MikeekiM: another thought; is to get a SB Classic (SB3 or SB2) in
conjuction with a SBC (Controller). It's a great setup; albeit a bit
 expensive.

I know this is a FAQ but can the controller work with Sb2's and 3s
without the SBR? and if you already have Sb2/3s isnt that the way to
go?

Works perfectly well.

Erm... the two units have different DACs, don't they?

True; although most seem to agree the differences between them are
negligible.

Re: [slim] Any Technical Difference Between Duet vs (New Controller + Classic)

2008-09-22 Thread maggior

The cost of the SB3 has dropped considerably. I can be had from Amazon
for ~$230. If you really think you'll have no use for the receiver,
you could always sell it on EBay. I would think you would be able to
get at least $120 for it. The receiver by itself goes for $150.

On my hi-fi equipment (I would describe it as mid-grade) I don't notice
any audible differences between the SB3 and the SBR.

You might consider hanging onto the receiver for future use. As I've
heard others say here, SqueezeBoxes are like potato chips - you can't
just have one!

[slim] Any Technical Difference Between Duet vs (New Controller + Classic)

2008-09-21 Thread MikeekiM

I picked up the duet...but am now feeling a bit of buyers remorse...not
because I don't like the solution...not because it was too
expensive...

On the contrary...I love the solution, and actually think I want to
spend more to get a display near my home theater set up...

Is there any benefit to the new SB Receiver versus the SB Classic? I
still plan on keeping the new controller...

I think the SBR can auto-sense crossed ethernet cables.
No advantages worth mentioning AFAIK.

The SB3 looks nicer, has IR capability and a lovely display. The
Receiver is pretty cut-down in comparison.

Re: [slim] Any Technical Difference Between Duet vs (New Controller + Classic)

2008-09-21 Thread kdf

The main benefit of the Receiver is the lower cost. This allows you to
save money if you keep your Hi-Fi equipment in a cupboard, and/or use
the Controller or web ui as the primary interface. The audio hardware
is different, but audible results should be more or less the same.

SB Classic adds cost but gives you a multi-purpose display and IR in/
out capability. You can display information from news feeds while
music is not playing and you can use the SB Classic as an IR Receiver/
Blaster to control your other equipment if you'd like to keep them
hidden.

And, there is also the matter of form factor. You need the extra
height for SB Classic (unless you can find the older SB2's on ebay)
