thanks phil. i have a folder that has 2 shortcuts one that directs squeeze center to look in a secondary internal drive (a drive that is in the computer that is running squeezecenter, ie my main computer) and another shortcut that directs it to a music folder on a network storage device that has 2 1TB drives. i'm not sure precisely what your proposition/questioin means you have NO tags. my auto-rescan library was set to off but it is now set to on... but that point is moot at this moment because for the last 6h my computer has been rescanning the library anyway (a fresh scan) and the music folder link still doesn't show up on my controller now that i have just rechecked it... Dave, You said that Browse Music Folder is the only way you can navigate your collection - I took that to mean that your files didn't have any tags in them, since if they did there are various ways (search artist/album/song, browse artist/album/song etc) you could navigate without using the Browse Music Folder option. The unique thing about the Browse Music Folder options is that it doesn't use tags or the database scan at all - it just reads your directory file name structures. So I'm a bit unclear on what you mean. ANyway,I'm presuming the scan completed and you can now see all of your collection (using one of the above methods)? AFAIK your setup sounds OK (shortcuts etc), provided that the external drive is accessible during the scan - sometime external drives become unavailable (especially USB ones) before a scan starts and then a scan loses everything on that disk from the database. What OS are you using, what SC release and what file types (Flac? mp3?) The appearance or non-appearance of the Browse Music Folder option is totally determined by having a valid path set in the relevant SC settings page - so in your case this should point to the folder where your two drive shortcuts are...and I assume this is on your INTERNAL drive? ANyway,I'm presuming the scan completed and you can now see all of your collection (using one of the above methods)? actually it is the only practical way of navigating my music collection. i have 2TB of music... being able to hit the browse album button works and all my albums show up... but that's the point.ALL my albums show up... all 10,000 of them and then i have to scroll thru them for a long long long time whereas if i navigate my folder tree i can go into music folder and then into classical subfolder and then into my baroque folder and then into my bach folder and then into my you see what i mean... having a tiered folder tree means a faster navigation of all the forks in the road, rather than having 10,000 cd's just thrown into a room in alphabetical order, i've got different shelves in that room for dif music and different boxes on the shelf for specific things. so the folder navigation is essential AFAIK your setup sounds OK (shortcuts etc), provided that the external drive is accessible during the scan - sometime external drives become unavailable (especially USB ones) before a scan starts and then a scan loses everything on that disk from the database. *** drives are always on, the internal one is of course always on and the network drive is always accessible and on. I use Leopard OS X with iTunes and wanted a way to browse music folders without adding media to iTunes. So I figured I would set Slimserver to use iTunes AND scan a folder as well which I could then browse. The folder is on an external FW drive. The media was added but I could not use the browse folder option on the controller nor on the web gui (I could however see the media when browsing by album, artist, etc). At first the browse folder option did not appear on my remote so I had to turn it off and on. Then it appeared but when I chose it it just hung there until I turned if off again. You can verify that you have browse folder functionality with this link. http://127.0.0.1:9000/browsetree.html So I removed the path /Volumes/Spock/new music and instead made a folder in mys users music folder called new music and added that instead. Voilá. It worked. Symlinks don't work. [slim] Browse Music Folder Disappeared from My Controller
I usually find what I want to play by browsing through my music folder filesystem, since I've arranged it in a certain hierarchy. Weirdly, this morning that option was completely missing from the Music Library portion of my controller. It displays only Artists Albums Genres Years New Music Random Mix Playlists Search I tried letting it update itself and still the item did not reappear in my menu. Anyone know why this might have happened and how I can get that option back? I'm running version 7.01 and haven't changed anything in my settings for weeks, so I'm a bit baffled why this would suddenly disappear from my menu. I restarted the squeezecenter server and the controller--the menus is back to normal.
