First of all, that is exactly where they told me to park.

Secondly, my car is NOT QUITE AS GAY as riding a pony around town.

Lastly, no, we never sent out those stickers. They are a vinyl cutout
and a bit of work to stick on, but we could have a bunch made if
 people
 are interested. Pic:

that after you upgraded SS to 6.5.1, your SB3 asked you to upgrade its
firmware as well (by pressing the Brightness button)? If this step was
bypassed, it may caused this. Read page 23 of User Guide for some basic
reset and firmware update for your unit.

while to eliminate that. This seems a better test to me than playing
 your CD player over it.

A music library in WAV format and you always defrag your hard drives?
You sound like someone prone to superstition ;)

Old habits die hard since the Intel486 era, disc defrag greatly improve
performance ;^)
It's true the music library drive does not need defrag as frequently as
system disc, maybe once a month but this will check drive integrity as
well so it's good PM (sound files are solid but playlist files get
rewritten daily by Slimserver)
I wanted to make sure datastream not being interrupted due to excessive
disc activity since this noise is similar to a skipping CD, I will also
try to pay attention to the signal locked light on the DAC (I used the
optical connection) for unusual behavior if indeed it's the case.
Thanks for the advice.

[slim] Random popping sounds appeared...

2007-01-01 Thread empty99

After a year of listening bliss, the last 2 weeks my SB3 started to hang
while playing net radios (Smoothlounge.com), requiring reboot by
unplugging the power cord (the power button hold-down could not reset
it as you normally do). On top of all this, every once in a while,
listening to my music library (WAV format) a loud pop (very sharp
potential tweeter killers) would appear and as I rewind/replay it did
not re-occur, this tell me it's electrical spike, not embedded on
datastream and obviously on songs that previously played just fine.
Am fairly well-versed in PC stuffs, always defrag my drives, using
wired SB3 w/ 100mb/s ethernet and Netgear WGT624v3 router which also
offer wireless. I did not do any config changes to either my PC or
Slimserver when these problems appeared. The outboard DA converter
tested fine using my CD player, so the problem appeared to originate
from the PC/Network/SB3 routes.
Any help or potential clue much appreciated.

New update 2300hrs 05/05/06: System freezes twice today w/ Slimversion
6.2.1 so all bets are off. I did remember downloading Octoshape plugin
to play 192k streaming radios a few nights prior to V6.2.2 upgrade. So
here it is: Slimserver Version 6.2.2 is NOT the cause of PC freezes on
MY system, I have uninstalled Octoshape plugin and currently playing
music for 20 hrs w/o problem.

2006-05-04 Thread empty99

After 7 months of uninterrupted musical bliss w/ v6.2.1, per Slim
website I upgraded to V6.2.2 and my PC started to freeze randomly,
usually within a couple of songs. Needless to say, I had to go through
the pains of uninstall/reinstall and hundreds of little setpoints redo
to make my PC work again with V6.2.1, please be forewarned, TN

2006-05-04 Thread empty99

Freezes occur immediately post install, requiring hard reboots, quite
rare in my system (maybe 5 times last 4 yrs, but 3 times in just half
hour last night). I looked at event logs, nothing shown. The last
freeze occurred even while I listened to internet radio, with
Slimserver just idling. The setpoints I mentioned were all those little
checkboxes to customize my SB3 behavior and such, but no playlists were
lost, thank goodness. Wanted to share my experience, but realize
countless possibilities in a typical PC hardwares/softwares soup, it
could be anything. TN

Itunes for non geeks SB users and Slimservers for others who like to
tinker. There is no need to argue, I am neither Apple fan nor PC lover.
Oh, I also don't have time to play with all the compression formats

eating food with too much MSG, slight headache and stiff neck after
long listening sessions.

2006-01-19 Thread empty99

I am an ex Roku (M1001) user, bought it during Xmas and spent the next
month trying to get rid of background noises and low fi quality, then
read that the dang thing transcodes everything to 48KHz sampling, no
wonder the lousy sound! I finally had to return it and bought the SB3
and WHOA! WHAT SWEET MUSICS OVER DEAD QUIET BACKGROUNG!!! It sounds
even better than my Sony ES CD player. But, here is the BIG BUT...I
fell in love with Itunes music server and how EZ it is to arrange,

painfully and excruciatingly trying to do the same in Slimserver, with
every mouse clicks result in webpage refresh, no way to sort,
alphabetize, group songs according to Artist/Composer/Genre since I am
strictly a WAV. file users w/ no Metadata supports. Let me first say
that I admire all those who put in their times in creating the
Slimserver to power the SB box and all its variances (I loved those RSS
news, environmental sounds with extremely high fidelity effects, i.e:
The Rural sounds with distant barking dogs, a good half mile away you
can clearly tell!!!), the commitment to leaving the digital bits
perfect for audiophiles like me, but the people who created Itunes have
totally and completely shame you all back to the drawing boards when it
comes to managing music libraries! I challenge you to match Itunes
usability for the superb Squeezebox V3, it sure is a killer device
needing a killer app. Thank you and good night. Tuong Nguyen
