Re: [slim] Which Streaming Music Service works best for You and your system?
Spotify is best for their huge collection and TIDAL is better for Hi-Rez (16/44). We have been having a problems here with TIDAL and it turned out to be very sensitive to DNS. Set up a good caching DNS server and TIDAL works much better. Also Qobuz is coming to the US and and they higher then CD quality streaming. There are a lot of new music playback software solutions out there now. Roon is a good one. But Squeezebox server is still great. Re: [slim] Sonicorbiter SE squeezebox replacement + Roon
I can give you some more info. This is a direct link to the product page. http://microjukebox.com/products/sonicorbiter-se DJanGo asked for more specific info. It's made in the US not Switzerland. It's running an iMX6 processor and a custom Linux OS. The hardware is built by SolidRun and looks similar to the CuBox. It has a much better hardware design then a Raspberry Pi. For example it has a PCIe bus and doesn't just have the Ethernet and other peripherals etc all on a USB hub like the Pi does. It's also RoonReady certified if you are interested in getting into Roon. The Sonicorbiter SE has a web interface to configure it. So you can select what player is attached to your DAC. You can choose - Squeezelite - mpd/DLNA - NAA (HQ player) - Roon player - AirPlay Your correct it doesn't have a screen like the original touch but I just use iPeng. This is a good product if you are looking for plug-and-play player plus the ability to use both legacy protocols like squeezebox and new protocols like RAAT (Roon). rip, tag, get cover art All you do is insert the CD! http://vortexbox.org agillis Lead Developer VortexBox agillis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21140 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104962 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Sonicorbiter SE squeezebox replacement + Roon
Our new Sonicorbiter SE can replace an existing Squeezebox. It runs squeezelite and you can attach a USB DAC to it. So you can use it with your existing VortexBox or microJukebox. But it does a lot more. - You can run LMS on it locally if you want. - It's RoonReady (first player to be certified by Roon Labs) so you can play directly to it from a Roon server - it can act as a DLNA renderer from servers like jRiver - It supports NAA from HQplayer The Sonicorbiter SE is basically the Swiss army knife of network audio players. I can see the player register with LMS and the infor go down to mysqueezebox.com. If I look in the players section of mysqueezebox.com I can see the player. 6. Look in the apps section in LMS. I just added another link to a real POGO E02. It costs $2 more but you know what your getting. The Series 4 would work ACCEPT you can't boot from the flash port. So you need to add a USB hub to get another USB port to boot your USB key from. So it costs twice as much, you need a USB hub, and it's half the CPU speed. Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30
The PogoPlug I'm using has a Marvell Kirkwood 1.2GHz (ARM) processor and 256 GB memory. You could run LMS on it if you wanted. I'm using squeezeplug as a base OS so this would be very easy to do. I never recommend running LMS on a unit like this becasue of problems with rebuilding a your libary, WMA playback, Spotify etc. Your much better off haveing a VortexBox and use the VAMP as a player only. As for wifi this would be required to make this a true replacement for the SqueezeBox. This unit does not have wifi so you will need to use something like a HomePlug adapter for now. I consider HomePlug more reliable then wifi but that is a discussion for another thread! I have a small wifi dongle that cost $8. I will be writing more articles about the VAMP and I may write one on wifi enabling it. I'm sorry the pogo is not available in Europe. Maybe I'll find a cheap way to ship them there! I would love to base the VAMP off something that is more widely available worldwide. I looked at the Pi but you need a case for it. That can cost almost as much as the unit for a nice one. Also only one USB port. The Pogo has 4 usb ports and comes in a nice case already for under $20! agillis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21140 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97721 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] UEML full version
There has been a lot of discussion on the replacement of Logitech Media players with the UE product line. Logitech has released a program called UE Music Library that is used for serving local music to the UE product line. UE Music Library seems to be a VERY stripped down version of LMS. I have been looking through the Logitech GIT repo and there is also a full version of UE Music Library. This has not been released by Logitech yet but it seems to be more like LMS. And it looks like it's designed to support both kinds of players. UE players and the old Touch, Squeezebox line! I think one of the Logitech devs talked about this a bit in another post. Since this the full version is not in the nightly builds I built an RPM version for VortexBox. Vortexbox is easy if it installs without problem on your machine (often doesn't); but is anything but easy if you have somewhat non standard hardware or if you want to introduce some minor option it isn't setup for.(e.g. something basic like install 2nd hard drive) Just go to the Vortexbox.org forum and check the solutions to problems that arise for users (And there are many). For virtually every one of them, the solution involves logging on with a command line program like Putty and writing/editing code. Example: http://vortexbox.org/documentation/how-to-add-a-second-drive-to-your-vortexbox/ So even user friendly' Vortexbox is way to geeky for most people. I only know one person besides me that would go anywhere near it, and he's definitely a computer geek. VortexBox lives two lives. One as the Geekey command line OS for hackers and other as the totally plug and play VortexBox Appliance. The point of the Appliance is like Linux powered routers you never need to know or care about Linux. You just use the web GUI to configure and use them. And unlike Windows you never need to deal with viruses, system slow downs etc. And to answer your question about adding drives you are correct the VortexBox GUI does not allow you to add a drive. This may not seem like a good idea until you read the Windows Home Server forum where a large number of the posts are about problems with adding and removing drives, partitions, and loosing data etc. With a VortexBox appliance you never worry about where your music is. It's always on the primary drive. But if you want to add a drive you can get geekey go to the command line and do it. VortexBox is the ultimate because it's as simple or as complex as you want to make it. Don't get me wrong Windows and WHS for that matter work great for a lot of people. For those who are interested, this is all managed with a PLC Crouzet Millenium XD26 so it's a bit smarter than cutting everything off : 1 push on the button turns external lights off, 2nd push turns lights off in peripheral rooms, 3rd and 4th push turns lights off in the all rooms. When turning the alarm on (=when leaving home), the sequence is automatic but at nigh, the external lights stays on for 5 minutes. When coming home (=when turning the alarm off) at night only, some lights go on automatically for some time. Imagination is the limit. It must be smart and transparent enough but eventually wife is happy. Shutting power off is therefore useless because I consume power to charge the battery later. In the worst case, batteries are empty when I need them. So I'd like to initiate a clean shutdown of the Radios as well. Any magic mechanism that the server send a CLI command before shutting down ? Thanks for your ideas. DLNA is becoming the de facto standard for media sharing so it makes a lot of sense that Logitech is using that instead of their proprietary server software. What Logitech really needs to do is make the Touch support DLNA not the Revue support Squeezebox Server. There are a lot of comments in this thread about the media world going to video. The dir 655 will have to be wired to my modem via ethernet. The questions I have are the following: I have a 200 ft. ethernet cable I'd like to connect the dir655 to from my modem. Although the distance is only 100ft from my modem to the dir655, I'd like to avoid cutting the ethernet cable in case I need the 200 ft. run for a later project. Will the wireless router be able to shoot a signal just as strong fed from a 200 ft. eternet cable as it will fed from a 100 ft ethernet cable? If an ethernet cable gets cut accidentally can I splice it back together? Is 300 feet for wireless squeezebox fringe range? My conditions are not ideal. The squeezebox is in a kind of valley below where my dir655 is so I imagine I'll have to point the three dir655 directional antenna's down towards my shack where the squeezebox is. Thanks for reading! The max distance of Ethernet is 100m. But this is only point to point over one cable run. So if you go say 200ft to an Ethernet switch or router then go another 200ft to another device that is OK. There is nothing special about Ethernet cable. You buy your own unterminated cable a put Ethernet jacks on it. That is usually what you do for long cable runs. The best solution is to use cat5 cable runs if you keep the runs under 100m. If you have to use wireless you need a big antenna to get that distance. Just pointing all the antennas toward one location doesn't do anything but reduce the signal you get in other directions. you need a directional antenna -- agillis rip, tag, get cover art All you do is insert the CD! http://vortexbox.org agillis Lead Developer VortexBox agillis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21140 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79322 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] OpenFrame remote for SB?

Having said that I can't find any detailed tech specs - are they available somewhere? Otherwise if there for a well written app to control SC on this I'd be very interested. I was hoping that SlimDevices would come up with something like this... like a giant Controller/Picture Frame. An iPad does though and the apps already work on it. Of course it's $499. -- agillis rip, tag, get cover art All you do is insert the CD! http://vortexbox.org agillis Lead Developer VortexBox agillis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21140 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=64373 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
