The Logitech spare parts shop still has replacement PSUs, but you pay
minimum 29,20 £ too (power supply and shipping without power plug

Which one if I might ask?

I am always curious to know which low-power boards are around, some
affordable low-spec boards can be bought but boards with a little better
specs get expensive very fast (too expensive for me to just play around
with them and then let them lay around unused like it happened to me
already with some used thin clients).

You could always go the plug-computer route as a drop-in to replace
msb.com should the need arise, it is a diy solution and needs time to
setup and administer of course, but power consumption is low.

Logitech surely should have sneaked in SBS in their Revue or should do
so with the next Google-TV device (if Logitech is the one doing it, I
read online that an ARM based cheaper one is coming, dunno if the
processor would be powerful enough), maybe they could disguise it as a

I was too eager with my previous post, sorry. The whole thing is
actually an iPod dock that for some reason allows the playback from a
pre-3G iPhone, it even says something about the product not being
compatible with the iPhone when it is placed in the dock. Since it
'worked' otherwise I didn't bother to mention it before. Anyway, seems
this JBL dock is not shielded properly for WiFi, but it sounds crap
with an old iPod too, you can even hear the hard disk spinning at low
volumes through the speakers.
Sorry again for the trouble.

You can fill quite large room with this combination (i had A5s in use
for my mom but she now got a Boom because it is easier to operate with
its hardware buttons and her room is quite small) and if he sits only a
few feet away with no possibility to place the A5s at least 1,5 meters
away from each other this is certainly overkill and way more expensive.
The boom is compact and portable and he can use it without much hassle
in other rooms of his house if he got a WiFi access point.

I would guess the current Squeezeplay version can be found here:
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.5
Windows installers and Deb packages are present, so there isn't
actually any need for WebUI installation. They could provide a link to
SP on the SBS download page and emphasize that you can somewhat test the
Radio and Touch interfaces with it, but then again SP doesn't always
work reliably and that would be counterproductive then. Unfortunately it
seems that there isn't enough manpower to polish the SP desktop version
properly.

This might interest those from Italy here on the forums that already are
'Telecom Italia' private customers. I myself am not (darn) and have only

Will we get super fast and cheap downloads from satellite within 1

No. It does play Blue Rays ripped to the hard drive, though.

Btw, the (streaming) media player capabilities of Blue Ray players like
the BD-P3600 or the LG-390 seem still to fall far behind the
capabilities of dedicated devices like the Xtreamer, O!Play or WD TV

But if the Touch comes with the big remote, there is a slight chance

remote is included with the Touch? EDIT: Following the pictures on

Can confirm that, though it seems that the site is more responsive
since yesterday (nearly unusable on Firefox the days before). If I
decide to go for a SBRadio I would also like to order a spare battery

Since the iPod/iPhone is discussed here, someone might know what the
difference between the cheapest iPod and the two more expensive ones is,
beside the price and storage space, of course. The Apple website says
that the latter ones are faster, do they have a faster clocked
processor? Does the cheapest iPod miss other things? I might get an iPod

searching the library, and an overhaul of the UI for it is much
unlikely.

Of course also only speculation...
After looking again at the picture I don't think this is a
Controller/Receiver combination, and IMO that wouldn't be that important
if in exchange this device would include a SC server that allows to
simply plug in an external hard drive with music, scan it and have fun
with a local library. That would make it terrific. As an extended remote
there are still the Controller and iPeng as an option.

Re: [slim] Help & advice needed to connect up receivers and Booms

2009-05-30 Thread signor_rossi

1. No, SBen need either a PC or a NAS powerful enough to run
Squeezecenter or a connection to Squeezenetwork.
You might consider to connect the router and your Mac over a powerline
adapter if connecting the router to the Mac is not viable via ethernet,
but try to sort out if and where you really have bandwith problems
first. For any additional receiver you deploy you might consider to go
wired whereever possible, as an all wireless setup may not be possible
at all in that case.
2. Assuming you want to deploy bookshelf-size speakers you probably get
a better bang for the buck with powered speakers.

What if this big stationary touch screen controller includes an ARM
based fanless server that can run SC? Of course it then would have to
include either wireless N in the case that the music would be stored on
a NAS or it would have to include an USB or eSATA port for external hard

You are right that 'mac' is the executable, but it isn't readily
available in Linux distros due to licence reasons. Better use mplayer
anyway, here is what I have in my custom-convert.conf to transcode ape
to wav:

Code:

  ape wav * *
  # F
  [mplayer] -novideo -ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=/dev/fd/4 $FILE$ 4>&1 1>/dev/null

Don't know if this still works and how I would have to modify it to
offer transcoding to flac or mp3 since I have transcoded all I had in
ape to flac a whle ago. Since ape is lossless you won't suffer quality
loss if you do the same.

Re: [slim] Any plans on official magnatune support?

2009-03-26 Thread signor_rossi

@Moonbase
There is already a squeezecenter plugin that makes free preview
listening from Magnatune possible.
http://magnaslim.sourceforge.net/
If you use 7.4 you have to adjust the maxVersion in install.xml and
copy it manually to the SC Plugin folder and it will work there too,
for previous versions you install it easily via the repository url.
As for clues how to implement advanced features, Amarok2 is open source
and could provide valuable help, and the Magantune website has also some
information on services integration (info link on their homepage).
I signed up for a 3 month (3 and 12 months and lifetime? is possible)
download membership yesterday and I think I certainly will find enough
music I like in these 3 months to justify the money I paid. They aren't
evil at all it seems... ;) They have over 600 albums atm.

for 280€ new, and it seems that the Booms have arrived in bigger
numbers now, I will probably get one when I see a good offer (I am
thinking of UK prices here).
But I also must say that SB products being relatively cheap in Italy is
an exception, computer stuff for example is ordinarily 10-20% more
expensive than in Germany.

Building such a machine isn't the problem, it's the revenue outlook
from it and the support effort that it may need. Hopefully the
preconditions will change favourably soon (or already have?).
This is only a wild speculation from my side, though.

In theory they should already have the knowledge to make a little
computer running Squeezecenter with a small touch screen included you
can attach USB or network drives to, a Controller evolution.

Re: [slim] German Resellers? Delivery problems? (Logitech has no SB3 in German online store)

It doesn't show up in the Italian online shop either...
But geizhals.at/eu shows some suppliers that can deliver immediately
and quite a few note that they should get new stock today.
IMO it makes no sense to replace the Classic which can now be bought
starting at 200€, it makes a good entry price (150€ would be even
better ;) ) to get people into the Logitech product line of networked
audio players. A new more expensive replacement wouldn't nurture that
effect.

I guess you are right, I made similar assumptions when thinking about
it and the only reasonable upgrade that I can think of would be a
better readable display in brighter light conditions, they could stick
it in the Controller without other changes.
Anyway, the cost for such an upgraded Controller certainly would start
again at 400€ in Europe, which is to expensive for me atm. Let's
see how business is in the next few weeks and I will decide if I can
afford a Duet.

If you don't need this box as desktop and only as Squeezecenter box and
perhaps as fileserver you might try FreeNAS + SlimNAS, probably the
lightest setup possible. Ubuntu might already be much slower. I am
using it on a VIA 800MHz box atm and performance is o.k., but I am
still testing with a subset of my music only (100 songs), as I haven't
a bigger drive yet. I still have to decide if I will use this box,
though (waiting for watt-o-meter).

Re: [slim] Touchscreen integration?

2008-08-16 Thread signor_rossi

If a screen of 4" is big enough for you the cheapest way is to just get
an used Nokia770, run Squeezeplay on the server and present its
interface via VNC or RDP on the Nokia770. Worked surprisingly good for
me (I will probably switch to a FreeNAS/SlimNAS box soon as server, so
I won't use it anymore). Or get a Siemens Simpad, it has a larger
screen (if they are still around, I bricked mine, g).
Small touch screens are relatively expensive and you still need an
extra computer to drive them. An old thin client would probably be
enough for that, but such a setup is somewhat clunky.
The Gigabyte will be relatively expensive and there is no EEE Netbook
with touchscreen in the works, you would have to do it yourself as a
mod.

Yeah, but how long is the battery life of your mobile while using hsdpa

Just to be 100% sure, would I really get a replacement unit under
warranty for an SB that has been damaged by lightning?
That would be really great since I wouldn't have to go through all the
formalities with the insurance (guy coming to look at SB, I have to 50€

the telecom company who owns it).

I did something similar prior to my SB3 purchase, I used VNC and Amarok
and a long audio cable ;) , but since Moose is Windows only
unfortunately I can't use it with my Ubuntu server box.
I did try Squeezeplay over VNC and also used xmodmap to map the N770
hardware keys accordingly, but at this time Squeezeplay still lacks
mouse support, so browsing is quite tedious and text input is even
more. Depending how the SP developer chooses to do text input in newer
versions this may improve dramatically, though.
The screen shots on the wiki for the new SP UI look quite good
already.

Exactly what I was asking for. Besides the buffer lag the N770 has an
headphone out that produces to much static to be enjoyable. I thought
to try out a Vmware image for N770 development to get an idea about the
tasks that would be necessary, but didn't come far since I couldn't get
to work it properly on my Ubuntu box (some vmware module problem).
Maybe I will try the image again under Xp some time.

Bye, signor_rossi.

Re: [slim] Newbie said " I dont Get it... is JIve..."

2008-03-18 Thread signor_rossi

I haven't had a controller in my own hands so far (only tried the
desktop software version from svn), but the essence of it is that it is
very responsive in comparison to a browser driven interface and that it
is really portable per se (are the buttons backlit?). A Nokia770 or
iPhone are portable too, but not as responsive and IMHO can't beat the
Controller with their touch screens because task dedicated hardware
buttons (not too much of them, of course) are better usability wise
than those said touch screens.
Bye, signor_rossi.

Re: [slim] Duet Controller or Nokia N770?

2008-03-17 Thread signor_rossi

Just out of interest (and also because my budget for audio products is
still depleted after I bought a new amplifier, new speakers for me and
my mom, the SB3, an external DAC and also quite some music last year):
Does someone have the knowledge to estimate how much effort it would be
to port Squeezeplay to the N770 or N8x0s, if this is possible at all?

Thanks, signor_rossi.
