This is a great app .Well worth the 9.99 .

Pippin, I don't know how you feel about this but when
you hit the album artwork to play the album you do not go directly to
the whats playing
screen. You need to flick your finger to get it there.

The native ipeng app is superb.

One thing I would like to see is if I touch the album artwork for that

album to immediately start playing.Maybe there could be a little plus
icon
if you just wanted to start adding albums to the playlist.

I haven't used the web ipeng in a while but i thought that was how it
functioned;that is when i touched the album icon it would start
playing.

Yes, iPeng native is different on these things, mainly because I don't
consider it as expensive to go to another page as with the skin (since
 that's much faster here).
Also, the album art logic is a bit different, in Search for example,
if you click a cover it will get you to the track list for that album
instead of playing it right away.

It does what i want it to .Under the web skin is was a tap.Now it
is more of brief press and it will start playing the album

[slim] SlimCenter won't launch OS X Server 10.4.11

2008-11-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've been running SlimServer, now SlimCenter for years on my OS X
Server. After doing the security update SlinCenter will not start up.

I upgraded from SlimCenter 7.2 to 7.2.1 and that didn't help.

I found a posting that showed how to delete all the SlimCenter files
and then reinstalled, still no joy.

Any ideas how to figure out what is going on and get SlimCenter working
again?

I'm not much of a Unix person, but not afraid of using the command line
in terminal with some patient guidance.

Re: [slim] FF Rewind using 7.2 ROCKS

2008-10-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is a very interesting thread. Let me summarize: PLEASE GIVE US BACK
AUDIO WHILE FAST FORWARDING AND REWINDING AS A USER PREFERENCE! PLEASE
PLEASE PLEASE.

As a professional mastering engineer, one of my regular tasks is to
listen/evaluate a new piece of music that comes in from a prospective
client. Usually my assistant puts it on the slimserver because it's
easy and convenient to play, it's in the folder called listen_evals
and stays there for a time. I almost never have time to listen to the
whole piece. Usually I want to play the intro, hear a little of the
verse, and skip forward to a chorus or some other parts. Although the
old software's fast forward was pretty dumb sounding and you had to be
real careful not to accidentily skip to the next file insteada
reasonably skilled listener could at least tell when the chorus began
while skimming!

So I need this and dearly miss the ability to hear something while
skimming forward. It's a real time saver in a long piece of music to
find the spot you're looking for. This should be intuitively obvious to
the most casual observer. Thanks in advance. Can someone please pass
this on to the developers? Make it a preference and then everyone can
have their cake and eat it, too. I do recognize how much faster it is
to fast forward or rewind IF YOU KNOW exactly how far you're going. But
if you are listening to an unknown piece of music, having some audio
clue as to where you are when skipping is essential. End of discussion.
:-)

[slim] Download speed from SlimDevices very slow

2008-10-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I find that the download speed of software upgrades from this site is
very slow - both the current SLimserver as well as nightlies.
I live in South Africa and our intrenet speeds are not as fast as many
countries but 12-13KB/sec is painfully slow. I can easily get up to
10X faster speeds at other sites and I do not think it is a
network/firewall etc problem..
Is this a problem that others have found?

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter will NOT start up on MAC

2008-09-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I did a routine security upgrade yesterday on the OS X Server. That
is when the SqueezeCenter stopped working.

I found this post:

http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-69468.html

that seems to be the problem I'm having. I'll do the recommended CPAN
commands and see if this solves the problem.

I did back off to SlimServer 6.5.4 which resulted in the same errors.
So it seems to be a Perl problem, not a SlimServer or Squeeze Center
problem.

I'm surprised I'm the only one having this problem, at least that I can
find on the searches

Re: [slim] Wadia 170 iTransport vs Slimdevices Transporter - initial impressions

2008-08-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The Transporter is used in digital out mode. The Tact digital amps are
in fact DAC's as the signal remains digital until outputting to
speakers.
The Slimdevices products are, IMO, easier to use in terms of seeing
what tracks are playing, managing playlists etc.
The advantage of the Wadia is that one does not have to be connected to
a computer or network in order to play music. Sonically I did not find
any advantage to the Wadia and, as stated in my initial post, I prefer
the sound of the Transporter to that of the Wadia.
I will again compare the units after running the Wadia for a week.

[slim] Wadia 170 iTransport vs Slimdevices Transporter - initial impressions

2008-08-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I receivd my dock yesterday and have run it in for 24 hours. Setup was
easy and it works well with my 160G iPod Classic. I am obviously using
the digital out. Cable is different type to that used in the
Transporter. Both connected to PS Audio PPP.
Sound at this stage is pretty good and more than acceptable. Directly
comparing it to the Transporter shows the Wadia to be less smooth, bit
more grain, most noticeable in mids and lower treble. Bass is similar.
Has slightly less ambience than Transporter.
Usability is poor in comparison. Wadia is far from me and obvioulsy
display is not readable. Remote can only change tracks, pause etc.
One needs to go up to the iPod and change albums etc. Transporter has
great display and very complete remote. Duet is even better in this
repect.

The unit may improve with some running in but I doubt it will be
replacing my Transporter for serious listening. Advantage is that I
can select a playlist and use it fo general listening without powering
up my laptop etc.

For those thinking of getting one, I would suggest looking at the Duet
first which should be similar to the Transporter wrt digital output.

Regards

Jose

2008-07-29 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50299

Question: How often do you have hard drive failures of your music
server?

- 1 or more a year
- 2 or more in mutliple years
- Never
- All the time

I'm yet another (almost) 20 years IT experience person to post in this
thread. Many people are suggesting raid as a good way to go and I
don't disagree with them at all - raid is a good option.

However, in my home setup, where I'm in the fortunate position of
having several machines (I guess that's not that uncommon these days),
I just run a scheduled nightly copy using Windows own robocopy software
to another drive on a separate machine. The initial copy takes a while
if you have a big collection, but with the right command line switches
in place, subsequent copies only update changed files, keeping the 2
drives in sync in a matter of a few moments.

Re: [slim] What Anti-Virus software do you use

2008-07-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49644

Question: Which Anti-Virus do you use

- Avast
- AVG (free 8.0)
- Avira
- CA E-Trust
- ESET
- Kaspersky
- F-Secure
- McAfee (any version)
- Norton (any version)
- Other or None (please post a response)

I use Sophos AV Version 7.3.3.under a licence agreement that my Company
has with Sophos (all staff get a copy for free for as long as my
Company continues to pay its bills to Sophos). If I had to pay for my
AV, I'd go with AVG Free.

Re: [slim] Artwork with controller???

2008-07-23 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Itunes keeps all of the artwork in a separate folder from the
individual
music files and that is why it is not showing up on your controller.

If you search for coverscout in this forum,a very nice individual
provides a free demo for coverscout which will copy all itunes artwork
to the music files

this demo only works with mac computers and you dont make it clear if
you use a windows or mac computer

Thanks, I had somehow missed this thread.
There did not however seem to be a final answer on how thesse high bit
files can be played.

Regards

Jose

[slim] Transporter - can it read 24/176 files?

2008-07-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Reference Recording is now offering 24/176 wav files on a DVD. I know
that the Transporter specs state that it can handle up to 24/96 file
formats.

Does anyone have any experience with using the Transporter with 24/176
or 24/192 files? Would it be necessary to downsample the files to
24/88 or 24/96 in order for the Transporter to play them.

Appreciate any information.

Jose

Re: [slim] Transporter - can it read 24/176 files?

2008-07-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Follow-up:

I upsampled a 16/44.1 file to 24/176 and 24/192 wave files with Adobe
Audition and tried to play them through the Transporter - all I got was
noise.

It would seem that it is necessary to downsample the Reference
Recording files to 24/88 or 24/96 to be able to play them.
I would assume that 176 or 192 PLAC files would also not be handled by
the Transporter.

[slim] Roku vs Slim, re Rhapsody

2005-10-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi

As a long-time Slim Devices champion - having successfully convinced three
friends to get Slimp3 or Squeezebox devices - I wanted to raise a discussion
point with the group about Roku and Rhapsody.

Something I've never been able to get working properly is the RealSlim
plugin on the Slimp3. Despite Vidur's help, on my setup it always seemed too
slow and tended to freeze the computer.

Now I know there has been some controversy about the Roku Soundbridge but
I've been testing it for a while. It doesn't have nearly the same level of
bells and whistles as the Slim device - I'm already getting annoyed at the
lack of sleep or alarm functions in the basic setup and the search function
isn't nearly as good.

But the interface with Rhapsody works brilliantly, and far better than on
any similar device I've tried. Again the search isn't as good as on
RealSlim, but on my set-up it's much more reliable. Because I have so much
respect and admiration for Slim Devices and have been such an advocate of
theirs, I didn't really want the Roku to work. But I have to say it does
work, and on Rhapsody in particular very well.

So I wanted to ask... where do things stand on development of the Rhapsody
plugin? Does the Slimserver Rhapsody plugin work differently to the Roku
connection to Rhapsody?

[slim] SOAP::Lite use with v6

2005-03-14 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have been using SOAP::Lite successfully in a plugin
that Ive developed with v5.4. Ive now installed v6 and find
that I can no longer connect to the server. The same code outside of the
plugin works ok.

As a result, Ive looked briefly into the
changes for v6 and noticed that routines for handling HTTP blocking have been
introduced. I was wondering if the changes might have some bearing on why
my SOAP connections no longer work. Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

Martin
