Re: [slim] Which music provider for LMS ?
castalla wrote: > Don't use it myself. See here: > > http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?105800-Announce-Google-Music-plugin=895357=1#post895357 It is actually not a raspberry / max2play exclusive but "just" an LMS plugin, which only works on a Linux server as far as I know due to Python issues, but there are nearly no limits as it works on x86(-64) systems as well as on ARM based systems. Of course, max2play eases the installation with the integrated Plugin installer. The first post in the above linked thread contains a link to the github page of the Plugin where you can also find general installation instructions. Regarding the usability: - Basically it works great. - I don't use it all the time because my main source of music is the locally stored stuff, but when I need it, it just works. - BUT: you have to be aware that it can be tricky/limited because it is based on an unofficial API to Google Play Music. Means that if Google change their mind on something it might break immediately (which, on the other hand, is what happened to Spotify, too, as far as I can judge. Of course, Michael Herger jumped in and wrote the Spotty re-implementation). There was a serious issue some time ago that broke things but askvictor took over from the original (then inactive) plugin author and fixed it for the moment. - Regarding features: Searching and "favourites" (saved playlists and radio stations) work fine, you can also access your own uploaded music. I don't use all of GPM's features, so I am not sure what are the limitations, might be that you can't search for radio stations but can just access stuff that you have already played/used via other access methods (mobile device, GPM website, ...). But here you have to check the Thread linked above and/or the "Issues" page of the github maybe to get into more details. - I am not sure about the family account thing: we also use a family account in GPM, but for the LMS Plugin you can only input one user's account data, so I pretty sure that some of the multi-user features won't work or not as smooth as in GPM itself. Short summary: basically works fine, most but not all features are supported, can unfortunately break at any time. Cheers, Seb "The only word I know is 'Grunt' - and I can't spell it" (R.I.P. Re: [slim] Android controller apps
I'd like to weigh in for Squeeze Control. In my opinion Orange Squeeze and Squeeze Control are the two go-for-options. Both of them are under active development and the current state is close to perfect for both, I think any minor quirks are more a matter of personal taste than real UI or App design issues. My personal experience is that both are very responsive and supportive towards bugs/enhancements. I have switched forth and back between the two and currently I have stuck with Squeeze Control. But as stated above, it is more a matter of personal taste than of real issues with one or the other. Two minor pro arguments for Squeeze Control could be that is has a dedicated tablet mode (although it is a 1$ in-app purchase) and that the developer has started to add support for Chromecast as a What's playing-display ;-) Cheers, Seb The only word I know is 'Grunt' - and I can't spell it (R.I.P. So that a user could use the default Google Music App (or Spotify app once they support Chromecast) and choose to cast it to the Squeezebox Server. When you start Google Play Music out of this App it will provide you a button to Cast the Play Music stream to any UPNP/DLNA renderer in your network. As LMS contains (limited/tricky) such functionality since quite some time, all your Squeezeboxes will show up as possible targets for your Cast. [slim] All hail the Squeezebox (Classic, at least)...
I am aware that this is not new/ground-breaking information. But as said before I believe it is necessary from time to time to highlight the positive stuff as well! I am so enthusiastic from what I experienced last night that I just have to share it ;-) 1. I got my first SB3 end of 2005 and I am loving it since the first day! 2. Last week I got my second SB3 (or Classic) and in contrast to some of the negative experiences that are spread around here from time to time setup (including power, LAN and audio connectivity) was done in under 3 minutes! 3. Last night, we had our first party with multi-room Squeezebox music supply. I cannot put the proper words on how great this worked: - Playlist was a random mix based on a party genre I have defined for a reasonably large amount of tracks - Adding/inserting guests' wishes with either iPeng via iPod touch or IR remote worked like a charm - Syncing the players was rock stable and extremely accurate over more than 10 hours I said this once in the past on these forums but I have to repeat it: the Squeezebox (Classic in my case) is the single greatest piece of electronic equipment I have ever purchased! Initial trial doesn't work, though. I will check why this doesn't fit to the parsing. I kind of assumed that the sort order would be configurable in the output template? Andy In general yes, but as far as I can overview that (maybe this also changes between server versions, I am currently using 7.2) there might be an issue with the artist sorting then because the artist that is retrieved by the standard album query can only be one of artist or album artist tags and so if you want to sort afterwards you have two unsatisfying possibilities: 1.) You got the album artist information. Then you will see entries in the output file like Cash, Johnny or Springsteen, Bruce. 2.) You got the artist information. Then Johnny Cash albums will be sorted under J if you later sort by artist and so on. Both might be unsatisfying for one or the other use case. If you use the sort:artflow option for the album query, you get the albums sorted by album artist but the artist information that is retrieved is the one from the artist tag (or whatever has been configured on the server). So I think it might at least be nice to have the option to specify it like this in the initial request to SqueezeCenter. If I am wrong about the information loss described above, just forget the issue! Just thought this might be good to know before you start major efforts on sorting or stuff like that... I'd definitely appreciate some help in making the output a lot better. Basic usage: ../slimxmlcat.py -f test.xml -s localhost -c 9001 -w 9000 -x sample1.xsl -f is the output file to generate -s is the server name -c is the slimserver CLI port -w is the slimserver HTTP port (for retrieving the cover art) -x is the style sheet to apply (optional) For testing purposes, there is also a limit option (-l) which will only retrieve a subset of the albums on the server. Full usage information can be retrieved using the -h option. Any comments appreciated. Andy Hi Andy, thanks for the upload! I fetched it and will test/look through it extensively tomorrow. Re: [slim] Integrating cover art from Amarok
Hi Bill, maybe this doesn't catch the point for you, but just as an alternative train of thought: You don't necessarily have to use artwork by putting an album.jpg or whatever into each album's folder. You can also use one common folder where all the artwork files are stored together using a naming scheme that identifies them uniquely. With this you don't get into any hassle when concurrent Album/Artist information is stored in the same album folder. The necessary information for this is anyway already there as you read the Album/Artist tags. Of course, I admit there might be other drawbacks with this method, at least for me (as I wrote: ~1000 albums and very few various artists ones) this works pretty well... Re: [slim] Integrating cover art from Amarok
Hi Ben, sorry for the delayed answer, I had some web access troubles for the last days. Of course, you can have my modification, it (the modification) is of rather ridiculous complexity, as I only use the original offline script to gather all the files in a temp directory with as I wrote Artist - Album.jpg as filenames. To be honest, I own roundabout 1000 CDs but there are only about 25 various artist ones beneath them, so I did not start to struggle with this well discussed issue too long but just did some manual copying and adjusting for these afterwards. As well as for albums/artists containing / in the name, so for example for AC/DC - For those about to rock the file is called DC - For those about to rock.jpg and resides in the subfolder AC This works pretty well with SlimServer when handling all artwork files in a common folder. I have attached the original script and the modified one so you can see how little modification there is. For the moment I am pretty happy but as I love Amarok as an in-front-of-the-PC-solution and in parallel I am damn happy with my Squeezebox/Nokia 770 combination (thanks so much for the skin by the way!), I am always interested in anything you might do to the Amarok-Squeezebox-integration and also willing to join efforts on scripting in case you need some help or some additional opinion! Hope this is of any help to you! Re: [slim] Integrating cover art from Amarok
I did exactly this. I used an Amarok script add-on called CopyCover, available from http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=22517 It is intended to copy the cover of the currently played song to the song's physical dir location, but there is also an offline version of the script which I modified to copy all covers in Amarok's album cache to one directory, using names like Artist - Album.jpg This folder is then used as a common album art folder in SlimServer's settings (I personally prefer this solution over the folder.jpg approach because you can more easily do things on ALL the covers, e.g. reorganize them or run batch image processing on all of them). It took about one hour of manual post-processing as some of the artist/album names contain strange characters and stuff like that but now it works like a charm. Just to prevent avoidable confusion/damage to your music and artwork files: read the README file of the copycover script package before executing anything. There is a command line switch for only pretending to do copy the covers in order to show what the script WOULD do. You might find this useful... I also slightly modified the script to first copy everything to a working directory so that nothing was done/changed in the server files themselves before I was sure everything was sorted out correctly. Hope this gives any help to your plans. erland already gave a neat summary of the general options, I'd just like to add some of my personal experiences (to make choices even harder ;-)): 1. Loudness: Of course, it is very likely, but a NAS solution might not necessarily be more quiet than a dedicated PC/workstation solution. I personally have my music stored on a Buffalo Linkstation II and this one is significantly louder than my normal workstation (which is an Athlon64 3400+ based Linux workstation which I build explicitely to be as quiet as possible). 2. Power: I use the NAS for the 24/7 music server because it consumes much less power than the PC. If you don't want to waste a significant amount of money it might make sense to go for either a NAS device or an explicite low-power optimized PC solution (there are several threads describing people's projects in the 3rd party hardware forum) or at least setup something like standby mode and wake-on-lan for the PC your slimserver is running on. 3. Performance: As erland wrote the major drawbacks of a pure NAS solution are located in the library scanning and web interface performance. For my 10,000 song library the Linkstation slimserver needs about 4-5 hours for a full re-scan while the Athlon PC does the job in = 20 minutes. Regarding the web interface, you can find roundabout 10,000 threads here showing that everyone has his/her own perception of the web interface response times on slow server machines. It can take several seconds for some browsing actions to happen if the server runs on a NAS like the Linkstation. For me that's perfectly OK as I am only using the web interface for administration purposes at the moment but I'd like to switch my living room remote to a handheld WLAN device (Nokia770) completely and e.g. for browsing albums by artwork the NAS server performance is unaccepatable, therefore I'm thinking about switching to a PC based server. By the way, the Squeezebox response time for use with the standard remote is perfectly fine even with a NAS based server. Hope this helps you somehow to select what's necessary for your taste. [slim] Re: Random within a selected year
I have done this already. Really nice functionality especially for freaks like myself that like to randomly browse their music collection in any possible kind of way ;-) As I am currently not at home I cannot give you an exact specification but it is something like this: - Go to the players settings via the remote control on the Squeezebox itself and select that you'd like to hear your selections in random mode. - After that go to select the music by year and when you're at the year you're looking for just press the play button. [slim] Re: Newbie problem with installing SlimServer on Linkstation
Hi Steve, sorry for the delayed answer! I cannot speak for SS 6.3.1 but I have an installation of 6.3.0 running on the MIPS Linkstation working fine. I got it and the installation instructions from the same place referred in the original place (LinkstationWiki). What is strange is that you're investigations are somehow indicating you've got perl version 5.8.5 whereas the current Openlink version 0.52b (http://linkstationwiki.net/index.php?title=Projects/OpenLink) contains perl version 5.8.7. If you have not already removed all the perl stuff, let me give one additional hint there: the line lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 25 15:43 /usr/local/bin/perl - perl5.8.5 again indicates a symbolic link (in this case from /usr/local/bin/perl to /usr/local/bin/perl5.8.5) and therefore the file ... command has to be rerun on the real executable, i.e. try file /usr/local/bin/perl5.8.5 or any further files if this is still just a link pointing somewhere else. REGARDING THE FIRMWARE UPDATE: - I hope someone corrects me if this is wrong but from my point of view the SS version 5.4 won't update anything on the NAS as the firmware is not downloaded but is contained in the SS package. As 5.4 is quite old there might not be a newer version of the Firmware included than the one you already have on your SB. - I am not sure (don't have the manual available right now) but can it be that you have to do the factory reset or something similar via the remote control for the Squeezebox to initiate a Firmware update? Hope all this is of any help for you! [slim] Re: Cheap, low power PC for slimserver
Looks nice at first glance. I just saw on the details page that it is based on a 166MHz processor, which means it's even got less performance than typical NAS devices. And I think even these are quickly reaching their performance limits as soon as you'd like to install more than a few plugins (maybe some transcoding stuff like AlienBBC etc.)... Anyway, if you get one, I'd really like to read something about your experiences! [slim] Re: Newbie problem with installing SlimServer on Linkstation
Well, as the previous ls -l only shows that /usr/bin/perl is a link to /usr/local/bin/perl please do a ls -l /usr/local/bin/perl to see if that one (which is the real perl executable) has the correct execution rights. -- srasher srasher's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6209 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21385 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
