If you end up changing amps, I've been using an "Audiosource Amp-100" for several years for a similar application - run it from and SB-3, using its auto turn-on/shut off feature. It sounds decent, and can run two sets of speakers (A, B, or both, selectable from front panel), and it automatically shuts off after a few minutes of no sound from the SB3. Re: [slim] Strange Behavior with Multiple Duets (low level output on non playing unit)
So both Duets are connected to separate channels of the SAME power amp? Most likely it's some form of analog cross-talk between the DACs and the speakers. Could be bad cable(s) between DAC and amplifier, improper shielding or grounding, something within the amplifier, etc. I'd be VERY surprised if it was something before the DACs in the signal chain (i.e., the Duets, or LMS, or even the Duet-to-DAC interfaces.) tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107364 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The DC blocking capacitors for that particular channel fail, so replacing the capacitors can fix this. Re: [slim] Networking help
It would still help if you could provide some form of diagram of your setup. Also, is the wifi router located in the house as near as possible to the office/outbuilding? (to get the best chance of getting a strong enough signal out there) Any way to run an ethernet cable to the office? I've had reasonable success running two wireless routers. Primary one has all the main settings enabled (e.g., configured to provide the dynamic addressing, with a range of dynamic addresses, and left a separate range of addresses which I use form Static addressing). The second router is at the other end of the house - the two are connected together via wired ethernet. The second router does NOT perform the dynamic address allocation, it is only a wifi hotspot. I did, however, configure both wifi routers to use the same SSID and password. Generally a device will connect to one or the other - but "roaming" isn't handled particularly well - if I move to the other end of the house, a device will tend to stay connected to the one it originally connected to, even though the second device now has a much stronger signal). If you're OK having two separate wireless networks, you could configure the two hotspots with separate SSIDs and passwords, and then just connect a particular device to one or the other. BUT make sure they are not BOTH trying to provide the dynamic IP configuration. tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105743 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Building the best Pi LMS Player
I like the ability to control a player "directly" via a remote control. I tried to get a simple IR to work (using a photodiode and the GPIO on the RPI), but was having trouble figuring out the details. It would be GREAT of the PiCorePlayer/JiveLite configuration could work with this out-of-the box... I went to the FLIRC dongle. It works well - I have a mediacenter IR Remote, and I configured the FLIRC to emulate the appropriate keyboard inputs to control JiveLite from the remote. The drawback is it is more costly than the photodiode, and it requires its own USB port, plus I was worried that it might draw more current than the RPi could provide via USB, so I use a powered USB hub (more stuff...). tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=104628 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Yeah, let's start with a curveball, shall we? 100% of my music is in Ogg Vorbis format, so good support is a must, but on-the-fly transcoding is fine. 2. Gapless playback 3. Multi-device sync (without breaking gapless playback!) 4. Multi-tagging + ALBUMARTIST support 5. Replaygain support 6. Ability to play Internet streams (i.e. radio stations) 7. Ability to control playback from and show Now Playing info/visualizations on that device 8. IR remote support As far as what's out there: for packaged products, we have Sonos, Olive, and various DLNA implementations (anything else?). Then, for projects, we have, AFAICT, various ways to run SqueezeLite--on a Raspberry Pi, on an HTPC, on a tablet, etc. First off, did I miss anything? Secondly, how well do each of these replacements stack up, relative to an actual Squeezebox? If I understand correctly, #2, #3, and #4 are hard to come by in packaged products, and #7 and #8 might be hard to accomplish via SqueezeLite. I could probably handle #7 and #8 via the SlimServer web interface (or some other interface) on a phone or tablet, although I really do strongly prefer using the IR remote control over the web interface. I've got an RPi running squeezelite and jivelite (using SqueezeOnArch). jivelite responds to keyboard commands to navigate, and use FLIRC and a media center remote to generate the psuedo key-presses from an IR remote. I have an LCD screen (same resolution as Joggler, so can use the Joggler skin in jivelite) connected via HDMI. HiFiBerryPi AMP+ to some passive speakers - almost a Boom2. I'd say, if the Touch is working as you want wired, to go with that. You can try the net-udap approach... it's not TOO hard, but can take some playing around to figure it out. Re: [slim] Use Squeezebox with wireless speakers
Have you considered looking for a Squeezebox Boom or Radio (or UE Radio) on one of the used sites? Your use case actually sounds like what those devices were made for - a self-contained squeezebox player/amplifier/speaker. Then you get the advantages of the Squeezebox system - additional players which can either play their own stream, or be synchronized with any other Squeezebox players in your system to play the same stream. Other options (if you can find) are used SB3, Touch or Receiver, connected to active speakers directly. tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102155 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] New PC - windows 7.0 or windows 8.1?
Probably the biggest improvement in my system was taking the LMS server OFF of my desktop PC. My desktop PC gets used by multiple family members, stuff gets installed, updated. The power gets cycled and/or you need to re-boot for one reason or another. All of this can be irritating to someone trying to just access their music via LMS. I setup a relatively low-powered server which serves LMS, and also provides distributed file sharing so I can access the same files from my desktop, a laptop. And it's also available for other sharing tasks (although not very thoroughly utilized). Most of the statements about how different configurations can impact your sound quality are dubious claims - as others have stated, the sound quality will be determined by the combination of your player (client) and connected audio componenents. tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102060 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

To be sure you're doing it right, pull the power from the unit, press and hold the appropriate button on the remote while keeping it pointed at the unit, and give the unit power again, while all the time keeping the remote button pressed and the remote pointed at the unit. How daunting a challenge would a touch-screen interface be? I don't know how standard touch-panels are, or if there are standard drivers. It seems like it might be a lot of work, but eventually having a user interface built-in would be great. Then again, the SB3 UI consists of a display plus IR remote, so I guess that would be OK - still would require the GUI. The nice thing on the Radio and Boom are the hard buttons (volume, navigation, presets), but that would add a lot to the physical complexity, so I would vote to not head down that route. tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97881 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

What's the approach to power supply on this thing? Is the thought a wall-wart switching supply with good on-board post regulators for the audio section? Are there EMI concerns? How is the audio section going to be isolated from all the digital switching noise generated on the computer portion of the board? Also was thinking about testing. Do these prototype boards get assembled at the fab/assembly house, and then sent out to the individual user without any form of functional test? That may be the only practical approach, as I doubt if John wants to perform a functionality check on even 25 boards. tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=97881 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

All have been commercial failures. Ripping CD's isn't going to be the dominating way to get your music into your server any more - downloading and streaming are more important, and in any case, you can't rip without keyboard and screen, as CDDB data isn't 100% perfect. So acquiring content is best done on a PC/Mac/whatever. The server, with it's hard disk(s), is best placed away from your music system. The players should be as small as possible, with no moving parts. And you want several of them. So very conflicting requirements - not easily satisfied by a self-contained box. I agree with this point of view. The players should be kept somewhat simple. I found it very nice to have the squeezeboxserver running on a separate, low power/reasonably quiet Atom mini PC which runs 24/7 with practically no intervention. I don't have to worry about the music stopping in the living room because my son crashed the PC running some video game. -- tcutting tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87453 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] newbie multi zone question
Where are you running Squeezeboxserver? With Squeezebox system, multi zone usually means adding additional squeezeboxes. Assuming your larger system downstairs is a good audio 2-channel system, best bet would be to add a Touch down there. You would then have 2 Touch'es, each can connect to your Squeezeboxserver either via wired ethernet (preferred for reliability reasons) or wifi. The Touch supports playback of 24/96 lossless files (FLAC for sure, not sure if Apple lossless is supported natively by the Touch, but if you are running your Squeezeboxserver on a reasonable PC (not your NAS), the Squeezeboxserver can support transcoding from Apple lossless to FLAC if needed). You probably want a copy of ALL your music files available to your Squeezeboxserver - this could be on a drive local to the Squeezeboxserver PC, or I suppose could be available through your NAS. -- tcutting tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86872 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Help with modifying convert.conf file
You will probably want to look at task manager (or whatever equivalent for Windows 7) to try to see what's going on. One thing this change does is that ALL streams will now be transcoded. For example, I believe even a 44.1kHz MP3 will get sent through LAME and transcoded to 44.1kHz. I think LAME is smart enough to determine this is a trivial process, since when I looked at resources, this case runs LAME, but it doesn't use many resources when compared to a real transcode (from 48kHz to 44.1, for example). Look for a LAME process or a sox process when running a stream. -- tcutting tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=86310 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Squeezebox v3 showing Ethernet appears to be disconnected even though it is
You might try removing the wifi card. These cards have gone bad, making the SB3 completely unresponsive. Your symptoms, however, seem a little different, so it may not be the case. First thing you should try would be a xilinx reset. Try powering-on your SB3 (completely remove the power connection, then plug back in) while pointing your remote at SB3 and hold down 1 on the remote. If that doesn't work, you could try removing the wifi card inside the SB3 - for most that's an issue since they run wireless, but in your case it's a viable option. -- tcutting tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81794 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Before that, I used one of the sound effects which actually is served through mysqueezebox.com, and the reliability of the alarm was poor. Since changing to local (SBS hosted) alarm sounds, the reliability has been 100%. A fair amount of effort has gone on in software and firmware to improve the alarm reliability as well. In general, if you always use Squeezeboxserver, your alarms will probably be very reliable... if you depend on Mysqueezebox.com for alarms, you are asking for trouble. -- tcutting tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81581 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox Receiver - Analogue or Optical?
I believe if your receiver does ANY digital processing of your signal, then it would be best to send it the digital signal, as otherwise it will re-digitize the analog signal, process it, and convert back to analog with its internal DACs anyway. Most home theater receivers have an option to run thru purely analog, but that limits your options. I'm not sure, but I think even the crossover to create LF outs to the subwoofer end up going through digital processing for most HT receivers. -- tcutting tcutting's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17402 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81491 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] 2 Questions
There are three options for playing on a PC - these are software player emulators (they emulate, in some form or another, the hardware squeezebox players). Squeezeplay - this emulates the newer player types (Touch, Radio, Controller) and has graphical user interface like you would see on these devices so it can be used to control your squeezeboxes, and you can enable the audio playback so it can become a player as well. Softsqueeze - this emulates the older style players (SB3/Classic, Transporter, Boom, ...). This used to be available through the web interface to Squeezeboxserver, you'd have to search the forums to find out how to get it now, I don't recall. Squeezeslave - this is a gui-less player, typically you would run it from a command tool. It's nice because it's small and doesn't require any display resources. Not sure about printing playlists - may actually be third-party apps or other music software which could handle this better. There's something called Album Catalogue Creator which allows you to create catalog of your entire library.
