Hi ucw,

If Bernard doesn't get back to you I have a copy, but I'd have to
email it to you. It'd be nice to have a file location on the forum.

Re: [slim] Advice Please - FLAC to MP3

2016-05-19 Thread usc95

I rip to ALAC instead of FLAC. Itunes will automatically transcode the
ALAC files down to lossy AAC files during syncing. It will give you the
option to choose the bitrate and do all the work. The nice thing is you
only need one library for your i-devices and Squeezeboxes since LMS
handles ALAC just fine. Many other devices now work with ALAC as well
so it is not nearly as divisive a format as it used to be.

Re: [slim] Music Backup in the Cloud

2016-05-19 Thread usc95

I have all my music uploaded to Google Music. I am not sure if it is
available to be downloaded as lossless files were I to need it but it
serves as my third backup. I have my music on two computers both backed
up to external drives. While Google Music isn't perfect it is there for
me to use in an absolute worst case situation (like a house fire) and is
absolutely free and no maintenance.

Re: [slim] Music Backup in the Cloud

2016-05-19 Thread Dogberry2

Backups to servers outside of your control mean that your data is no
longer in your control. If you don't control it, you don't own it.

I back up everything from all my home computers (my three, wife's two)
as incremental backups to my own server, nightly. Weekly, the server
gets backed up to another location, secure and physically offsite but
still on my property and within my control. Data from phones (not much,
but sometimes some photos & stuff) gets backed up on the weekend or when
I figure it's necessary. All data is on physical media that belong to
me, and that I can control access to. That's a personal policy for me: I
retain all control and access to my property, and I don't plan on
changing that policy.

For me 7.9 is worth it for:
- Random Albums
- Browse by Composer
- Browse by Conductor
- Full-text search
- Still playing when running a full wipe & rescan.

Re: [slim] Music Backup in the Cloud

2016-05-19 Thread charlesr

I'm using iBroadcast. It's free and lets you store your stuff in
original quality (FLAC in my case) and get it back at the same quality
later. They also don't muck about with it with DRM and stuff - it's your
stuff, stored. I use it for music in the car via their phone app.
Currently not supporting true gapless, but they are working on it I'm
told. Premium extras will come later I guess. I've been sending my
suggestions to their team via email - they seem pretty keen to get
feedback and ideas.

Now if someone here could just make a plugin / app that lets you stream
from it (apparently their API is open and ready for people to do stuff
with) to the LMS, that would be mega.

I have 2 HDDs with my FLACs on locally though too.

Re: [slim] Music Backup in the Cloud

2016-05-19 Thread Ron Thigpen
You might want to take a look at the various online backup service
providers out there: Crashplan, Backblaze, etc. They offer good
services at reasonable prices ($50-60/year).

If you're keeping local and remote backups of multiple TBs of data,
these prices are are competitive with the costs of buying and replacing
your own backup drives.

Most of them do offer seamless encryption - their software and servers
take care of this without user intervention. Many offer to use keys
that only you hold, meaning the service can't decrypt anything without you.

There is the issue of that first big upload sync job. This does rely on
good upload speeds, or the use of "seeding" service in which you mail in
a physical drive that they'll load as the first backup set.

I've always been a roll-my-own guy, using my own drives, scripting and
scheduling native sync utilities (hooray for rsync!) and so on. But,
it's really gotten to the point where this isn't advantageous. The paid
backup providers offer great service, reasonable rates, and much more
durable protection that I can provide myself.

Take a look.

Here's a good comparative review:

If you already done and happy with your tags on a bigger library and
dont change/add the files (never run a clean & rescan) you could stay on
your Version.

7.9 has many improvements and i remember the old days when i (possible)
was the last 6.x user and most of you running "squeezeboxserver" (i
didnt want that fancy stuff and "hate" the lack of mysql instead of
sqlite) but wheels are not standing still:p

Aha, that would be it. Thanks for confirming. Pity, it supported some
useful things that don't work in e.g. squeezer.

Nothing to to with the LMS version, Android OS 5.x and later broke it.
Not likely to get fixed though.

Could be just me, but you get to use the official SB app from the play
store too. Doesn't work for me after the upgrades to lms 7.9.
I did upgrade to hopefully fix some issues with cover photo cache DB
size, but nothing much changed. In the end I gained library views, which
is cool, but I have yet to really get it working how I want it.

The only reason to update would be if later versions had additional
features that you want.

Apart from that - if it's not broken, don't fix it.

(I'm still running 7.6.1).

While many of you are using 7.9 LMS, I am still using the recommended
7.7.5.
I know I am behind times, but I am listing flawlessly. Are there any
downsides to me using this msb.com's recommended software?

Why would I update and chance having issues?

Thank you and I LOVE the SB ecosystem just as much and even more than
ever. My thanks to those out there who are keeping this ecosystem going
( Michael and Pippin and others). I wish LOGITECH would resume
manufacturing devices but I know this isn't going to happen,
unfortunately.
