Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2013-05-07 Thread mkanet

Hi Pippin, thank you for all your effort in ickStream. My home is all
SageTV Media Center based. I have a tiny extender box connected to a TV
and speakers in each room (no other devices needed). My extenders can
handle full digital cableTV DVR functionality, Bluray discs or ISOs,
MKVs, etc).

All my extender also have SB client support (based on Softsqueeze.jar).
I'm guessing as long as Squeezebox Classic is supported, all my
Softsqueeze based players will also continue to work just fine. I'm
willing to donate generously for the ickStream project. Good luck; and,
hope to hear some good news soon!

pippin wrote:
I would want to add a bit of perspective regarding the device support.

The question about which devices to start with is really not one about
which devices we want to favor or something like that. Myself, I
regularly use 6 Squeezeboxes (plus a number of iThingies with iPeng as a
player, but all but one of those are mainly really being used as mobile
players and the one exception sitting in a dock currently is my
ickStream player :) And plus some test devices, e.g. a Radio converted
to UE). Of these 6 devices one is a Radio one is a Touch and all others
 are ip3k devices (2x Classic, 1x Boom, 1x Transporter),

So for my actual listening, I will need a solution for these old devices
as much as anybody else here and I really hope it will be there. And
 soon.

However, ickStream is not just a plugin for LMS to replace MySB, it's a
whole different system and while it comes with moderate effort to
support LMS as a music source and while the Squeezeplay based players
are easy to adapt because they use a powerful and open platform, that's
not true of the ip3k devices. Putting a software on them is not an
option, we don't even have a software toolkit for that (and it would be
prohibitively expensive) plus the memory on these devices is so tight
that adding ickStream inevitably would mean removing some of the
 Squeezebox related functionality.

So the only way to get these devices supported is by running them as
Squeezebox devices and making LMS the ickStream Player. This is not
impossible, the UPnP plugin in LMS actually does something very similar,
but it's a bit against our architecture which is why it's simply not the
 thing to start with.

One of our basic ideas is to have more independent devices and this
simply fits the new Squeezeboxes better, so they come first.

I am pretty convinced we will have a solution for ip3k devices, too.
Actually I rely on it. But we don't have infinite time and resources so
we have to start with _something_ and there the old players simply are
not step 1 on the to-do-list.

Re: [slim] Pre-Announcement: ickStream Music Platform

2013-05-02 Thread mkanet

I'm curious if the intention for ickStream would be to allow my current
squeezebox devices to continue to work; such as all my Squeezebox
Classic players. Would my clients continue to work the same way?

My family mainly uses SB for SiriusXM and Pandora. It would be great if
the transition to ickStream would be invisible to my SB
clients/players.

Would I simply replace Logitech Media Server with ickStream media server
software on my Windows PC?

Thanks so much!

[slim] Recorder Plugin that can schedule recordings?

2013-04-29 Thread mkanet

Im pretty sure I'm not the first person wanting to schedule radio show
recordings. However, when searching for something like this, I was a
bit surprised not to find any popular plugins. I just found one
unfinished plugin. Is there a better way to do this that people are
using? All I need is podcast-style audio dumps of my morning radio show
on SiriusXM (Howard Stern).

Re: [slim] Now the Squeezebox is dead, what would your next system be? And why?

2013-01-04 Thread mkanet

I currently use a customized version of Softsqueeze; which integrates
perfectly in my SageTV Media Center software. So, I basically have
universal radio, digital cable TV DVR, bluray which are all integrated
into one Server-client system. So, instead of having 4-5 different
set-top-boxes sitting in each room, I just have a tiny extender box to
take their place in each room.

I'm curious if there are any new server-extender based Media Center
technologies which can integrate (universal radio and music playback
-squeezebox-replacement-), cableTV (including premium TV channels),
bluray movies (ripped or from BD disc itself on the server), etc. I'm
just trying to avoid having a big mess of unlike devices sitting in each
room. Going back to doing that would be a big step backwards for me.

You may consider a product that allows you to display Squeezebox
information on your TV. I know I would never consider viewing on a
tiny screen across the room or on a remote control/phone when I can see
it on a large display which provides artist pictures, news, bio, etc.
It's great for parties, or when friends come over. The product below is
called Softsqueeze which integrate into SageTV Media Center (which isn't
sold anymore). However, I'm sure there must be something for Boxee (or
something like that).

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-06-03 Thread mkanet

Sorry if this has been brought up before, but how do I use my bluetooth
earpiece? When I'm driving in my car, I can't hear the speaker on my
phone. If I press the button on my bluetooth earpiece, I can hear
audio coming from SqueezePlayer for a few seconds before my android
device asks me to... Speak Now (android native bluetooth support).
Then, I lose audio from my earpiece.

This is extremely useful for all the talk-radio stations such as Howard
Stern, etc. The only time I really need to use Squeezeplayer during my
drive to work.

Are bluetooth speakers not supported either?

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback now on ANDROID! SqueezePlayer released to the market ...

2011-06-03 Thread mkanet

I think the link you pointed out to us for bluetooth stereo headsets;
which work differently than single speaker earpieces. They are
different bluetooth services; hence treated differently by the OS (this
is true under any platform that uses standard bluetooth protocol).
Bluetooth earpieces can be explicitly defined to be used as the
active speaker (per app basis). The OS has native support for
bluetooth earpieces that's relatively limited (making phone calls,
global system commands). I actually have 3 completely different
earpieces; they all comply to bluetooth protocol standards and what's
builtin to the Android OS.

Anyway, I was hoping you wouldnt mind testing this yourself to see what
Im talking about.

bluegaspode;634646 Wrote:

Here we had one user where it is working:

SqueezePlayer just hands over the stream to android (like any other
music player would do as well), without manipulating anything on the
 output chain.

When you see 'Speak Now', your earpiece told Android 'mkanet wants to
call someone, let him speak the number'.
I don't know if your earpiece is just for calling someone or if there
is some special mode to just listen to the stream. Guess you need to
look that up on the manual of your earpiece.

Thanks guys. I'll try that app in the meantime until there's native
support for it. I currently dock my phone in the car:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpMk7PKK9MM It would be my dream if one
day all I had to do is press one icon to start the SB client, then
automatically see a list of favorite radio station presets (just like a
normal FM radio), and select the radio station to play (regardless if
the audio is on my earpiece or bluetooth stereo speakers). Currently,
it requires several tedious steps and apps to do something extremely
simple... to just pick a radio station preset to play when you get into
your car on your bluetooth earpiece. Of course, this would require the
cooperation of the Squeeze Commmander developer to help make both apps
seamless and hassle-free... combining all into a simple radio
app/client that can be listened to on a user-defined audio output
(bluetooth earpiece, stereo bluetooth, phone speaker, analog audio 1/8
mini-jack.

Thanks,

If I find out how they work and if it's not too complicated I might
consider implementing such a feature in SqueezePlayer as well.

I'm using 7.5.3 already. It's possible this issue is limited to
softsqueeze. If it's not too much trouble, could you install the
softsqueeze client on any machine on your lan.. then try native sirius
plugin?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/softsqueeze/files/softsqueeze/softsqueeze-3.8/softsqueeze_windows_3_8.exe/download

If you want to keep your PC very clean without any traces of
softsqueeze after testing, you can download the zip file with all the
stuff to get it started:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/softsqueeze/files/softsqueeze/softsqueeze-3.8/softsqueeze_3.8.zip/download

All you have to do is point it to the private LAN IP of your XP server.
I think you have to install the java mp3 audio as well; which is
harmless; and makes java mp3 playback in general sound better:

2011-02-10 Thread mkanet

Hi Gary, the problem You are not authorized... was caused by the
native plugin. I'm guessing this issue doesnt happen on newer
squeezebox clients. It was suggested by a fellow user with the same
issue to use the Notsosirius plugin to avoid that error; which it fixed
the problem immediately. I've been very happy with the Notsosirus for
several months. However, now that Sirius changed their website to the
new webplayer, it broke Notsosirius plugin.

Just for fun, I reverted back to the native plugin, but it hasn't
changed any in it's behavior... it produces the You are not
authorized error within 2-3 seconds. I've already reported this issue
to Andy about 1-2 years ago, unfortunately it doesnt look like he was
able to fix the issue.

Luckily, the author of Notsosirius is one step ahead of us, he already
posted on this google website just recently that his plugin is
officially broken:

---
http://code.google.com/p/notsosirius-squeezecenter/
News
02/07/2011 - Well crap
It seems Sirius updated the player on the US site, so until I get a
chance to fix it the plugin is officially broken. Sirius Canada is
still using the old player, so there shouldn't be any problems there.
---

Hence, currently, no way to use sirius anymore for people who get the
You are not authorized bogus error message.

Re: [slim] What did I do to get all my local FM radio station in favorites?

2011-01-24 Thread mkanet

BPA, I really appreciate your time and help.

Just to be clear the problem in the display is not limited to
softsqueeze and other software players. I can see the same kind of
mess up in SBS's display as well. Its obvious to me the feed itself
includes metadata thats not specifically formatted for Squeezebox
products. It looks like they were meant more for the iphone/itunes; as
they mention Iphone Akamai and itunes in feed metadata.

Here's what these radio stations look like in SBS:
[image:
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h283/mkanet/Screenshot-1384.jpg]

I'm not sure why it would look correctly for someone else's squeezebox
hardware client; but not look correctly in SBS. However, this doesnt
prove that the Internet radio stations that display correctly don't
come from the same provider/source; all I can see is they display
correctly (both in SBS and softsqueeze. I can't see any data beyond
Artist name/Song title/Station Name on the ones that display
correctly.

Logs will help as it will indicate what metadata is being received.

I'm a bit confused about where you see the differences - since you only
have software players - does this issue show up between two software
players - if so which ones ?

Re: [slim] What did I do to get all my local FM radio station in favorites?

I'm pretty sure it affects all classic players using the original
Squeezebox protocol. There are several FM channels that got added that
dont have that weird information added though.

I'm more curious about how those channels got in the favorites list.
Is it automatic? I'm trying to remember where I put in my zipcode or
where I enabled the feature for local FM stations.

Re: [slim] What did I do to get all my local FM radio station in favorites?

2011-01-23 Thread mkanet

Classic refers to the first generation of hardware (and software)
clients and respective protocol.

The text you see in that picture is a string of characters fed from SBS
its not a bitmap.. the only thing thats bitmap is picture of the
software player. If you do a CLI query artist ?, you can see the
artist name displayed in a string of characters, etc.

Here's a picture of softsqueeze doing the same thing on the same
channel.

[image:
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h283/mkanet/Screenshot-1380.jpg]

From the same set of FM radio stations that got added to favorites,
there are some FM stations that provide the correct text data. There's
more to it than just audio difference.

Sincerely,
MKANET

bpa;604610 Wrote:
What do you mean by classic ?

AFAIK The info displayed on screen originates as a bitmap from SBS and
is the same for device with same pixel height width i.e. SB3 and
Softsqueeze even though audio capabilities may differ. So I don't
believe slimproto is the cause unless you have a non standard display
 on your softplayers.

Re: [slim] What did I do to get all my local FM radio station in favorites?

Oh interesting! So SBS determines my location based on my ISP and
automatically adds the channels without any setting changes?

toby10;604614 Wrote:
No zip code needed, MySB simply uses GEO IP to figure out where you are,
therefore what stations are local to you.
Sometimes this GEO IP guessing can be very specific or very general
based on how your ISP assigns and reports it's IP's.
Example: If you live in NJ but use a NYC based ISP then GEO IP may
guess that you are in NYC and not offer your NJ locals, or may lump in
NYC and NJ both as your locals.
Or it may guess correctly that you are actually in NJ and not in NYC.

So, if desired, you can enter your zip code into the RadioTime App
which will offer much more specific locals in the above NYC/NJ
 example.
RadioTime is the source for all items found in the menu item Internet
Radio, with the exception of the Staff Picks.

Re: [slim] What did I do to get all my local FM radio station in favorites?

2011-01-23 Thread mkanet

This went way over my head. Maybe I'm really dense, what would explain
that some FM chanels that were added look 100% correct on softsqueze;
but some channels like KMEL looks incorrect on softsqueeze; but look
correct on newer clients. It seems that these older clients dont
display some of these FM Favorites correctly. Howeever, some of these
FM favorites that get added, look 100% correct (such as FM channel KOIT
in screenshot below).

So, when slimplayer exposes these weird display issues and SB3 shows
the same channel correctly, where is the problem? There are other FM
Favorites channels that get added that dont have this display problem.
Such as the below screenshot. So what's different between the channels
with correct text displayed and the ones that aren't on Softsqueeze:

[image:
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h283/mkanet/Screenshot-1381.jpg]

Maybe, this is something that can be fixed in slimplayer itself. The
picture you see is a software player that uses the latest
softsqueeze.jar; only adding cosmetic enhancements (its just a UI
shell).

Thanks for all your help guys!

Thanks BPA. What I dont understand is why half of all the local FM
channels display Artist, Song Title, Favorite name correctly; while the
rest of the FM channels do not. Wouldn't missing META support cause the
same symptom for all the FM channels?

Anyway, I could be happy to run debug logs if you think the logs could
help you fix the problem. I dont use dedicated hardware clients...
only software based.

Thanks again for all your help,

I did a bit more digging.

Softsqueeze does not implement one slimproto command META. This
command passes back metadata back from player to SBS for display on
player, WebUI etc. Softsqueeze does not implement the command so
 metadata is extracted by SBS.

So it is possible that SBS extraction of metadata is different to a
hardware player. You can check this by enabling logging for
player.streaming.remote to DEBUG and then run a test by
starting/stopping playing a station on Softsqueeze and on a hardware
 player.

Log lines as follows are metadata received from player
 Slim::Player::Protocols::HTTP::ParseMetadata (153) Icy metadata
 received: StreamTitle='Nemesis - Koobi Fora';StreamUrl='';

Log lines as below are metadata extracted by SBS
 Slim::Player::Protocols::HTTP::readMetaData (115) Metadata:
 StreamTitle='Nemesis - Koobi Fora';StreamUrl='';

[slim] Trying to listen to squeezebox audio stream in web browser not working

2010-11-05 Thread mkanet

It looks like from the posts I've seen in the past, I should be able to
go to:

http://myserverip:9000/stream.mp3 (using any media player that plays
back streamed mp3s) ...and hear what I can hear on a squeezebox client.
Unfortunately, although, I can see a valid stream loading continuously,
there is no sound. I can tell there is a valid stream since the media
players I've tried all show that they are decoding a continuous mp3
stream... but, there's just no audio.

The reason I'm trying to do this is so I can hopefully have some way of
listening to squeezebox on my android phone. It would be nice if
Squeeze Commander had audio.

Maybe someone has a very easy way of using Squeeze Commander +
listening to the audio (which I dont know how to do correctly to get
sound).

I even tried playing back the audio stream even on the server itself:
http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3 but still, there is no sound. During
this time, I can hear my client playing back audio.

I am using LAME to transcode everything to mp3/128kbps. I dont know if
that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance,
Michael

[slim] Is a a real Squeezebox client for Android on the works?

2010-08-10 Thread mkanet

I'm not sure if this is too much to ask (or if it's been requested
before); but, all I want is a real client to comfortably playback my
squeezebox channels the same way Squeezeplay and Softsqueeze do on PC
and linux based clients. I already know there's a pretty clunky way of
using Squeeze Commander along with manually tuning into the squeezebox
stream. Unfortunately, that's not even close to being a feasible
solution.

I dont know enough about java to comprehend the difficulties. But,
isn't it as relatively simple as loading the latest Softsqueeze java
code (which works very nicely IMO) and recompile it for Android's
flavor of Java... only making minor compatibility changes for the audio
playback device on Android? Perhaps, it's nowhere near that simple and
could require a complete rewrite of the code from scratch; hence would
explain why it appears nobody capable of doing this, taking on this
task; even with money from Google Market customers as an incentive. I
would gladly pay even $29 for a fully featured client.

This is the only way I know how to have only one trouble-free app on
the Android that can play Sirius Radio (with no lame limits), Pandora,
Slacker, Napster, and all my music collect in just one self-contained
interface.

Sorry if this request has been brought up before in a dedicated thread;
but, haven't seen it.

Re: [slim] Is a a real Squeezebox client for Android on the works?

2010-08-10 Thread mkanet

Wow Christian, thank you so much for such an informative reply; and so
quick! I was scared I would end up just attracting people here
offering their opinions/speculation with no mention of actual good
solutions on the works.  At this point, I wouldnt care how it's done;
as long as it's only just a simple app with a simple interface that
navigates (and plays back) my SB channels with the option to just
default to a list of my favorite channels that can be streamed to my
android device with a a single click.

So, I'm guessing using the open-source code for softsqueeze on
android's java compiler is just as hard as doing the whole thing from
scratch. I'm actually a minority here.. still preferring Softsqueeze
3.9b2 over Squeezeplay on my PC based clients.

Thanks again for your post!
Michael

flattermann;567998 Wrote:
Well, the native playback feature is still on my TODO list, but it's
really not as easy as it seems.

I'll probably first implement a stream.mp3 based solution in
SqueezeCommander. It should be transparent for the user (i.e. it can be
started/stopped directly in SqueezeCommander and avoid some of the well
known problems with an external streaming app (like high latency)).

But this solution will still inherit some problems of stream.mp3,
namely that you need a SBS server with a good CPU and that it will not
 work on MySB. :-/

Implementing a real player (i.e. implementing the complete SlimProto
protocol) is a tough task - ask pippin from iPeng. ;-)
Anyway, this is my preferred long-term solution (because it will allow
things like MySB access (if Logitech will allow it), syncronisation and
so on) but that will definitely still take some more months... :-/

 Sorry.

Yeah, I tried briefly to port SoftSqueeze to Android but failed
 miserably.
Let's put the licensing issue aside for a moment (it may be possible to
 release it as GPL'ed app).
But (for me) porting SoftSqueeze ended in dependency-hell. SoftSqueeze
depends on SO many libraries (many of them will not run Android), that
I finally gave up on this approach.

I think the only proper way would be to create a completely new Android
app from scratch (maybe take some of the SqueezePlay code as base).

That what pippin and I will try in the future, but it is really pretty
 complicated.

Re: [slim] You are not authorized=Sirius You are logged in in another location=Slacker

2010-02-20 Thread mkanet

Toby, Andy definitely knows about this issue. He even knows its related
just to slacker and sirius. I just quietly knudged him a few moments
ago to take a look at it again. According to him its nothing we're
doing wrong; and, suggested this issue isn't an easy one to track down.
The good news is Andy has never dropped the ball (that I know of) on any
issue before. BTW. I rolled all the way back cleanly to squeezecenter
7.2.1 (which never gave me any issues at all), but still saw the issue
happen.. maybe just a little less frequently.

Very strange and has never happened before unless I was indeed logged
 in on another device.

Re: [slim] You are not authorized=Sirius You are logged in in another location=Slacker

2010-02-15 Thread mkanet

Andy, I hope you dont mind that I share with others having this issue
that you're completely aware of this issue and actively working on it.

Here's the update guys:
According to Andy, this doesnt appear to be an issue with our
hardware/software; you could have a perfectly legitimate configuration
and setup; but still have this problem. He said, -could be an obscure
bug, I'll have to go through the code and see-

I did think it was kind of unusual that he didnt need any form of debug
information when the error occurs. I think he's definitely on the right
track... he knows that this happens in Sirius and Slacker only; since we
have to depend on mysqueezebox.com clustered servers to reach sirius.com
a slacker.com.

In a perfect world, the squeezebox software would just access the music
sevices directly to avoid network outages and issues like this, less
lag time, etc. It doesnt make sense to depend on an extra proxy to
get to the music service. This appears to be a licensing/legal-type
issue. However, if that's the only way it can be done, then I'm
grateful we at least have this ability. It would be even better once it
works correctly for us.

Knowing Andy's past encounters in fixing obscure bugs like a cyborg, I
wouldn't be surprised if he figures it out relatively soon; afterall, he
knows the code better than anyone I've see here.

Good luck Andy and please keep us posted!

[slim] I dont expect anyone to know the answer to this (except for andy) but here it goes..

2010-02-14 Thread mkanet

Okay, I know you guys are going to be EXTREMELY tempted to answer my
question with a completely unrelated question; so, I ask kindly to
please dont bother :)

Anyway, I have finally made a big discovery in an issue I've had for
several month. I always wanted to know why I started getting errors
related me being logged into another device (which I clearly wasnt) on
different squeezenetwork dependent services (ie pandora, slacker,
sirius, etc). Starting from SqueezeServer 7.3.0 and up; or more
precisely, the last possible version that didnt have this issue was
SqueezeCenter 7.2.1

Interestingly, In SqueezeCenter 7.2.1, I could keep all my music
services (even the ones that come from squeezenetwork.com) to MP3
Streaming Method=Direct Streaming.

However, whatever happened to the code between 7.2.1 and 7.3., caused
multiple issues (possibly related).

Issue #1: I have to set MP3 Streaming Method=Proxied Streaming, if I
want Pandora to work; which of course, this setting wont just affact
Pandora.

Issue #2: This is the worst symptom of all and deal breaker for me to
use any new versions of the server.. I get the dreaded You're logged
into another device, You are not authorized, You are loggged into
another location. etc... depending on the service. Ironically, it
doesnt happen to Pandora. It an vary anywhere from 3 minutes of
playback to 25 minutes tops.

Issue #3: The quality sounds almost like it's having a had time
decoding the audio with micro-dropouts... just enough to be annoying.
Again, I dont hear this degradation in Pandora as far as I can tell.
Usually, progressively getting worse

I reverted to a clean copy of the latest 7.2.1 build; and everything
works great.. song take a fraction of a second (almost instantly) to
start as opposed to 2-5 seconds to start (using proxied mode/ver
7.2.1).

7.2.1 actualy looks like a smaller package, less executables, and
probably all around tighter in the overall code (but that's just my
perception).

bOkay here's he question: What steps am I missing if I want to
use/install the Napster plugin provided in version 7.3.x? It was very
easy to just copy the folder and its contents to the respective place
and change the min version to 7.2.1 in the XML file. It even gets
loaded into memory in the list of plugins in the web interface.
However, there's one little thing Im missing. I cant see it it the
listd in the list of my music services; nor will my napster://radio:
radio stations work either.

I figured it would take much less time for someone like Andy to just
quick ly say what file needs to be added/modified for napster to work
under 7.2.1 than having to have developers respond back and forth no
bugzilla going back to the drawing board several revisions, etc. It
woult just be easier adding an unsupported Napster plugin; especiallly
since I have it already regisered under mysqueezebox.com. I know theres
only a small part left... and since I'm the only one who seems to have
noticed this issue, it would be easier to get a fix for this that than
potentially redoing a significant portion of the server just for a few
people who noticeed the problem.

[slim] Trying to get Squeezebox to send Now Playing to Trillian Astra without writing a app

2010-02-10 Thread mkanet

It seems everywhere I look there's a plugin for apps Astra, MIRC, Aim,
Yahoo, MSN, etc to accept Winamp, WMP, MPC currently playing song.

Several years after asking for a feature request in Slimserver,
Squeezecenter, Squeezebox to provide a clever way to support feeding
multiple apps with some kind of Now Playing status, without success,
I thought it might be just easier for squeezebox to pretent it's Winamp
or Windows Media Player when providing the currently playing song for at
least having some way of getting now playing to *Trillian Astra*

I spent a lot of time figuring out a way to do something with Last.FM's
audioscrobbler RSS feed; but, since I'm not a software engineer, I can't
make an app which simply updates Currently Playing to all social
networking, chat apps via audioscrbler. I think that would be a great
idea; and, probably the best way to do it.

Perhaps there are other people here who use trillian or Astra which
would love to have their Squeezebox specific clients' playback show up
in their status. Trillian Astra developers seem to feel WinAmp, Windows
Media Player, Itunes, even Media Player classic to have native support
for now playing.

Does anyone know have an easy way to get this working in Astra? Its
hard to believe Logitech Squeezebox isnt popular enough for Trillian
Astra to support it.

I even tried something ridiculously desperate by putting my
audioscrobbler RSS link under Trillian's status, custom message... but
doesnt accept URLS.

I dont know, maybe what I'm asking is still a little too ahead of it's
time and need to be patient for Squeezebox to become even more popular
for people like Trillian to be excited to support natively

I searched some kind of tool that support Trillian Astra, but

Thanks for your suggestion. I upgraded from Pidgin to Astra as soon
as Astra become available via beta. I used Pidgin for longer than you
might guess; and, definitely prefer it over the last generation Trillian
because of the active plugin support...

Please dont beat me up for saying this... because it might make you
pretty upset, but lets face it, Pidgin badly needs a complete overhaul
to update itself for modern OS's; and, also really could use the ability
to run in a browser without having to install a client... even Meebo
does that. I'll definitely consider switching back to Pidgin; but,
waiting for a completely renovated, next generation version (the same
way classic Trillian evolved to Astra may take years to catch up. Below
is a screenshot of my desktop with Astra... blending into all modern day
apps... However, no matter how great Astra is, it still doesnt have
Squeezebox support damnit! :)

Re: [slim] You are not authorized=Sirius You are logged in in another location=Slacker

2010-02-07 Thread mkanet

Toby, thank you so much for replying and trying to help. I'm a network
engineer for over 18 years; and understand some things are very hard to
prove without a very good logging system on the backend/protocol
analyzer (on the mysqueezebox.com side).

I definitely got rid of all other instances of slacker. The key thing
to realize is it's not related to just one mysqueezebox.com dependant
service. Also, the services I use (Slacker and Sirius) worked great a
while back before your backend was changed; hence, looking at the
mysqueezebox.com component as a factor. I have seen this issue happen a
little after Logitech bought this technology; and, changes started
happening after SqueezeCenter 7.2.1 to the backend. Let's face it,
there aren't a whole lot of options to work with on my local Squeezebox
server; and, I only have two squeezebox clients. Whatever it is, I use
two separate accounts on the mysqueezebox.com side for each music
service... and MOST IMPORTANTLY... this doesnt happen to simple music
stations that use mp3 playlists (which my clients contact directly to;
instead of getting mysqueezebox.com in the mix.

Whatever the problem is, it wasn't a problem when we used the older
backend along with squeezecenter 7.2.1 (which isnt that long ago).
Whoever works on the back end should probably have a clue what changed
during that period along with the hints I posted. I sure as heck hope,
the engineers dont just sweep this issue under the rug hoping people
will stop complaining about it. It doesnt happen to many people, but
there are certain configurations which trigger this and cause
mysqueezebox.com to muff things up.

 else to suggest. :(

Re: [slim] Is there a way to send song info (now playing) to Trillian chat?

2010-02-07 Thread mkanet

I'm actually thinking of the bigger picture with a easy way to relay
this information to multiple social networking/chat networks...

One thing to our advantage is squeezebox server does a ok job sending
played songs to audioscrobbler's RSS feed via your lastFM account.

Since facebook, twitter, trillian, aim, yahoo, etc all have their own
way of displaying a status message, it makes sense to look for a common
standard. ie, an RSS or ATOM feed.

It probably wouldnt take too long for someone to make small plugins to
something like plugin, facebook, etc to replace the user's status
message with the lastest update from audioscrobbler.

For example:

http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/2.0/user/mkanet/recenttracks.rss

(Please dont laugh at what I listen to :)

I didnt look hard enough for a good solution to do this for at least
Trillian Astra... but, I think RSS might be the way to go since most
apps/sites are RSS-friendly.

If someone figures out a way to do with without requiring for me to
write a universal Now Playing app for various services, I'm sure they
would be a pretty popular person. Music services such as Pandora
already update facebook and twitter... its just a matter of time before
Logitech/squeeze community realizes this is something desirable for
social networking/chat apps like Trillian. I might be just a little bit
ahead of the times... but things are slowly catching on... with people
realizing the benefits of such features...

Yeah, but this is something Logitech mysqueezebox.com engineers do need
to bother with. That's one of their primary responsibilities.

Eventually instead of having squeezebox users give up using

Re: [slim] You are not authorized=Sirius You are logged in in another location=Slacker

2010-02-06 Thread mkanet

I have tried everything in my power to help eliminate these error
messages with various setting changes in squeezebox server such as:

-Power On Resume: Stop at power off/Reset playlist at power on
-Changing the player's Audio MP3 Streaming Method to Direct Streaming
-Disable UPnP Client
-Server priority= -6 Above Normal

I have also added multiple fully registered accounts to Slacker and
Sirius Radio (I had to pay more for these extra accounts) and added
these secondary accounts to separate Squeezebox clients.

I'm not sure which of these helped or not, but the frequency of getting
these error messages (mentioned in the thread title) are less frequent.

I can't pinpoint what is left to eliminate these errors once in for
all; however, I am hoping that Andy could please offer any suggestions
that could prevent these errors.

I still think it would be a good idea for Andy to take a closer look at
the way clients start/stop audio streams; and, see if there's a
provision that could be made on mysqueeebox.com to flush old audio
streams (even if the audio stream is already stopped on the client). As
long as the music service provider doesn't continuing to receive a
ghost/stray audio stream caused by a squeezebox/client audio stream
anomaly in TCP sockets, we should be fine.

All I'm hoping for Andy (I know its a PITA), but having an extra
provision to cleanly stop any previous audio streams under a user
account for respective music service (that's not heard on the client),
it would be greatly appreciated by not only the end user; but, also by
the Internet service provider as well. This would also help reduce
issues on mysqueezebox with audio stream leaks which can prevent having
to restart thebackend (possibly caused by audio stream leaks such as
this).

Of course, the above pararaph is all pure speculation. Not knowing the
techical reasons behind having a backend mysquezebox.com proxy, in
general it makes sense to move over these functionalities to the user's
personal mysqueezebox server... where the user can manually enter their
username/passwords for each music service. This would reduce lag time,
less dependancies, less money/time/resources to maintain
mysqueezebox.com; and just offer an auto-updater for squeezebox.com
server for critical changes. Bottom line, this would also reducethe
likelyhood of unaccounted for audio streams going into the
mysqueezebox.com abyss due to Internet connetion hickups, timeouts, etc
since there's an extra component that's in between the users's
squeezebox server and each music service provider.

Anyway, please.. in the short term goal at least add a provision to use
a more agressive method to cut off any previous ghost/remnant audio
connections to the respective music service (caused by TCP/IP connetion
hickups not recovered correctly) before starting a new song/station
from the same service provider.

Thanks for your time to help improve the reliability of your service.

Sincerely,

Re: [slim] You are not authorized=Sirius You are logged in in another location=Slacker

2010-02-05 Thread mkanet

There seems to be a couple of different issues related to this. The
first issue can be resolved by defining more than one account for each
music service on mysqueezebox.com (for example, I now have two Internet
user accounts for sirius/xm radio (which I pay extra for). I also have
two users accounts defined for the other subscription based music
services on mysqueezebox.com. This at least protects this issue from
happening every 5-10 minutes.

However,

There is another related issue with the mysqueezebox.com backend in
respect to problem; whether the developers want to admit it or not. I'm
using a completely different setup than you (using good old faithful
softsqueeze.jar clients. This issue seems to happen even in cases where
there are only one player. However, any little hickcup; such as a pause
in the audio stream; caused by another possibly unrelated TCP/IP
connection with a greater QOS precedence (disrupting the currently
playing autio stream, is enough to trigger this error message when
trying to recover from it and playback from the same subscription based
music provider.

Unfortunately, no matter how many people complain about this or post
bug reports; dont seem to get a definitive fix for this. I'm guessing
most of the developers are either dialed into the logitech network via
VPN or physically close to their mysqueezebox.com server(s) which would
reduce the likelyhood of the audio stream getting disrupted.

I guess if I had a dedicated point-point circuit to the
mysqueezebox.com server or on the same LAN, I wouldn't have this issue
unless mysqueezebox.com server is bogged down with too many user
requests being proxied from the music provider source.

There are probably settings in Squeezebox server which can increase the
streaming buffer; but, could possibly cause other adverse side effects.
I only have the default 3 second buffer under audio settings using LAME
at full quality and no transcoding (original bitrate from music
provider). I also have a high quality sustainable 62mbps downstream
Internet connection; which is definitely not the issue.

We are at the mercy of a developer kind enough to investigate this
issue. I dont want to open up multiple duplicate bug reports. They
will either fix this issue or not. I never had this issue before
Logitech came into the scene and the backend was changed.

It happened again. I tried using direct stream instead of proxied audio
stream... however, I got the same result. I am certain I dont have any
players using this same slacker account. It's pretty straight forward
to setup. Whatever it is, there needs an adjustment to the backend
which handles Internet subscrption based services. I never EVER see
this happen to my radio stations which go directly to the source instead
of depending on the clunky logitech subscriber proxies. One way to fix
it is to revert back to what you guys had back before Logitech got a
hold of your backend services; although, there were less services that
were supported. This issue never happened using Squeezecenter 7.2.1 and
whatever the backend was at the time.

Trillian, WinAmp, Itunes, AIM, Facebook status, MySpace, what song is
being played on my squeezebox? I realized there have been multiple
posts about this (from me and others), but just wondering if anyone
figured out some underground indirect way to do this either with
Trillian Astra, Itunes, WinAmp, Facebook... anything at all.

If not, maybe someone that knows light programming can figure out a way
to get this to work; even if its clunky... anything would be better than
nothing at all..

That way, we can have status messages like MKANET is busy listening to
Michael Jackson -Beat It in the Living Room.

Re: [slim] You are not authorized=Sirius You are logged in in another location=Slacker

2010-02-05 Thread mkanet

It's actually not slackers fault. Nor Sirius radio which has a very
similar message. It's the people who maintain the code for
mysqueezebox.com. They screwed up sometime a little after Logitech took
over. I've been tring to get his to andy's attention; however, it's not
something simple he can just revert to quickly. A lot of changes were
made since the time it was working correctly; such as adding more
services.

There's really no way around this; even if you have multiple legitamate
accounts; which tried. The problem is with the same account, same
player... mysqueezebox.com seems to somehow leave some kind of lingering
ghost audio stream behind after a song change... making the music
service provider like sirius/slacker to think there are two songsbeing
played at the same time on the same machine. The sad thing is I dont
think this is something I can control even on my firewall by killing the
older duplicate audio stream since I think the issue is at the logitech
backend and they way it provisions audio streams for each music
service.

Oh Andy... feel like fixing this once in for all instead of passing
it on to another backend server engineer by asking for a bugzilla
report? I'm sure there's at least been a couple of reported already.

*RANT MODE ON*
I really wish Logitech/mysqueezebox.com would just get out of the way
and allow direct connections between our squeezebox servers and the
music providers. This would also prevent those down times when
mysqueezebox.com isnt down for maintenance; also, reducing lag. I can
name several reasons actually.

*RANT MODE OFF*

Re: [slim] Slacker Error Message

2010-02-04 Thread mkanet

I've spent countless hours trying to figure out what triggers this, but
whatever it is; its caused by Logitech's backend servers interacting
with the clients. This only occurs with mysqueezebox.com related
subscription services.

Sirius playback = You are not authorized...
Slacker plaback = You are logged in on another device, press PLAY to
rest...

My guess is its something to do with the changes in the mysqueeebox
backend servers since they were upgraded a little after SqueezeCenter
7.2.1

Andy, you would probably have a better idea what kinds of changes
happened at that time to cause the mis-management of audio streams. I
can understand the original reason behind adding such provisions... to
concerve unnecessary bandwidth. However, in this case, most of us are
just trying to play on one player and still get this message; so, I dont
think bandwidth is a concern.

The easiest way to fix this issue is to disable this limitation on
Logitech's backend servers. This is obviously a bogus error message 99%
of the time.

Andy, I dont know if you have the power to do this, but it might not be
a bad idea to disble these error messages and prevent stopping the
client playing back audio until you guys figure out a much better way to
implement whatever it is you guys were trying to do, in a better way (or
just leave it off). The source music services such as Slacker, Sirius,
Pandora, etc dont mind if you have more than one player using the same
account; and, in my opinion neither should Logitech.. Since this issue
appears to be benign in most cases that this has been reported.

The bug report may take a while, but maybe you could sneak in a
temporary disable of this; amending the notes to the current bug report
until there's a better fix.

Thanks for your understand to us loyal users.

Michael

2010-02-04 Thread mkanet

Andy, thats exactly what I'm talking about... It's the opposite of what
youre saying... People dont get interupted because they have two
sessions open at the same time... its Logitech that does it. I'm
listening two different songs at the same time... same slacker
account... same machine. I can use a different machine... still no
issues. The problem is with the logitech backend taking it's own
initiative to cut off these streams.

Re: [slim] Slacker Error Message

2010-02-04 Thread mkanet

Oh okay... Yeah I tried it on two different PC and got logged out
immediately on both sirius and slacker!

I'm not sure if this is even an option or not... but what are the
chances you could allow mysqueezebox.com to allow multiple usernames per
service? For example, my Sirius Radio Internet account has two
completely separate logins under my primary account... I just pay a
little extra. With Slacker, I could easily create two separate
accounts.

Adding this ability would allow my family members to use multiple radio
stations at the same time via their squeezebox clients instead of
fighting over who gets to use Sirius Radio or Slacker in the mornings
getting ready for work. I dont think this would require a whole lot of
extra code on the backend; and, certainly can add value to people who
use their squeezebox products.

What do you think? Is this a harmless feature request?

Puulase! :) I already have two separate sirius radio
accounts for me and my brother; however, we cant listen in different
rooms sirius radio in two separate rooms unless he decides not to use
his squeezebox.

What do you think? It would certainly get rid of this error messages

2009-11-11 Thread mkanet

Thanks for the quick reply Andy. Does this mean that there's actually
someone trying to use my account logins? It seems more plausible that
connections arent handled correctly from the source all the way to the
client playing back the audio verses someone outside my home logging in
using my accounts. My slacker account is free.

If there isnt actually someone logging in my with accounts somewhere
else, is the problem with my clients? Are there instances where this
happens on certain clients verses others under certain circumstances? I
would like to at least know where to start looking.

Thanks again for any help you can offer Andy.

Also try doing the same with your MySB.com account, completely log off

I know for a while some providers considered your computer logged into
MySB and the hardware player as two distinct login's and would not

This may have been corrected since then and may no longer apply.

[slim] You are not authorized=Sirius You are logged in in another location=Slacker

2009-11-10 Thread mkanet

In the past, I've just been shrugging it off when I sometimes get the
you are not authorized to listen message for Sirius or You are logged
in another location for Slacker. I just select the station again and
push play again and it works the next time. However, they're starting
to get pretty annoying. I'm hoping to prevent unnecessary error
messages if possible.

Are these two errors related? Are they known issues? When doing
searches, I do find references to these messages, but didnt find a
solution.

When I get these messages, my other clients arent even on. I have
never given my account information to anyone else before. Is there a
way to prevent these bogus errors from showing?

I've seen this ever since server version 7.0. I still see it in 7.4.

2008-10-01 Thread mkanet

I found the problem. I just realized I am using something that calls
the CLI very 5 seconds. The developer's response when I asked for him
to fix this problem is below. Any chance you can make a little change
in the next nightly build to keep it quiet during the below query:

Michael,

It's a bug in squeezecenter. SlimPlayer plugin issues the following CLI
commands repeatedly (5 seconds apart):
playerid artist ?
If the current playing stream is a remote stream (internet radio) then
squeezecenter will fail on the artist ? command and log an error in
server.log.
The CLI api does not state this command is only allowed when non remote
streams are playing, so I consider this to be a bug in SC. In this case
the artist ? query should probably fail silently.

Re: [slim] Slim::Plugin::CLI::Plugin::cli_process (627) Request [artist] failed with error: Bad.

2008-09-27 Thread mkanet

Hi Andy, thanks for responding. I would really appreciate if you could
tell me what I can do next. As far as I know, I thought I just have a
stock version of Squeezecenter 7.2 (upgraded from 7.1.. upgraded from
7.01). I only use Squeezecenter now with Softsqueeze. I seem to get
these errors banging away every second 24/7 with or without
softqueeze.

Thanks for helping out.

[slim] Slim::Plugin::CLI::Plugin::cli_process (627) Request [artist] failed with error: Bad.

2008-09-26 Thread mkanet

Hi, I just realized I am getting a non-stop error message reported in my
server.log file. This error message happens 24/7 once every second. How
can I fix this problem? I am using the latest non-beta release of
SqueezeCenter: verion 7.2

PS: I dont have any 3rd party plugins installed. All my options are
pretty close to their defaults:

Thanks in advance to help get this resolved!

Re: [slim] softsqueeze incompatible with sc7.1

2008-08-15 Thread mkanet

Well, for at least my purposes, I was able to get it to wok fine. What
threw me off was that I didnt see the link to install Softsqueeze 3.6
inside SC; and, I had already uninstalled SQ 3.6. However, it appears
having my softsqueeze files from a previous installation will still
talk to SqueezeCenter.

Re: [slim] softsqueeze incompatible with sc7.1

2008-08-15 Thread mkanet

Before upgrading to SC 7.1, I had uninstall Softsqueeze 3.6... thinking
I was would upgrade to a newer version of Softsqueeze that came with SC
7.1 (installing from the settings menu). However, I don't see the
option to install it under SC's settings menu. I couldn't find a
download URL for Softsqueeze 3.6... only older version.

How do I install Softsqueeze 3.6 under SC 7.1 so it's just like all the
previous versions of SC/Slimserver?

Re: [slim] softsqueeze incompatible with sc7.1

2008-08-15 Thread mkanet

There's an option in SC/Slimserver to install Softsqueeze (under player
settings). At least there's always been one as far back as I can
remember. This would install the latest version of Softsqueeze,
creating a Start Menu group, adding the program in Add/remove programs
with uninstall information. I'm not sure how to do this anymore.

3.6 comes included in 7.1 and the webstart link is on the home page
 under
Extras. If you want access to the jar files, then you can find them in
 HTML/EN/html/softsqueeze

Can't say I remember it ever being under settings. When you have no
other player, you used to get a link in the current playlist section.

There hasn't been an active download site outside of the SC package
 since
before it was renamed to SC.

Re: [slim] softsqueeze incompatible with sc7.1

2008-08-15 Thread mkanet

Okay... I finally found what I was looking for. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, in theory... do you think Softsqueeze will
break/stop working after it's next generation replacement gets
installed?

Click to install and run SoftSqueeze.
You will notice some delay the first time you run SoftSqueeze due to
the need to download the entire SoftSqueeze application. Future uses of
the software will only download parts of the application that have been
changed, if any, and should start much quicker.
You may also be prompted to update your version of Java before
SoftSqueeze itself is started.

ok, I see what you mean. This happens when there are no players
 detected,
same as what appears under the current playlist section.

Since the link was added to the extras menu, I only use that. As I
 have
said before, it's working fine for me. I use it every day.

Softsqueeze IS slated to be replaced, but the idea that someone out
 there
is disabling it is misplaced. It isn't officially supported any
 longer.
A version or two from now, there will be no more link from the home
 page,
but I know of now plans to deliberately disable to remove it from the
subversion repos. Even if that were to come to pass, it's open source.

Install JDK and Ant and you can build it yourself, changing anything
 you
don't like. That part won't change.

So how does Slim Devices expect for us to test client playback via
software?

Is there a Softsqueeze version 3.7 we can download? What's the trick
to make this work? I have a SB Duet sitting in the other room
collecting dust; as I prefer my PC for controlling SC.

This makes zero sense to me. I control my Duet/Receiver with my laptop
all the time. I use the laptop and the web interface more than I use
 my
Controller. Mostly because my fingers are on the laptop keyboard most
 of
the day, and the Controller is two feet away.

Softsqueeze has nothing to do with controlling a Receiver, or a
 Transporter or a SqueezeBox.

Re: [slim] softsqueeze incompatible with sc7.1

Yeah, I didnt say Duet was unusable.. pardon the analogy, but its like
the difference between driving my commute car and decked out sports
car.

I knew about the thing in development, but I didnt expect they would
take out functionality before without having the new one to take it's
place.

Well that hardly makes your Duet unusable.

Softsqueeze is being replaced, the new thing has a new name. Check the
developers' forum. Or the roadmap to see which release it is planned
 to
 be in.

I didn't think Softsqueeze did anything more than use the standard CLI
interface, but I've never been so unhappy with the normal Web
 interface
 to look under the covers.

[slim] How do I put my Sirius Radio channels back into my daily Alarms?

2008-07-22 Thread mkanet

I used to have a playlist called Howard 101 which played Sirius Radio
channel 101 in my daily Alarms. One day, all of a sudden, I dont have
this playlist anymore listed in the alarm pull down menu selection. I
can only select to play current playlist (which is not what I want).

I can't remember how I added a single sirius channel as a single
playlist (to be used in my alarm)... not a default playlist with
multiple items in it.

Can someone please tell me how to add it back please? Currently my
playlists section is completely empty.

Thanks in advance for the quick responses!

Re: [slim] Filing Bugs - Any Point?

2008-06-04 Thread mkanet

I also filed a reproducible bug which affects ALL users of Softsqueeze
SqueezeCenter 7.xx and Music services.

All my attempts to get a developer to acknowledge and fix the problem
have been blatantly ignored. I even made sure the problem I'm
reporting can be reproduced by 2nd tier support staff at (Logitech
Slimdevices support).

I know that some people who only use SqueezeBoxes dont want to hear
this, but Logitech needs to face it that there's still a large number
of people who use SoftSqueeze for its significant advantages over
hardware based Squeezeboxes (ie, ability for customizations such as
support for bluetooth speakers and headphones and remote control with
your mobile phone via bluetooth, integration of a nicer interface into
your HDTV's display with the convenience of only one remote control,
having full access to it via Internet such as from work, laptop on a
trip, etc).

Not charging for officially distributed software isn't a good reason to
blatantly ignore reproducible issues being reported which affect a good
number of people. I certainly wouldn't mind paying for the software
product if it would motivate Logitech to fix very basic and
reproducible software issues in a timely fashion.
