[slim] Can a Harmony hub control squeezebox via IP?

2018-03-21 Thread DrewSB

I have a Harmony Elite with a hub. It can control devices with IP,
Bluetooth and IR. It seems to only use IR for Squeezeboxes. Is it
possible to make it use IP? I have my IR emitter in my AV closet and
would like to be able to control my squeezeboxes in the living room or
bedroom using the Harmony app on my phone.

Yes, it works. I was able to set up my Harmony display to list the six
presets with custom labels - mostly Napster channels. This lets me turn
on and play music without having to look away from the remote.

[slim] Radio no sound with Rhapsody on MySB, works on LMS. Expected?

2015-08-22 Thread DrewSB

My Radio works fine with Rhapsody at home with LMS, but now I took it on
vacation expecting it would work on MySquuezebox.com. It looks like it
is working, shows playback progress, but no sound comes out.
One time after I powered it on it worked and played one playlist but was
silent after that.
Any ideas for how I can get it working here?
Thanks

The wifi here has a splash screen on a browser when you first connect if
that makes a difference.

Think op specifically wanted player and GUI together . Otherwise there
are plenty of good control options for your phone or pad .
( I love the opposite having the GUI not on the player )

Jiveelite do emulate a large part of the squeezebox Touch or Radios
interface , but it's really only optimal for these small screens

I don't think so (haven't looked), just mentioned it because the
hardware is so inexpensive it can be used as a dedicated controller
without much thought. There are also many Lumias with built-in wireless
charging which is nice for this application.
In the case of using Android for the interface and the playback, what is
the preferred way to transfer the sound to the amplifier?

 Nice, good alternative.

There is also controller software on Windows Phone. You can get
something like a Lumia 635 for $40 or so unlocked and use that as a
controller.

Which issue? The Rhapsody issue or the single-track-for-Spotify one?
Technically possible: sure. Allowed by Rhapsody: probably not, they have
end-to-end encryption in their security concept, they have to assure
that. That's the whole reason for all this hassle.
I'm curious how this works with the app on other platforms. On Android
or Windows the stream can be captured when output, via Bluetooth, SPDIF,
etc. Is the Squeezebox in a contractually different category of devices,
or is the digital transport between the LMS and the Squeezebox
considered different than a SPDIF transport between a computer and a
DAC? Or is there anther difference I haven't thought of? :)

Thanks, I decided to try out Ubuntu server and it is working very well.
I was able to get LMS, CrashPlan, Subsonic and SMB sharing installed
without too much trouble.
The laptop is using about 10 watts idle and 18 watts streaming music
with LMS while backing up to CrashPlan.

[slim] NAS/SBS software for old x86 laptop?

2014-06-09 Thread DrewSB

Hi all,
I've been running a NAS / SBS on a Sheevaplug until recently when the SD
card died. I also have an older Core Solo x86 laptop with 2GB of RAM. I
was thinking of turning that into a NAS as it has a lot of advantages
over the Sheevaplug, not the least being the convenience of a built-in
keyboard and monitor for maintenance. My storage are two USB hard drives
formatted as NTFS, a 2TB and a 3TB.

My goals are:
1. NAS functions to back up files from my desktop and stream media to
XBMC. Straight SMB shares work for this, no need for UPNP, etc.
Hopefully support for NTFS.
2. SBS for a modest library.
3. Ideally a Crashplan client to back up my backups.
4. Low-ish power, the server will be idle 9/10ths of the time so it
would be nice if it could spin down the drives.

I looked into FreeNAS but it doesn't support my disks without
reformatting and seems to require a lot of tinkering to get SBS or
Crashplan to work. I could also just go with Windows 8 but I'd need to
buy a license and it may be overkill.

Any other thoughts on reusing an old laptop as a server?

Thanks,
-Drew

[slim] Squeezebox was attached to higher voltage PS - any chance of repair?

I have a Logitech UE Radio that was running Squeezebox Radio firmware.
It was briefly connected to a higher-voltage power supply and now shows

I have a voltmeter and am pretty good with a soldiering iron. Is this
something that has any chance of being repairable or should I put it in

Re: [slim] What's your favorite device for remotely controlling your Squeezebox?

2011-10-02 Thread DrewSB

Old Radio Shack 15-2117 JP1 remote is the most used. Always laying
around nearby, big backlit buttons, controls every device in my living
room (eight so far). Can skip through long lists by pressing the keypad
T9 style.

Next would be SqueezePlay if I'm on my computer.

SqueezeRemote on Windows Phone 7 if I'm in another room or want a
better browser than my IR remote. The main problem is that it takes a
few seconds to unlock the phone, start the app, etc. Usually easier to
grab the remote.

Re: [slim] SqueezeBox control app for Palm webOS devices

You all may be interested that Pixi Pluses for Verizon are being sold
unlocked for $55 on Amazon. I am getting one to use as a cell phone,
but for that price it sounds like it would make a great inexpensive SB
remote.

The Pixi Plus is a WebOS phone with a keyboard in a blackberry-style
format. The Plus version includes wifi so no cell contract is
necessary. You can also activate the phone on Verizon or Page Plus if
you want to use the phone capabilities.

Re: [slim] A rant towards a rescue. Needed. NOW. ... From here to where?

2009-09-16 Thread DrewSB

I am relatively new to Squeezeboxes after getting frustrated trying to
get my Tivo to serve as a reliable music player. I now have a Squeezebox
2 and a Boom, and have been very happy with both.

There are a few things about them that I think should be resolved for a
mass market product:

1. The need for a seperate server, or at least a seperate propriatary
server. The box should include a USB port or internal storage and be
able to use it. It should also be able to use external UPNP sources.
Perhaps indexing them in an internal database in the Squeezebox, ala
embedded shivaplug. The ideal solution would be an embedded
Squeezecenter, I really like the customization that is possible with
this software.

2. The seperation between SqueezeCenter and SqueezeNetwork. As a new
user, I was surprised that there was such a wall between these sources -
to the extent that the firmware will up/down grade between uses. I would
have expected that internet content would be served by Squeezecenter if
available, otherwise Squeezenetwork. Local music would be served by
Squeezecenter if available. I would be able to turn on the Squeezebox,
listen to Rhapsody, online radio, etc, and only need to turn on
Squeezecenter in order to make the local media menu items appear. I am
running SC on a NAS so I leave it on all the time, but for the typical
user running it on thier PC, it forces them to decide which server to
connect to before they can enjoy thier music.

[slim] Any reason why a SB3 playing FLAC out Toslink would sound different than a CD player?

Let's say you have a SB3 connected via Toslink to a receiver and are

sound identical to the same CD being played through a decent CD player's

Both players should be sending identical bits to the receiver, or am I
missing something?

[slim] Sync a split second off between SB2 and Boom

2009-05-05 Thread DrewSB

Usually sync works perfectly, but a couple times (like this morning) it
is a split second off. I have tried stopping both players and unsyncing
and then resyncing.

My Boom is connected to my Squeezecenter via Wifi.
My SB2 is connected to my Squeezecenter via a network cable.
The Boom started this morning playing an internet radio station as an
alarm. The synced SB2 started playing at the same time, but a split
second off.
The starting and stopping, unsyncing and resyncing haven't changed
this.

Any ideas?
