Re: [slim] Announcement Squeezecenter 7.2

2008-09-09 Thread shabbs

I've recently upgraded to SC v7.2. The upgrade went fine and I
re-scanned etc... without issues. But I have noticed an odd behaviour
just recently. When using the web interface (with Fishbone skin), when
playing tracks back from a playlist, the displayed Artist info is not
always updated properly (it would still show as the previous artist)
when moving to the next song and the Album info would be updated
correctly but clicking on the link would actually take me to the
previously played album listing. A reload of the web page sets
everything properly.

On top of all this, this behaviour seems to come and go - ie: not 100%
repeatable. I'll have to see if does the same thing with the stock
skin. I've cleared my cache etc... to see if that fixes it but it does
not.

Has anyone else observed this? Very strange.

Re: [slim] What Anti-Virus software do you use

2008-09-07 Thread shabbs

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=49644

Question: Which Anti-Virus do you use

- Avast
- AVG (free 8.0)
- Avira
- CA E-Trust
- ESET (NOD32)
- Kaspersky
- F-Secure
- McAfee (any version)
- Norton (any version)
- Other or None (please post a response)

I use Avast as my AV of choice. I also use COMODO Firewall which has a
DEFENSE+ component that provides on-access, real-time protection
which can affect scans for SC.

[slim] Anyone else do this?

2008-07-25 Thread shabbs

Just wondering if I'm the only one... after I load a new version of
SS/SC I update the logo to resort back to the way it was with the
original Slim Devices logo and not the Logitech logo. Heh heh.
Nostalgia I guess... ;)

Re: [slim] SqueezeCenter won't populate album art

2008-06-18 Thread shabbs

Ugh. I had this very same issue. I use AVGFree which does not let you
specify an exclusion list (the for-pay edition does), nor does it seem
to have a quick and easy way to unload the resident real-time scanner.
I ended up having to uninstall AVG and move to ClamWin as my AV
solution in order to get the scan going properly. ClamWin does not have
an on-access real-time scan engine like AVG does, so we'll see if I
stick with this solution.

Interesting day...

No problem.

From your screen shots, it looks like you are still scanning the library
when you see this behaviour. My experience is that the album thumbnails
are the last thing to be built by the scan and only appear at the very
end. Do you still see this behaviour after the scan has finished?

[slim] Re: Introducing..... me!

2007-01-07 Thread shabbs

Joe Blow - heh heh - up here in Canada, we call him Joe SixPack. My
reply below is more towards Jim's question of WHY do they realize it's
great? Do you have a particularly cool way of demoing the features?.

I have been an SD customer since the SB1 came out. I remember when the
SliMP3 came out but I was just beginning to understand digital music at
that time and did not realize what it really represented. When the SB1
came out, I picked it up and was hooked. I have since bought an SB3 as
well and will most certainly purchase more products from SD as they
continue to grow.

Every time we have guests over to our house, they see the SB3 in our
living room, notice that it's showing info about the music that is
currently playing and start to ask questions about it. When I begin to
explain the setup (mp3s, home network, home stereo, slim server etc...)
one of two things happen: they get the concept and are interested, or
they gloss over and don't understand. When I see people glossing over,
I usually bring them back to reality with a quick summary, show how the
remote can access the music wicked fast (even letting them try it) and
then get them a drink as they listen to the music. For the ones that
get it, they usually want more details on how it all works, how much
does it cost and where they can get one. After that, their reaction is
usually Man, that sounds like too much work. or Damn that's
expensive. or I'll be getting one of those real soon. To date, I've
only had one buddy actually buy one after seeing mine, the rest I'm
still working on.

The oohs and aahs usually come from the following:
- How quickly I can access all my music using the remote (search,
genre, playlists etc...)
- The look of the browser interface with album art etc... that can
control my Squeezeboxen
- The sound. That's an MP3 we're hearing? Wow it sounds just like the
CD (neither myself, my equipment or my friends are Audiophile-quality
btw)
- The plug-ins (Hey, it says the Giants are up 28-0 over Philly in
the 3rd! Cool!
- Synching the SB1 in my basement with the SB3 upstairs
- Internet radio integration (everyone has heard of Shoutcast)

The other oohs and aahs are for the Harmony 880 remote which controls
my whole entertainment system.

I find everyone loves the sound and look of the SB3, but don't want to
spend the time/effort to set it up and get it done right. The iPod
crowd gets it, but would rather just plug their iPod in to their
stereo. The non techie crowd just wants something they can plug in
and work right away and not need a dedicated server to run the show.
The techie crowd understands right off the bat but the decision then
comes down to cost/effort.

I'm always showing it off when we have guests over that are interested
and I will continue to do so because I feel it is the best product out
there for streaming digital music.

My $0.02.

Cheers.

the first two logical steps. If those are not working, they're pretty

snarlydwarf;150067 Wrote:
Hrrm? Sure they can. Who says RIAA labels are the only labels?
I think they are the only labels that can get you significant radio
play. More play, more popularity... and that translates to more CD
sales... and more profit for the RIAA. I don't really understand how it
all works and I'm sure most of the bands don't either, but it does seem
like the RIAA has the upper hand across the board as far as profits go.
I think the only place bands makes any significant money is on tour
selling merchandise.

I'm not sure how it works with artists that create their own labels
like Prince did with Paisley Park Records. The digital age has
certainly made it easier to produce your own stuff but I think the RIAA
still controls distribution.

Cheers.

An interesting read about how much money a band really makes when they

Ummm... I'm running Sofsqueeze v3.2.1 and I simply double click on the
softsqueezeheadless.exe executable. Works fine with my SS 6.5.1.

My PC can play FLAC, OGG, WAV etc... will it play those? The devil is

As for the acquisition, I think this will be a good thing in the end as

kweller;145493 Wrote:
My MP3s are correctly tagged - the artist field contains the name of the
artist. The album artist field contains 'Various Artists' for
compilations and the name of the recording artist for the rest.
I was under the impression that the Album Artist tag should ONLY be
used for compilations that have various artists and that it should be
populated with the value Various Artists for all the tracks on that
album (or whatever value you want, it just has to be the same value for
each track). For albums by a single artist, the Album Artist tag
should be blank and the artist should only be listed in the Artist
tag.

Is that not the correct use of the Album Artist tag? What does SS do
with the Album Artist tag?

[slim] Re: Looking for Good Info on Album Art Downloading

2006-10-10 Thread shabbs

Here's my Album Artwork setup if it helps:
- Each album is in a seperate folder in my overall heirachy
- I create two artwork files in each folder:
-- folder.jpg (200x200 pixels)
-- albumartsmall.jpg (75x75 pixels)
- I embed the folder.jpg image as Album Art inside each MP3 using
TagRename.

SS then uses the folder.jpg image as the large image when looking at
the album info in the SS web interface. It uses albumartsmall.jpg as
the thumbnail image when browsing the albums gallery. I think the
embedded image is displayed in the now playing info in the web
interface as the track is played.

I manually downloaded all my album artwork from web sites like
amazon.com/music, allmusic.com, allofmp3.com and search on
images.google.com when I can't find it on a music site.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.

[slim] Re: V6.5 huge FileCache

2006-10-03 Thread shabbs

Out of curiosity, I checked my FileCache and it was pretty large. I ran
the cachedump script and it produced an output that contained nearly
500 lines that referenced fitstretch-100-100-0 on each line. Is this
for the resizing of the Album Art? Here are my details:

Library: 722 albums with 9653 songs by 1233 artists.
Library size: 67.2GB, all MP3 files, cover art for everything.

SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Perl Version: 5.8.7 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt
No additional plugins installed.

FileCache folder size: 162MB, 18,253 files, 4,340 folders

Is that reasonable to expect?

EDIT: My cover art is structured as such: Each album is in it's own
folder. Each folder contains two image files: Folder.jpg - 200x200 and
AlbumArtSmall.jpg - 75x75.

Cheers.

What sizes are your Album Art files? I use two files for each of my
albums. The large cover art image is called folder.jpg and it's 200x200
(this file is also embedded in each track). For the album thumbnails, I
have a file called albumartsmall.jpg that is 75x75. Both seem to be
used fine for my library.

The home link is dynamic for the fishbone skin. It changes depending

My scan takes about 2 hours as well and I have all my music on an NSLU2
as well. That's scanning 9076 tracks. I schedule my scans to run in the
wee hours so I'm not affected by it. If I really need to access new
music right away, I'll just force a read by browsing the music folder.

[slim] Re: OT: HDTV advice?

2006-08-22 Thread shabbs

There are a few different technologies out there: LCD, Plasma, Rear
Projection LCD, DLP and LCOS. They each have their own strenghts and
weaknesses in various areas (screen door effect of RPLCD if you are too
close, rainbow effects of DLPs etc...). You need to find the one that
fits you best and fits your budget.

It's also good to understand HDTV and the different types: 720p, 1080i,
1080p etc... This is an old article but is still a good read.

http://www.projectorcentral.com/hdtv_edtv.htm

Some other good links here:

Buying an HDTV: http://www.digitalhome.ca/content/view/1364/98/

Choosing the right size of HDTV:

You also need to be aware of the native resolution of the TV you are
buying. To display 1080i content natively, your TV will need 1080 lines
of resolution. A lot of sales guys will talk about TRUE HD - just be
careful you know the specs of the products your looking at and
understand the limitations. A TV with 720 lines of native resolution
will always down-convert a 1080i signal to fit in its 720 lines.

Also - find out how much HD programming you can really access. A lot of
people assume the HD channels are showing HD all the time. That's not
really the case. Most channels only have a few hours a week of new HD
content and the rest is SD. But it is growing.

Cheers.

Nice comparison chart here on Logitech's site:

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/comparison/US/EN,crid=2080,sh=1,chart=0,contentid=8789

I use the 880 and totally love it. The biggest difference for the 880
is the colour screen and 8 activity buttons that you can assign. With
the 880 you can assign any activity to the 8 buttons. With the others,
3 are pre-assigned and 3 are customizable.

Cheers.

[slim] Re: The remote is crap!

2006-08-01 Thread shabbs

I've still got my original SB1 remote and it's neither damaged nor worn
and has seen consistent use. It has survived a move too. I too was of
the impression that the remote was flimsy and looked cheap, but at the
end of the day, it gets the job done just fine. I'd rather SD keep the
cost of the SB low by supplying a minimal remote and focusing efforts
on the SB internals. Also, the SB can be easily controlled via a
Universal remote. I now have a Harmony 880 that I use to control my SB
and barely touch the original remote, unless it's closer to me than the
Harmony. ;) Heh heh.

Cheers.

I agree. This device looks great and it sounds like it will address the
audiophile's needs out there with what they've put in the box. It's
beyond my price point but it sounds about right for the audiophile
niche market. Kudos to Slim Devices for listening to their fans and
delivering. Good luck with this product - we'll all be watching

Is there anything out there that would compete with this product?

Cheers.

[slim] Re: Poll: What is your library size and hardware

2006-07-19 Thread shabbs

I'll jump in and play too.

Library: 782 albums with 8,609 songs by 539 artists.
File Server: Linksys NSLU2 with a WD 250GB USB drive
SlimServer Version: 6.5b1 - 8255 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252
SlimServer Hardware: Intel PD Dual Core - 940 3.2GHz with 2GB RAM (my
primary desktop)

All of my music files are VBR MP3s. They have been ripped using EAC in
Secure mode from original source and then compressed to MP3s using
LAME. The version of LAME has changed over the years. Most of my files
were done with LAME v3.90.3 using the --alt-preset extreme setting. Now
I'm using LAME v3.97b2 with the -V 0 setting.

I should have started out ripping to FLAC and MP3 simultaneously for
long term storage and future-proofing, but I was not thinking that far
ahead back then.

Cheers.

[slim] Re: SlimServer shuts of on rescanning

2006-07-14 Thread shabbs

When I issue a full scan, the SB display initially shows Slimserver is
now rescanning your library... and then the display usually goes off
and the web interface is pretty much unusable until the scan is done
(approx 2 hours for my collection). This has always been the case for
me throughout the years with different builds and different hardware.
So, now I schedule my scans to run at night in the wee hours.

[slim] Me and my squeezebox

2006-07-13 Thread shabbs

I thought I'd put together a post about why I love my Squeezebox to help
lighten things up here. Seems to be some frustration on the board
recently and I wanted to spread the love.

I bought my SB1 when they first came out. I've been ripping MP3s since
the early 90s but never really got into it heavily until I got my SB1.
I remember when SD announced the SliMP3 player and I said to myself -
now that is sweet. I can't remember why I did not buy one at the time.
I was young and had tons of disposable cash - the reason really escapes
me. When they announced the first Squeezebox I was sold and was all in
right away. My MP3 collection had grown considerably by then and I had
discovered the wonders of EAC's Secure Rip and the LAME MP3
alt-presets. I was on my way to endless music heaven with a smile from
ear to ear.

Now, the SB1 is not as pretty or sexy as the SB3 is today, but that's
fine with me. It does one thing and it does it amazingly well. It has
been rock solid since the day I bought it and everyone I've shown it to
has been wicked impressed at the ease with which you can access all your
music as well as Internet radio and what not. The web interface and
Softqueeze player make it accessible from anywhere. When we have
parties, it's running an appropriate mix in the background all the
time, setting the mood just right. I plan on having this sucker around
cranking out tunes for a long long time.

Not only does it work well, but it sounds awesome. I am still impressed
to this day with the sound quality from all the outputs. I used to run
the Digital Optical SPDIF out to my receiver for optimum sound. When I
needed that optical input on my receiver for my HD cable box, I
switched the SB1 over to use RCA connectors on a different input. I was
thinking I'd take a hit on sound quality, but hell, it was just as good.
Now, my system is not super high-end nor am I an audiophile, but I could
not tell if there was a difference. And with the control integrated into
my Harmony 880 remote, I'm all set for ease of use.

I totally love my Squeezebox v1 and will be a SlimDevices fan for life
because of the experiences I have had with it so far and continue to
have. MAD props to all the employees, developers and volunteers that
have made the Squeezebox and SlimServer such amazing products over the
years and for years to come. There really is nothing else out there
like it for the price and flexibility. Not even close. A true Open
Source success story. How many other companies are out there where the
developers, CEO, CTO etc... are regularly on the discussion boards
answering questions, helping users out and taking input? I can't even
think of another.

Well done SlimDevices... well done indeed.

Cheers.
