Well I managed to get it to spit this out:
Could not open /etc/slimserver-strings.txt for writing: Permission
denied

I'm running slimserver on Gentoo linux, using the official gentoo
package.

Slim::Utils::Prefs::preferencesPath() returns /etc

slimserver does not have permission to create a file in /etc

This behaviour is correct. The problem is that your plugin is wrongly
assuming it can create and modify a file in preferencesPath(), which in
my setup (and probably other linux setups) it can't.

When I manually created /etc/slimserver-strings.txt and gave slimserver
permission to alter it, the plugin started working as expected for
built-in strings (the server's still ignoring the custom strings for
plugins, but at least /etc/slimserver-strings.txt contains the
requested modifications).

I'd suggest adding an error message in the web interface that explains
the problem and suggests manually creating the file. Or at least modify
the installation instructions to mention this problem.

Cheers

Something must be terribly wrong with it. You're not the first to report

plugin rather useless

No, it uses a custom-strings.txt file and forces the server to reload the
files.

Hi Michael,

I used your plugin to find all of the strings, but editing them didn't
work for either the main set of strings or for plugins (none of the
changes were saved, or indeed even showed up in the web interface). I
didn't have time to troubleshoot this last night when I last posted.

I realise that the plugins define their own strings in their source
code; I just thought that slimserver should load those strings, and
override them with custom-strings.txt. Thinking more about it in terms
of the plugin mechanism, that's quite unlikely (unfortunately). How
does your plugin fix this? By hacking the source code of the other
plugins?

Many plugins define their own string. Make sure you translate them as
well. The StringEditor plugin can help you find the strings and translate
them without restarting SlimServer ;-)

It doesn't seem to override the text in plugins (eg the visualizer
plugin). It probably should, so I wonder if that's a bug in slimserver
whereby custom-strings.txt isn't given the highest priority when it
should be? I'll look into this later.

Thanks for this, kdf - I wasn't aware of this function (shouldn't it at
least be mentioned in the explanatory comments of string.txt?!)

When I get time I'll replace my "strings.txt" offering with a
"custom-strings.txt" for Australian localisation, since that's clearly
a more elegant solution. If people stop bickering I may also make one
for Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, New Zealand, South

Swiss German (not the dialect, but the Swiss spelling I was using so far)

But now that there are pros at work it has to give way to proper German

Here, "chips" come in a bag with flavours (note spelling) like barbecue
and salt & vinegar. What the Brits would call crisps.

But a converted delivery van that makes and sells fries is known as a
chipwagon.

Same here, probably to make it more French as David suggests. However
the French word for visualise is "visualiser", and we don't go so far
as to put the "r" on the end. "Faux-French" as he points out.

There is always a chance, but it's not as simple as it may seem. The
translations are all based on the ISO 639 codes:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639_codes

As you can see, there isn't an official code for the variants of
English, so to do it would require an overhaul of the language
handling.

I've been using custom-strings.txt for some time now to alter certain
strings. it avoids the need for a complete strings file saved over the
standard, and it isn't overwritten when you install a new version of
slimserver.

Nearly the same in Canada as well. You also see "hard disc".

Although I don't see "analogue" all that often, it's probably preferred
here as well because it's the same word in French.

About the only words we don't use that Brits do is "tyre", "lorry" and
"crisps".

[slim] Attention Aussies and Brits!

2007-04-29 Thread bukharin

For anyone who's interested, I've changed all of the English text in
strings.txt to Australian English. This means that "favorites" becomes
"favourites", etc. It's nice to have everything look correct!

An updated strings.txt for server 6.5.1 can be found at my website:
http://www.bukharin.net/phil/linux/slimdevices/

If you want to do it yourself for another server version, it's really
easy. For reference, these are the changes I made to the English text
in strings.txt:

* "favorite" to "favourite"
* "visualize" to "visualise"
* "customize" to "customise"
* "synchronize" to "synchronise"
* "analyzer" to "analyser"
* "analog" to "analogue"

Of course, I changed all the variations too (such as
Favorite/Favorites/favorites). I decided to leave "hard disk" alone,
since that's pretty much the standard spelling in Australia.

If you find anything I've missed, please let me know!
