[slim] Disable volume control on a Classic
I just setup a Classic together with a small JVC amp in a new room. Now I noticed that the volume control on the JVC amp's remote also changes the volume on the Classic. Is there a way to disable the volume setting on the Classic or is it possible to set a fixed volume through LMS? Re: [slim] Vortexbox forums & VB Wiki domains dead?
So, I have set up my VortexBox now. Instead of building a new box, I reused an old ASRock ION 330 I found and upgraded it to 4 GB of RAM instead of 2 GB and put in a 2 TB harddisk. So far, everything runs smoothly. The only issue I have is with the Player (is it a LocalPlayer?) that it offers. It only plays audio through the headphone jack, but the ASRock box also has an optical out (SPDIF). How do I configure ALSA audio under Fedora? In the web interface under "Configure Player" it shows me the following: Code: ALSA device list 0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia HDA NVidia at 0xfae78000 irq 20 List of audio device ports 1:: sequencer 2: [ 0] : control 3: [ 0- 0]: digital audio playback 4: [ 0- 0]: digital audio capture 5: [ 0- 1]: digital audio playback 6: [ 0- 3]: digital audio playback 7: [ 0- 0]: hardware dependent 8: [ 0- 3]: hardware dependent 33:: timer Current setup: - EEEBox, Xubuntu 14.04, LMS 7.9, FLAC - *Duet* > Pro-Ject DAC Box E > AKG Hearo 888 Titan (home office), *Boom + Canton ASF 75 SC* (master bedroom), *Boom* (master bathroom), 2 *Radios* (guest bathroom and garden deck), *RPi3 + LibreELEC + XSqueeze* > Samsung TV > NAD L53 > Mission 2.1 speakers (living room) - *Transporter* > vintage Wega Modul 42V amp (42E equalizer, 42T tape deck + Thorens TD 160 Mk II turntable) > Quadral Vulkan Mk II (music room) wortgefecht's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63295 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=106668 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Just a last general question: I noticed that there are a few companies selling pre-assembled VortexBoxes. Some come even either with this SOtM USB PCIe card or a soundcard like the Juli@ (newer version of my Maya). Does VortexBox support these ootb? The Maya does 24/192 output but I remember from the last time I used it under Debian it's not that easy to get it to work: It's only supported by ALSA and SPDIF output never works. The latter is no problem, since if I use the card, I would use the analogue out anyways. Today I also read for the first time about the SOtM USB PCIe card in one of Archimago's blog posts. It's an interesting piece of hardware--but is it really worth the money (350) compared to similar boards from other chinese manufacturers for about 50? Re: [slim] Vortexbox forums & VB Wiki domains dead?
Thanks for that. I read in your footer that you run a box with 4TB. Is that one drive or do you have several installed? I'm not familiar with Fedora (VortexBox is based on it, no?), so I don't know about auto mounting drives there. Even on Debian, that can be a pain in the a**. Also, it's possible to run VortexBox on a small SSD and use the WD Greens only for storage I suppose. Re: [slim] Vortexbox forums & VB Wiki domains dead?
Hello everyone, since the sites are still down, and some of you here are fairly experienced with VortexBox, I just ask my questions here. So, I have a nice HTPC case, some Micro ATX motherboards with dual and quad core AMD processors and up to 8 GB of RAM, some 2TB WD Green hdds, and even an unused ESI Maya 44 sound card as an option in storage (but most definitely, the box would be connected via USB to a DAC). All have been used in my previous pcs or NAS, and are in very good condition. My goal now is to build a VortexBox that does the ripping, storage, LMS server (7.9 is possible, I read), and acts as a local player with my second stereo rig I'm building in my home office. A nice option would be the possibility to sometimes listen to a CD directly before ripping. As this would be an audio only setup, the DVD ripping feature is not needed. Here we go: a) Generally, is this still a valid way to go? After all, the sites are now down for a while. b) Which version would you suggest? 2.3 or 2.4? c) Since VortexBox offers the ripping of DVDs, does it need a DVD drive? Or would an old CD ROM with a reliable laser unit be supported, too? I have an old Sony CD ROM tray drive here, too. Thanks in advance for clarifying things for me. Re: [slim] Building the best Pi LMS Player
AFAIK there is an official case for the 7" - but there's no room for a sound card/DAC. Then there is another case for the screen where the Pi board sits on the back without casing. That works with DACs. The latter look like this: https://www.pi-shop.ch/raspberry-pi-7-touchscreen-display-frame-noir-732 This is the official case: https://www.pi-shop.ch/multicomp-gehaeuse-fuer-raspberry-pi-7-zoll-display-der-foundation There's also this one: https://www.pi-shop.ch/modmypi-7-touchscreen-gehaeuse-und-staender I myself am working on a bundle that can be placed in a 43 cm casing and fitted with a 2 line LCD display (think of a replacement for the Transporter rather than the Touch). Re: [slim] Improved Squeezebox config availible for Harmony users.
I use a Harmony 650 with my livingroom setup (TV, AVR, Raspberry Pi with KODI, DVD and Chromecast). KODI media center on RPi works great with IR remotes through the TV set via HDMI. I really like the different actions one can configure in the Harmony (watch TV, listen to music etc.). But as mentioned before, SB Receiver doesn't have a IR receiver. [slim] Squeezebox Classic - IR remote control problem
Since there is no forum for the Classic, I post this here: Since yesterday I experience some strange behaviour of my classic. When I use a remote (either the original one or my Logitech Harmony) and hit a button, the Classic either behaves like the button is pressed permanently (constantly scrolling through the menu and stopping at random menu items), shuts down and restarts with setup menu or doesn't react at all. The behaviour seems completely random to me. When I use Squeeze Ctrl on my phone or the web interface of LMS to control it, everything works fine. This is the log file around the time the strange behaviour occured last: Code: [15-10-09 19:00:18.0086] Slim::Web::JSONRPC::requestMethod (443) request not dispatchable! [slim] OT - What's your mobile music setup?
Ever since I got my first Sony Walkman as a kid in the 1980ies, one would almost never see me in public without headphones. I went through the whole evolution of mobile music players: several Walkmen, later Discmen, I even had a Minidisc once. In the late 1990ies I got myself a Rio PMP 300 and got introduced to the lossy world of MP3s. After several MP3 players I started using my mobile phones for that purpose, first Nokia, later Android phones. Finally, streaming services. But a few years ago, I stopped with the casual listening of music everywhere and started a more 'serious' habit of dedicated listening at home (unearthed my vinyl collection and ripped all my CDs to FLAC). For some time now my work life requires extensive travel by train (1+ hours trips) and frequent overnight stays at hotels. Unhappy with the sound quality of my mobile, I first bought a Fiio Alpen E17 DAC and started using my Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro from home. This was fine, but a bit unhandy, since disk space is very limited (FLAC, remember?). Also, always starting up my laptop seems unpractical. So I did some digging and decided, that I am unwilling to pay fantasy prices for one of these fancy new lossless players out there (Fiio, Astell Kern). Luckily, I stumbled upon Rockbox, an open source alternative firmware for MP3 players. I still have an old Philips GoGear HDD6320 player, which I didn't use anymore, because it only supports MP3 and WMA and only works with Windows Media Player (moved to Linux ages ago). I am on your side here, at least if we are talking about radio streams. I would neither call myself an audiophile, nor do I think I have excellent hearing, but I made a test recently with my Reson PR80s, which is basically a 10 year old, proprietary cd player/ripping station/UPnP client box similar to a VortexBox. Even though it is proprietary, it runs on Linux and can be accessed via telnet--and therefore be hacked and modded. I ripped the same song (Jazz, heavy on sax, drums and male/female voice; not my style, but for the purpose ok) as mp3 (192, 256, 320) and flac and played it on my system (Reson DAC vintage high-end amp and matching speakers). mp3 192 sounded bad, especially when played on low volume. 320 mp3 and flac were almost indistinguishable for me, but when I listened to those two without knowing which was which, flac came out on top most of the times. Again, this was on my dedicated setup for listening. On my Boom or Radio, lossy or lossless does not make any difference, in my opinion. Re: [slim] Use Squeezebox with wireless speakers
I'd go for a pair of wireless speakers that use good old RF technology for transmission, since you don't need Bluetooth, NFC or any other fancy connectivity. These speakers come with a transmitter where you plug in your device (usually a 3,5 mm jack and/or cinch; maybe you could even find some with an optical in, I don't know). The downside of this setup is the fact, that all three components (transmitter and the speakers) need their own power supply. In my pre-Squeezebox days I used to have a pair of Hama wireless RF speakers for our garden deck that were made for outdoor use and could be powered by battery. - *ASRock Ion 330* with Lubuntu 14.04 LTS running LMS 7.8.1 as music/video server - *Boom* (master bedroom), *Radio* (master bathroom), Archos 35 Home Connect + SqueezePlayer (guest bathroom) - *Duet* (living room) - Parasound DAC 1500 - vintage Wega Modul 42V amp (with 42E equalizer, 42T tape deck, and Thorens TD 160 Mk II turntable) - Quadral Vulkan Mk II speakers wortgefecht's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63295 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102155 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Android Media Player as squeezebox replacement
I tested the following setup: ASRock Ion 330 with Lubuntu 14.04 LTS running LMS 7.8.1 as music/video server (this one usually feeds my Boom, Duet and Radio), Google Chromecast stick connected to a Samsung TV (sound through a Samsung 2.1 soundbar) and controlled through the app BubbleUPnP (paid version) on my Nexus 7. Works fine for mp4 and avi videos (only paid version of BubbleUPnP supports avi) and mp3 and flac music. Problem is the bad sound quality of the Samsung setup compared to my vintage Wega amp and Quadral speakers connected to the Duet through a Parasound DAC 1500. But I'm sure if you hook your Chromecast/TV setup to a nice system, that would be by far better--I just don't watch that much TV/videos/movies, so I don't have any need for that. Nevertheless, LMS is imho an excellent choice for setting up a UPnP server on a linux box, not only for audio through Squeezebox devices, but for occasional video streaming to a tv set, too. wortgefecht's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=63295 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=102125 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
