Since the iPod/iPhone is discussed here, someone might know what the difference between the cheapest iPod and the two more expensive ones is, beside the price and storage space, of course. The Apple website says that the latter ones are faster, do they have a faster clocked processor? Does the cheapest iPod miss other things? I might get an iPod Touch too, since the Controller is a hassle to use for browsing and searching the library, and an overhaul of the UI for it is much unlikely. signorRossi. -- signor_rossi signor_rossi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11941 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67717 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Of course also only speculation... Re: [slim] Help & advice needed to connect up receivers and Booms
1. No, SBen need either a PC or a NAS powerful enough to run Squeezecenter or a connection to Squeezenetwork. You might consider to connect the router and your Mac over a powerline adapter if connecting the router to the Mac is not viable via ethernet, but try to sort out if and where you really have bandwith problems first. For any additional receiver you deploy you might consider to go wired whereever possible, as an all wireless setup may not be possible at all in that case. 2. Assuming you want to deploy bookshelf-size speakers you probably get a better bang for the buck with powered speakers. -- signor_rossi signor_rossi's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11941 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=63907 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

If a screen of 4" is big enough for you the cheapest way is to just get an used Nokia770, run Squeezeplay on the server and present its interface via VNC or RDP on the Nokia770. Worked surprisingly good for me (I will probably switch to a FreeNAS/SlimNAS box soon as server, so I won't use it anymore). Or get a Siemens Simpad, it has a larger screen (if they are still around, I bricked mine, g). Small touch screens are relatively expensive and you still need an extra computer to drive them. An old thin client would probably be enough for that, but such a setup is somewhat clunky. The Gigabyte will be relatively expensive and there is no EEE Netbook with touchscreen in the works, you would have to do it yourself as a mod. Yeah, but how long is the battery life of your mobile while using hsdpa to pull down data and at the same time acting as a wifi access point? Just to be 100% sure, would I really get a replacement unit under warranty for an SB that has been damaged by lightning? That would be really great since I wouldn't have to go through all the formalities with the insurance (guy coming to look at SB, I have to 50 damage participation anyway and the modem will probably get replaced by the telecom company who owns it). [slim] Lightning killed ethernet port of my 1 year old SB3.....
and the modem too (but not the switch between the two, strange). :( Connected though wireless the SB still works, only the ethernet port is dead, tried already factory reset, etc. I have used the SB3 only wired so far and have bad wireless reception where I used it. Since I have an insurance against lightning strikes would someone please be so kind and tell me to whom I have to write an email to to get info if this can be repaired or not and how much it would eventually cost? I have bought the SB last year through the European Logitech online shop, but I found it hard to get directions from their website who to address with this... I did try Squeezeplay over VNC and also used xmodmap to map the N770 hardware keys accordingly, but at this time Squeezeplay still lacks mouse support, so browsing is quite tedious and text input is even more. Depending how the SP developer chooses to do text input in newer versions this may improve dramatically, though. The screen shots on the wiki for the new SP UI look quite good already. Besides the buffer lag the N770 has an headphone out that produces to much static to be enjoyable. I thought to try out a Vmware image for N770 development to get an idea about the tasks that would be necessary, but didn't come far since I couldn't get to work it properly on my Ubuntu box (some vmware module problem). Re: [slim] Newbie said " I dont Get it... is JIve..."
I haven't had a controller in my own hands so far (only tried the desktop software version from svn), but the essence of it is that it is very responsive in comparison to a browser driven interface and that it is really portable per se (are the buttons backlit?). A Nokia770 or iPhone are portable too, but not as responsive and IMHO can't beat the Controller with their touch screens because task dedicated hardware buttons (not too much of them, of course) are better usability wise than those said touch screens.
