Be that as it may, I have one phone with 1.6.1 that does not show this behavior and one with 2.0 that does do it. I have no experience other than Windows OS. Squeezeplay for Windows does work without mysqueezebox.com. I don't have a mysqueezebox account and I'm able to set it up anyway. If you're sending the audio from the iPod Touch to a receiving device like an Airport Express, Apple TV, or third-party AirPlay receiver, that's using Airplay. The audio you're sending could be from files stored on the iPod itself or from files stored on the computer and accessed using Home Sharing. But in the latter case you could also play the files in iTunes on the computer itself, under the control of Apple Remote on the iPod, and send the audio from iTunes to your receiver via AirPlay. (At least you can for a Mac, I still don't know if this is available on PC's.) If you're playing music on the iPod through a dock that takes the digital audio from the iPod then the sound quality should be however good the DAC etc in the dock is, subject to the 'limitation' of 16 bit / 44.1 kHz. Similarly the quality from an AirPlay receiver should be whatever its DAC and output circuitry provides, given a lossless source file. nekomatic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96726 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

So (a) you'd need to subscribe to iTunes Match, and (b) playback would be at 256 kbps AAC (I think), no matter what format or quality your source files back at home were. After years of abuse my ears aren't what they were, so I think going the way of spdif out to hardcore external DACs is probably overkill. I have seen elsewhere that the quality of phono out on the Joggler ain't great. I'm certainly up for spending an extra £30 on an external USB sound card to improve matters, but not up for learning how to code and then spending £150+ on a dac for a device whose main selling point to me was price. I'm happy with the sound from my Touch (with phono out). If I can bring the joggler up to that standard by adding an external USB sound card, then great, I will use it in the living room to take advantage of the airplay feature. Yes I know I could a/b them when I get it, but it would be useful to also have a technical opinion so as to help remove any nagging doubts. Listening tests are a nightmare. Re: [slim] O2 Joggler v Squeezebox Touch for Audio Quality
I've compared an SB3 (Classic) with a Joggler, and I can safely say, even without a double-blind-ab-test, that the analogue output of the SB3 is far superior to the Joggler. Like you I tried swapping out my main SB with the Joggler as it's aesthetically nicer and easier to control, but the sound quality made me immediately switch it back. Another problem I found was that the volume level coming out of the Joggler was too low, which meant I had to up the preamp db level, which caused a nasty pop when it turned on. A USB audio dongle is the way to go I think if you want to use the Joggler, as long as you don't mind it sticking out the side, or you get a 90-degree cable and stick it behind. simbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11481 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96844 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] O2 Joggler v Squeezebox Touch for Audio Quality
I have 3 Jogglers and 1 Squeezebox radio running in my system, and I previously owned a SB3 so feel I can cpomment on this. The Joggler has a 3.5mm output. The audio chip on-board has several options including digital and line out however only the headphones output is used and connected to the the jack on the back. This means the output is not up to the standards of a real squeezebox (if you have a touch I believe they have headphone jacks, imagine using them instead of the RCA outs) So out of the box its not really suitable as a high quality audio device. The output can be tweaked by the way so the low volume issue can be sorted but its still not the best. I do use the standard output with the Joggler in my bedroom connected to a cheap 2.1 speaker set I got included with a Dell PC a while ago, its perfectly acceptable for that purpose, once the gain has been adjusted to combat the low audio levels mentioned above One of my other Jogglers has been modified by myself to have an optical port, this was actually quite an easy mod to do, its 3 wires soldered to points on the motherboard and this feeds the on-board DAC in my Arcam AVR amplifier. I have tried this Joggler feeding the DAC in a mates entirely Linn based system (I don't recall the model numbers of his kit, I was too distracted by the pile of expensive Linn kit, including a rather lovely TT he owns) TBH the Joggler feeding FLAC (ripped from CD so 16/44.4) was indistinguishable from CDs played through the same DAC. I'm not pretending we did a proper ABX blind test but to both of our ears we were perfectly happy with the digital output from my Joggler. My mate has since bought one which I've modded with the optical output for him and he's a happy bunny My third Joggler uses a Behringer USB soundcard (UAC something or other from memory, possible 302?) feeding a modest stereo setup (Cambridge Audio A5 Amp, Mordaunt Short MS906 speakers) I have directly compared the Joggler with Behringer to my Cambridge CD player, I couldn't compare the SB3 directly as I sold it a while ago but this is the system I used to have the SB3 connected to. I have to be honest I don't think I could tell them apart. The sound quality is certainly good enough for my ears and modest setup. The Joggler in some ways is what the Touch should have been. A lovely 7 screen. Its powerful enough to run a full LMS, either using network shares or a USB device for your tunes. My Joggler with the SP-DIF mod runs the latest LMS, including a fair few plugins, including PLAYWMA and PLAYREAL with Mplayer to transcode these screens. Even Triodes spotify plug in works, but not the official one. Regarding the USB port on the side, personally I found this location to be a pain, however if you're not using the WiFi then you can actually remove the internal wifi card which frees up another USB port, I drilled a hole on the back case and stuck a small usb evtension cable in it so I have a captive lead on the back. you can then use a Hub to connect multiple devices to the USB. So for me (I'm from Yorkshire so a bit tight) I have 3 zones and a perfectly capable LMS machine for less money (including the previously mentioned Behringer soundcard) for less money than I spent on the SBR. I love my Jogglers but they do require a little more effort than just plugging in a genuine squeezebox to shine jimbobvfr400's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=56857 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96844 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] O2 Joggler v Squeezebox Touch for Audio Quality
Speaking as someone who uses that Behringer 302 USB/DAC (squeezeslave output from my PC), I can tell you that the DAC in that unit is OK but not wonderful. From the comments above, it's an improvement on the Joggler. If you're setting up somewhere where you already have a receiver, get a toslink cable and a/b/a between audio output from the Behringer (that DAC) and toslink to your receiver (receiver's DAC). My mid-range Yamaha gear (RXV series) was clearly better (mid-range Burr-Brown DACs, but one per channel) I took a Behringer 302 apart at one point (long ago) and looked up the chips in use. As I remember there's a single chip that's a TI combination DAC and digital audio converter. Given the A/B/A above, this calls the digital audio converter somewhat into question, but I haven't gotten around to trying a higher end converter. I'm using a PC and ASIO so that higher-end would be a Musiland. If I had a portable device and wanted analog audio output as good as a SB3, I'd think about an Audioquest Dragonfly, but that's in the $200+ range (the SB3 DAC is quite good, and, considering the price of the dragonfly, not overpriced) bobkoure's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=14646 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96844 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Poll: Would you pay for a Squeezebox Server in the cloud?
A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96850 Question: How much would you be willing to pay for a service as described? - Nothing. Not Interested. - up to 5 EUR/$ - up to 15 EUR/$ - up to 25 EUR/$ I think the market for a multiple 100$ network audio player is somewhat limited. To me it seems SlimDevices/Logitech got a big part of that market but then sales reached there natural limit and stagnated. Most of the squeezebox devices are long living so at some point there's not too much incentive to buy new ones. So for Logitech it's one-time money against the continued expenditures of keeping the infrastructure (mysb.com) and software alive. I never understood why Logitech didn't start their own kind of cloud thing. They integrate mysb.com with all kind of subscription based third party services instead of offering their own ones. I gave a lot of money to mp3tunes.com for storing my own music in the cloud - but it never really worked. I still give money to Rhapsody for streaming additional music. I'm buying my music in third party online stores. New services like Itunes Match and Amazons Cloud Player kind of merge some of these markets. Even Ubuntu has its own music store and associated cloud storing services. If Logitech came up with services like that, I would happily pay them instead. Since logitech never offered some working cloud service for accessing internet radio + my own music i eventually set up a virtual server in a data center for hosting my own instance of sqeezebox server + 300 GB of online storage for my own music. That costs me 30 EUR/month the data center infrastructure + 10 EUR/month to Rhapsody for music streaming + a lot of hassle for setup und running the system. I would happily give that money (or rather some EUR less) to logitech for offering me the same service via mysb.com. But in the long run it doesn't make too much sense to multiply space requirements by storing the same music over and over again. Amazon does the right thing with it's cloud player. Just upload users music if it isn't in a common pool. At the same time I think amazons cloud player is ridiculously cheap (25 EUR/*year* for storing your unlimited size personal music collection). If logitech (or whoever) offered a similar service for squeezebox owners, but at higher quality (lossless), I would be willing to pay up to 25 EUR per *month* for that (whereas I think 10 to 15 EUR / month would be more reasonable for a mass market). mcm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1925 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96850 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Support of Dolby 5.1 Music on Squeezeboxes
I have an increasing number of Dolby 5.1 Music Files in my library on the NAS, most have AC3 and some have FLAC format. It would be great if I could listen to this music, exactly as easily as to my stereo music using Squeezebox and iPeng. Unfortunately, I do not see anywhere that the SlimServer scans the music library for AC3 files. It should just need to be displayed side-by-side in the list with MP3 or AAC. There are even no tags to scan, just the files to be listed. On the Squeezebox itself, we would need just Passthrough to the SPDIF interface and no decoding. It is even more surprising to see that the Sqeezeboxes don't support it, considering that most hardware media players scan for AC3 music files and implement the Passthrough. The Twonky Media server does it etc. So I do not understand why this was ignored by the Squeezebox developpers and community. If somebody is interested in Dolby 5.1 music in the different formats, there are fantastic examples to download from here : http://www.diatonis.com/surround_sound_music.html It would be so easy to implement. Re: [slim] O2 Joggler v Squeezebox Touch for Audio Quality
When say Marantz Receiver I mean in the old analogue sense; so an amp combined with an analogue radio. Not a Toslink or SPDIF in sight ! As I say, my ears are sub audiophile, as are my pockets !. If I can get the sound quality of the Joggler to something equivalent of a Touch (playing via phonos) I would be happy, but Im not up for spending any more than £50 to achieve this. Re: [slim] Support of Dolby 5.1 Music on Squeezeboxes
You can ! encapsulate the ac3 stream in a WAV or FLAC file keep volume at 100% and use only the spdiff or toslink ( analog out will be rubbish ) this works fine . with flac, tagging would work fine . There are tons of old treads on the subject . Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Squeezeslave: 1.2 released
Hi, I'd just like to confirm whether or not squeezeslave can be registered with mysqueezebox.com. I think that the answer is no, but perhaps someone has been able to make it work? I have tried changing the mac address a few different times, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. The reason I ask is that I would like to control my squeezeslave instance through squeezeplay and play apps like pandora. I can currently play pandora on squeezeslave by controlling it through the LMS web gui; however, when I use squeezeplay and select MyApps to get to Pandora, I receive an error message that this device has already been registered with another account. My understanding is that this error message is a result of the fact that the squeezeslave instance is not registered with mysqueezebox.com, and I can confirm that this is true. At least squeezeslave does not show up when I list My Players on the mysqueezebox.com website. I have tried to register the squeezeslave instance using squeezeplay through Test-SN Registration which seems to work. I receive a success confirmation message at least. However, the player still will not show up on the mysqueezebox.com website. If its not possible to register the squeezeslave instance, does anyone have a suggestion for a work around? Perhaps a way to just add a Pandora menu item to the main menu of Squeezeplay. As I have said, I can play pandora on squeezeslave through LMS, and it does show up on the Now Playing screen of Squeezeplay. I just dont have a way to start it from squeezeplay or change the channels. iTunes Match supports ALAC. Airplay is LAN-only (for all intents and purposes) All Apple devices (Macs/iDevice/Apple TV/AE) all have digital outs (in some form). Re: [slim] How does Apple AirPlay compare to SqueezeBox in functionality?
As far as Apple TV vs. SB goes, here are some personal specifics, divided into stuff one is good at and the other one not, and vice versa. Pro AE: - Fits perfectly into an Apple ecosystem including their cloud-services. - Streaming all kinds of sounds, videos and pictures from all kinds of Apple devices, is a breeze. This is important since most video- and music-services have apps or clients for said devices. This in addition to all other more random youtube, etc. content, one can pull of the big net. - Best-effort-kind-of-good SQ by using digital outputs into DACs etc (though opinions vary as to whether its bit perfect). This means that I think the quality is pretty good - wether or not its actually The Best Possible, is not that important - nor is it optimised with this in mind. - The way I use and think of it is, as as a means of getting a better viewing/listening experience than on the smaller device. Pro SB: - Bitperfect - High-res - WAN-streaming (without cloud-subscritions) - I can 100% manage my own library the old fashion way - no cloud stuff etc. - When up and running - its independent of computers/iDevices/etc. Its just good old high-fi with a thingy that happens to source over the network. So I use both as I believe they (in the present state) serve the same, but different purposes :) bhaagensen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7418 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96726 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
