[slim] Getting no sound on BBC podcasts

2011-07-01 Thread Khuli

I added http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/iot/rss.xml to the
list of podcasts and all the available ones are listed perfectly. They
appear to play, but I get no sound - am I missing something? I'm
running Squeezebox Server 7.5.4 r32171
TIA.

[slim] Help with Replay Gain

2010-03-09 Thread Khuli

I have my mp3 tracks tagged with both Volume Adjustment and Album Volume
Adjustment, and have my SoftSqueeze player set to Smart Gain.

Needless to say it doesn't work - so is there some other setting I need
to enable?

Indeed so, although I've no idea why it doesn't use the created date.
It can be very annoying to have a lot of 'new music' listed just because

Offhand, I can't think of a single reason for a change in the modified

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the

Question: Which DAC do you prefer?

- SBR's Wolfson's WM8501
- SB3's Burr-Brown PCM1748E

It's probably one for a thread of it's own, but if 2 DACs convert an
identical signal at an identical rate, how can they sound different?
I always assumed any differences were due to different analog circuitry
on the output stage...

Either way, the file system creates a checksum when creating a copy of

[slim] Finally managed to get SB to wake my PC

to wake my PC from standby. I coudn't find the Mac address in the

The reason I couldn't find it in the network card properties was that
it wasn't there! Entering it into the 'network address' field made it
all work at last.

All I need to do now is find out how to make it go into standby, which
currently it only does if I tell it to :(

Ah yes, forgot about a tab for each.. still only totals 58mb though. I
would expect that having a process for each will avoid the bloating

Re: [slim] Stop the bloatware madness!

2008-08-07 Thread Khuli

Not commenting on the performanace of SC as opposed to any other
software, but as someone who fondly remembers the days of Spectrums,
TRS80s and the BBC Micro (still in my attic!), I can't help but recall
some of the quite amazing games (eg Elite), spreadsheets, databases etc
that packed a huge amount into 16 or 32k of ram.

I tend to agree with previous posters that using 100mb (over 3,000
times more than 32k) of memory does seem excessive. It's not
exclusively an SC issue, but programming efficiency generally seems to
have been abandoned as availability of RAM has increased.

don't think either is ideal since they may not be the same - it really
needs a search to be by tag info too. I have an Excel app that reads
tag info, so I guess I can use it to easily find duplicates.

The bitrate in brackets would be perfect!

I know what you mean about the length of paths... how about having a
fixed-length field and showing the start and end of the path if it's
too long?

e.g. D:\music library\Marillion\Marbles
D:\music library\Tom Pe..\Into The Great Wide Open

I would think that the path to the album would be sufficient, rather
than to the song, so this would keep it shorter.

One of the advantages for including the path is that it would make it

If displaying the path was optional, I'm not sure that nice formatting

There will always be artifacts - but they shouldn't be as bad as you
see it on your samples :-/. Are you running SC on a ReadyNAS?

Actually I'm not surprised to see this at all. It's often the case that
a picture with close horizontal lines (like the original) can just
happen to have them averaged out into wider stripes, rather than have
them merge to grey.

I't hasn't affected the text, and I'm guessing that 99% of your other
album covers aren't affected either. You may be able to reduce the
artifacts by changing the size of the original file a little - at some
optimum size, they will probably disappear entirely.

Re: [slim] How Add to Playlist?

2008-03-20 Thread Khuli

No need to keep saving the playlist until you have everything you want
in it (although you can if you like).

The active playlist is the list of songs in the righthand pane. Find
the songs you want and click '+' to add them to the list. You can then
save the whole playlist at once.

If you press 'Play' when you listen to a song, it will overwrite the
whole current playlist with that one song - I suspect this may be what
is happening to you.

Have you tried logging in to SqueezeNetwork from a web broweser to see

Apparently you don't have to fill in the details anyway, you can leave

If your files are mp3, you'll probably find the tags much easier to find
(and edit) with 'ID3Tag-IT'
(http://www.audio-toolz.de/download.php?id=70001) than with mp3tag.

Re: [slim] Operational Questions

2008-02-21 Thread Khuli

ceejay;271522 Wrote:
Just to add to Michael's answer - if you are accessing your music by
Browse Music Folder then Slimserver will ignore the tags and play the
files in alphabetical order. If you intend to use this method and want
the files played in track order, you should add the track number at the
beginning of the file name 01 - songname.flac

Just to add to Ceejay's answer - if you don't have any tags, Slimserver
will try to guess them from the filename (you can set the filename
format that it should use). If it can't match the format, it will play
alphabetically.

It's probably good practise to include the track number in the filename
- directory listings are more user-friendly, tags can be guessed, and if
you should delete any existing tags by accident you can can recreate
them direct from the filename.

Re: [slim] Can we avoid inflamatory titles?

2008-02-14 Thread Khuli

Is there any merit in the possibility of users here being able to 'Rate'
another user, or a thread, and after a suitably poor rating the thread
gets automatically locked, or the user gets some kind of penalty?
Perhaps people with a higher rating have more weight when voting, and
people with a poor rating cannot vote at all.

I appreciate that for the few casual posters who seem particularly
prone to flaming it won't make a lot of difference, but the
risks/rewards of long-term posters might be better served? Just a
thought.

Re: [slim] Party Mode for Squeezecenter

2008-02-11 Thread Khuli

I would suggest:

1. Pressing 'Play' on a track, inserts it at the current point in the
playlist and plays it immediately, before continuing on with the
existing playlist.

2. Pressing 'Add' adds a track to the end of the list as normal.

3. The saved playlist cannot be deleted. The playlist in use can only
be saved (with a new name) or abandoned. This prevents the original
party playlist being altered or deleted by accident.

Indeed. The manufacturer won't sell for less than the recommended
retail price, precisely because it cannot undercut its distributors (or
it soon won't have any). However, there is nothing to stop a distributor
accepting a smaller margin on a sale by selling below the RRP.

Note that this means that if the manufacturer and the distributor sell
for the same price, the manufacturer will make a bigger profit if you
buy from them rather than from the distributor...
