You're right. My brilliant techie son could care less about the SBC,
but when he saw the SB3 last night he said it was the coolest part of
the whole thing.

Go figure :-)

The duet sounds cool and would probably be great but I love the display
 of the sb3 so I think someday I'll have a controller and a SB3. I
think that is the best combo. You always have the SB3 remote to fall
back on and the nice display of the SB3. It think it's worth the money
 difference.

... you have the perfect setup with the SBC and SB3. Great combo. I
am keeping one SBR to use with my AudioEngine speakers as a portable
set up for outdoor party situations. The BOOM works great for just me
or when there's just a few of us, but the SBR and A5's are really good
for a bigger gathering or just more noise :-)

[slim] If I had bought the SB3 first....

2008-10-01 Thread Howard Passman

I would have been a much happier camper in the beginning :-)
Relative to the DUET, the Classic and the BOOM were an absolute joy to
set up. I think the Classic took less than 3 minutes.

If Logitech made the DUET set up similar to the rest of the line, they
would probably cut their tech support calls down significantly.

Nice little machine :-)

I was pretty nervous about setting up the Duet last week. I had company
staying here and didn't want to get drawn in to a big ordeal as these
things often tend to go. Anyway, I had to unplug and replug the
receiver after resetting it (purchased used) but other than that it all
set up without a hitch.

I am loving the Controller while cozied up in bed. I use it with the
Boom which is across the room and hard to see from in bed. It's nice
having a screen, though, even with the Controller.

Oh Sue, you will really like it with the SB3. Big fat screen like the
Boom but bigger. Very cool.

I had an SB2 in the bedroom for several years, but when I got the Boom,
I passed the SB2 on to hubby for use in his workshop. That way he
couldn't say anything when I bought a Duet. ;-)

Never had an SB3, but I think the screen is the same size as SB2. It
tends to grab people's attention, even more so than the coolness
factor of the Controller.

That's right. The case shape of the units is obviously different, but
the VFD and electronics are the same.** The SB3 screen is a different
color than the SB2 due to a different lens in front of the VFD, and the
SB3 screen is not as quite bright as the SB2 for the same reason.

** Newer SB3s have a slightly different, and theoretically slightly
better, Burr-Brown DAC than the SB2s and older SB3s. I think Sean said
that there was no audible difference, that the DAC upgrade was like
putting RAM in a computer that was rated for higher speeds than the
computer could use anyway.

I know what you are talking about. My Duet arrived on a day that I
came home a little early from work to cut the grass. After spending an
hour and getting sucked into setting the Duet up, my wife starting
getting a bit upset telling me that my stuff always comes first. :-).
It was after cutting the grass that I finally figured it out.

The duet is just by its nature more complicated to set up. A large
part of it is the fact that you are actually setting up 2 devices, not
just one. And, as you go through the setup for the first time, it
isn't really clear to you what you are setting up at any given point in
time. Having security on your squeezecenter complicates things
further.

Having gone through a factory reset as a troubleshooting step on my
controller recently, I can say that the setup procedure has improved
and worked much better.

Of course. Unfortunately that would be impossible without adding a
display and an IR remote, which would add significantly to the cost
(think SB3 + SBC).
I was personally amazed at how easy it was to setup my Duet when it came
in. Of course, if you have problems or want non-standard things, things
become a lot more difficult.
