[slim] Alternative To Multiple Genre

2014-08-03 Thread ntom

Bit rusty on SB set up now as my system has been running sweetly
smoothly for so long, I haven't had to play with it I just tag and add
new music as and when.

However with the (gradual) increase in hi-res downloads, my issue has
started to get a bit irritating at times. Not sure if there is a simple
solution.

I listen to minimal classical so most of myslistening is to mainstream /
jazz. I use the genre tag effectively for album genre. Close enough
for me. However with an increasing number of DD / DTS rips, HiRes
downloads i've added a 2nd genre.

I play a lot of stuff via the random song option. The rub comes with
the fact that I have 6 squeezeboxes a mix of SB2 (1) / SB3 (3) /
Touch (2).

One touch is in my serious system... with seperate DAC facility to
take DTS passthru etc, so all is good. The second touch will handle
24/96, but not DTS o DD. The remainder obviously won't play any DD /
DTS or 24/96.

If I could skip these tracks it would be great. However if I use the
select genre option include a track with say a 24/96 genre tag a
rock genre tag, then exclude 24/96 from the genre list, it still
obviouly plays because the rock tag is included... i.e. silence or
worse...loud white noise.

Is there any simple way of dealing with this that I am missing? I
have my underlying directory structure set up to reflect these
differences so could easily seperate.

Suggestions appreciated.

Re: [slim] Playlists

2010-06-02 Thread ntom

I believe on my version of the server multiple genres can be added as
either:

Rock\\Wife
Rock;Wife

MP3Tag will create multiple tags in the first instance and a single tag
in the second. In the second case you need to make sure that
Squeezeserver has ; defined as a separator.

I use the second method as that way the whole tag is shown in MP3Tag
explorer Window (using the first method only the firts tag is shown in
the explorer windowas far as I can see!!)

You can create your own tags squeezebox will just report them no
set up required.

Re: [slim] Transporter Bitrate Question

2010-05-31 Thread ntom

By coincidence just noticed the same thing on my standard Classic
Squeezebox (playing through a separate DAC). I believe the Classic
can't throughput 24/96 but downsamples at the server.

The track info for a 24/96kHz before it is selected for playing shows
Bitrate:3183kbps VBR. Once the track is actually playing the same
info shows: Bitrate:3183kbps VBR (Coverted to 705.6kbps ABR).
This doesn't happen with 44.1 tracks so assumed this was an indication
it has been downsampled.

If that's so, then maybe that's what's happening with your Transporter
but if so there must be a setting somewhere to handle 24/96 without
downsampling!

As far as volume adjustment is concerned you must have volume levelling
turned on somewhere in you ripping process -I replay gain.

Disabling the firewall fixed the ODBC query error. Now runs OK on my

Yes: you are right if there are two artists listed (using the ;

I must confess that I have not been consistent in how I tag things with
more than 1 artist.

Success!

I still haven't managed to get past the 3716 error 'safety settings on
this computer prohibit accessing a data source on another domain' on my
office PC or my musicserver. I am able to access the database from the
office PC for tagging etc with no problem.

So as a last resort tried it on my laptop. I had an ODBC access
problem at first. Disabling Windows XP firewall on the server solved
this problem and I have produced my first reports! Needed a little
tidying of tags to get repots looking good.

Brilliant application!

The only slightly odd looking thing I have left is where I have both a
track and album artist defined, each track is listed twice, once for
the track artist once for the album artist.
e.g. Loudmouth -Best of Bob Geldof the Boomtown Rats. Some tracks
are credited to Bob Geldof (TrackArtist) some to the Boomown Rats
(TrackArtist) but I have AlbumArtist=Bob Geldof the Boomtown Rats!

Is there a way of defeating this so that the track is only printed once
for either AlbumArtist or TrackArtist?

New to this thread but had a look at ACC info looks just what I'm

Unfortunately I am getting the same 3716 error 'safety settings on this

I tried older versions with exactly the same problem right back to

I have tried it on both the SC machine a remote machine with same
result.
I am running XP Home Edition on the SqueezeCenter machine XP Media

I have been having similar problems since moving to SC7 with stuttering

Someone suggested turning off the LastFM plugin which has helped a lot.
It gone from being entirely usable to being about 85% reliable. It
does still happen occasionally when the buffer just sits there at 0%
for a few seconds before re-filling (and I don't mean at the end of
tracks).

Try it post back your experience.

Re: [slim] Choppy playback, unlistenable :

2008-07-07 Thread ntom

I came across this thread:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=45220

which suggested turning off the LastFM plugin.

This has greatly reduced the stuttering problems for me. I have
noticed stuttering once or twice since but it is way better and only
happens on high bit rate stuff which suggests a link with network
capacity, although I did not have these probs with 6.5. If I try
synchronising the wireless boxes this will also kick it off.

Why should SC7 be more affected by network performance than 6.5 why
should synchronising two boxes cause it when two completely different
streams don't?

And does anyone have any idea as to why turning the LastFM pluging off
should have any effect?

Re: [slim] Choppy playback, unlistenable :

2008-06-22 Thread ntom

Anyone got anywhere with this problem?

I decided to try synchronising my players today -first time i've ever
tried it. My players (2 x SB2 on wireless 1 SB3 on ethernet) were
fine individually (7.0.1 SC) before. Now I've just got a new laptop so
I logged on to this to set SC to synchoronise the players. Then tried
playing a track the whole network hung. I spotted an error mesage on
my laptop saying I had assigned a duplicate IP on the laptop which
clashed with one of the wireless SBs.

No prbs I thought -I changed the IP re-booted laptop. Turned router
off on re-started network.

But now the SB that had the IP clash will not play at all. It stutters
a little but the buffer remains fimly at 0% or 1%. Signal strength is
fine at 60%. It was all working fine before this. The other wireless
player (which incidentally is several rooms away so has a worse signal)
is fine. The wired player is fine.

Somewhere the system is hung up with this player. The symptoms sound
like those that others have posted. When I do network test on this one
player every level fails. On the other players it is fine.

I've tried doing a hard re-set on the SB2 concerned and setting up from
scratch. No change. So I guess the problem is at the server end. I'm
sure a re-install would solve the problem but I'd rather try get to
the bottom of this if possible.

Anyone able to suggest if there are any files I could clear out on the
server to get it working again? I seem to recall a 'drop player'
option at 6.5 but cant find it at 7.0.1

Help!!

Re: [slim] Choppy playback, unlistenable :

2008-06-22 Thread ntom

Don't know if this will help anyone else but I've cleared my problem.

I tried evrything I could think of: re-start router, server,
squeezebox, hard re-set of SB, changed IP adress, turned DHCP on,
forced re-load of firmware etc etc and nothing worked -all to no
avail.

Eventually I tried connecting by ethernet it was fine -did a network
test rock solid 100% on every level. Disconnected from ethernet
re-connected via wireless hey presto fully functioning again -100% at
5000kbps.

So somehow this cleared the block straightened out the hang-up wherever
it was.

Hope this helps someone out there to track down whats happening.
Before I did this it was totally non-functioning -the buffer just never
filled or filled so slowly that it would play a fraction of a second
then pause.

Just a couple of thoughts as I have had this problem a few times.

With my router network [3 desktops, server, laptop 4 SB boxes] I
was for ever getting general connection problems with wifi until I
abandoned dhcp assigned ip addresses manually.

Secondly, i have 2 x SB2's 2 SB3's. One of the SB2's will
occasionally 'lose' it's MAC settings. It'll happen when it gets
powered down. Correcting the MAC address allows it to connect again

Re: [slim] can SB do lossless FLAC 5.1?

2008-05-21 Thread ntom

Many DVD-A discs have a hi-res stereo mix as well as 5.1 surround mix
which can be extracted directly to WAV

(though obviously lose benefit of surround mixes...!!)

Re: [slim] can SB do lossless FLAC 5.1?

2008-05-15 Thread ntom

I've started trying to rip audio from a few DVD-A discs that I have.
Seem to have managed to rip the 24/96 stereo mix OK. Also ripped the
24/96 5.1 mix OK. The stereo mixs streams to my SB3 OK. The 5.1 mix
doesn't -guess no surprise. Just wont play -thought maybe i could pass
SPDIF to a surround amp but even if it had played I guess would have
been no good as not DT or DD.

Is there anything that would allow me to encode the 5.1 WAVs to DTS (at
a sensible costI dont have many DVD-A discs!!)

As a DVD-A it also carries the DVD-V Dolby Digital mix so I guess this
would be the next best option to stream to SB3 feed SPDIF to my
surround amp, although so far I haven't managed to rip this for some
reasonwhere I've had no problem using the documented methods here
on the forum to extract from my normal DVD music videos.

Re: [slim] Displaying comment tag from FLAC files in SqueezeCenter

2008-05-14 Thread ntom

From the now playing screen if you scroll right does it appear when you
scroll through the tags for the track playing?

If not then it must be a tagging problem. It could be that you are
looking at ID3 tag info instead of the FLAC tags (VORBIS tags?). Not
sure how you check this with dbpoweramp (I use MP3TAG you can clear
the ID3 tags using this to be sure you have the correct tags).

Re: [slim] Fast-forward/rewind redesign

2007-12-23 Thread ntom

Tend to agree with an earlier poster: need to be able to hear what you
are skipping for this to be useful. Currently I find that the lack of
responsiveness is the biggest cause of frustration but I like being
able to skip forward or backwards in a track. I agree if this is a
problem on transcoded data then drop the audio for this -but then I
only use FLAC occasionally MP3!

I would like to see current situation where each FFWD press speeds it
up, but would be nice if FRWD stepped the speed back down so could
control speed.doesn't seem to do that now.

Re: [slim] SB Display not auto updating

2007-09-30 Thread ntom

Yes: Having same issue but still on version 81 here.

Only noticed this recently since adding a dozen or so new albums. Also
added a few DTS rips from DVDs. So my database size has now increased
to more than 1 tracks.

Could database have any impact..?

As you say if I leave it 30secs for the music info screen saver to kick
in it reports the correct track. But when I simply skip to next track,
the next track plays OK, but the screen 'sticks' at the first
track

Happening on SB1, SB2 SB3

Re: [slim] Transporter Price

2007-09-06 Thread ntom

I din't kick off this post with the intention of focussing on value,
only to note the apparent price rises in the UK.

As you say taxes have not risen in the last year but the exchange rate
has moved in sterling's favour with respect to US purchases.

having said that, doing a search today, the only UK prices I can
find are back to £1300 so maybe it was a few vendors hoping to make a
quick profit£1300 at least makes it comparable when VAT duty are
considered (to a $2000 US).

As someone else stated in an earlier thread.a £999 price tag would
make it much more attractive in UK. A UK price difference of £1100 on
the SB3 would pay for a pretty good hi-end DAC

Oh wellI guess I should have bought at the beginning when the free
SB3 was thrown in!!

Re: [slim] Wireless IP address

2007-09-06 Thread ntom

Thanks for reply

As the tone of my second post above might imply, I have been pulling my
hair out over this one!

Finally got things working again this eveningquite by chance.

I went back to square one, turning off encryption, turning on SSID etc
all to no avail. Then I happened to be reading an earlier post
regarding what is written on the base of the SB re: SB1 / SB2.

Then..was looking through the info page on my SB2 which won't
connect, and saw the MAC address. Now having just looked at the label
on the base of my SB, I realised it was not the same address. I
changed it hey presto all the problems have gone away.

I have no idea how it changed originally (didn't even know it could be
-thought this was hard coded into a device?).

So posted this info in case anyone has similar symptoms: i.e. SB
appears to simply not connect with the wireless connection. I don't
understnd why the MAC address would prevent a connection anyway -maybe
someone else can explain!!

Note: I am NOT using any fancy security i.e. restricting access through
the router by MAC address

[slim] Transporter Price

2007-08-19 Thread ntom

Has anyone bought a Transporter in the UK? Pricing here seems
ludicrous, with on-line prices anywhere between £1300 £1700 (approx
$3350). That's a Squeezebox plus very expensive DAC...or maybe a
squeezbox in every room.

Why is this with Slim Devices website showing $2000 or a little over
£1000.

[slim] Wireless IP address

2007-08-11 Thread ntom

Have a wireless connection problem. Have a SB2 which was up running
OK on wireless.

Was having a connection problem elsewhere on my network swithched
from static IP to DCHP. Once problem was resolved, I changed back to
static IP.

Now SB won't connect. Tried with cable static IP all OK. When
connect wirelessly no ball. Tried factory reset but basically it never
connects to the specified network.

Am baffled as can't see anything that has changed.

One thing I am unsure of: when I connect with cable I can specify an IP
address. When I connect by wireless (even after factory reset) I get no
option to enter IP addresshow do I get this option to appear
again...?

All help appreciated!

[slim] Re: 6.3.0: Many Duplicate Albums Listed (as well as duped New Music, Album Art, etc)

2006-07-03 Thread ntom

As one who looks in from time to time it's interesting to see the
responses to the 6.3 release

I upgraded some time back, encountered the compilation issue, read a
few threads on it concluded I needed to tag compilations as such
-took no time with mp3 tag about 700 albums all told.

My point is that as far as I was concerned it was no big deal I've
got used to having to tinker with settings etc. I've got used to
getting p'ed off with my belkin router occasionally failing to
recognise the wireless connection

This is a product that requires some level of technical understanding
a little patience and technical nurturing, but rewards with outstanding
sound quality and outstanding vfm.

The nature of open source is great with sometimes unpredictable
functionality + rapid response to issues. Downsides ...poor
documentation not much packaging of new releases.

Sure that more time explaining what's in a new release the possible
impact on existing library would mean people making a more informed
decision as to whether to upgrade or not.

Of course if you are like me, you'd upgrade anyway, curse for a few
day's while you get it all working how you want it again, then settle
back to enjoy until the next time.!!

[slim] Ethernet cable length problem...???

2006-06-13 Thread ntom

Can anyone suggest where my problem may liei'm left scratching my
head at the moment!!

I have been using SB3 for some time using wireless all is fine.

Last weekend I thought i'd try out a cable connection for the heck of
it to see if it sounds any different

Installed cable -it is routed all around loft down an outside wall
-prob about 45 metres of cable ( took a few hours to install).
Connect up nothing!

The connection LED on my modem does not come on. So I rewired the
connections same problem. I've tried a continuity test on pins
1,2,3 6 which I believe are the relevant pins it checks out!

Plug in my RIO Karma FLAC player it's fine, both ethernet lamps
come so cable should be OK.

Prob with SB3 maybe? No! Ive plugged SB3 into my hub using a 1m
ethernet cable it's fine.

What could be wrong the longer cable connects to a RIO Ok its
seen on the network. Use the SB3 nothing.

Q: Is the SB3 ethernet connection not happy with low signal levels
-whats the longest cable connection out there that works OK?? Could it
be that the ethernet cable comes through the wall amongst a bit of a
spaghetti of hifi cable connections -i've done my best to
re-arrange, but no joy. Tried alternate router connections no
joy
Thought ethernet could take 100m??

Anyone able to make any suggestions??

i've had the same thing happen several times since upgrading to 6.2.2.

I havent (yet?) noticed a problem any time music has been
playing..

I was one who had the stuttering problems before with the later FW
versions under 6.2.1 -I forget now which FW version I fell back to with
6.2.1 that was stable

I will tread carefully for a while with 6.2.2

[slim] File Sharing probs

2006-01-04 Thread ntom

Finally up running with SB3 + Belkin wifi routersound great.

Few teething probs though...

File sharing: have old recently upgraded PIII in attic with XP
cannot find the 'use simple file sraing option' -it is not in the
folder options view menu? Why would thid be the case?

On my main m/c also XP, where I have music files in My Music there is
no sharing tab when I look at the folder properties despite simple file
sharing being enabled. I can however turn sharing on if I navigate to
the same folder via the root drive letter...! Why?

Any help appreciated!

Thx, Neale
