[slim] SB3 faults, can it be fixed?
SB3 bought maybe 2004 or so. Used semi-frequently. I love it, and my Boom. Anyway, usual story I suspect. At first I thought my SB3 was totally toast, but I have narrowed the list of faults to two: * No VFD. Interestingly, the VFD did not degrade. It simply stopped working. Last I saw it light up, it was as bright as the day I bought the SB3. * The RCA outputs are very, very low. I have to crank my amp up to maximum to get a almost useable volume. The optical output appears fine. I have not tested the headphone jack. Is there anything that can be done, or is should I give up with the idea of seeing that gorgeous green display light up again? The lack of good audio out of the RCAs is a pretty big problem for me too, as I have only one optical input on the amp and use it for the TV (I am not much of an audiophile) I guess I could stump up the c. £100 for a 2nd hand unit, but I'm worried about how long it will last. For a light weight DLNA server, you can also check out http://sourceforge.net/projects/minidlna/. Re: [slim] Let's make the Squeezebox to the ultimate music discovery device!
I'm going to stick my neck out, but something has been bugging me for a looong time. You don't really talk about this, and it's one hell of a can of worms, but your talking about SqueezeBox improvements. So here goes. UPNP/DLNA client support. I love SBS as much as the next person, but with CPU horsepower in the player (Radio/Touch), you could conceivably include some level of UPNP support in the player itself. This would be a massive change, of course, from traditional SlimDevices Squeezebox, but it would get Squeezebox out to new people. SBS would of course continue to be the *correct* way to get music into the player, but UPNP would be available to more casual users. UPNP would be impossible on the non SqueezePlay players, but surely now it could be included. I would look at doing it myself, if I didn't have a day-job To briefly answer some of the other questions, I'm old fashioned and usually play whole albums. So my browsing needs are fairly simple. It's either albums or streaming radio, or maybe LastFM. I've recently started to use SqueezeCommander (Android prog) and absolutely love it. I only really listen to the Radio first thing in the morning, and find the controls and screen a pleasure to use. Otherwise if I'm in front of the thing I play with the Boom controls or grab the phone and use SqueezeCommander. I don't use the IR remote much as my eyesight is poor. I find myself using the web UI less and less, but it's great for doing general admin and making up playlists. Anyway, I'm interested to hear other thoughts on UPNP/DLNA. -- Aslak3 (SB 2, SB Boom, SB Radio) Aslak3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31977 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=80910 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Look at all the patches that have been release for Erland's Patch Installer applet -- those rely on the fact that the interesting stuff is done in Lua. What I was meaning was that the heavy lifting is all done in C/C++ code. To put it another way, if you rewrote all of the LUA code in C/C++ you would only save a small amount of CPU cycles because 99% of the time the CPU is running compiled code and NOT the UI or talking to SBS. The LUA code, is relatively speaking, light weight when compared to things like decoding JPGs or MP3. It might be critical, but it is simple for the CPU to do. Look at the analog clock screensaver for a great example: the LUA script is tiny. All the clever stuff, such as rotating the images that represent the hands on the clock, is done in C via SDL. There is no sense in writing that glue code in anything other then a high level interpreted language like LUA, IMO. I could well be wrong; I'm only vaguely familiar with SqueezePlay's guts, but that's how I see it. -- Aslak3 (SB 2, SB Boom, SB Radio) Aslak3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31977 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78465 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

It may sound contra intuitive, but this fat players are slowing the whole system down for various reason , mainly that the players do to much thinking by them-self and the server sits there waiting. And the use of a scripting language on a memory and cpu starved platform ? Should it not at least be some kind of assembler code or compiled code ? The slim devices has an edge when driven by a local server they are much more efficient. Hopefully the customize squeezeplay UI bug is kept alive, there are some good ideas there. I would like to turn of images for the playlist's on SqueePlay the NP screen can show it and album and artist views, but having to sit and wait for a controller to cache hundreds of tiny images for a playlist ? it's enough with one on the NP screen. So a wish for a more efficient and customizable squeeplay in the future. It can be improved/changed, there is wast differences between SP as seen on the first controllers and what we have now regardless of which version you prefer it can be changed. While I agree with some of your complaints, the use of a LUA in SqueezePlay is only as a glue. 99% of the time a Radio/Touch whatever will be running compiled code - it will be playing music files, or it will be decoding jpgs, or it will be scaling them for display, or it will be displaying text. Unless I'm very much mistaken, these functions are all done in compiled C/C++. LUA is just a handy way of rapidly (from a dev point of view) linking all these low level parts to get it to do something useful. IMO this is is a sound method for bringing the product together. My biggest complaint with SqueezePlay is the lack of customisation, and the fact that you can't configure as many things from SBS. At least on the Radio you can't change the size of the text, and this in particular is shameful.* But none of this, IMO, relates to the implementation. [slim] IR sensor problem with SqueezeBox v2
I've had a 2nd generation SqueezeBox for about 3-4 years and it's worked great until recently. Basically it no longer responds to the remote. It's definitely some kind of hardware problem because even at startup it wont respond to the right button to enter setup mode. I've verified the IR remote is actually working with a digital camera. Because its not under any kind of guarantee, and because I have little to loose, I've had the unit in bits and a friend of mine, who is a dab-hand with a soldering iron, has re-soldered the IR sensor on the display PCB. We tried this because the joints looked a bit ropey, but it didn't help. It's very annoying because otherwise the unit works fine. I would probably still be using it even without the IR remote functionality, save for changing my network over to WAP from WEP (and there is no way to configure the network password without the remote!) Has anyone got any ideas? I would really like to get it working again, as it would work great with the SqueezeBox Boom I recently purchased for another room in my flat. :) Lawrence -- Aslak3 Aslak3's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=31977 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=66144 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
