Anyone playing ALAC files with the mov123 executable will experience it.
Similarly, since AAC is played using mov123, it will also experience

needs to be entirely replaced (like was done with the alac executable).

[slim] Re: Apostrophe in song title causes duplicate listing?!

2006-09-13 Thread cepheid

turmon, this may very well be the case. I was going to reply and
disagree with you because I have the exact same setup on my G4 tower
where this duplication is not occurring... but I realized that my setup
there is subtly different in exactly the way you're posting.

Specifically, on the G4 tower, my files are stored on an external hard
disk, /Volumes/LACIE/Music ... however, my home directoy music folder
(/Users/cepheid/Music) is *NOT* aliased to the external drive.
Instead, I have told iTunes (via Preferences) where to store the music,
but I still allow it to store its database and other info in the usual
home directory music folder.

In SlimServer, I have told it to use iTunes and specified that my music
folder is /Users/cepheid/Music, which has NO music files so there can be
no duplicates if indeed SlimServer is behaving the way you surmise.

On my laptop where this duplication bug IS occurring, my music is in
/Users/cepheid/Music and both iTunes and SS are accessing it there, so
it's very possible that this is why the duplication occurs there and
not on the tower.

I have been too lazy to submit this to bugzilla but it looks like
perhaps I should, since this seems like it could affect pretty much
anyone who uses both iTunes and SS on a Mac.

(Incidentally, the reason that my home music folder isn't aliased on
the tower is because SS refuses to start up if the folder specified as
the Music folder in SS is an alias... SS doesn't seem to like aliases.
I have not tried using a symlink rather than an alias, though from your
post I guess that appears to work.)

however, am using the analog output, and therefore I don't see any way
how anything downstream from the SB could cause this clipping so
consistently. I am quite confident the problem resides somewhere in
the SlimServer package, most likely in the mov123 executable. I
realize that mov123 is just a simple wrapper to the Quicktime API but
that is the only consistent software between all of the people who
report this bug. People who have switched to the 'alac' executable
report that it solves the problem (and this is the current official fix
as reported on bugzilla). It's weird that this bug would occur with a
wrapper to the API but not with a native API call (e.g. from iTunes),
but that's the way it appears...

Given that you have 5000 songs repeated, it's unlikely to be the same

[slim] Re: Mac networking question: ethernet and wireless together?

2006-09-13 Thread cepheid

You might try putting the Built-In Ethernet on TOP of the port priority
list, with Airport underneath. OS X allows multihoming but I don't
know how you can tell applications to use a specific port, i.e. I don't
know if there's a way (and if so, how) to tell your web browser to use
the Airport but to tell SlimServer to use the ethernet interface.

There may be a way to do that but instead you can try letting OS X do
the multihoming for you. Make the ethernet port the higher priority
interface. This SHOULD make SlimServer use ethernet instead of
Airport. However, an application trying to connect to the outside
world should default to Airport because there will be no response on
the ethernet interface for WAN-bound packets.

Be aware that this may cause an initial slowdown for your WAN-accessing
applications (e.g. web browser, email client, etc.) the first time they
make a connection, because they will have to wait for a timeout on
ethernet before trying the Airport.

Of course, I could be wrong about all of the above, but it's worth a
shot... see whether it helps. Also, try Googling for OS X multihoming
and see what you find.

[slim] Re: SlimServer on Mac-Waking Up Server

2006-08-02 Thread cepheid

No, I believe the problem is that browser access can't wake the
computer. To wake a sleeping computer, the ethernet port has to
receive a magic packet that wakes it up, a.k.a. the wake-on-LAN
packet. The Squeezebox is configured to send such a packet, hence it
can wake a sleeping computer. Web browsers do not send the magic
packet, however, so if you're trying to access a sleeping computer, it
will not respond.

Essentially, you cannot wake the server via simple browser access.

[slim] Re: Apostrophe in song title causes duplicate listing?!

2006-07-11 Thread cepheid

An update to this:

This bug occurs when an apostrophe is in *any* of the following tags:
song title, artist name, album title. SlimServer shows duplicate
listings for any song that has an apostrophe in any of the above.

The prime example was something like Everybody's Changing by Keane on
the Hopes and Fears album. But, the same duplication happens with ALL
songs by Guns 'n' Roses, for example, regardless of song or album title.
Similarly, all songs on Billie Holiday's Billie's Best album are
duplicated, regardless of song title.

Also note that duplication only occurs once per song, regardless of the
number of apostrophes, i.e. even if there are multiple apostrophes in
the song title (or apostrophes in multiple fields like song title and
album title), the song is still listed exactly twice.

Anyone with more info and/or a fix for this?

I'll probably post this in bugzilla soon.

Doug,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think that's the issue. On the
NON-affected computer, there are plenty of apostrophes in the
folder/file names, and those don't seem to cause the problem. Both of
the machines are running the same versions of both OS X and SlimServer,
so if it were a filename-related issue (i.e. something related to the
file system, totally independent of iTunes and QT), then both machines
would suffer from it. However, only one machine is affected, and
therefore I suspect that it's an incompatibility between SS and iTunes
v4.x rather than a file-system-related issue.

I understand tags *should* be treated OK, but it's quite possible (I
have no idea) that there's some difference between how iTunes v4.x and
v6.x treat tags and/or the .xml library file, and that SlimServer is
having problems when parsing those tags and/or the .xml file from
v4.x.

That's really the only possibility that I can think of that makes
sense, and if that IS the case then hopefully SS can be fixed to become
compatible with both software versions.

Has anyone else seen this issue who uses iTunes v4.x (or any other
version of iTunes)?

[slim] Apostrophe in song title causes duplicate listing?!

2006-07-09 Thread cepheid

Hi all,

So, something weird is going on. My MP3/AAC library (managed in
iTunes) has 1655 songs, but SlimServer is reporting 1878 songs. The
duplicates are *really* duplicated, i.e. the song URL is identical as
shown on the SongInfo page.

I've tried trashing both the slimserverdb.sql *and* the iTunes Music
Library.xml files, and even rebuilding the entire iTunes library from
scratch. Neither one helped.

I've narrowed down the duplicates to songs that have apostrophes in
their titles (e.g. Everybody's Changing or Boys Don't Cry). For
whatever reason, Slimserver is counting and cataloging *ALL* of those
songs TWICE... they are listed twice in the song listings, so they end
up playing twice as well.

The really weird thing is, I'm running the exact same version of SS on
a different computer (with my ALAC library) and this bug does *NOT*
happen there! My preferences are identical though.

On the affected computer, I'm running SS 6.2.2 (build 7135 [release]),
MacOS X 10.3.9, iTunes 4.7.1, QuickTime 6.5. On the NON-affected
computer, I'm running the same SS version, the same OS X version, but
iTunes 6.0.4 and QuickTime 7.0.4.

Could SS have some incompatibility with the older version of iTunes and
not the newer one? Note that iTunes *DOES* report the correct number of
songs in all cases... it's ONLY SlimServer that reports dupes, and
trashing both the iTunes and SS files is of no help. This is a totally
reproducible bug.

I can provide screenshots if needed... but any help would be greatly
appreciated!

No, I do have a hardware Squeezebox. The reason I'd like to use iTunes
is so I can listen to my music when I'm at school. I don't have an iPod
and I can't fit my entire collection on my laptop drive, so it'd be nice
if I could listen to my collection (which is on a 250GB drive at home)
even when I'm not at home.

I guess I should have made that idea more explicit in my original
post.

I keep a shadow library in AAC format so my wife can update her iPod,
hence why I asked whether SlimServer could simply stream those AAC
files rather than transcoding them to MP3.

DrNic Wrote:
Another thought though, can't iTunes share its music library across the

Yes, but only on a local network because iTunes Sharing uses Bonjour
(nee Rendezvous). If I'm not at home then this wouldn't work, unless
someone knows of a way to do iTunes sharing across the internet. There
is software out there that allows two widely-separated LANs to behave as
part of the same LAN, but it is not a transparent solution.

DrNic Wrote:
If using a real Squeezebox the AAC files can be made to stream
uncompressed (WAV) or into FLAC so you don't take the double hit of

Of course. My main library is in Apple Lossless so it's transcoded to
FLAC for use with the hardware Squeezebox. But when I'm away from home
and want to stream to my laptop, I was hoping to stream my shadow AAC
library rather than transcoding the ALAC to mp3.

Just so you know, AIFF and WAV are both uncompressed formats, and
they're both just wrappers for PCM data. The difference is that WAV is
little-endian while AIFF is big-endian, and they use different headers.
The data they contain should be identical however. (And when I say
identical, I mean actual identical bits, just in a different
byte-ordering. ALAC and FLAC are not identical although they should
decompress to identical files, but AIFF and WAV are, essentially, as
close as you can get to being identical without actually being
duplicates.)

If you hear any difference between the formats it would be due to bugs
in the decoders, not differences in any of the file formats. Do know
that there is a bug that affects ALAC files that causes the first few
tenths-of-a-second to be cut off from songs. A similar bug affects
FLAC that causes the last fraction of a second to be skipped.

Also, you should probably DISABLE the AIFF-FLAC and AIFF-MP3 options
(near the top)... it's possible that SlimServer is taking the AIFF
output (from the Apple-AIFF conversion) and then converting it to FLAC
or MP3 because of those checkboxes.

So basically, make sure that AIFF-AIFF and Apple-AIFF are the only
checkboxes enabled in their respective series... does that fix it?

If that DOESN'T fix it then this problem is not limited to FLAC but is
indicative of some other issue... it may be related, though. Slim

AIFF is lossless. It is essentially a wrapper for PCM data IIRC. WAV
is similar except that it uses opposite byte-ordering. Note that AIFF
is an uncompressed format so it will take up approximately twice the
space compared to ALAC. Unless you've got a LOT of disk space I would
not recommend keeping the majority of your files as AIFF.

[slim] Streaming AAC?

2006-05-15 Thread cepheid

Hi all,

I tried searching the forums but came up empty so I thought I'd ask...
is there any way for SlimServer to stream AAC rather than mp3? I'm
specifically talking about streaming to internet clients, i.e. pointing
xmms, iTunes, or some other player to http://SlimServer
URL:9000/stream.mp3 ... that URL is clearly only for mp3. Is there a
similar URL for streaming AAC (stream.m4a perhaps)? I couldn't find
mention of this in the docs either, so I'm thinking that this is not
supported.

If this functionality does not exist, would it be possible to include
it? If my library is encoded as AAC then I would not want to transcode
it to MP3 prior to streaming... since iTunes can handle streaming AAC
just fine, I'd like to be able to point it to my SlimServer and listen
to my AAC files as is.

I understand that SlimServer would not be able to transcode non-AAC
files into AAC, as it currently does for MP3 (since it can convert all
other formats into MP3)... basically what I'm looking for is simply a
way to bypass the MP3 transcoding and just stream the AAC files
directly.

Any thoughts?

chaz,

I have the exact same issue, and reported it
here earlier. *radish* suspects it's due to a
bug in box-side FLAC decoding.

The file-type screen isn't too bad. What you want to do is UNCHECK the
mov - flac option, but leave mov - wav or mov - aiff option
checked. This should hopefully solve your issue, although it will
increase the bandwidth required for streaming, so if your SB is
connected wirelessly then you may notice problems if your signal is
borderline. But give it a shot, let us know how it works out.

[slim] Re: Poll: What is your library size and hardware

2006-05-12 Thread cepheid

Yikes... I thought I had a big library, but most of yours make mine seem
like a shoebox full of old cassettes! Yowzah!

From SlimServer: Your music library contains 476 albums with 5403
songs by 643 artists.

(Various Artists is turned off, and I haven't yet enabled parsing of
the semi-colon separation for multiple artists, so the artist count is
quite off.)

All files in Apple Lossless (ripped from my CDs). Server is a PowerMac
G4 tower (Gigabit Ethernet version from 2000: dual 500MHz CPUs, 720 MB
RAM), music on an external 250GB Lacie F.A. Porsche drive).
6-year-old computer still runs like clockwork and is even acceptably
fast for average usage.

I would *love* to have a library as big as the rest of you... just
don't have the cash to buy all those CDs, even from used-CD stores.
Oh, would that I could...

chaz Wrote:
When you say Mov, are you referring to apple aac, lossless or movie
file in the first column? If so, I don't see a movwav option, but do
have mov aiff and mov mp3.

Sorry, yes. I am referring to Apple AAC, Lossless or Movie File in
the first column. In the second column, you should have AIFF,
FLAC, and MP3. Make sure that the FLAC and MP3 options are
DISABLED, and that the AIFF option is ENABLED. This will ensure that
your Apple Lossless files are streamed uncompressed.

(IIRC the only difference between AIFF and WAV is the byte-ordering and
some small header information, but both should basically be containers
for PCM data. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Well, you may as well, especially given that the task is rather easy to
do. I was sort of planning to post it here myself, once I saw that it
was so straightforward.

In any case, I haven't heard back from the OP yet anyway (he's probably
asleep since he's in the UK), so given that this is no gargantuan task,
post away.

I'm a starving graduate student but obviously not in danger of
immediate death, so it's no big deal. =) I appreciate the thought,
though!

[slim] Re: First sec of song getting clipped off

2006-05-07 Thread cepheid

As reported in this thread, I'm fairly certain
it's the beginning of tracks. Yes, it occurs only with FLAC... in my
case, it's when ALAC is transcoded to FLAC before streaming to the SB.

It's rather annoying and also screws up gapless playback... hopefully
it will be fixed soon.

Yeah, in my case it's the opposite - if I play the track from stopped,
the beginning is missing.

However, I'll add a comment and vote for the report. =) Hopefully we
can get it fixed. It's a minor annoyance but an annoyance nonetheless.

[slim] Re: Decoder for .m4a's besides Quicktime?

2006-04-13 Thread cepheid

jtbse Wrote:
 For example, a track named

08 - Stevie Ray Vaughn Double Trouble - Chitlins Con Carne.m4a

can't be opened by mov123 (Error -37 in Quicktime), and just gets an
end of file error in SlimServer when trying to play it. But the same
 track renamed to

 08 - Stevie Ray Vaughn - Chitlins Con Carne.m4a

Has no problems. Think this is because of a filename charcter
limitation with mov123 that I've seen reference to in other forums on
the Internet. (The file with the original name plays fine in Winamp,
 BTW).
Question for you:

If you change the ampersand () to the word and (i.e. name the track
08 - Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble - Chitlins Con Carne.m4a)
does it still fail, or does it work?

If it fails, then yes, it's a filename-length limitation. If it works,
the problem is likely a bug in mov123, namely that it may not be
properly escaping special characters like ampersand.

Let us know...

Which D-Link router? I'm using a DI-624 with WPA-PSK without any
problems whatsoever. As long as SuperG and Turbo are disabled, the SB3
can connect just fine with WPA, at least in my case.
