Re: [slim] DS106 and mplayer
There is no SSODS version 6.3.1. You probably mean Slimserver 6.3.1. SSODS = 2.5 (or so), however, comes with mplayer. For certain reasons, it is not called mplayer but mplayer-stdout. Hence, you need to adjust the conversion rules accordingly (in custom-convert.conf for 6.5.x and in some other file which name I don't remember for 6.3.x). How to enable mplayer(-stdout) for AlienBBC is documented in the README. The procedure for other file formats (m4a in your case) should work in a similar way. I think people have already done this. Of course, the command is *sqlite3* and it is even included with SSODS. /volume1/SSODS/bin/sqlite3 /volume1/SSODS/var/cache/.slimserversql.db should open a console to the databse (i may be wrong with the path to the database file above, i don't remember it..). You can also transfer the database file to another computer and use it there. There are even ODBC and JDBC drivers for Sqlite! And there exist some GUI tools, at least for windows. See sqlite.org. flip Edit: This single file _is_ the whole database. So just backup this file. [slim] Re: Report on powerline ethernet (five weeks later)
Thanks for the report, Omri. I can confirm your findings. I'm using three hispeed home plug adapters (2 x devolo, 1 x netgear w/switch) with complete satisfaction. I can add the following. Usually speed to one adapter (or: one room in my flat) is far below 85 mbps. It goes down in steps to 11 mbps. Usually it is around 45 mbps. The same happens independently from the adapter used (i tried both there). I reckon it happens because there is a cascade of socket multipliers (is that the word?) and lots of devices plugged in. I think that devolo addresses this in their FAQ where they say that other devices and socket multipliers might interfere with the adapter. The conclusion is that a connection via two adapters might not be adequate to copy large amounts of data over it. But even 11 mbps will be enough to drive a Squeezebox. E.g. when I ripped a new CD it will take some time to copy the flacs to my SlimServer server (see my signature). flip -- flipflip Check out flipflip's 'SlimServer On DiskStation (SSODS)' (http://oinkzwurgl.org/software/ssods/)! flipflip's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5223 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27990 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?
Yes, that is correct. Please consider that the 101j and the 106e have 32 MB of RAM where other models (101, 106) have 64 MB. More memory greatly increases the speed of the Squeezebox and the Slimserver. It does not affect playing or any functionality, but searching, browsing and especially the web interface will work much smoother (faster, quicker) on a 64 MB model. The 101 has also an IDE interface but is not sold anymore. It's even rather rarely sold on ebay et al. I would not recommend a 101j or a 101e from that point of view. The other models have SATA disk interfaces. You could put your harddisk into an usb enclosure and use that as a backup media (attached directly to the DS). Silence depends on the harddisk and where the box is. The 101 and the 101j do not have a ventilator and should therefore probably not be put into a cupboard (heat, convection). Then again, different harddisks produce more or less heat (as far as I know, the more GB, the hotter). The other DS models have a small ventilator. All DS models are rather silent, but you probably want to put it somewhere where noise does not matter (hallway, office, ..). Ethernet over powerline (devolo, netgear and other products) are a good way to connect the DS and the SB without additional cabling. A CS-406 (also Synology) is worth a look as well. It has a faster CPU (400 MHz, others: 266 MHz) and even more RAM (128 MB). The new CS-406e is 266 MHz and 64 MB. [slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?
Bloody Synology. How many different versions are they selling?! I didn't know about the 406e until this morning and about the 106j until right now! The Swiss importer (www.brack.ch) is usually rather precise about the specs (they test it, they do not just copypaste). They say it's a 32 MB with a 200 MHz CPU. As I understand, j is junior, i.e. IDE (and no eSATA) and 32 MB. e is light, i.e. 32MB (and a few software features disabled). If performance is an issue and you have that many mp3s (bigger database to scan), I would recommend a 64 MB Diskstation, that is a DS-106. You could get a cheap small SATA disk and use your disk in an external USB enclosure. SS(ODS) could play the external files as well and the database would be on the internal disk. -- flipflip Check out flipflip's 'SlimServer On DiskStation (SSODS)' (http://oinkzwurgl.org/software/ssods/)! flipflip's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5223 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24626 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Powerline ethernet: Macintosh? Which brand of adapter?
Hello I have two Devolo (dLAN Highspeed Ethernet) and one Netgear (wall plugged ethernet switch xe104). Both are homeplug devices and operate well together. I do not have a mac (never! ;-) but once the adapters are set up, no software is required to run them. You could setup everything somewhere else and then use the plugs at home. I reckon one _must_ setup the plugs to build a group (you could have several groups on the same power line). Btw, here, the Netgear plug costs less than a devolo plug! I like the netgear much more because it has a built in ethernet switch (4 ports) and gets much less warm than the devolo (which gets rather hot). The network operates at up to 85 mbit. I do not know if that is the usable bandwidth or if parts of it is used for the protocol. Two Squeezeboxes and the Slimserver are connected over these power line adapters. No problem at all, just as if they were on the same switch. Check the devolo homepage, they have a FAQ. Okay, I agree. I think that a single httpd process can handle one connection and does not use a lot of ram. To serve static pages one probably needs very little ram. The main part of the process' ram is probably used by PHP et al. So, maybe 32 mb is enough for 10 (or so) connections, then 64 mb would be sufficient for 20 connections. Although if your PHP scripts use a lot of ram (i.e. to store lots of data in ram) the numbers will be different. Also, too much ram is not unused. It is used as cache and buffers (input/output, program execution, etc.). To conclude, I would go for a DS-106 or a DS-101g+. And if noise is an issue, then a DS-101. And if money does not matter, I would get a CS-406. :-) I still do not know if an arm or a ppc processor at the same MHz speed is more performant. The disk interface (SATA vs. IDE/ATA) probably has an influence on the performance as well. Especially if you use a database or read large junks of data from the disk in some way (swapping, searching data). flipflip -- flipflip Check out flipflip's 'SlimServer On DiskStation (SSODS)' (http://oinkzwurgl.org/software/ssods/)! flipflip's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5223 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24626 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?
I reckon that the flash size has no influence on the performance. As far as I know, it is used to store the boot loader, the kernel and an initrd image. These will be loaded on boot and are not used for operation. But I may be wrong about that. Btw, there is a beta release firmware for the DS-101 (version 366) which does not use up memory for a ram disk anymore. So the full 64 MB are available for programs. SS therefore runs rather well compared to a DS-101j. The PPC models may still be faster, though. At least the 64MB variants. flipflip -- flipflip Check out flipflip's 'SlimServer On DiskStation (SSODS)' (http://oinkzwurgl.org/software/ssods/)! flipflip's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5223 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24626 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I have never tried anything else but 6.2.1 and 6.2.2. Perhaps there are some Perl modules missing. Check the logfile and possibly enable telnet and start SlimServer manually. That might output an error or so. The command to start Slimserver is: /volume1/SlimServer/bin/rc.slimserver start (or stop to stop and status to show the status). Can you please give us your opinion on the speed of the SlimServer web interface. Is it running smoothly? [slim] Re: Which Disk Station is best for running slimserver (SSODS)?
I'd appreciate it someone had some info on the 106 hardware. I've sent a request to synology about this, let's hope they reply. ... Btw, The README.txt of SSODS does not cover the 106, only the 101j, 101g+, 106e and the CS-406. I have been told that the two are pretty much the same -- whatever that means. A German internet shop has both versions in stock: 'DS-106' (http://www.informationsarchiv.net/shop/shop-artikel_101531.shtml) (260 #8364;)and 'DS-106e' (http://www.informationsarchiv.net/shop/shop-artikel_101527.shtml) (230 #8364;) According to these pages, the 106 is black (like 101g+), and the 106e is white (like the 101j). Both have an MPC8241 CPU and 32 MB of RAM. The difference I found is that the 106 has Windows ADS/ NT4 Domain and Secure FTP by SSL/TLS. Maybe the 106 has an improved software configuration (Linux kernel) or a faster disk interface. And maybe the DS-106 is 'something completely different' (http://webdb.scope.ne.jp/real_fleet/amadana/ds_106/).. ;-) I updated the README.ssods. Well, at least the DS is still running. ;- What firmware revision do you have? What DS do you have exactly. You say 101g. Does that exists? Do n't you mean 101g+? I have one confirmation from a g+ user by mail. Although from an earlier (not published) version. And he had his machine already patched before (Optware). Maybe there is some library incompatibility.. Although I do not understand why. Did you patch the machine before (NSLU2/OpenSlug/Optware or the like)? We can do two things. 1. Check if SS would still run. That can be done by telnet (command: /volume1/SlimServer/bin/rc.slimserver start). If it runs, we're fine, then it's only the admin interface which does not work. 2. See why the admin interface produces an error. I'll look at that. The URL you posted is okay. The id will be checked against the file current.users which contains a list of currently logged in users. If that fails, you get a clear message indication so and not a webserver error. -- flipflip flipflip's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5223 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23066 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Oh, sorry, my concentration has gone down a bit.. I need some fuel (i.e. lunch) soon :-) If you install with a new harddisk then you have an unpatched system. There's not much to patch in the flash memory. And if there was something wrong the DS would probably have other problems. I'll have a llok at the firmware. I cannot see it running, but i have the files. Maybe there is a slight difference to mine (since it is a bit older; revision 281, i have 284 on the j). rhubarbe, i am sorry to tell you this: A collegue has just tested it on a new (i.e. installed from scratch, with an empty hdd) DS-101g+, firmware 284. And it worked as expected and described! I suggest, that you start from scratch as well. Empty the HDD: delete all partitions. you probalby need to connect the HDD to another computer (internal or in an external usb-enclosure) and delete the partitions. This can be done in windows using the Disk Tool (I don't know the exact English name) under Administrative Tools (or so). Then reinstall the DS with the firmware 284 and try again. I hope it will work. Virtually nothing. Not working would mean, that you cannot start the slimserver process because of binary incompatibility. But that shall not happen. There is an included deinstallation-patch which will completely remove all of SSODS even if the installation has partly failed. And in the very worst case you can still format the whole harddisk and setup the DS from scratch. I cannot think of any way why the installation of the patch would interfere with the DS functionality. -- flipflip flipflip's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5223 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23066 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
