I think there was a recent thread about it. Would you believe the

If you don't unplug pCP or your DAC I don't understand why you need
usbconnectd. I thought it was only needed to restart Squeezelite when an

1. Install the usb-power extension and uhubctl if necessary.
2. Edit the udev rule to contain the correct Id for your DAC
3. Add the two uhubctl commands in pCP user commands.

Reboot. I think that should do it.

If you have a spare SD card use that.

The gotcha for me with that udev rule was that the rule didn't work
after a restart unless the usb was removed and reinserted. That is why I
needed to add the two uhubctl commands to user commands at start up. A
lot of the thread on GitHub is taken up with me spending a lot of time
thinking the udev rule wasn't working until I finally realised what was
going on. On Raspbian the udev rule works without any messing around at
start up so I thought pCP would behave in the same way.

control the power to the USB port. If it isn't in the repository it
might have been overlooked when pCP was updated to the latest version.

Those commands only toggle the usb port off and on at start up to make
sure the udev rule takes effect. So you still need the udev rule but I
have a feeling
usb-power.tcz
might have been added to the pCP repository so check there first. You
will need to edit the udev rule to change the idProduct to that of your
DAC (obtained from lsusb) assuming idVendor remains the same.

I think lsusb from a command prompt tells you which ports devices are
on. My commands work on a Pi3B, other Pis could be different. Strangely
I didn't need those commands on Raspbian, only for pCP

For my E30 I used my udev rule on both pCP and Raspbian. They both
worked but in a different way. On pCP the DAC would go into standby
after playback stopped, while the Raspbian only entered standby when I
clicked the player power button in LMS. Probably some setting pCP I
suppose. Incidentally a coax connected Touch also doesn't allow an E30
to go into standby.
The power saving in Standby is miniscule anyway (0.1W on mine) so apart
from being annoying to see the orange display is it worth using standby?

you don't even need many SD cards. Once you find a reliable method to
backup and restore you can reuse them. I've had Macrium Reflect (free)
installed on my laptop for years and very rarely used it for anything. I
tried using it to backup my Pi SD card and it worked perfectly and only
backed up the used sectors meaning it can be easily restored to a
smaller SD card if necessary.

[slim] Major differences between output/input waveforms in Audacity

2022-12-03 Thread slartibartfast

I posted this in another thread (where it will probably get ignored
[emoji3]) but does anyone have any idea why a loopback recording made in
Audacity is so obviously different to the waveform of the original audio
file?
https://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=1067023
I played the file in Squeezelite-X, Squeezeplay and Foobar 2000 with the
same results. The waveform is clearly a different shape. I am (not for
the first time) confused.

Squeezeboxes. I still have mine on a side table ready for use. At the
time it seemed like I was always having to reset both the controller and
the receiver because the receiver had lost contact with the server for
some reason. Those were the days when I was using a Windows PC and Wake
On Lan and probably hadn't reserved an IP address for the server on the
router so I might have better luck now with a Pi server. I should
retrieve the receiver from the loft and try it again sometime.

[slim] Forum Search issue

2022-11-07 Thread slartibartfast

from my profile. I can't go back that far. There seems to be a limit of
500 on the number of posts you can see. Has it always been like that?

[slim] MB Vs MiB

2022-03-07 Thread slartibartfast

While looking at memory usage in top and htop I couldn't figure out why
they showed different numbers. It turns out top uses MiB (Mebibytes) and
htop uses MB (Megabytes).
I was totally ignorant of Mebibytes and they seem to be exactly what I
thought a Megabyte used to be before drive manufacturers decided to
redefine a Megabyte as 1000 kB ( and presumably a kB as 1000 bytes) so
their drives appeared to be bigger [emoji2].

I just tried setting a reserved IP address outside the Address Pool on
my router and I can, I shouldn't believe what I read on the internet
[emoji2]. Although the DHCP will never allocate a reserved IP address to
another device even if the reserved address is inside the DHCP Address

No it isn't a Tidal issue just the sad truth that the only versions
available on any streaming service tend to be the latest ones. It is
hard to tell if this version is a remix or a remaster but either way,
changing the overall volume of a track halfway through seems a very odd
decision to make. The only Genesis albums available seem to be the
latest remixes and they get widely criticized as well.

I ripped my original UK LP using Audacity and recorded the first track
"Jerusalem" from Tidal to compare the waveforms. On the LP the opening
of the song is very close to the same volume as the end of the song. On
the remaster from Tidal the end of the song is over 7 dBs louder than
the beginning! You need to dive for the volume control halfway through
