[slim] SB3 : 24/96 capable?

2012-02-23 Thread jmx

I have a SB3, but now I want to be able to play hi-res tracks (24/96 and
up).

Do I need an outboard DAC to get the benefits of 24/96 on the SB3?

If so, I'll then have to decide between a DAC or a SB Touch. Or both!

thanks!

Re: [slim] SB3 : 24/96 capable?

2012-02-23 Thread Soulkeeper

The SB3's DAC can do max 24/48, and I suspect this also applies to the
digital out. SC/SBS/LMS will transparently transcode 24/96 files to
24/48 via SoX when playing them on your SB3.

So if you want the benefits of 24/96, you'll probably need a Touch,
with or without a DAC.

That being said, will you be able to hear the difference between a
24/96 track, and the same track properly downsampled to 24/48? Whether
that is humanly possible, is disputed. AFAIU, nobody has yet been able
to do so in a double blind test.

Anyway, it's probably more cost effective to spend the money on speaker
upgrades, or room treatment.

Maybe I'll have a little look at porting squeezeslave using the NDK for

I'm starting to catch on.

So with the SBTouch, LMS won't need to transcode 24/96, but will
transcode anything above that (eg. 24/192).

Does SoX need a lot of mem or CPU? I have a 2GB Win7 dell zino as my
server.

I'm interested in seeing if I can tell the diff between a downsampled
24/96 and one that is decoded natively.

The bottom line is this: will 24/96 content sound better on a SBT or a
SB3?

fwiw, speakers are on the way

Logitech acquisition you should also know that the dividing line is
rather fuzzy. The SB3 and Transporter were the last two products sold

I understand that work on the Duet, and possibly the Boom, was underway
before the acquisition, but how much (25%? 50%? 85%?) isn't widely
 known.

I've seen the Logitech Wireless DJ product, reviewed by cnet in 2006,
which has many of the Duet's features (scroll wheel, 2 part system with
controller and decoder box which connects to the stereo, which came out
post Slim Devices Acquisition in 2008, so maybe the Duet was something
being developed by Logitech and it was not a Slim Devices device.

Way back then I considered the Wireless DJ or a Roku Soundbridge to
stream Internet radio around the house, but was informed of the
Squeezebox SB3 at a high end audio show - a device which had true bit
accurate streaming (Roku resampled everything and DJ didn't support
lossless formats), FLAC support and true high fidelity (and the SB3 met
my design ideals for a hi-fi product that has no knobs, works only with
a remote control and is on all of the time).

I had done across the house wiring since 1987 with line level. This is

I think since pl players still work (aside from hardware issues)the
value might have been good.

I first bought a duet and then a receiver and then a SB3 hallowed be
and then a boom best kitchen stereo ever; just add velodyne va 807.

As I understand there are two earlier players and that wifi was an
option for some time.

Reminisce.

Great app I use it all the time. One issue, though, is that the power

Re: [slim] HD track won't play via SB3

2012-02-23 Thread Eric Seaberg

I don't know if this makes any difference to you, but I had problems
with 88.2k files and it ended up being my AV receiver. 96k/192k aren't
a problem at all, but 88.2/176.4 are an odd duck!

The ONLY reason the original sessions were done at 88.2 or 176.4 is
that the producer knew one of the final products was going to be a CD,
and sample-rate-conversion from 88.1/176.4 to 44.1k is an easy process,
where as 96k/192k isn't.

In my case converting the 88.2/176.4 files to either 96k or 192k made
all the difference in the world and everything was happy.

Also, I thought the SB3 couldn't play anything above 48k but did SRC.
The problems I had were on my Transporter and, like I said, ended up
being the D/A on my receiver.

88.2k/176.4k is really an odd sample rate and should be avoided... this
isn't a 'sales' issue as much as it is an industry issue. Higher sample
rate playback is, most of the time, going to be associated with video
and MUST be a derivative of 48k to match video sync. Those are the
rules

Indeed. And no, it has nothing to do with Linux.

Actually, the _true_ story is more prosaic, or is it?

When I started experimenting with streaming clients (not yet the
Squeebeox back then, I came to the Squeezebox because of it's remote
control capabilities) I always said that I want an iPhone without the
Phone for remote control. Now an iPhone without a Phone is an i,
which is pronounced like the German word for egg and that was always
my code name for the original skin.

Then when I found others might want to use it, too, I needed an icon
and egg sounded like it fits a bird and then - my graphics skills are
really, really limited - I checked the icons I have around here and
there was the one with my penguin et voilĂ
And iPeng really _looks_ so much like iPhone and iPod and all
of this which is also kind of cool.

Thanks pippin. Great story!
