Did you try a "Xilinx" reset?
Instructions (from the WIKI):

Some system operations that require you to point your remote control on
the Squeezebox while starting the Squeezebox. To be sure you're doing it
right, pull the power from the unit, press and hold the appropriate
button on the remote while keeping it pointed at the unit, and give the
unit power again, while all the time keeping the remote button pressed
and the remote pointed at the unit.

Ip3k-based players

These codes apply to the ip3k-based players: Squeezebox 1, Squeezebox2,
Squeezebox3, Boom.

ADD - Factory reset
1 - Program Xilinx
2 - Factory test mode
3 - Audio sine test

SB3=Classic (different form factor compared to SB and SB2).
Original SB3's were indeed available w/o wifi (I have a Slimdevices
branded SB3 which is non-wifi).

Do you have a compatible power supply you could try? (For example, do
you have another SB3?). The power supplies (aka "wall warts") are a
weak link (along with the wireless cards, which you've already tried) -
I believe there are cases where the optical port shows light, but other
aspects of the unit don't work due to weak/degraded power supply.
Was this SB3 ever connected to LMS? If so, can LMS "see" it, even though
the display isn't working?

If you end up changing amps, I've been using an "Audiosource Amp-100"
for several years for a similar application - run it from and SB-3,
using its auto turn-on/shut off feature. It sounds decent, and can run
two sets of speakers (A, B, or both, selectable from front panel), and
it automatically shuts off after a few minutes of no sound from the
SB3. It was about $100.

Re: [slim] Strange Behavior with Multiple Duets (low level output on non playing unit)

2017-05-04 Thread tcutting

So both Duets are connected to separate channels of the SAME power amp?
Most likely it's some form of analog cross-talk between the DACs and the
speakers. Could be bad cable(s) between DAC and amplifier, improper
shielding or grounding, something within the amplifier, etc. I'd be
VERY surprised if it was something before the DACs in the signal chain
(i.e., the Duets, or LMS, or even the Duet-to-DAC interfaces.)

Judging from you symptoms, it may be your wireless card in the SB3 has
failed (a common problem). Sometimes removing the wireless card in the
unit will allow it to function (although only on wired ethernet). If
this turns out to be the issue, I think some on this forum have been
able to find replacement wifi cards - or you could just used wired.

Common issue is problem with WiFi card. You can try removing the WiFi
card to see if the SB3 boots up (requires opening the unit, however).

The internal wifi on the SB3's is a small daughter card. Several SB3's
have stopped working due to failed wifi card, and started working when
the card was removed. The original SlimDevices SB3's were available as
wired only (did not include the wifi card), and the units will work
wired only when the card is removed. It might be worth a try removing
to see if it fixes your problem (I believe it requires TORX driver to
disassemble the SB3.

I see you talk about replacing the capacitors, but most of the issues
I've heard of related to the capacitors is that one (or both) of the
analog output channels gets very quiet. The DC blocking capacitors for
that particular channel fail, so replacing the capacitors can fix this.
They wouldn't impact the digital outputs, nor would they cause the SB3
to crash.

Re: [slim] Networking help

2016-06-13 Thread tcutting

It would still help if you could provide some form of diagram of your
setup.

Also, is the wifi router located in the house as near as possible to the
office/outbuilding? (to get the best chance of getting a strong enough
signal out there)

Any way to run an ethernet cable to the office?

I've had reasonable success running two wireless routers. Primary one
has all the main settings enabled (e.g., configured to provide the
dynamic addressing, with a range of dynamic addresses, and left a
separate range of addresses which I use form Static addressing). The
second router is at the other end of the house - the two are connected
together via wired ethernet. The second router does NOT perform the
dynamic address allocation, it is only a wifi hotspot. I did, however,
configure both wifi routers to use the same SSID and password.
Generally a device will connect to one or the other - but "roaming"
isn't handled particularly well - if I move to the other end of the
house, a device will tend to stay connected to the one it originally
connected to, even though the second device now has a much stronger
signal). If you're OK having two separate wireless networks, you could
configure the two hotspots with separate SSIDs and passwords, and then
just connect a particular device to one or the other. BUT make sure
they are not BOTH trying to provide the dynamic IP configuration.

I've been able to play SiriusXM through particular "squeeze" players -
specifically my RaspberryPi's running piCorePlayer and the ShairPort
function. I also am using an old iPhone with the SiriusXM app, and use
AirPlay to then stream to my player.
There may be a ShairPort plugin on LMS which allows all Squeeze players
to be accessible via ShairPort/AirPlay - but I'm not sure. But at least
I do currently have access to SiriusXM content on a couple of my Squeeze
players.

Did you try removing the WiFi card? That's a common failure with the

I believe the typical symptom is that the Classic will not "boot" - so
yes, it takes out the display. Assuming you can open the Classic, the
wifi card is removable.
It turns out, the Classic I have does NOT have the card (older version,
wifi was an option). Try removing the card, and seeing if the Classic
starts up when powered.

I KNOW there are discussions of the issue on this forum, but you'd have
to try and search it up.

I believe there has been some attempts at finding compatible replacement
cards, but I'm not sure if they've been successful.

By the way, do you use your Classic wireless?

Yes, that works. There are keyboard shortcuts for the jivelite control
functions. You can configure Flirc to send the appropriate keyboard
commands in response to the corresponding remote key presses.
There are some other threads which have links to the keyboard commands,
and may even have flirc configurations.

Re: [slim] Building the best Pi LMS Player

I like the ability to control a player "directly" via a remote control.
I tried to get a simple IR to work (using a photodiode and the GPIO on
the RPI), but was having trouble figuring out the details. It would be
GREAT of the PiCorePlayer/JiveLite configuration could work with this
out-of-the box...
I went to the FLIRC dongle. It works well - I have a mediacenter IR
Remote, and I configured the FLIRC to emulate the appropriate keyboard
inputs to control JiveLite from the remote. The drawback is it is more
costly than the photodiode, and it requires its own USB port, plus I was
worried that it might draw more current than the RPi could provide via
USB, so I use a powered USB hub (more stuff...).

I would like to figure out a way to add the CustomClock applet to

I have an RPI currently running squeezelite and jivelite (currently

same resolution as the official RPI display - it's almost a touch, but
what I miss the most is the CustomClock screensavers (for example, the
custom SuperDateTime screens).
It would be GREAT if erland could port the customclock applet to work

Sounds like a bad capacitor for the "white" output channel - fairly
common failure (at least for SB3/Classics, I assume SB2s are virtually
identical in that regard).

I am VERY surprised, however, that when connected to external DAC via
the digital coax, that you only got one channel - not sure how that
would happen.

I don't recall with the SB2's, but are there wireless versions? If so,
is this one? I know the SB3/Classics can have wifi card failures which
make the unit appear dead, but will come to life with the wifi card
removed (of course, then you must use wired, or try to replace the wifi

Re: [slim] PicorePlayer + internet browser

2015-08-03 Thread tcutting

I believe it may be possible to run JiveLite along with PiCorePlayer.
JiveLite is a lite user interface based on the Jive controller used in
the Logitech hardware players (Radio, Touch, Controller). I am running
JiveLite on a Raspberry Pi using the SqueezeOnArch implementation of
Squeezlite (player) - I have a small LCD screen connected via HDMI. I
would expect if you can run JiveLite with PiCorePlayer, you should be
able to display using HDMI to your TV. I also am using a FLIRC dongle
to allow me to control via an IR remote.

Re: [slim] Status of various Squeezebox replacement projects/products?

2015-05-05 Thread tcutting

CatBus wrote:
So, lucky me, every Squeezebox I own is still 100% functional. But I
know eventually something's going to break, and dammit I really like
these things. So to prepare myself for that dreadful day, I wanted to
write out my personal feature wishlist (sort of prioritized), and see
what's out there that best matches what I want.

 1. Ogg Vorbis support. Yeah, let's start with a curveball, shall we?
100% of my music is in Ogg Vorbis format, so good support is a must, but
 on-the-fly transcoding is fine.
 2. Gapless playback
 3. Multi-device sync (without breaking gapless playback!)
 4. Multi-tagging + ALBUMARTIST support
 5. Replaygain support
 6. Ability to play Internet streams (i.e. radio stations)
 7. Ability to control playback from and show Now Playing
 info/visualizations on that device
 8. IR remote support

As far as what's out there: for packaged products, we have Sonos, Olive,
and various DLNA implementations (anything else?). Then, for projects,
we have, AFAICT, various ways to run SqueezeLite--on a Raspberry Pi, on
an HTPC, on a tablet, etc.

First off, did I miss anything? Secondly, how well do each of these
replacements stack up, relative to an actual Squeezebox? If I
understand correctly, #2, #3, and #4 are hard to come by in packaged
products, and #7 and #8 might be hard to accomplish via SqueezeLite. I
could probably handle #7 and #8 via the SlimServer web interface (or
some other interface) on a phone or tablet, although I really do
strongly prefer using the IR remote control over the web interface.

I've got an RPi running squeezelite and jivelite (using SqueezeOnArch).
jivelite responds to keyboard commands to navigate, and use FLIRC and a
media center remote to generate the psuedo key-presses from an IR
remote. I have an LCD screen (same resolution as Joggler, so can use the
Joggler skin in jivelite) connected via HDMI. HiFiBerryPi AMP+ to some
passive speakers - almost a Boom2. Haven't figured out how to add
visualizations, but the menus work OK, and Now Playing screen.

I've tried a Duet factory reset but can't seem to force it to use

the Controller, and then it didn't connect.

I *have* finally managed by trial and error got it to connect to LMS via
router's wifi network, but this is not really what I want. The Touch is
definitely a lot easier to setup for ethernet than the Duet !

I give some more detail of the setup and hopefully one of you kind folk
will talk me through how to get this to work ...

 Home wifi = mynetwork, autochannel
 Router wifi = O2network, channel 3

Ethernet cables running from both laptop Receiver into the router.

Tried disabling wifi in laptop to force LMS connection to be ethernet
only, but couldn't get Duet to connect.

Re-enabled laptop wifi connected to O2network, and also selected
this in Controller as network to connect to. This has finally got the
Receiver to connect to LMS and it's working fine now.

But how do force the Receiver to connect via ethernet ??

I suppose I could use O2 router wifi at the evening do (and maybe use
inSSider to check for a clear channel to use) for wireless playback.
Would take Touch as backup though.

Getting receivers to change from wireless to wired can be a pain.
It's been a while, but I think I last did it using the net-udap
utility...
I'd say, if the Touch is working as you want wired, to go with that. You
can try the net-udap approach... it's not TOO hard, but can take some
playing around to figure it out.

When you tried to reconfigure using the controller, did you ever try a
full reset of BOTH the receiver AND the controller?

Have you considered looking for a Squeezebox Boom or Radio (or UE Radio)
on one of the used sites? Your use case actually sounds like what those
devices were made for - a self-contained squeezebox
player/amplifier/speaker. Then you get the advantages of the Squeezebox
system - additional players which can either play their own stream, or
be synchronized with any other Squeezebox players in your system to play
the same stream. Other options (if you can find) are used SB3, Touch or
Receiver, connected to active speakers directly.

Re: [slim] New PC - windows 7.0 or windows 8.1?

2014-09-03 Thread tcutting

Probably the biggest improvement in my system was taking the LMS server
OFF of my desktop PC. My desktop PC gets used by multiple family
members, stuff gets installed, updated. The power gets cycled and/or
you need to re-boot for one reason or another. All of this can be
irritating to someone trying to just access their music via LMS. I
setup a relatively low-powered server which serves LMS, and also
provides distributed file sharing so I can access the same files from my
desktop, a laptop. And it's also available for other sharing tasks
(although not very thoroughly utilized).
Most of the statements about how different configurations can impact
your sound quality are dubious claims - as others have stated, the sound
quality will be determined by the combination of your player (client)
and connected audio componenents.

It might be worthwhile to try a XILINX reset on the SB3. I haven't done

ADD - Factory reset
1 - Program Xilinx
2 - Factory test mode
3 - Audio sine test

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to successfully fingerprint my

exclude the mipcore.exe from MSE - don't know if that helped, or if it
was just previous cockpit error which kept me from being able to analyze

I do have another question on the Music IP process... when I go the the

songs it shows it much higher than the number of titles in my LMS
library. If I hit the Search Songs button without any text, I see that
many, but not all, of the titles are listed twice. It's a nit, as
everything seems to work OK... it just seems strange. Any thoughts?

How daunting a challenge would a touch-screen interface be? I don't know
how standard touch-panels are, or if there are standard drivers. It
seems like it might be a lot of work, but eventually having a user
interface built-in would be great. Then again, the SB3 UI consists of a
display plus IR remote, so I guess that would be OK - still would
require the GUI. The nice thing on the Radio and Boom are the hard
buttons (volume, navigation, presets), but that would add a lot to the
physical complexity, so I would vote to not head down that route.

Re: [slim] Community Funded Squeezebox Replacement - Would you be interested?

2013-02-01 Thread tcutting

What's the approach to power supply on this thing? Is the thought a
wall-wart switching supply with good on-board post regulators for the
audio section? Are there EMI concerns? How is the audio section going to
be isolated from all the digital switching noise generated on the
computer portion of the board?
Also was thinking about testing. Do these prototype boards get
assembled at the fab/assembly house, and then sent out to the individual
user without any form of functional test? That may be the only practical
approach, as I doubt if John wants to perform a functionality check on
even 25 boards.

 All have been commercial failures.

Ripping CD's isn't going to be the dominating way to get your music into

The server, with it's hard disk(s), is best placed away from your music

The players should be as small as possible, with no moving parts. And
 you want several of them.

So very conflicting requirements - not easily satisfied by a

I agree with this point of view. The players should be kept somewhat
simple. If someone is planning on a local music collection, surely they
already have a PC which can perform the ripping.

Squeezeslave is a software squeezebox player which is very light - no

Re: [slim] setup SlimDevices SqueezeBox without remote

The thread posted is for setting up a receiver without the controller
(assuming you had a Duet, which isn't the case).
As that poster also mentioned, if your new network looks like the old
network, it should just work. Did you change your network settings of
network name? The server name or settings?
There are alternate remote settings which are supposed to work - I
think JVC DVD? Someone else may be able to help more there.
Worst case, you could order a Touch remote (but it will take a few days
to get).

Settings/Advanced Settings/Beta Features/Power Saving (again I'm not

which enables/disables suspend mode. There are other settings which
can be tweaked as well. That will reduce the time it takes to wake up,
but also will cause the battery to run down faster.

Re: [slim] newbie multi zone question

2011-04-06 Thread tcutting

Where are you running Squeezeboxserver?
With Squeezebox system, multi zone usually means adding additional
squeezeboxes. Assuming your larger system downstairs is a good audio
2-channel system, best bet would be to add a Touch down there. You
would then have 2 Touch'es, each can connect to your Squeezeboxserver
either via wired ethernet (preferred for reliability reasons) or wifi.
The Touch supports playback of 24/96 lossless files (FLAC for sure, not
sure if Apple lossless is supported natively by the Touch, but if you
are running your Squeezeboxserver on a reasonable PC (not your NAS), the
Squeezeboxserver can support transcoding from Apple lossless to FLAC if
needed).
You probably want a copy of ALL your music files available to your
Squeezeboxserver - this could be on a drive local to the
Squeezeboxserver PC, or I suppose could be available through your NAS.

Re: [slim] Help with modifying convert.conf file

2011-03-16 Thread tcutting

You will probably want to look at task manager (or whatever equivalent
for Windows 7) to try to see what's going on. One thing this change
does is that ALL streams will now be transcoded. For example, I
believe even a 44.1kHz MP3 will get sent through LAME and transcoded
to 44.1kHz. I think LAME is smart enough to determine this is a
trivial process, since when I looked at resources, this case runs LAME,
but it doesn't use many resources when compared to a real transcode
(from 48kHz to 44.1, for example).
Look for a LAME process or a sox process when running a stream.

Yes. Many radio streams are not at 44.1 kHz sample rate. The hardware

Re: [slim] Squeezebox v3 showing Ethernet appears to be disconnected even though it is

You might try removing the wifi card. These cards have gone bad, making
the SB3 completely unresponsive. Your symptoms, however, seem a little
different, so it may not be the case.
First thing you should try would be a xilinx reset. Try powering-on
your SB3 (completely remove the power connection, then plug back in)
while pointing your remote at SB3 and hold down 1 on the remote.
If that doesn't work, you could try removing the wifi card inside the
SB3 - for most that's an issue since they run wireless, but in your
case it's a viable option.

changing to local (SBS hosted) alarm sounds, the reliability has been
100%. A fair amount of effort has gone on in software and firmware to
improve the alarm reliability as well. In general, if you always use

depend on Mysqueezebox.com for alarms, you are asking for trouble.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox Receiver - Analogue or Optical?

2010-08-25 Thread tcutting

I believe if your receiver does ANY digital processing of your signal,
then it would be best to send it the digital signal, as otherwise it
will re-digitize the analog signal, process it, and convert back to
analog with its internal DACs anyway. Most home theater receivers have
an option to run thru purely analog, but that limits your options. I'm
not sure, but I think even the crossover to create LF outs to the
subwoofer end up going through digital processing for most HT
receivers.

Re: [slim] Remote dead on my Classic

2010-07-13 Thread tcutting

If you have soldering skills, you can check the connection between the
IR LED on the remote and the circuit board - this is known to crack.
Supposedly re-flowing the solder can fix this (assuming this is the
issue).

Re: [slim] 2 Questions

2010-07-12 Thread tcutting

There are three options for playing on a PC - these are software
player emulators (they emulate, in some form or another, the hardware
squeezebox players).
Squeezeplay - this emulates the newer player types (Touch, Radio,
Controller) and has graphical user interface like you would see on
these devices so it can be used to control your squeezeboxes, and you
can enable the audio playback so it can become a player as well.
Softsqueeze - this emulates the older style players (SB3/Classic,
Transporter, Boom, ...). This used to be available through the web
interface to Squeezeboxserver, you'd have to search the forums to find
out how to get it now, I don't recall.
Squeezeslave - this is a gui-less player, typically you would run it
from a command tool. It's nice because it's small and doesn't require
any display resources.
Not sure about printing playlists - may actually be third-party apps or
other music software which could handle this better. There's something
called Album Catalogue Creator which allows you to create catalog of
your entire library. I haven't used it, but here's link to the related
thread:

Are you listening to local music, or some type of internet stream?

Re: [slim] PC controller application for Squeezebox?

Maybe I don't understand the question. There is the SBS WebUI for any PC
on your Network. You can use the UI on the Touch. One can use iPeng on
an iPhone/iPad/iTouch. And their is the Logitech Controller.

Maybe he's using TinySC, in which case he wouldn't be able to use WebUI
from PC's. Moose should still work, though, as would external
controllers (Controller or iPhone/Touch + iPeng)

Re: [slim] Broken Remote for SB classic.

2010-06-24 Thread tcutting

One option would be the remote for the Touch. It's more similar in
size/functionality to the SB3 remote. The Touch remote, I believe does
NOT have the brightness button, which I think is used to re-initialize
the SB3 if required (don't remember the process).
How broken is your SB3 remote? There is a known issue with the
connection between the IR transmiter and the circuit board which can
usually be repaired by re-flowing the solder connection at those
locations.

Re: [slim] Player Sync Questions

2010-06-22 Thread tcutting

As aubuti mentions, the standard sync is accessed on old style players
(SB2, SB3, Boom) from the Settings/Synchronize menu. I find it works
best by going to the player you want to add to a group of
synchronized players. For example, if player1 and player2 are already
synchronized, and you want to add player3 to the group, do the setting
from player3 and it will synchronize to the other players. It of
course works for syncing two players as well... if player1 is already
playing the playlist you want to synchronize to, then synchronize FROM
player2 and it will pick-up player1's playlist.

Re: [slim] Is My Squeezebox V3 fried?

2010-06-04 Thread tcutting

Did you try at least operating it with the card out? I would suggest
doing that before going thru the hassle of getting a replacement. I
understand your setup requires this to be wireless, but you should be
able to verify the SB3 starts up ok without the wifi card.

Re: [slim] Receiver stuck in 'Red light flashing slowly' state

2010-06-04 Thread tcutting

Have you tried re-running the setup procedure with the Controller
(remote)? The flashing red light indicates it is in a setup mode, so
it may be waiting for the controller to help configure it. Do you still
have the setup procedure?

Re: [slim] Is My Squeezebox V3 fried?

2010-06-03 Thread tcutting

First, are you sure the brightness isn't all the way down, so it just
looks like it's not turning on?

If that's not the case, you might try removing the wifi card inside.
It seems to be a common failure. Sometimes it can just be re-seated,
but usually it's a failed card. It's at least worth a try (of course
you'd have to open the SB3 up). If that turns out to be the problem,
you could just run it wired-only, or there are some threads which talk
about finding compatible cards on eBay.
