Sonos seems to be falling behind the curve regarding hi-rez files. They still do not support 24/96. I don't necessarily care about the super hi-rez files (no advantage to my ears) , but to me 24/96 support is desirable. Obviously, this is an individual decision. Re: [slim] Announcement - ickStream open beta release on Squeezebox !
I think that would work but it's still quite a different product. We would see a way to use that to integrate it with the traditional Squeezebox system (using LMS as a server while still driving the player through the ickStream protocol) but it would still be a different product and probably not really worthwhile as long as MySqueezebox.com is still running. Since MySB _is_ still running this currently doesn't have the highest priority for us since most new vendors making Squeezebox-compatible hardware use the server (and often even embed it; hardware has become more powerful since the Touch came out) but we do have most of what would be needed to eventually get it up already working now in the closed beta. One thing that will not work that way, though, is supporting the ip3k Squeezeboxes (SB3, Boom, Transporter), these will always require LMS when MySB would be no longer available and I don't really see an easy way to change that. --- learn more about iPeng, the iPhone and iPad remote for the Squeezebox and Logitech UE Smart Radio as well as iPeng Party, the free Party-App, at penguinlovesmusic.com *New: iPeng 8, the Universal App for iOS 7 and iOS 8* pippin's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13777 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102497 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

But in any case, a bigger sonos difference for me is that they don't support more than about 60,000 files (maybe a lot fewer (e.g., 45,000) if lots of metadata in tags). They don't support certain large artwork, they have a half-baked implementation of ReplayGain tags (in general, and in particular in comparison to Squeezeboxes). *Home:* VortexBox 4TB (2.3) LMS 7.8 Transporter, Touch, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio) *Cottage:* VBA 3TB (2.3) LMS 7.8 Touch Benchmark DAC I, Boom, Radio w/Battery (all ethernet except Radio) *Office:* Win7(64) LMS 7.8 Squeezelite *Spares:* Touch(3), Radio(3), Boom, SB3, CONTROLLER *Controllers:* iPhone6 iPadAir2 (iPeng8 Squeezepad), CONTROLLER, or SqueezePlay 7.8 on Win7(64) laptop *Files:* ripping: dbpoweramp FLAC; post-rip: mp3tag, PerfectTunes; Streaming: Spotify garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102809 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Do people still buy digital music? New business idea; would love feedback
Hello Squeezebox community! I have been a huge supporter and user of Squeezebox for 6 or 7 years now. Although I never post anything, I have been to the forums many times to get help. It is truly a great community and I thought it would be a great place to get some feedback on a business idea I am working on. As a middle-aged person with kids, I have found it difficult to keep up to date with what is going on in the music world. Especially with things like Spotify that give you every single song you would ever want on demand, I feel lost in a world of way too much choice. In order to combat this feeling, I generally look to experts to help me find music that will keep me up to date, but even that doesn't always work so well. Enter BoxSett (www.boxsett.com) Get 8-10 albums curated by a record label (after all, aren't they the natural curators out there) and offer them to listeners at a Pay What You Want price (similar to Humble Bundle) These albums would then be available for download in any format you would like for as long as you want them My hope is that this will provide listeners with a few benefits: -An in at the record label who has hand-picked an amazing set of music -Unbeatable price -No more overwhelmed feeling -New relationships with artists -Knowing where their money is going -DRM free, any format music (FLAC, MP3, AAIS, WAV, etc) -Simplicity What do you think? Is this something you would try? If yes, great! Want to help? If no, bummer, but why? Re: [slim] How to use the Transporter IR input jack?
Well, I'm right handed, and kind of born with two left hands. ;) I suck at soldering things, and lose patience quickly, so I'd prefer something either really simple to build (crafting a jack cable with a couple components should be okay) or ready to use. Thank you anyway! :) Now, if DIY is your thing, could you tell me if I am right thinking that a typical IR receiver uses a three pins layout (power, ground, signal) and that if the Transporter only features a mono jack connection, it would probably only take care of the signal and ground pins? Unless the signal pin could also carry power? I have a nice little collection of things that have lost - HD-DVD, HP webOS Touchpad/Phone, Squeezebox Touch. I did buy the HD-DVD and webOS stuff after they lost, so very cheaply and the Squeezebox Touch is probably worth more now than I paid for it new. Thanks all for the opinions on the advantages, but I'm afraid not many are relevant to the average person. Re: [slim] Announcement - ickStream open beta release on Squeezebox !
The main problem with this is that ickStream is a plugin and installing plugins on the touch can be complicated. You would also have to run the server on the Touch (have a USB drive of some kind attached - might as well be empty, though). We haven't tested it so even though there are builds of the ickStream plugin for ARM processors without FPU I'm not sure it would work but there isn't really anything that should stop it from working in general. We do also have - in our closed beta - an applet that allows you to use ickStream on the Touch without any server but that uses our ickStream client side protocol so you would also have to use an ickStream controller to use it, the Squeezebox controller Apps would not work. ickStream - for the Squeezebox - is a backend service allowing access to streaming services somewhat similar to what MySqueezebox.com does when used with LMS. But it's not a Squeezebox Server so you still need _some_ server to operate your Squeezebox with, a Squeezebox doesn't do anything without one.
