Re: [slim] Napster streaming bitrate

2009-03-20 Thread BrockStone

Ah, I was poking around with the controller but did not see the ability
to do that. Just looking now and it says the current song is 128kbps
CBR WMA.

Hmm...

Ya the sound was immediately muddy. I think they stream WMA here so
32kbps WMA is better than 32kbps with mp3, but still. Anything with
any bass or noise (I tend towards metal and industrial) sounds like
poo. Napster got back to me and said they do 'up to 128kbps depending
on the internet connection'.

I will do more testing

[slim] Napster streaming bitrate

2009-03-19 Thread BrockStone

Hi there,

I am VERY excited to see we can finally get a streaming music solution
similar to Rhapsody in Canada (come on Rhapsody, poor).

I fired up Napster tonightand was greeted with muted sounded boomy
music. I've googled around and poked on Napster's site but I can't
find where they say what bitrate they stream at.

All I can find is this...which sort of makes sense from how horrible
the streaming sounds:

Music - Napster offers a collection of over 4 million songs to
download. They are formatted as Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. This
adds compression and higher sound quality at lower bit rates compared
to MP3 files. Napster music downloads consist of 192 kbps bit rate
while the streaming rate is 32 kbps.

Just my luck...we finally get streaming in Canada, and it is quite
possibly unusable...I find 32kbps unconfortable for voice never mind
music :(

Anyone have any more information on this?

[slim] Internet Radio out after update

2008-10-11 Thread BrockStone

Haven't used my Squeezebox for a few weeks.

Fired it up, tried to update, failed, updated again, worked.

Now I can only seem to connect to about 10% of the internet radio
streams in Shoutcast, RadioIO, etc. These URLs are right and load when
I enter them on my PC, but timeout or have bad data when done from the
remote.

These aren't fly by night IR stations that change their URLs every day
(and I checked the URLs are right), Club977 80s, Chronix Radio,
etc

Anyone else seeing this? It's very frustrating. I'm going to have to
use my Ipod Touch in wifi mode to stream internet radio to my stereo
tonight as my SBR is semi useless like this. The problem with the ipod
connecting as a source is I can't get multiroom working nicely :(

Network is fully connected and strong signal. I've reduced my network
down to it's most simple (removed WDS etc) in case that was it. No
change.

This fails if connected to my PC as a source (Vista64) or
SqueezeNetwork directly. Locally streamed music from my PC works
still.

Stats:
Version 7.2 r2873

Receiver:
Firmware 47

Thanks for any advice.

Re: [slim] Controller doesn't reconnect to network after sleep - Please post your issues

2008-09-27 Thread BrockStone

I've had ongoing issues like this since I got my Duet right when they
came out. If I leave it for a few hours or days then come back, I
always have to go through gyrations involving unplugging receivers,
turning off/on the remote, and sometimes rebooting my router to get the
remote/receivers to get proper DHCP addresses.

Router is WRT54G in WDS mode with another of the same, both running
DD-WRT. I never have DHCP problems with any other device on this
network, just the Squeezebox items.

My local network is 192.168.*.*, and when things fail the SB items get
ips of 169.*.*.* which is indicative of they couldn't get a proper
response from the DHCP server.

The consequence is basically such that whenever the SO wants to listen,
she has to get me to spend 20 minutes running around the house getting
everything going. Which really sucks.

I concur. Any news on this?

The fact that Rhapsody isn't available in Canada is very

Can someone in the know outline the technical details of why Napster
hasn't been done yet if they have that info? If we get steps perhaps
we can tackle them one by one.

Thanks

Re: [slim] How to verify sound output?

2008-06-08 Thread BrockStone

Volume verified @ a normal level on the receiver.
Firmware is updated via factory reset (was blinking white fast, etc) so
now matches the other one (23) on SqueezeNetwork settings page.

It's now connected like it was before, bright white, no sound from
either the optical or the RCA ports, don't have a digital cable to test
the third port.

The one it's sitting on top of is setup identically and works.

Anything else anyone can think of to try here before I send it back?

[slim] How to verify sound output?

2008-06-07 Thread BrockStone

Just got a second receiver. It's all setup, thinks it is playing...

I have the two receivers stacked on top of each other and set to
synchronize...can pull RCA cords back and forth. The old one outputs
sound, the new one does not. I do not have a digital or optical
capable stereo around to test them on, just RCA.

Seems the RCA output might be flawed right out of the box.

Any way for to verify/test this this weekend? Going to phone support
Monday obviously but curious on everyone's thoughts.

No sound comes out when it's on non-synchronized mode and just that
player is playing either.

Cheers

Re: [slim] Receiver not finding server anymore

2008-06-04 Thread BrockStone

Still no solution for this, it's driving me mad. Was working for a good
while, then just stopped. Network has been gone over with a fine tooth
comb...nothing wrong that I can see.

The problem is still that the receiver itself is getting 192.168.1.1 as
it's internal address for my SqueezeCenter, when that is the router. My
SqueezeCenter is at 192.168.1.103, which SqueezeCenter acknowledges in
it's status page.

I'd really like to pick up a few more receivers but until I can resolve
this it's just not worth it :/ Only having internet radio just can't
justify it.

Re: [slim] Receiver not finding server anymore

2008-06-04 Thread BrockStone

Progress report. Just factory reset the SBC. When it rebooted it then
said there was an update available. I updated it...it auto turned off,
then on, and voila, was connected to the SqueezeCenter on my PC
automagically! Happiness is here.

Then I realized the NAS wasn't on, so had to get SqueezeCenter to
rescan my archive...it did so, SBC still didnt see the updated tracks
so I turned the SBC off, back onand the original problem is back
now. SBC is connected, can see the SC machine name in servers, but the
SBR can't find my PC when that server is selected. It can find
squeezenetwork fine for internet radio, etc.

I give up for tonight. All this is doing now is making me cranky :)

Re: [slim] Receiver not finding server anymore

2008-05-24 Thread BrockStone

You are misunderstanding.

The SBR has it's IP just fine (as outlined in my original post). The
problem is the IP that it THINKS the SC is at is mistaken. The SC has
a valid IP, but the SBR is told that the SC resides at the router, not
at the PC that it is actually on.

I've done numerous factory resets, reboots, logging into the SBR using
the perl tools to manually set the SC IP, nothing.

ds2021;304606 Wrote:
I believe the SBR gets its IP address from your router and not from
SqueezeCenter. It should have its own IP address and not that of SC or
 the router.

This seems to be a networking problem. Try forgetting your network on
the SBR, rebooting, and reconfiguring the network settings. If that
does not work, try a factory reset and reconfiguration. You should also
be in touch with Logitech technical support.

OK I'll give them a try.

The odd thing is my SBC sees the SC, it's just the SBR that does not.

I've gone over the network with a fine tooth comb, everything is as it
should be. The SBR is just plain out getting the wrong IP for the
squeezecenter server. I just need to find out how/where it gets that
from and I can diagnose this further.

Thanks for the reply :)

Re: [slim] Receiver not finding server anymore

2008-05-21 Thread BrockStone

Ah I figured lots of experienced people here may know the answer, hence
why I asked here. The odd part is it was working for a while, then
stopped.

OS is Windows XP
Network config is a standard internal LAN with a router to the outside
world, nothing special other than a WDS router in the mix but that was
there before.
Latest firmwares and latest SC.

Anyways, my main question wasn't please help me solve it, it was
where does the SBR get the IP for the SC from? It must get it from
somewhere. Autodiscovery? From SqueezeNetwork? Where-ever it's being
sent from or fetched from it's wrong and that's what I'd like to find
out. In my experiences tech supports are relatively poor at helping
with specific questions like that.

Cheers

[slim] Receiver not finding server anymore

2008-05-18 Thread BrockStone

Hi there, my SBR is not finding my SqueezeCenter anymore.

Nothing has changed with my network that I know of. I've reconfirmed
this several times. When I use the perl tools to discover the settings
on the SBR it invariably has a squeezecenter_address of 192.168.1.1
which is my router, not my Squeezecenter which is at 192.168.1.103.
SqueezeCenter status on the PC shows it thinks it is at 192.168.1.103
properly. The SBR light is blue and it can connect to SqueezeNetwork
fine and play internet radio, I just can't connect it to the PC (no
firewall on the PC, entirely an internal LAN).

What tells the SBR where the server lives and why would it be telling
it wrong?

Still playing around, but this is very frustrating and maybe someone
else has seen the same problem before?

Thanks

[slim] Quite upset - Rhapsody!

2008-04-06 Thread BrockStone

So I started the free trial for Rhapsody from my controller for my Duet.
Been using it the past week and am quite thoroughly addicted to having

Went to sign up...US customers only?

Wtf?

Perhaps Logitech should have a wiki or something that can be kept up to
date as to what services can and can not be used outside of the US.
Just annoying that I'm completely addicted to and used to it now, and
then can't use it. I'd rather have not had it at all.

On that note, anyone know of any on-demand streaming music services
that ARE available to outside the US?

Thanks

[slim] Will a duet work?

2008-03-30 Thread BrockStone

Hello all,

I tend towards the SB type open source model, I like it. The Sonos
looks attractive but I'm not sure I need to spend that $, plus the
plugins for the SB definitey looking appealing. After reading a bunch
of the forum today I have a few questions before I pull the trigger on
a Duet.

1) I have a large house. If I have 4-5 receivers running will streamed
music be synchronized across multiple rooms? (useful for party hosting
situations) I've seen numerous answers on this and would like one
definite answer. The things I can see streaming are local mp3s/FLAC,
Shoutcast internet radio streams, and sirius radio (canada). From what
I gather it may be able to have some types of streams synced and others
not? Obviously some rooms will be able to hear the music from other
rooms so synchronization is VERY important.

2) How many different streams can be going at once? Is the limit
simply bandwidth? How is what is playing on each receiver set? Does
the remote know about each receiver and you set the music on each that
way?

3) I've seen hints that it cannot stream Sirius Canada streams, this
would be a shame. True?

4) Any chance the remote headphone jack will be usable one day? It
would be handy to toss the remote in my jacket and use it while out
working in the yard. Or line out from the remote into a portable boom
box that I could place at rendom locations where-ever I was.

Thanks for any advice. I'm excited to order one once I finish my
research. I'm conversant in perl among other things so I'm also
looking forward to poking around at some development :)

Cheers

so there you have it. The Rhapsody limitation is not a technical
 one,
but rather due to licensing afaik.

Thanks for all of the answers. So I guess I'd like to ask for two
clarifications...if someone could try these (if a definitive answer
isn't known) that would be fantastic. Will Sirius radio streamed work
in synced? And will shoutcast streams (ChronixRadio to be specific :)
be synced? I'm guessing shoutcast streams are mp3 radio?

I guess if NOT, then I can always save the streams ahead of time,
convert them to mp3, and then play them (for parties, etc) but that's
not really the ideal situation

Thanks
