thanks to everyone for their input. Here are some things to note: the SB is hard wired to my network (my device does not seem to have wireless capability, anyway) and its output is going directly to a Sonos connect device so it can be played throughout my Sonos grid. That's why i can't test it without the Sonos system. I have nine Sonos connectors in my house, each powering a set of speakers in a different location. LMS is running on a Surface Book with running 64bit Windows 10 with an i7 2.6GH processor and 16 GB of memory with a 1TB hard drive. It's a pretty rockin' machine as far as laptops go. And it's a much faster processor with more memory than the last PC i had LMS running on. My SB has never worked right since i moved in here. that's part of the reason the guys were here today. I think it's a networking issue, but they say it's not because they used Sonos to play music over WiFi from my PC where my music is stored with no problem. So they contend it is the SB that can't "keep up." 2. [slim] Does a Squeezbox degrade over time?
i recently moved into a new house with a new network and a full blown Sonos system (nine rooms). It's all great, BUT my Squeezebox is not working properly. When playing music from my PC it "struggles" -- songs fade out and "stumble" (this is hard to describe). I had some network experts here today that say it's my Squeezebox -- they say it is making buffering requests (or something like that) and it can't "keep up." I find this hard to believe because it worked great two months ago in my old house. Have you heard of a SB that degrades over time and becomes unusable? Is there anything i can do to get it working properly? i appreciate your help. I shut down the computer with LMS, turned off the router and modem, restarted modem, restated router, rebooted computer. In the web interface I went to the app gallery, selected the Pandora app, hit configure and logged in. It apparently was successful, but i still can't see it in the web control interface (same for Sirius XM). I can see and use the Spotify plugin. [slim] Pandora app no longer showing on my home screen
I just discovered the Pandora app isn't showing on my home screen (so i can't use the service). Here's what i've done to try and fix it (but with no luck): 1. Verified the plugin is installed and enabled 2. Went the app gallery and confirmed the configuration of the app 3. uninstalled the app, reinstalled it, reconfigured it. i refreshed my display after each step. [slim] iTunes playlists won't scan anymore
Help! i'm having a party tonight and my LMS won't scan my itunes playlists. I stumbled across this, so i did some tests: -- i added some new songs, hit clear library and rescan everything and they DO appear in the library list of songs (that's good) -- i changed some existing playlists, hit clear library and rescan everything and the playlists are still in the library but the song changes do NOT appear (that's bad) -- i add two new playlists (one dynamic and one static), hit clear library and rescan everything, and the playlists do NOT appear in the library (that's bad) this was all working fine until today. something curious i've noticed is that even when the scanner is finished on the general tab it says scanning...view progress. Fixed it! for some reason i discovered two iTunes iTunes Database XML files, one named iTunes Library that whose last changed date was weeks ago, and one named iTunes Music Library whose last changed date was today. I pointed LMS at the latter and it all works. I just signed up for Spotify Premium. Installed the third party plug in, configured it, and it looked like all was good. Selected an album, added to playlist, clicked play. Progress bar started moving and after a few seconds it stopped. [slim] Playlist limit of 500?

thanks. It won't be long before they rename LMS to something else, I suppose. I've had a Squeezebox for years and the server software seems to be the most renamed software I know of. I'm using 7.6.1 and I gather it is trying to update itself to 7.7 but failing. Any idea why? I'm running Squeezebox Server on 64bit Windows 7. The icon in the system tray keeps telling me there is an upgrade. When I click on the icon and choose 'install update it goes away but later returns to tell me there is an update. What gives? [slim] Pandora with Default interface
I know this is a simple question and I'm sorry for clogging the forum with one, but I can't figure it out. I just switched to the Default interface from Fishbone (my favorite!) because the latest upgrade no longer supports Fishbone. :) I can't figure out how to play Pandora from my Squeezebox anymore. Under My apps it says App Gallery, and if I click on that I get a separate interface (something I find confusing) and Pandora appears in there, under my apps, but I can't figure out how to get to my stations and play them. [slim] Empty playlists?
i'm running SS 7.52 using iTunes 10.1.1.4 on Windows 7. i have my rescan timer set to rescan once a day, at 5am. Frequently, when i try to play a playlist first thing in the morning, SS says it is empty (BTW, most of my playlists are dynamic lists in iTunes). Sometimes i can resolve this just by clicking on a different playlist to see its contents; if SS shows me the contents of the list, then all my lists will work fine after that for the rest of the day. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get the contents of a list displayed. Other times i try this on multiple lists and it just says that each list is empty. I can always resolve this by forcing a manual rescan (either clear and rescan everything or only rescan playlists.) What is causing this? it did it on my old computer for years, and i had hoped that when i upgraded to my honkin' big new Dell i7 on Windows 7 that it would go away, but it hasn't. [slim] Empty play lists -- scan issues?
I'm using SqueezeCenter 7.3 on XP with iTunes. I have my rescan set to run once/day at night. In the mornings when i try to play a playlist, SC often tells me the playlist is empty (but its not in iTunes). If i manually force a rescan, everything is ok. the odd thing is that the problem doesn't happen all the time, and i can't find any pattern to why it happens when it does. i've searched the forums for related issues and can't find much. i did find something awhile ago about Macafee, and i changed my registry settings as instructed, which fixed another problem but this problem still occurs sporadically. lately by Squeezebox seems to have trouble connecting to SqueezeCenter. It often displays the message connecting and doesn't seem to be doing anything. it also pauses between songs during playback. I can't figure out why and i can't find anything in the forum to help. running SC on a Dell Dimension with XP, all service packs and updates. [slim] Slow loading of right pane (playlist contents)
Is anyone having trouble getting the right pane in SC (the one that shows the current playlist contents and the volume controls, etc). to display? The tab in Firefox says loading... and the contents of the playlist takes FOREVER to display and sometimes it never does. I have the same problem with IE. The left pane (that shows all the playlists) is fine. One of the things i like about Fishbone is the ability to subtract a playlist's contents from the current playlist. So, i can add a playlist to the current playlist and then choose another one and say remove any of these songs from the current playlist. [slim] Empty playlists with iTunes
Got a weird problem: i'm using SS 6.5.1 with iTunes 7.4.2.4. I have SS rescan my music every night. Most of the time everything is cool, but sometimes (like today) it lists all of my iTunes playlists but it says they are empty. Here's the really weird part: this morning the playlists had songs in them (i played some), and this evening it says the playlists are empty. And i never used SS in the interim. So, I told SS to rescan my libray with only rescan playlists, and it still said they were empty. Tried that twice. Often the bottom right pane of the main fishbone interface doesn't display or refresh. This is the area of the interface that shows the songs that have just played or are about to play. Using SS 6.5.1. [slim] Slimserver 6.5.1 keeps stopping
I'm running SS on a Windows XP machine with all the service packs and upgrades with 1Gb RAM. I use the iTunesUpdate plugin to write to the iTunes database everytime i play a song. This set up has worked frequenlty and flawlessly for a long time. Lately, slimserver stops for no apparent reason. Rigth in the middle of a song it stops playing, and if i go to the icon in the system tray i can pick start slimserver and it will restart and i can resume playing. then eventually it will stop. An earlier posting regarding slimserver stoppage suggested to check the Windows event viewer. thanks, Mark. I can't find anywhere in my virus scanner (McAfee) to ignore files of a certain type. I can ignore/trust programs, but i don't see anywere to indicate file types. what do you think is causing the problem? BTW, i just upgraded the lastest 6.5.1 build (i noticed i was using a pre-release 6.5.1 build) and it's been playing for a few hours without issues, so maybe i'm ok. Hmmm...the interesting thing is that my virus scanner was definitely not scanning when this happened, unless some form of real time protection somehow was stopping it. After some experimentation, I am confused and a bit skeptical of what i've read. My goal is to modify my MP3 files to play at a consistent volume in my Squeezebox as well as my iPod without using ReplayGain. I want to know how to operate the MP3Gain GUI to do that. one of the postings says that by hitting the track analysis button in MP3Gain it will modify the volume bits but not write ReplayGain tags. to write those tags, the posting says, you need to hit the TrackGain button. however, after experimentation, i find that hitting Track Analysis does nothing except report the difference between the file's current volume and the target volume. the only way to implement the change is to hit the ReplayGain button -- which alters the volume in Squeezebox playback EVEN WITHOUT USING SQUEEZEBOX'S VOLUME ADJUSTMENT (TRACK GAIN). Wouldn't writing RG tags to the files with Track Analyis cause the file to be modified? Your explanation makes a lot of sense. it sounds like: for MP3 files, adjusting the Gain directly is ok (certainly no worse than using MP3s in the first place) and will work for any device that plays MP3 (that's good). for lossless formats (FLAC, etc) ReplayGain values are the way to go becasue they don't alter the musical part of the files. I've been using MP3Gain to normalize my MPE file sound volume, but I've noticed some weird things happening with MP3Gain and iTunes with SS and wondered if someone could guide me. I've read tons of postings here about ReplayGain, etc. but can't find the answer to this one. Here's a sample workflow to illustrate the issue: 1. rip CD using iTunes to MP3. 2. Examine file using MP3Tag. FIilecontains many tag values, all in ID3V2.2. It also contains an ITunNorm tag, which i wish it did not have, because i prefer ReplayGain tags, but that's another issue. 3. use MP3Gain to compute and create ReplayGain values. 4. Examine file using MPETag. It now says the current tag is APEv2 (i think MP3Gain writes APEv2 tags) and also indicates the file contains ID3v2.2 tags. I have used MP3Tag to strip the iTunNorm tag in the past, but after running MP3Gain over the file the iTunNorm tag doesn't show in MP3Tag. I doubt MP3Gain removes it. But if i can't see it in MP3Tag i can't remove it! Argh. Not sure of the right way to get this to the SS team, but i hope this works. we REALLY need a switch in SS that lets the user pick what type of volume adjustment tag SS/SB should use on replay. iTunes applies iTunNorm tags without soundcheck even being turned on, so if you want to use something smarter (like MP3Gain or Foobar2000 for ReplayGain tags) you have to first remove the iTunNorm tags and THEN apply the ReplayGain tag. What a nuisance! Can anyone explain this? I have a sample MP3 file where SlimServer shows a volume adjustment value of -13.50 (i think it came from an iTunNorm tag). Check this out: 1. use MP3Tag to delete the iTunNorm tag. There were no ReplayGain values in the files. 2. In Slimserver, clear library, rescan 3. Slimserver shows no volume adjustment (this makes sense) 4. In MP3Gain, load the track. Run track analysis. it shows a track adjustment value of -4.5 5. Go to MP3Tag for the same file. It shows a ReplayGain value of -9.26! 6. Go to Slimserver: clear library, rescan 7. Slimserver shows a volume adjusment value of -9.26 (this matches what MP3Tag shows, but is different than what MP3Gain shows, wich generated the value) 8. In Foobar2000, advanced edit: shows ReplayGain value of -4.745 (this matches what MP3Gain showed during Track Analysis but is different from MP3Tag and Slimserver) 9. MP3Gain: Undo, remove tags from files 10. MP3Tag: no replay gain value (makes sense) 11. Foobar2000: no replay gain value (makes sense) 12. Foobar2000: scan per-file track gain. shows value of -9.27 13. MP3Tag: shows replaygain value of -9.27 14. MP3Gain: Track analysis shows value of -4.5 (huh?) 15. MP3Tag: shows ReplayGain value of -4.5 16. FooBar2000 advanced edit: shows value of -9.27 17 SlimServer. Clear library, rescan. 18. [slim] how to download 6.5.1?
I want to install slimserver 6.5.1 (apparently it behaves better with iTunesUpate than prior versions) but i can't figure out how to do it. when i follow the URL on the Downloads part of the website it takes me to a set of links. They're all labeled 6.5.0 except for one which is labeled 6.5.1 but it's a DEB file (what's that?) Not sure if this is relevant, but i'll offer it up anyway. I've been using MP3Gain with slimserver and an SB3 for quite a while and LOVING how it keeps the songs at relatively the same volume. However, i recently upgraded to slimserver 6.5 and now i'm getting weird, huge volume adjusment values. Can't tell where they're coming from and it's really a bummer. -- MP3Gain doesn't show such large values -- i had sound check turned on in iTunes (altho i don't like the sonic quality of sound check) but i turned it off. I even fiddled with the volume adjustment slider in iTunes but it makes no difference to slimserver. I'm having similar issues with the Fishbone interface in 6.5. when i click on the song's name in the now playing list, i get songinfo and (usually) the album art. however, in the thumbnail next to the song, album, and artist name in the now playing area (top right hand part of browser) i get a blank thumbnail with a question mark. Thanks tons for your message -- i'm thrilled by what i've read for the iTunes Update plug in. It sounds perfect. i'm trying to get it working in direct update mode, but it says I can't run SS as a service. I know how to turn the service off in Windows, but how do i run SS not as a service? I believe if i choose start SS from the SS tray application or from the Programs list in the Start menu it will start it as a service. Is that right? I also tried running Slim application in program files\slimserver\server. it brings up a DOS window and displays some messages, but it doesn't appear that SS is running (my browser can't connect to it). Would be very cool if Slimserver could write back to the iTunes database everytime it played a song so that Slimsever could use the last played feature in iTunes playlists. Here's the scenario: you have lots of songs in a playlist, where the order is unimportant (shuffle by song). You'd like to build a playlist in iTunes that says something like: Select IF conditionX ** selects songs for the list AND LAST PLAYED IS NOT IN THE LAST Y days This would dynamically select songs for a playlist based on conditionX but would also limit the list to just those songs that were only played more than Y days ago. [slim] Sound drop-outs, performance issues with 6.2
When my Slimserver runs, it often times stops producing any audio and/or emits odd sounds while a song is playing (sounds like water droplets). When the audio stops, the progress bar in the web interface continues to move, and when the audio resumes, the song has progressed past the point where the audio stopped. So it appears that Slimserver is still processing the song, but it stops producing any output. I also notice that at times the slimserver process is consuming as much as 99% of the CPU! I'm running a pretty recent build of Slimserver (v2005-11-06)on a Dell Dimension with a Squeezebox1 and iTunes. I've been using this set up for a few years. A similar problem happened about a year ago, but by upgrading to a new version of SlimServer it went away. It seems that when i moved to this version of Slimserver a similar but different problem has emerged. I've got my iTunes reload interval set to 1200 so it should not be chasing song if I change them in iTunes while its playing. Does anyone know how to generate volume adjustments for files in iTunes? I understand that MP3Gain will calcualte ReplayGain tags for many files at once and the SS 6.2 (with an SB gen 2 or 3) will make use of these tags. If your files are in iTunes, SS and SB will make use of these tags, but iTunes (and iPods) won't because, as I understand it, iTunes uses a different tag for volume adjustments. However, i believe that the iTunes volume adjustments will also be recognized by SS 6.2/SB 2. So, if there's a way to generate the iTunes tags en mass, they will be used by both iTunes and SS/SB. Is there a program that will calcualte the adjustments and do it to many files at once? I've been using the Fishbone interface for quite a while and was surprised to see that in the web interface in SS 6.2 it appears that the messages that used to display when you pause your mouse over the controls are gone. I'm no expert, but I think if you click on the information link/button in the playlist (the list of songs that are playing or about to play) you will get some information telling you what the ReplayGain value is. I just installed 6.2 and was thrilled with the notice that it contains automatic volume adjustments -- something I've been requesting for almost the nearly two years that I've had (and loved!) my SqueezeBox. But how does it work? I don't see any difference when it plays on my song collection. I'm using iTunes with MP3 files. Do I have to use the iTunes volume adjustment? i tried that but it doesn't seem to do anything. I displayed the information via the Fishbone interface and there's a voluume adjustment attribute, but it doesn't seem to have any affect. i read elsewhere in the forum about ReplayGain -- do i need to create these for every song and how do I do it? Or is this created by the volume adjustment control in iTunes? I read something about MP3Gain -- is that a program that automatically creates the volume adjustment tags?
