, pick the action split fields by separator, enter tag
GENRE and the separator you've been using. Click OK, then make sure
the checkbox to the left of your new action group is checked, and
clicking 'OK' will tun it against any tracks you've selected. You can
do entire directories recursively.

SBS appears to do fine with multiple genre tags.

MusicIP does, well, almost fine.
First off, the current (last) version (1.9 beta) does NOT clobber any
of the multiple tags when archiving analysis. (Yes, an earlier version
had an issue, which is why I'm only getting back to multiple tags
now).
-However- it only sees the first tag, so if you've got a MusicIP
filter, make sure you've arranged the tags to the one you're filtering
on comes first. If you have a lot of tags to swap, it'll probably be
easier to do it while they're in a single tag.

So... a slight bit of extra functionality out of a defunct product.
Hope this helps somebody.

I sure wish Logitech would just buy/licence the MusicIP tech and
incorporate it into SBS so everybody gets to enjoy it.
