[slim] Squezebox Repair (Classic, Boom) in Australia??

2022-10-23 Thread bossanova808

Over the years I have collected a large-ish amount of Squeezebox
hardware - about 10 booms, 1 * SB2 (original device I started with -
still going, albeit with the case being a bit sticky these days!), and
about 10 SB3/SB Classics)

Of these, I have about 4 or 5 SB3s that are not working, and couple
booms. One definitely has a dead screen (was dropped, and I watched the
screen fade away very soon after) - but the rest all just failed in
non-specific ways (e.g. have dim red lights in the optical port). There
was a bit of a rash of these recently. I suspect the capacitors are
just dying of old age.

I also have two dead booms. And another few booms could probably do with
new screens. Probably half the booms could do with the speaker
re-foaming too.

So all in all, quite a lot of hardware well past its prime and looking
for some love. If I lived anywhere in Europe, of course I'd send them
all to Joe of the famous
https://joes-tech-blog.blogspot.com/2018/11/logitech-slimdevices-squeezebox-classic.html
etc. But realistically form Australia, I think the shipping will kill
me - although I am still tempted.

I don't suppose anyone knows of an Aus. resource anything like Joe -
even if they are not SB experts, just very good general electronics
repairers? As I continue to adore the ecosystem and resist
alternatives, I'd be willing to spend several hundred on all the
refurbishments (more if I get all the boom speakers fixed too)?

(I have at least some skills, but soldering/electronics is not really
amongst them, unfortunately. I'd certainly not trust any SB hardware to
my dodgy soldering attempts...)

Unfortunately I think the issue is with this specific router (Zenwifi

In the end I had to do the same thing (for two Booms) - but also for an
old wireless scale as well - so the solution of a legacy AP (separate
SSD, and mac limited to specific devices only) - was a good way to go.

Still an irritant that it is needed so I look forward to your
investigations!

Re: ASUS RT-AX55 Mesh Routers Compatibility with SB Radios

2021-08-28 Thread bossanova808

Using an AX88 + 1 node setup, on firmware 3.0.0.4.386_43181, I simply
could not get (multiple) booms to connect to LMS at all - they'd get an
IP from DHCP fine, and then consistently fail to connect to LMS - no
matter what I tried.

In the end, added back an old D-Link AP isolated to only offer wireless
for the booms. No issues at all with that set up, instant connection.

Very frustrating!

Re: [slim] ASUS ZenWifi AX (XT8) firmware upgrade disconnects my squeezeboxes

Thanks - that is currently ON for all three bands?

I did notice that Wifi Agile Mutliband was off - probably when I was
trying to get the booms to connect. I presume that should normally be
on?

I've only had a couple days with them so far...so to be fair, bit early
to be drawing conclusions generally, but the boom issue was definitely
frustrating. Didn't even occur to me to look here since I've been using
wireless faultlessly with SB stuff for 15+ years...sigh

Re: [slim] ASUS ZenWifi AX (XT8) firmware upgrade disconnects my squeezeboxes

2021-08-14 Thread bossanova808

Just got an XT8 setup (2 nodes) and ran headlong into these issues.
Could not get 3 * Booms to connect not matter what I tried. The would
connect to wireless, get an IP (visible in the Asus Network Map) - but
would _not_ connect to LMS itself.

Eventually, I added back a legacy D-Link Access Point to the network,
and made the booms connect to that. Instantly worked again.

Pretty annoying really as the point was to bathe the whole house in one,
single SSID, fast wireless solution...and to read that this is a problem
introduced by recent firmwaresigh.

A question:
One thing I only notice later and did not actually try was the 'Roaming
Block List' - given the players initially got an IP, I felt the issue
might lie somewhere in the roaming part of things - but I presume you
folks have tried block your SB equipment in there?

I actually got these for free due to a credit thing, but rather
regretting it all at this point.

I even found last night that a tablet taken from one end of the house to
the other had to be manually disconnected and re-connected to get good
wifi...I thought the whole point was that sort of thing happened
automatically?!

You can have your library on one One (internal hd) and the others all
pick it up across the wireles - indeed, it will also back up one One to

[slim] Scanner crashes on SBS machine, not Win 7 machine (same library!)

2010-08-28 Thread bossanova808

I have exactly the same music library on two machines (synced nightly) -
one at my work, on Small Business Server 2003 machine, and the other at
home on a Win 7 ultimate machine.

At home, on Win 7, this library scans perfectly.

At work, on the SBS machine, the scanner terminates unexpectedly on
directory scan. It does this in different spots (as far as I can tell
from the log) - and there are no useful messages in either the scanner
log or the main log. I have tried fully disabling anti-virus to see if
that has an effect (the AV is the same on both machines anyway) - this
does not solve the problem.

Latest server (7.5.1) - any ideas on how I can track this problem down
further, or what it might be??

Yes, same settings at either end and all the SS directories are
exccluded as are *.MYD and *.MYI files. The scanner crashes when the
AV is *completely* disabled.

Ok - Anti-Virus (Vipre) not running.

Logs - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/108804/SBS%20Errrors.zip (server log
going back months, and latest scanner log).

The last time I ran a scan was 28/08/10 - and there's no errors in the
logs I can see for those days

On the Win 7 machine, no crash, I get:
1320 albums with 18052 songs by 667 artists.

On the SBS machine:
1262 albums with 17279 songs by 1436 artists.

The error report is:

Music scan terminated unexpectedly (Directory Scan)

Re: [slim] Any video steaming servers with library capability, like SqueezeServer?

2009-11-16 Thread bossanova808

Ok the obvious solution to the is XBMC - excellent library system and
will do exactly what the OP asked.

www.xbmc.org

Run it on an ASRock ION330 using the XBMCLive linux install - it's
really easy to set up (guide here
http://a8t8.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2518DD508BB713E8!804.entry) and it
will auto-scrape all your movies and TV shows. Plays pretty much
everything, ISOs, avis, and mkvs all no problem. You can manage the
library in XBMC itself or use various tools (Media Companion, TVRename
etc) to manage the library on the server.

Or you could just use Orb instead - I use this for local playback at

trivially easy to set up.

Of course you lose the groovy iPeng interface but for just playing an

Overall I do find IRBlaster unreliable - it seems to get out of sync
with the player at times, requiring a server/client reboot to get it
all in sync again. So I am not 100% sure of the above being true at
all times but in my testing that's what happened, so perhaps there is a
difference in how you send volume commands that can help you work it

Re: [slim] Album Art Aggregator - gone bye bye?

2009-01-21 Thread bossanova808

The Album Art Downloader mentioned above is indeed very good - it kind
of hides its functionality though. At first it looks like you have to
do it one by one, but if you look in the menu it has a file browser
section. You point this at your music folder and it scans everything
you have in one go and shows which albums are missing artworkand
then can send of mass searches for them.

It does everything AAA does, and better, and is being actively
developed, so I've switched. I found tonnes more with it than with
AAA, some of the awkwardly named things it had no trouble with at all.

So - AAD but make sure you dig up the file browser or it looke
crappy...

not seem to be passed on to the amp at all. I presume this is because
IRBlaster is not able to intercept and add to any IR signals.

(I'd also vote for Album - Year - Artist if asked!)

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-01-15 Thread bossanova808

1. Ok, not really a big deal just would be a bit quicker and more
impressive in demos if it is instant!

2. Yep, I have IR Blaster doing the volume thing to the amp. My point
is once this is set up, the vol control on iPeng is fixed at 100% and
you can't control the volume via iPeng, so I need to keep the
squeezebox or amp remote around. Would be nice if iPeng could cope
with this, but probably hard to implement in a really 'neat' way. But
super handy if you could as a lot of audio people (ie iPeng users,
gadget fiends etc!) much prefer not to use the digital volume

3. Zapping (which you do by holding down the '+' (i.e. add) key for
about 1 second) by default adds the currently playing song to the
zapped songs list - it's basically like a quick collection in Lightroom
if that means anything to you - and handy spot to store a list of things
you can build on the fly. Because of this quick collection, you can do
many things - in my case, Custom Skip will skip any tracks in that
playlist if they are ever added, so it is very easy to eassentially
remove a track from your library (without actually deleting anything).
I know other people use it to mark tracks that have bad tags, as another
example. Lots of things can be done with it, and it would be great to
have a zap button somewhere (maybe around repeat/shuffle would work? A
little lightning bolt maybe?)

4. You are welcome!

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-01-15 Thread bossanova808

pippin;385231 Wrote:
 Yes, I remember the discussion.
HOWEVER, my understanding at that time was, that IRBlaster would
completely take over the volume control and doing volume changes
through the slider would indeed be translated into Volume up/down
 commands.

This is different from what is described here and then there's your
issue using your SB's IR remote.

Is there maybe a problem with IRBlaster and the current SC versions?

Hmm. I have IRBlaster working fine with the standard squeezebox IR
remote. When I push volume up/down on the remote, the SB volume stays
fixed but the amp goes up and down in volume, as wised and expected. I
don't need to use the web interface.

It actually works a bit with iPeng too, but gets out of sync quickly
and can easily get into a state where the amp is set to zero volume and
no amount of playing with the slider will bring it back. But I think if
you had basic up down buttons sending basic up/down signals, it would
work!

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-01-14 Thread bossanova808

1.0.5 - the a to z list is much easier to use and hit correctly now.

A few suggestions/queries...

1. I use iPeng at work and home on an iPod touch. It seems to lose
the cache for each server as I go back and forth. Any chance it could
use a cache per server and not therefore need updating? Actually, this
may be because of automatic overnight rescanning - does this cause a
cache rebuild each time?

2. Volume control does not work for me. The slider isn't great
(probably because it is near the edge), but at my work I use an amp to
control the volume rather than digital volume control on the SB - and
this doesn't work with the volume slider properly as SB's volume is
fixed. Any chance of providing a volume change mechanism for people
with amp volume control (mine works via an IR cable from the headphone
socket to the amp).

3. Zapping songs is missing. I use zapping with custom songs to
essentially remove bad tracks from the library. Would be great if
there was soem sort of zap mechanism in iPeng as people use Zap for
quite a few things...

4. Just wanted to say overall it's an excellent app and easily worth
the dollars!

Re: [slim] Adding a Popcorn Hour to my Squeeze system

2009-01-10 Thread bossanova808

For those having stuttering issues with 1080p (or even 720), it may come
down to how you are streaming your content. If you stream over http
rather than smb (using the free my ihome server), you get almost doule
the bandwidth of smb streaming. This makes 1080p no problem, 720 no
problem, and much improves FF/RW performance.

[slim] New SB3 Display Corruption

2008-06-24 Thread bossanova808

I just got my third SB3. This one is a bit funny though - when I first
plugeed it in I I got the Logitech logo and then strange square blocks
on screen, and I couldn't get a response from it to configure it.

So I pulled the power cord out, got the logo again and while that was
on screen hit the power button or an arrow, can't remember, and got the
usual config screen...but it seems like the firmware is a bit corrupt.

I tried the re-program Xlinix thingy and that did not work.

It seems to be working fine but it isn't ideal...any ideas?

[slim] AAC not working - Small Business Server?

2008-05-15 Thread bossanova808

I've got two SqueezeInstalls going on - one at home that is based on
6.5.2 currently and everything works on. I've just set up a new
install od SqueezeCenter seven on my work server that is running Small
Business Server 2003 on it.

It mostly works, but it won't play (non copy protected) AAC files that
play fine on my home install. As I understand it these are played by
calling mov123 and piping the output to flac - is it possible that
one/both of these is not friendly with SBS?

It's no major drama - I can always manually convert a few files from
m4a to flac if need be, just thought I'd see if anyone knew of a
solution before I head down that path...

Be nice if the Slimsever installer checked for these things and at

leastrather than just not playing anything.

Re: [slim] Australians being screwed on price??

2008-02-07 Thread bossanova808

Cut mvalera some slack - they're about to launch a major new product and
likely they're all a bit tired and on edge.

Sure he could have phrased it better but ultimately he's right and you
all know it. Pricing will *always* be set by what the market can bear
and if you think otherwise you just don't understand the world you're
living in.

As an Aussie, it's worth pointing out I paid $248 Aus dollars
(delivered and inclusive of GST) for my last SB3. That's a reasonable
price in any market and even at the standard price here (around $310)
the device in incredible value.

Likely the duet will very quickly be discounted similarly. If you pay
full retail for electronics in Australia you're monumentally lacking in
the brain department.

Have you never written a forum post you didn't phrase the best? Cast
the first stone and all that.

(I also query the Sonos is selling wonderfully in AU thing. It's a
whole different price league and I've seen online stores claiming to
have 100 squeezeboxes in stock at particular times, so I'm guessing
they're moving quite nicely).

Re: [slim] Video streamers??

2007-04-13 Thread bossanova808

I have a Zensonic Z500 video streamer.

The company is now called Ziova - http://www.ziova.com

The device is not nearly in the same league as the squeezebox (in terms
of reliability, build quality, or slickness), and it's taken many
firmware upgrades to get to this point, but overall it is now a decent
video player for both optical media and streaming media.

It now very rarely crashes or hangs, maintains sync almost all the
time, to be honest has few practical problems. I only use it for video
playback, have completely ignored its other features.

Annoying lag the first time you fast forward a file, and a bit slow to
boot, but the video quality is excellent on our 42 plasma and overall
the device works well for downloaded telly etc.

I have one server that serves both the music and the video, it's quite
beefy which I think helps, there's never any lag due to the server.

Until recently (Frimware 1.6.1) I would not have recommended it
overall, but now I would. Although it's picture displaying abilities
(ie slideshows) are still rubbish, which is the one other thing I would
like to use it for. But for video, it's really pretty good now, we use
it nearly every day with success.

If you want to know anything about it, just ask.

[slim] Re: Ideas for Squeezebox 4

2006-12-09 Thread bossanova808

Media servers with thin clients are the way of the future, discs are
dying, hopefully soon to be dead.

While having some sort of mode to play local media might be useful to a
few, it goes against the whole ethos of the slim design and to my mind
would be too big a shift. Why not let the billions of NAS device
makers come up with something that does this over ethernet (and is a
little more powerful than current options) - leave it to them - this is
their area of expertise. With one of those and a basic network, you've
essentially got what you want, no?

I'd *much* rather see a bigger, better screen, a better DAC and general
audio improvements, and maybe a TV/VGA out for album
artwork/lyrics/visualisation (not as something required, just optional,
and still streaming from a server). Having an optional TV/VGA out
keeps the basic screen available for browsing etc (and complete
operation WITHOUT a TV, very important), but the TV out DOES open a
world of possibilities for visualisation and general prettiness not
currently available, and probably not available without making the
device itself much more expensive IF you go for a much better screen in
the device itself. Even if people do NOT want a TV where there music
is, they can choose to pop a small LCD into their stero area for
visualisations instead, or live without.

Ethernet in every room is the future. It's so flexible - we've just
added a streaming video player and while it's not without bugs it too
is a major step forward. It ties into everything - basically, all our
media comes from various sources (video cam, downloads, online stores,
etc) - it's centralised and processed/cleaned up. And then it's
available to everyone all over the house through thin clients, 24 hours
a day, based off of one relatively powerful (but quiet) server. Not a
NAS because I can't find one powerful enough to keep things super
zippy.

This is a FANTASTIC way to live and make your media available - very
very flexible, and you find yourself using things in all sorts of new
ways - and you don't need a big, expensive, noisy PC in each room.
Just the appropriate low power, quiet, clients ou want in that room.

[slim] Confused about Zap

2006-11-18 Thread bossanova808

Ok, I'm a bit confused about the 'Zap' functionality, and I can't find
much about it in the docs/faqs/wiki. I can't actually find anywhere
that says what exactly happens to zapped tracks.

Am I right in thinking that if you Zap a song, it will then not be
played again under any circumstances - i.e. it will appear in the
playlist if added but be skipped when it comes up? Or does that
require the skipped zap songs plugin? Does this survive a database
wipe/re-scan?

I generally control slimserver using the default web interface in our
office, rather than the remote. Is there any way to zap songs using
the default web interface? Could this be added with a simple change
somewhere?

Ideally, I'd like to be able to add all tracks by an artist to a
playlist, and as it plays, knock off any tracks I don't like - leaving
me with the ability to play all the tracks by an artist without the
ones I don't like appearing...and do all this, preferably without a
playlist, as others don't tend to navigate to the playlists.

Cheers
JD

[slim] Missing info in now playing web interface

2006-11-08 Thread bossanova808

Hi Folks

Minor glitch in my system here I can't puzzle out - I have the 'format
string' set to :

TRACKNUM. TITLE (from ALBUM by ARTIST)

in both server settings/formatting
and
player settings/title format

Now, this appears to work correctly on the squeezebox itself, but most
of the time I control the music from a PC (the squeezebox is upstairs,
I'm downstairs in the office).

On the web interface, I am missing info on the right hand side, the now
playing side.

I get:
Small (from What Sound)

Not:
Small (from What Sound by Lamb)

The data is in the database correctly, the tags are correct and in the
file as Id3 v2.4 and ApeV2.

Any ideas??

[slim] Re: 6.5 Slim

2006-08-29 Thread bossanova808

In all cases where duplicates have occurred I've found the problem was
ultimately with tags. It's taken a LONG time to get them all 100% ok.
It's tiresome, and sometimes they change the way tags are read so
certain things are made obvious that weren't before, but with proper
tags I don't think there is a duplicates bug as such...not one I was
unable to solve by using either ID3 v2.4, Apev2 or Flac tags correctly
(this includes using compilation=1 tags on compilations).

As for quoting some fantasy Aussie law, let me give you the example of
the Aussie company Zensonic - they're media players have heaps of bugs.
But nobody is holding them accountable - yes, you can get a refund if
you can convince your retailer yours is not fit for purpose and given
their extravagant claims, that isn't so hard, but most people who've
bought one recognise this stuff is (relatively speaking) cutting edge
and going to come with some problems.

In fact, Aussie consumer law is highly variable across states and
geared quite definitely towards the retailers.

You should try being constructive and working with people to solve the
problem, you'll get a lot further ...

[slim] Firefox rendering problem...

2006-05-29 Thread bossanova808

On my laptop, I browse Slimerver (with the default skin, 6.2.2) in
firefox 1.5.0.3 and certain buttons are missing - most notably the
playlist buttons (save, clear etc). Also, when browsing through the
music library, if I click on an artist or album or whatever, the right
hand pane disappears.

Everything is fine in IE, and on two other computers with firefox
installed. I don't have many plugins, and none on the laptop that
aren't on the other machines.

Any ideas?

[slim] Second disc not coming up in New Music

2006-05-24 Thread bossanova808

Ok, I recently added classic German speed metal albums
'Keeper of the Seven Keys' parts 1 and 2 by Helloween
to my music folder (on an infrant ReadyNAS, 6.2.2)

(As MP3s, tagged with ID3v2 and APEv2). No multi-disc tags set or
whatever.

They're done as separate discs (they were separate releases after all)
- All is working well in Browse artists - both entries appear as
separate albums.

However - only the part one comes up in the New Music list after a
(complete) re-scan.

It's a very minor issue, but I'd say its a buglet. Anyone know why
this might be, or have a similar experience?

Even though the music has been there for several days, it has this
morning magically appeared for the first time in the new music list
(about 4 albums above the part 1 entry, added at the same time, and
above music added later). I forced a tag re-write in MP3Tag and this
seems to have done the trick.

I had the re-scan plugin set to on..but its been doing this every
night. Must have been some sort of tag issuebut both albums were
done the same way so it's a strange one.

[slim] Re: Moose 0.25 now up

2006-03-05 Thread bossanova808

As usual, it's definitely moving in the right direction - the UI side of
it is way, way improved over a couple of months ago.

The two biggest problems are lack of support for Various Artists, and
the fact it regularly crashes slimserver if one loads up a REALLY big
playlist (eg. I have one I made for New Years, it spans 25 pages on the
slimerserver web interface - if I start Moose while this is loaded up,
the music stutters and then soon after the server crashes).

It may be this would work fine on a really responsive server rather
than my readyNAS.

I'm really looking forward to a bugfix release of slimserver, and then
the mySQL version after that, will be interesting to see how that
affects performance on the NAS.

Thanks as ever for your fine work

Cheers
JD

I can't definitively narrow down the slow down issues - it seems to
happen on a regular basis though, say avery few mins, perhaps when you

bugs in that it sometimes disappears, flickers regularly etc, so I'd
look there too.

One question - often when adding albums (but not always) the tracks all
get added, but in the wrong order - any idea why that could be??

2006-01-25 Thread bossanova808

Hey Doc

No, the flickery loop occurs when playing just a single album...not too
often but definitely conisistently. I'll see if I can narrow down what
triggers it but it ges very slow, sluggish and re-draws multiple
times.

It definitely seems very slow when getting the multiple albums - it
doesn't seem to be getting the album art for the off-screen albums,
just the same general slow re-draw problem.

Unfortunately I don't have access to the sqllite db as the server is on
a NAS in a custom install package. It's not a big deal, usually it
works fine second scan - it was not happening until 0.21 or
thereabouts, though.

There are definitely still times when Moose grabs the system and causes
general slowness/flickering - it does seem to get into some sort of
aggresive (but slow) re-draw mode.

BUT - it's great overall and none of the issues are by any stretch show
stoppers!!

[slim] Re: Announce: Moose 0.21

2006-01-24 Thread bossanova808

Hi Doc

Ok, after extended use, this one is defintiely much improved in terms
of performance, although it still occasionally causes some general
sluggishness (mainly with the library window open) and sometimes the
'Now Playing' window gets itself into a flickery loop.

After a re-scan it seems to be in a state of getting ALL album art for
all files as no artist is selected, think this isn't a great idea. I
am also getting regular 'db is locked' messages the first time I try
and scan, then it goes through fine. And I still get the odd
slimserver crash for inexplicable and not consistently repeatable
reasons when using moose (usually just after a re-scan).

But overall it is working very well - multi selection in the play list
window will be great, good luck with getting that going properly, I
remember well when I used to be a programmer that could be tricky.

Cheers

JD

I too am having problems with the CPU being pegged, mainly with the

[slim] Re: Announce: Moose 0.21

2006-01-17 Thread bossanova808

Hey Doc

Good work as always - the minimise to tray is handy (although its the
only app I have in there that needs only one click to maximise again -
maybe you want to change that to the classic double click?). Hmmm -
Would be great to have one click access to a pause feature (while
minimised) as an option (for answering the phone!).

Now, about cover art - how does this actually work? I had it working
fine when I was scanning the files, but now I am scanning the db and it
has stopped working. I do not have slimserver scan for artwork as I'm
running it on a NAS, but I can change that if necessary, however I
didn't think Moose needed that? I presumed it went and got the
thumbnails directly.

Anyway, thanks as always for your work, I seem to be able to play
everything now that is using IDs, not more crashing slimserver due to
dodgy filename issues, which is great.

Cheers
JD

[slim] Volume goes up skipping forward in Moose

2005-12-29 Thread bossanova808

Using Replaygain (on track gain setting at least), whenever I skip
forward in a track (using moose's very handy song bar), the volume
suddenly shoots up as if replaygain is being ignored.

Using an SB2, feeding of an infrant readyNAS running 6.2.1

with the latest version of moose, slim 6.2.1, or somehow particular to
my setup.

Can anyone else reproduce?

[slim] Re: New build of Moose (windows front end) now up

2005-12-08 Thread bossanova808

Ok, have been playing some more with Moose. Here follows a long list
of thoughts and suggestions, which you are free to take on board or not
as you see fit, I am very impressed with the work so far in any case,
these are just a few things that might improve the experience a bit.

I am browsing by files, not sql at this stage, as I can't get access to
the SQL file on the readyNAS side of things (have requested over there
that they offer that and they seem to be amenable to the idea).

First found a bug - I can't add a José González album via the moose
interface but can via the slim web interface squeezebox. However
once I do so, it then appears fine on the Moose interface. I suspect
this is a funny chars in file names issue, let me know what I can do to
help you solve it.

I definitely think a tray interface would be great - pause, volume,
skip would be essentials I think, plus a mouse over current track or a
fading pop up thingy when the track changes.

A display somewhere of the current replaygain value would be great too,
help diagnose those tracks missing info issues that crop up
occasionally.

I really miss the New Music display from slimserver.

I do think a combined library/now playing list single screen approach
might work, or at least separate task bar entries for each window would
really aid swapping between them.

Right click functionalities would be great where appropriate.

The control icons in the bottom right of Now Playing could be bigger.

I don't get the thumbs in the album list either but then I generally
only have cover.jpg in there, not thumbs. Maybe somethign that scales
the cover.jpg if thumb.jpg is missing would be good?

Some streamlining in the way the playlist is sent back to the server to
reduce a bit of lag and flicker might not go astray if possible.

Again, thanks for your work and these are just ideas/suggestions!
JD

2005-12-08 Thread bossanova808

Ok - new music sorting by date - was not working for me because I just
moved the whoel collection from a local server to the NAS hence the
change in tiem stamps. That will work fine in future though I am
sure.

I am not using 6.5, 6.2.1 is what they are up to over in readyNAS land.

My folder structure is:
M:\Music\José González\2005 - Veneer\Tracks.mp3 (...)
M:\Music\José González\2005 - Veneer\cover.jpg

I haven't used the CLI myself so I am not sure about the ReplayGain
info being available, would be very handy though!

Thanks again, I'm really enjoying using Moose,

Hi

Just wanted to say - excellent piece of work. I run my system on a
readyNAS system, which gives an excellent responsive experience from
the squeezebox but lacks a little speed when using the web browser end
of things. With Moose I have super speedy control on both the PC and

I reckon you should make the core controls (play stop etc a bit bigger,
and embeddable on to the Taskbar one day would be awesome!)

but just wanted to thank you for a very nice piece of work.

Just wanted to re-visit this issue.

As I said somewhere, the experience from the squeezebox is very zippy
with 'disable statistics' turned on.

The web gui can be used (at the same time even) and is quite acceptable
in its performance, if not great, however if you've got a Windows PC the
way to go is to use Moose - this means you have very fast desktop
control AND very fast control on the squeezebox.

It's all working so well now I find it pretty much perfect for my
needs, I'm very very impressed.

2005-11-30 Thread bossanova808

Sorry, Dan, are you sayng that is only run if you go into 'information'?
Which information? I find now I no longer get the message about 'your
library contains x tracks by y artists from z albums' but really I
don't care anyway, and that the whole web browsing and squeezbox
experience, on the NAS in any case, is MUCH faster. I did also change
the SQLite thingy to 2 at the same time, so one of those two things
has substantially improved the server performace, at least on the
readyNAS.

I didn't mean to criticise, I was just surprised at how speedy it all
became.

2005-11-30 Thread bossanova808

Sure.

I don't think they've installed anything but I no longer run slimserver
on any pc so I can't check (although I'd love to have the option of
having multiple slimservers, with a ranking, and have the squeezbox
automatically choose the best as and when they are available).

I vaguely remember there was something about it on their forums but I
can't find it now. Really does make a big differnce and anyone with a
readyNAS should give it a whirl.

I'm sure they'd tell you if you asked them - they seem pretty helpful!

[slim] Re: Best NAS Network Attached Storage for SqueezeBox 3?

2005-11-29 Thread bossanova808

I was having a play last night - the difference between having 'Library
Statistics' on and off is enourmous. With it off there is barely any
pause at all, like 0.5 second at any time. I can't imagine anyone
having a problem with it!

Seems like the implementation of library statistics is quite dumb and
invloves significant work for every page. Why they don't jsut store
the data in the db afetr every re-scan and then just read it out for
each page I don't know.

Speeds up both the web browser and squeezebox. To be honest, it is
barely distinguishable from a dedicated server now, even when doing
demanding things like serving album artwork.

[slim] Re: Best NAS Network Attached Storage for SqueezeBox 3?

2005-11-28 Thread bossanova808

I have a similar sized library and am running 6.2.1 on the readyNAS
itself - I don't find it too slow (no RAM upgrade either). There are
certainly pauses when you do certain things but they are generally 2
seconds and I can't say they really bother me.

I guess it depends how you listen to music - I either just random play
songs, or I tend to listen to all music by a particular artist. Works
well enoiugh for me. Oh, I also use the New Music thing a lot and that
also works well.

If I were zipping around looking for lots of different tracks it might
well bother me (but I would jsut do that on a PC or using moose). It
would be easy enough to run slimserver on a connected PC and then I'm
pretyy sure there would be no slowness at all. But I like having the
NAS, means I can listen to music without going down to the office in
the morning and booting a PC, and it uses WAY less power than my PCs as
well.

An ideal situation would be the squeezebox preferentially selecting
from a list of available slimservers so it would choose the PC if that
was running, otherwise go to the NAS slimserver if not.

Hmmm, might start a thread about that.

[slim] Easy Squeezebox option to choose between multiple slimservers?

2005-11-28 Thread bossanova808

Is there a way (eg a plugin) to have the squeezebox automatically choose
between running slimservers?

I.e. I want to run and use a slimserver instance on an actual PC should
that be on, but also another slimserver on a NAS for when the PC isn't
on. The squeezebox would poll say every 30 seconds while idle and you
would be able to rank the slimservers in order of preference. Would
give the best of both worlds - very repsonsive slimserver on a PC if
that happens to be on, but still access to slimserver even if it isn't.
They would both actually look at the same music library stored on the
NAS.

Is there any way to achieve this currently?Would it be useful to
others?

Cheers
JD

[slim] Re: Best NAS Network Attached Storage for SqueezeBox 3?

2005-11-28 Thread bossanova808

See I guess it depends on what you think is unbearable...I find it
thoroughly bearable. Basically, as you right arrow into each section
involving some list being loaded from the server (eg Browse Artists -)
there is a pause of betweeen 0.2 and 2 seconds (at the absolute most).
This I don't find too bad really!

I've used 6.1.1 and 6.2.1 so I don't know about other versions. I have
also told slimserver to use more RAM than the default. I don't know
about other versions.

I think I'm up to about 12000 tracks. I turned OFF the statistics in
the slimserver prefs as this made a BIG difference in resposnsiveness
(both with the NAS and a dedicated PC).

[slim] Re: Easy Squeezebox option to choose between multiple slimservers?

2005-11-28 Thread bossanova808

I think ranking them would be very useful, especially for the common
situation I desrcibed slimserver both on a PC and a NAS, it could
periodically search for the PC to appear again and then auto-reconnect
to the PC once available. That way it has some concept of the 'best'
slimserver to use at any time.

[slim] Transitions/Crossfade

2005-11-24 Thread bossanova808

Since you guys incorporated the code for transitions.pm into the main
servre to do the 'smart replaygain' thing, I was wondering if you could
do the same for crossfade (for which the code was originally designed) -
i.e. a smart crossfade setting that turns on for shuffle and off for
album play. I'd use the plugin but I run slimserver on my ReadyNAS and
therefore can't install plugins at will.

Given the code is there anyway I thought it would be a minor, and
pretty useful, change.

Of course I realise you have a million things to do that may be mroe
important!

Cheers

[slim] Re: SB2 wireless getting bizarre IP address

2005-11-18 Thread bossanova808

I have run into the same issue, but with an SB2. I could only get a
conenction by disabling the turbo mode. This is what D-Link support
staff advised me to do, saying they are havign many instances of the
problem. Since the Sb2 and occasionally a laptop are the only things
that use wireless in my house, this doesn't bother me very much.

Personally, I blame the D-Link router (DI-784 one of the higher end
models) - it is flakey in many ways.

If my cable internet connection goes down, then the D-Link router drops
all its wireless clients (the only clients it has as the others are on a
wired switch). This is even without Turbo-G turned on.

Even with turbo-G on, I never actually experienced a sustained increase
in throughput, even with the laptop and router 1 meter apart.

It is, I think, a pile of poo.

2005-11-18 Thread bossanova808

Try the infrant readyNAS - Ive got slimserver running on it with about
400 gig of music and it works a treat. Slightly slower than a
dedicated server I was running before but way cooler as I can just
leave it running 24 hours a day as it uses less than 100W of power.

[slim] Coming off pause...

2005-11-13 Thread bossanova808

My SB2 exhibits some off behaviour when coming off from being paused.
If I pause and unpause within a few seconds, everything is fine.
However, if I pause then unpause 20 or more seconds later, the music
will resume, play to the end of the track, and not play further tracks
on the playlist.

Slimserver 6.1.1 running on ReadyNAS (have the same problem with slim
6.2 on a dedicated XP server).

Any ideas? Is this expected behaviour? Its one of those niggles that
can get *really* annoying after a while!

[slim] slime.exe ok, but not slimtray

2005-10-27 Thread bossanova808

Hi

Just updated to 6.2 (and did a full re-scan), from a 6.2beta of a
couple weeks ago when replaygain first appeared, and things are working
fine if I double click slim.exe...but not when slim starts up from the
slimtray application.

There is nothing in the event log. All I get is the tray tool saying
'slimserver starting...' but it never goes away and slimserver never
starts.

Any ideas?
