I have a SB3, but now I want to be able to play hi-res tracks (24/96 and up). Do I need an outboard DAC to get the benefits of 24/96 on the SB3? Re: [slim] SB3 : 24/96 capable?
The SB3's DAC can do max 24/48, and I suspect this also applies to the digital out. SC/SBS/LMS will transparently transcode 24/96 files to 24/48 via SoX when playing them on your SB3. So if you want the benefits of 24/96, you'll probably need a Touch, with or without a DAC. That being said, will you be able to hear the difference between a 24/96 track, and the same track properly downsampled to 24/48? Whether that is humanly possible, is disputed. AFAIU, nobody has yet been able to do so in a double blind test. Re: [slim] HD track won't play via SB3
I don't know if this makes any difference to you, but I had problems with 88.2k files and it ended up being my AV receiver. 96k/192k aren't a problem at all, but 88.2/176.4 are an odd duck! The ONLY reason the original sessions were done at 88.2 or 176.4 is that the producer knew one of the final products was going to be a CD, and sample-rate-conversion from 88.1/176.4 to 44.1k is an easy process, where as 96k/192k isn't. In my case converting the 88.2/176.4 files to either 96k or 192k made all the difference in the world and everything was happy. Also, I thought the SB3 couldn't play anything above 48k but did SRC. The problems I had were on my Transporter and, like I said, ended up being the D/A on my receiver. 88.2k/176.4k is really an odd sample rate and should be avoided... this isn't a 'sales' issue as much as it is an industry issue. Higher sample rate playback is, most of the time, going to be associated with video and MUST be a derivative of 48k to match video sync.
