Yes, I think a 4,5 screen is on the border of being too small to make it useful - the sole reason the replace the original remote for me is to be able to browse cover art. Since the resolution of the Sony Vaio UX however is a very decent 1024*600 it depends on your eye-sight. 12 1024*768 is Great (for this usage), 10.4 800*600 is Very Good, I believe the 7 800*600 (as the coming Arhos I reported on above) is the minimum for being rated Good by me, the Nokia 770/800 4.1 800*480 the limit for being Usable (meaning as good as the included remote). The current Archos 604 Wi-Fi with 4,3 480*272 is too small for me to use it instead of the original remote. Tyler, It really sounds as if you are doing almost exactly what I want to achieve, but I am still having a hard time understanding how your network is put together and exactly where the applications are being run. If I understand correctly from what you are saying, your music is stored remotely (on another device) but you are utilizing the Tablet PC to run Slimserver and to browse Internet radio/control the SB via wireless? How? Is the Interente radio streamed via the tablet, or via the other server where your music is stored? And how is the music storage device connected to the Internet and to the SB? I should say I borrowed MOE'S netremote skin and am in the progress of customizing it to my needs, for instance I don't have SAGETV or an LD but I need to change those, but MOE is a Photoshop expert and changing the buttons are a little more difficult for me, so moe if you are a squeezebox owner and happen to see this thanks for a great skin but I need help with the buttons :). Also I was a little vague regarding the OS but I actually wanted to do something similar and just transfering the OS to the HD won't do it (googled it and it was way more in depth). Has something to do with the Digitizer and I believe the OS on it is a special tablet version. I have or mine came with Win 2000. Re: [slim] Ideal remote to browse slimserver? (not nokia 770 though)
Just curious if the Tablet PC is where you are storing your library and if it is wireless? I've actually considered the tablet PC option--It really is a great happy medium between a PDA and a laptop. I like the SB remote finemost of the time. It really is one of the most intutive remotes I have ever used. But what I also want is to leave the Slimserver PC wired, continue to use it to serve music to the SB3, but use the tablet for browsing and control functions via wireless. This is especially true as Squeezenetwork becomes more rich, with more options to browse. Any ideas as to how to accomplish that? Re: [slim] Ideal remote to browse slimserver? (not nokia 770 though)
It is quieter than my wife's Sony Vaio laptop. If there is music playing, or if the refrigerator is running, the small noise it makes is drowned out completely. I am usually using it to control slimserver for a few minutes at a time while I select music, then I put it to sleep (unless I am reading a book on it). In sleep mode it is completely silent. I will be replacing the HDD this week - going from 5.1 GB with 512k buffer to 80GB with 8 MB buffer. It is sort of silly to put so much storage in that machine, but it is hard to find an HDD smaller than about 40 GB anymore unless you get a refurb or used drive, then it costs as much as a new, larger capacity drive. I'm getting a Seagate Momentus drive which is supposed to be very quiet and very low power but also pretty fast (5 year warranty, too!). You can get a 60 GB 5400 rpm 2nd generation drive for $60 or pay $65 and get 80 GB 5400 rpm 3rd generation drive. Computer economics are strange. I ordered from newegg. It should arrive tomorrow or Wednesday, then I have to figure out how to install the OS on it without a FDD, CDROM, or network connection on the tablet. I will be updating my web site with the exact procedure once I figure it out. When you know what to look for, the original remote is the best. But when you don't, it's nice to be able to browse mindlessly among the cover art. Seldom-played CD's are difficult to remember by name, but when you see the cover you often either *feel* like it or don't like it. Hey, so here what my future setup will look like when complete. Arcam amp; squeezebox: hidden windows pc as server; laptop. (plans for amp/sb3 in a second room as well.) I would really like to run the whole setup from a device that is more handheld in nature, as opposed to the laptop. When I get this project done, I'll have enough gear to set up a second squeezebox in another room. I would like to be able to browse slimserver with a handheld. I can't really see myself putting my laptop on my nightstand, and I don't want to sit around with it on my couch all the time. The PSP looks like a convenient way to go. It seems like the joystick could be a good way to navigate. I read some comments about how just getting for the SB isn't a great idea. Why is that? I have a Pronto at work and it really sucks for me. I'm not a big touch-screen fan. Do any of the Harmony or Universal remotes allow you to browse slimserver? Is there a good pocket pc alternative. Would any of these alternatives let me carry the remote into the other room to drive a second SB? What else should I be asking? Without any feedback, I think a good setup would be a Universal mx500 for my AV setup and a PSP to browse slimserver. -- roll - gybe roll - gybe's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8975 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30964 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

... PDAs suck even worse than computers, which suck pretty badly. The idea of having to manage my remote control, put it on a charging cradle when it's not in use, or wait for it to reload a web page fills me with shuddering horror. I've monkeyed around with the various options on an ipaq 4150 that I have, trying to find some way to make the little PoS useful, but instead it continues to gather dust on top of the bookshelf. SlimRemote, TelCanto, Handheld skin, Nokia 770 skin, all of them made me want to throw the little device away as soon as the oh, that's kind of nifty feeling of getting it to work was gone. The Squeezebox comes with a delightfully functional little remote that is interchangeable throughout the house. For night stand use, I'd upgrade to the lighted button remote. If you'd like something with lots more buttons for controlling more things, the Harmony line seems to make sense, though in my opinion the whole concept of a universal remote is deeply flawed. -- I spent all me tin with the ladies drinking gin, So across the Western ocean I must wander -- traditional ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
