Re: [slim] Any new Squeezebox Devices on the horizon?

2011-10-19 Thread Metazargo

I simply wait for:

- A new version of the Radio with a touch screen like Touch.
- A new version of the Boom with a touch screen like Touch is nice to
have.

Will not buy another Radio of the current series.

I have one Duet, but I'm fine to use Touch for such 'hidden'
appliances. Still nice to have, a new version of a boxed receiver.

My personal wish for Radio:

- Temperature measurement In and Out
- Hygrometer In and Out

No need for a separate weather-station; one display less standing
around.

;-)

Re: [slim] Feature request: SqueezeboxCar having a Player and a Squeezebox Server Satellite

2011-09-08 Thread Metazargo

results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86053

Question: Would you buy a home integrated Squeezebox car appliance

- Yes
- No

Objective:

Have the complete music library of ~180 GB in the car without moving
and syncing an external disk manually. Control music by iPeng.

On board PC:

There are car barebones with WLAN around i.e.
http://www.ac-services.eu/shop/index.php?cat=c37_Auto-PC.html (there
are many others). But th effort in setting it up with a SBS and
creating a syncjob to sync with the music library on the NAS was too
much labor for now. On top the car built in screen isn't a touchscreen,
difficult to use anyway. Therefore a WLAN router would be needed in the
car to control a player by iPeng.

+ if you have modern screen(s) and even want to show in the back
videos... the battery is your limit ;-)
- much work

Squeezebox Touch with SD Card

Works really fine, not to say amazing. The SD card in Touch can be
accessed by a network share over WLAN. You find other threads here how
to connect the Touch to the on board 12 V
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=560413postcount=5.
Connect it to switched supply which is on the first key turn, to really
switch off the Touch when pulling the key. The sync job runs on the QNAP
NAS, which I could refine to run every hour, but first check if the
share is there.

+ not much work, anybody can touch the Touch
- a SD card with 64 GB and more is very costly. My car don't have the
ideal spot to place the Touch on the centre console. But when I get a
128 GB SD card for EUR ~250.- I will go that way. Control via Touch is
not as smart as with iPeng.

Use Smart Phone or Tablet

Currently I stick to my iPhone where I sync a reduced set of 22 GB. If
there would be an iPad with 128 GB why not stick to this approach. I
used a small iPhone charging station with a line-out mounted with hook
and loop fastener on the centre console.

+ I anyway sync my music to the smart phone or tablet, control with
iPod is nearly as good as with iPeng. If I leave the car there is
nothing to steal.
- Yet not enough storage space available on smart phones or tablets,
maybe in year. If a call comes or other things to be looked up as maps
it's less comfortable to handle.

Other Findings on Aux-In:

For a good sound quality it must by a line-in, and not blue tooth,
radio or tape solutions.

In my case it's astounding that a BMW board entertainment system
factory built in in 2003 doesn't has an aux-in; or after 2003 you need
a special contact to activate the aux-in, which normally only the
professional car dealer has.

I tried two smart kits (so called iPhone adapters) to make my on board
entertainment system work with external aux sources. Control of the
iPod on the iPhone by the on board screen and button was useless; this
may work when you have 50 tracks. You need the iPone, but some adapters
even disable iPod control on the iPhone itself when connected. I
returned those kits. I simply welded a line to the CD changer line-in
using a line switch. Material costs EUR 20.- and not 200.-.

If my car breaks I will only then get a new one with state of the art
touchscreen, blue tooth and more ;-)

On the road, highways, mountains, tunnels, even in suburbia 3G is often
not stable. And even reasonable mobile business flatrates have their
limits, somewhere at 500 MB every month. No real option in a car.

Yes, if you have mobile WLAN in the car :-) to access e.g. a barbone
with SBS running. A barbone could access the home WLAN and sync the
music library.

I even found a tutorial how to hook in a barbone into my onboard
navigation system. But this is too much 'hobby' for me, I wouldn't find
the time.

Or does someone knows a SBS on iPhone or iPad?

Currently I think I go for an iPhone or iPod Classic (with 160 GB just
enough space that I don't have to think about which music I shall sync)
sync from my media manager MediaMonkey.

But before a final decision I will test network sharing on the SB Touch
and find a good place for the Touch in the car.

I should have a better look at what I use, as I access music only on NAS
and MSB.com. Touch has nice features!

And in a way the touch would fit on the car console. I could use a
costly 32GB SD card (maximum Touch support) or an USB drive. I also
need to find a proper 12V to 5V 4Amp DC/DC power supply.

I would like that it just works by itself without manually copying the
music library on a USB drive.

pski;615559 Wrote:
the only missing piece is a cron run of rsync to make the touch have the
same music files as the home server

It would be great if an USB drive attached to Touch could be made
visible as a network share. By this I could run a cron job from the NAS
making a sync from the master music library.

See also here: 'Touch in a car'
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=560413postcount=5

For now I have to make a decision, maybe an iPod Classic with 160GB
disk is a leaner solution, where of course I have to sync it manually
on the workstation too. iPod Touch has unfortunately only 64GB, and so
does iPad.

[slim] Feature request: SqueezeboxCar having a Player and a Squeezebox Server Satellite

2011-03-03 Thread Metazargo

Everything is setup fine, in the house, but what about the car?

I can use a mobile device, as an iPhone, but this hasn't 150GB space...
I finally want the same, the identical music library like at home.

A SqueezeboxCar device would be a great new player, which could use an
external disk, with a copy of the home library and play it with a local
Squeezebox Server, a satellite. But better than a copy would be a sync.

Many people park the car in the range of their WLAN, so SqueezeboxCar
could automatically detect availability of it's parent Squeezebox
Server and sync the library.

I couldn't say which type the SqueezeboxCar should be, classic car
radio, replacement of the CD changer.

I would prefer the replacement of the CD changer controlled by a Touch
like screen. Or even that SqueezeboxCar would be a WLAN repeater
allowing control by iPeng.

I would buy such immediately.

My Squeezeboxes Radio, Touch, Controller do constantly bump between

switch in the evening to my local SBS.

Why? Thanks for advice how I can stop this, at least that the screen

On top it disturbs the remote control by iPeng.

Re: [slim] DLNA Compliance?

2010-08-16 Thread Metazargo

Thanks for reminding the DLNA standard, better said idea here.

In a way SB is DMS (SB Server), DMR (Radio, Touch, Boom... especially
the receiver), DMP (Radio, Touch, Boom...) and DMC (Controller and of
course iPeng).

The good thing, Squeezebox really works! Although only for music.

And as said the SB server is better, flexible, proofed then many DLNA
or better said UPNP ready media servers.

So why adding UPNP to the server? Just for the freedom to use other
playing devices. But I fear that the market, where Squeezeboxes make
the wheel go round, maybe wouldn't understand that.

I consider systems like JRiver as management software. Like with
embedded systems, today typically video players with included HD and
media server, you don't get any good results, outside a computer or a
television screen.

I.e. I manage my music data stored on a NAS with MediaMonkey. It's also
possible to link iTunes to the same network share, without doing any
harm (make the right settings) to the music data. The NAS, a QNAP also
runs a Squeezebox server and for convenience also a TwonykMedia server
a UPNP/DLAN DMS which serves photos and videos to our TV, but also to
the iPhone with PlugPlayer.

There are two key elements in such an installation:
One is the remote controller where we use iPeng on our iPhones; that's
really user friendly and quick. Just control music while you have
guests without any hustle! OK, if my iPhone is away, the SB Controller
let me do the same, half as fast as with iPeng.

The second is the NAS with the media servers. There it is important,
that I have a second NAS which makes a complete backup of all data.
Even less for the music, but all other data, especially our photos. In
the morning the NAS is off, and I switch my kitchen radio to
mysqueezbox.com.

It can combine (pair) playing zones into one music stream; the only

It provides easy remote control between local SS and online service for

It let's define the used separator (delimiter) of tags; i.e. semicolon,

Nevertheless, it would great, especially the last benefit, would be

I don't expect that Squeezebox Server is able to handle video itself,
not yet.

There are nice video streamer out there with HDMI, DVD/BlueRay, playing
videos from USB and network share, plus play audio form UPnP/DLNA.

And that's the point, when I have my Squeezebox Server running I don't
want to deploy also UPnP (i.e. Twonkey Media Server), but rather use
the existing Slimserver.

Where is the ultimate Squeezebox player embedded in a Video Streamer,
DVD BlueRay would be a plus ;-)
