OK - the squeezelite on the piCorePlayer does not require transcoding
anymore as I installed the one which is compiled with the -DFFMPEG
option. I also recompiled squeezelite with apple lossless support and no
transcoding anymore.

[slim] Wireless music streamer that allows multiple users?

2015-12-09 Thread chromatone

Hi there

Good morning - I am looking for some advice about a wireless music
streamer that would be suitable for an office of approx 10 people.

The main requirement would be that the folk in the office could all
access the playlist on their own PC/Mac, so each user could queue up
10-20 tracks at a time (trying to keep things democratic).

I used to have a Squeezebox classic and a Boom (both sadly missed),
which I think would have been perfect as we could all have accessed the
squeezeplay software through our browsers, and controlled the playlist.

Does anything exist at a reasonable (say £150) pricepoint? I am not
really up for building a rasberry pi version as tech is not my
strongpoint!

Cheers for the reply - that sounds useful. So basically, I need to
install LMS and squeezelite on one of our old laptops (which would need
to have the music library on it I assume), and plug in some speakers -
and we can then all access the playlist from our own laptops, using LMS,
over the wired/wireless network? If that's the way it works, sounds
great - ta.

But if all you need is one set of speakers, controllable from anywhere
on the network, you might also look at 'Music Player Daemon'

@pippin
Server Version: Logitech Media Server Version: 7.7.5 - 1416570306 @ Thu
Nov 27 08:25:11 UTC 2014
Should I upgrade to a newer version? I am running Debian by the way.

Yes - it does transcode for the squeezelite player, but not the iPeng.
But actually, this morning it is working. I assume it has to do with the
transcoding. SO let's look there:

The settings are

19414

A typical output from "top" when playing a apple lossless to a
squeezelite player is:

Code:

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
  6967 squeezeb 20 0 3096 772 560 S 9.2 0.3 0:13.03 faad
  6968 squeezeb 20 0 5884 1496 1172 S 2.6 0.6 0:04.01 sox
  73 root 20 0 000 S 1.0 0.0 18:00.46 kworker/u:1
  1905 squeezeb 20 0 103m 84m 4308 S 0.7 33.7 15:32.58 squeezeboxserve
  ...

So it is transcoding - no sox and faad when playing the same to iPeng.

@mherger
No - here is one with the specs:
http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5/pogoplug-v2-pinkgray

It should be powerful enough.

But if you need a separate player with high quality audio out - there
are pre built Pi based systems available - for example

With regard to the speakers you attach to the laptop.

I would strongly recommend some USB Active Speakers such as -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Alesis-Active-320-Studio-Monitors/dp/B003UZBL14/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8=1449666861=8-4=alesis+speaker
- or a USB DAC to a proper hi-fi system. A cheap but very good USB DAC
that will server the purpose is -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-UCA202-U-Control-low-latency-Interface/dp/B000KW2YEI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1449667024=8-1=behringer+uca202

You can of course use cheap PC speakers but they will sound very tinny.

As an aside, it was always unfortunate that Apple decided not to include
a built-in CRC in the Apple Lossless format. If the situation was
reversed and the OP was trying to determine if any FLAC files were
corrupted, he could easily run any number of BATCH programs to test the
FLAC files (which *do* contain a built-in CRC). I always do this after I
create a new backup disk of my FLAC collection.

I would use foobar2000's bit compare tool to check if the FLAC and
corresponding ALAC decode to exactly the same thing (bit-for-bit
identical PCM stream).

Re: [slim] Used Squeeze devices on eBay -- Buying advice?

2015-12-09 Thread meza01

After dabbling with squeezeplug on raspberry pi and o2 joggler devices I
switched to buying Squeezebox original hardware on eBay. Had problems
with network and terrible music syncing, always drifting, on the home
brew stuff.

Since switching to a system of booms and receivers the syncing is
perfect.
When weighing up time, effort, quality and reliability of end result I'm
happier with the first party hardware. The raspberry pi makes a great
LMS however.

Re: [slim] Weird networking issue: SB2 v SB3

2015-12-09 Thread w3wilkes

A really dumb question... Even though you plugged the SB3 into Ethernet,
is it really configured for a wired connection? If the configured
connection is wireless for the SB3 that could be why it's buffering in
the other location if the wireless signal is weak there. Just plugging
it in to a Ethernet cable does not mean it will use the cable, I think
it has to be specifically configured for a wired connection.

Some consumer switches are "green" all the time , and they are som
simple ( no wlan etc ) that there is no configuration mode , so,you
can't change that .

I tend to buy those simple "blue" netgear switches you can get ( usually
8 port ). They are professional ? Whatever they mean by that , but not
expensive , ugly metal case rather bright diodes .

The "consumer" models tend to come in more rounded plastic cases with
more subdued design , but they have "features"

True, my remark only applies to manageable switches.
(and funnily, it is with a netgear GS-108Tv2 that I recently had compat
