[slim] Limiting particular device to a subset of a library

2016-01-13 Thread Andy Hawkins
Hi,

My daughter has a Squeezebox Radio in her room, that I initially set up with
the 6 preset buttons pointing to some of her favourite music.

More recently though, she's worked out how to browse the music library and
started listening to other stuff she's found. Now she knows how to do this,
I figured it might be a good idea to limit the music she can choose in this
way. I envisaged being able to point her player to a different music
library, which contained links to specific albums in my main music library
perhaps.

I did look into this a couple of years ago, and found a page on (I think)
the Wiki that detailed how to do this. However, at the time this involved an
awful lot of work, IIRC setting up SQL queries and then making lots of
changes to the menus on a particular device.

I was wondering if any steps have been taken to make this simpler to
configure? I'm currently on v7.8.1, but would consider an upgrade to 7.9 if
it made things easier in this respect.

Appreciate any advice anyone can offer.

Thanks

Andy

It doesn't necessarily help you, but I also have a Nexus 5 running Android

[slim] SqueezePlay skips to next track mid-track

2014-10-21 Thread Andy Hawkins
Hi all,

Recently I've been finding that SqueezePlay will skip to the next track in a
playlist mid-way through a track. The SqueezePlay is accessing the server
remotely over the Internet if that's relevant.

What debug options should I initially enable to try to work out why this is
happening?

Server is 7.8.1~1413646184, running on Debian.

Thanks in advance for any advice and assistance you can offer.

I expected to have to enter the album data manually, but the online
sources popped up with the right information. Colour me amazed! How does
this work, given that the CD is my copy of a vinyl record?? is it simply
based on the combination of number of tracks and their respective
lengths? Does this generate a significantly unique combination that the
 data sources can draw on??

It could be matching against a 'fingerprint' of the music itself.

Isn't VortexBox linux based? If so, presumably you can so Software RAID?

It might be as easy to build your own system based around an ITX

Make do without it at the moment, but that would be nice.

If so, where are the music files stored ? On a central computer/NAS, on
a computer/NAS per family member or on the portable device of each
 family member ?

Central NAS, all served by Slimserver. Snapshots of the entire library on my
wife's phone, entire library on 'my' MP3 player (which tends to get taken
with us on family trips).

If you have individual libraries, do you also have a need for shared
libraries which is common for multiple family members ?

That would also be nice, yes.

Do you have a need to keep track of playlists for each family member ?

Would be nice, but don't use playlists much.

Do you have a need to keep track of favorites for each family member ?

Would be nice, yes.

Do you have a need to keep track of ratings and playback statistics for
 each family member ?

Don't use this sort of thing at the moment.

Does each family member have individual players which only one of the
 family members mostly use ?
If so, should all players be controllable by everyone or do you want
access to certain players to be restricted ? In that case why ?

I'm assuming you're talking about networked players here rather than
portable ones. We have two Squeezeboxes in the house, one connected to the
system in the living room, and another Boom in the bedroom that acts as my
alarm clock and a Radio for listening to overnight. I also listen at work
via SqueezePlay, and on my phone via SqueezePlayer.

No need to restrict things as yet. When my 4 year old is a bit older might
consider a player in her bedroom. In that case, I might want to restrict
some of the music to prevent her playing it (Rage Against the Machine for
example!)

Does each family member have their individual remote control/smartphone
to control the players or do you also have remote controls which you
share between different family members ?

My wife and I both have Smartphones. I use mine to control the system
sometimes, but a lot is done using the IR remote to control the device (SB2)
directly. We own a Controller, but it dies as soon as you take it out of the
cradle so it's not much use!

How would your dream system work to work as good as possible for usage
of local music on Squeezeboxes and portable devices in your family ?

1 shared library available to all. 3 individual libraries that can be
browsed seperately by each family member if required (to give them access to
all the music, but allow them to browse their own easier if required).
Ability to restrict certain tracks / albums from playback on certain players
(no Rage Against the Machine in my daughter's room for example).

Would be nice to be able to automatically transcode the library from FLAC
(the majority of my library is whole-CD FLAC files) to Ogg (or another lossy
format) for syncing with the portable players. I do this with some Python
currently so it's not a deal-breaker.

It's not so hard as it might seem. You can hit 'Play' on the artist name to

If it were a setting in the random mix stuff, you'd just have to go and
select the artist afterwards anyway, so it's not like it'd save you much.

 transform.
I think that you should consider doing the transform server-side,
instead of sending the xml to the browser with a stylesheet reference -
not all browsers handle that well. The only issue here is that you have
to install libxml2, and I'm not sure if that's available on Windows or
 not...

As far as the actual output, I think it might be a good idea to put out
divs instead of tables, and put css classes on the divs. That way, you
could skin it using css, and provide different css according to the
 user's choice.
I'll work on that as I can over the next couple of days.

Thanks for that. This stylesheet was done pure to ensure that the data was
there and could be used via XSLT. It's by no means indicative of the actual
output I want.

As I said, my knowledge of XSLT is *very* limited, and when I started the
project a year or so ago I did ask for help on that side of things. I'd be
more than happy for you (or indeed a group of people) to 'take the reins' on
the XSLT side while I concentrate on the retrieval script.

Thanks for the input.

Ok, I've put an early alpha up. It can be downloaded here:

http://software.gently.org.uk/slimxmlcat/slimxmlcat-0.01.tar.gz

Included is a very simple XSL transformation stylesheet that will produce a
very basic list of albums and their cover art. I'd definitely appreciate
some help in making the output a lot better.

Basic usage:

./slimxmlcat.py -f test.xml -s localhost -c 9001 -w 9000 -x sample1.xsl

-f is the output file to generate
-s is the server name
-c is the slimserver CLI port
-w is the slimserver HTTP port (for retrieving the cover art)
-x is the style sheet to apply (optional)

For testing purposes, there is also a limit option (-l) which will only
retrieve a subset of the albums on the server.

Full usage information can be retrieved using the -h option.

Any comments appreciated.

[slim] SqueezePlay not pausing correctly?

2008-12-15 Thread Andy Hawkins
Hi all,

After 7.3 was release I upgraded my SqueezeCenter from SVN, and downloaded
the latest nightly of SqueezePlay. For the first time ever I am able to play
back using SqueezePlay as the player rather than having to use it to control
an instance of SoftSqueeze.

However, I'm seeing something odd when I pause playback. The audio stops,
but after a while (can't be much more specific than that, cos I'm pausing it
when I go away from my desk) the playback is resuming, but there's no audio.
As a result the playlist advances even though I've put it into pause (by
hitting Spacebar with SqueezePlay active).

I *think* I was seeing similar behaviour using Squeezeplay to control
SoftSqueeze, but wouldn't swear to it.

Anyone else seeing anything similar?

[slim] SoftSqueeze over the Internet?

2008-04-10 Thread Andy Hawkins
Hi all,

I'm sure I've had this working in the past, but can't get it going now.

I'm trying to get SoftSqueeze working on my work PC, so that I can listen to
music on my home system.

My home system's firewall opens ports 9000 (web port) and 9001 (CLI) over
TCP, and 3483 over TCP and UDP. A netstat on my work PC with SoftSqueeze
running shows connections open to ports 9000 and 3483.

When I run SoftSqueeze, the display appears to work, and if put music onto
the player via the web interface, the display on SoftSqueeze shows the track
information correctly. However, I get no audio, and the timer on the display
doesn't advance.

In the past I've used WinAmp to play on this machine using stream.mp3, but
would rather use SoftSqueeze if at all possible.

Anyone offer any advice?

[slim] Annoyance with stream.mp3

2008-03-13 Thread Andy Hawkins
Hi all,

I tend to listen to my music at work using 'stream.mp3' via Winamp. What
I've noticed happening recently is that when I reach the end of a playlist,
Winamp stops playing and disconnects from the stream.

The problem with this is that this removes the stream from the list of
players in the web interface, so I can't add any more music to it. I have to
hit 'Play' on Winamp (which starts it playing the last song in the playlist
again) and then add some more music via the web interface.

Is this a setting somewhere I can change? Or is it an oddity with Winamp?

I guess I could try Softsqueeze, but the last time I tried that on my work
PC it just wouldn't play for some reason, so I gave up and went with the
Winamp approach.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

[slim] Album Catalogue Creater

2008-01-28 Thread Andy Hawkins
Hi all,

I'm in the process of writing a two stage album catalogue converter. The
first stage use the CLI port to retrieve all the albums from the Slimserver,
and writes them to an XML file. The ultimate aim is to then use XSLT to
'transform' this list of albums into a nicely formatted catalogue.

The first stage is largely complete, I can create an XML file of all the
albums using a program written in Python (I've run it successfully under
both Windows and Linux, talking to my SS v7).

I'm looking for people who are willing to test this side, as well as
potentially help develop the XSL transforms to format the output.

Anyone interested? Post in this thread and I'll package the software up in
the next few days.

It's similar, yes. However, for one reason and another I prefer my approach:

1. Mine is cross platform

2. Mine talks to SqueezeCenter, and not direct to the database

3. Mine should be relatively easy to customise the templates, or to build up
a library of templates for people to choose from.

While I'm sure the other tool is excellent, I don't see any harm in having
an alternative.

As well as running Slimserver (503 albums with 7872 songs by 192 artists) it

It's probably not the snappiest solution, but it's very usable.

I would expect that pretty much the cheapest PC you could buy these days

[slim] Tracks occasionally skipped when streaming to remote players

2007-06-28 Thread Andy Hawkins
Hi all,

At work I use stream.mp3 to listen to my music collection from home.
Sometimes while playing through a playlist (I generally select an album to
play, and hit the 'Play' option on that album to build up a playlist
containing just that album) a track will be skipped completely.

The track can be played, cos if I go back into the web interface and click
'Play' on the track that it skipped, then it will generally play it. So that
leads me to think it's not a problem with that track in particular.

The only entries in slimserver.log that I see are several instances of:

Premature end of base64 data at
/usr/lib/slimserver/server/Slim/Formats/FLAC.pm line 281.

I suspect these are happening when scanning (my FLAC have ALBUMART tags
which are BASE64 encoded).

Any ideas anyone? Any extra logging I can enable?

It happens so infrequently that I can see it being a pain to track down.

 good stuff :)

Hmm...I'm not so sure. Just updated the bug with my findings.

In summary, one of the artists has re-appeared, but there are lots missing
(unless I'm misunderstanding how artists on compilation albums show up).

Hmm...(trying stuff out as I type this). It appears that artists that appear
on compilation albums don't get listed in the artists list.

The only difference between the way Sam Brown's albums are tagged (the
artist that has just re-appeared) is that her albums include an
'ALBUMARTIST' tag, whereas none of my others do (do to another bug I'm
waiting to be fixed - #4582). I have removed the ALBUMARTIST tags from all my
other
artists but left them in Sam Brown's albums so that I can tell if that bug
has been fixed or not.

I'll update to the latest SVN again and see if Sam Brown disappears. If she
does, I'll remove the ALBUMARTIST tag from her albums and see if that makes
her re-appear.

Will report back.

Hi,

   Andy Hawkins[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Will report back.

Ok, I've just done some tests, and updated the bug. For information, this is
what I've added:

Ok, I think this is related to the ALBUMARTIST tag. Due to bug #4582, I have
removed ALBUMARTIST tags from all of my albums with the exception of Sam
Brown (so that I can see when this other bug is fixed). It appeared that Sam
Brown was in fact the only artist that was missing (all the others are
artists that only appear in compilation albums, and hence aren't shown).

So, here's what I did:

1. Update to latest subversion - Sam Brown disappears
2. Remove ALBUMARTIST tags from all Sam Brown albums - Sam Brown re-appears
3. Put the ALBUMARTIST tags back in to all Sam Brown albums - Sam Brown
disappears again

This does seem to tie up with the other bug kdf mentioned (#4925), I'm
assuming that ALBUMARTIST is another contributor role, and that is what's
messing up the browse list..

Hopefully the fix for the other bug (once it makes it into Subversion) will
also fix the problem I'm seeing.

Make sense?
